50: jāmbālaḥ

buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃgho vaiśālīm upaniśritya viharati markaṭahradatīre kūṭāgāraśālāyām* | tena khalu samayena vaiśālyām anyatarasyāṃ nagaraparikhāyāṃ pañca pretaśatāni prativasanti vāntāśāny ujjhitāśāni kheṭamūtropajīvīni pūyaśoṇitaviṣṭhāhārāṇi ghorāṇi prakṛtiduḥkhitāni ca | āha ca:

vāntāśā ujjhitāśāś ca kheṭamūtropajīvitaḥ
pūyaśoṇitaviṣṭhāśā ghorāḥ prakṛtiduḥkhitāḥ || iti ||

tasyāṃ ca vaiśālyām anyataro brāhmaṇaḥ | tena sadṛśāt kulāt kalatram ānītam* | sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ patnī āpannasatvā saṃvṛttā | daurgandhaṃ cāsyāḥ kāye saṃvṛttam* | tatas tena brāhmaṇena naimittikā āhūya pṛṣṭāḥ | te kathayanti: yo ’yam udarastho dārakas tasyāyaṃ prabhāva iti | yāvad asau navānāṃ māsānām atyayāt prasūtā | dārako jāto durvarṇo durdarśano avakoṭimako ’medhyamrakṣitagātro durgandhaś ca | tathāpy asau snehapāśānubaddhābhyāṃ paramabībhatso ’pi mātṛpitṛbhyāṃ saṃvardhitaḥ | so ’medhyasthāneṣv evābhiramate saṃkārakūṭe jambāle, keśāṃl luñcati, amedhyaṃ mukhe prakṣipati | tasya bālo jāmbāla iti saṃjñā saṃvṛttā ||

yāvad asāv itaś cāmutaś ca paribhraman pūraṇena kāśyapena dṛṣṭaḥ | tasyaitad abhavat: yādṛśeṣu sthāneṣv ayam abhiramate, nūnam ayaṃ siddhapuruṣaḥ | yanv aham enaṃ pravrājayeyam iti | sa tena pravrājito nagnaḥ paryaṭati satkriyāsu ca vartate | tatas tena paryaṭatā vaiśālīparikhāyāṃ pañca pretaśatāni dṛṣṭāni | sa pūrva­karma­vipāka­saṃ­bandhāt tāṃ nagaraparikhām avatīrya taiḥ sārdhaṃ saṃgamya samāgamya saṃmodate, sakhitvaṃ cābhyupagataḥ | yāvad apareṇa samayena jāmbālo dārakaḥ kvacit prayojanena vyākṣipto vaiśālīṃ praviṣṭaḥ | bhagavāṃś ca tāṃ nagaraparikhām anuprāptaḥ | dadṛśus te pretā buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ dvātriṃśatā mahāpuruṣalakṣaṇaiḥ samalaṃkṛtam aśītyā cānuvyañjanair virājitagātraṃ vyāmaprabhālaṃkṛtaṃ sūryasahasrātirekaprabhaṃ jaṅgamam iva ratnaparvataṃ samantato bhadrakam* | sahadarśanāc cāsya bhagavataḥ pādayor nipatitāḥ | bhagavatā uktāḥ: kiṃ bhavatāṃ bādhata iti | te ūcuḥ: pipāsitāḥ smo bhagavann iti | tato bhagavatā pañcabhyo ’ṅgulibhyo ’ṣṭāṅgopetasya pānīyasya pañca dhārā utsṛṣṭāḥ, yena tāni pañca pretaśatāni saṃtarpitāni | tatas te bhagavato ’ntike cittaṃ prasādya kālagatāḥ | praṇīteṣu deveṣu trāyastriṃśeṣūpapannāḥ ||

dharmatā khalu devaputrasya vā devakanyakāyā vā aciropapannasya trīṇi cittāny utpadyante: kutaś cyutaḥ kutropapannaḥ kena karmaṇeti | te paśyanti pretebhyaś cyutāḥ, praṇīteṣu deveṣu trāyastriṃśeṣūpapannāḥ, bhagavato ’ntike cittam ahiprasādyeti || atha pretapūrviṇāṃ devaputrāṇām etad abhavat: nāsmākaṃ pratirūpaṃ syāt, yad vayaṃ paryuṣitaparivāsā bhagavantaṃ darśanāyopasaṃkrāmema | yan nu vayam aparyuṣitaparivāsā eva bhagavantaṃ darśanāyopasaṃkrāmemeti | atha pretapūrviṇo devaputrāś calavimalakuṇḍaladharā hārārdhahāravirājitagātrā maṇiratnavicitramaulayaḥ kuṅkumatamāla­patras­pṛkkādi­saṃ­sṛṣṭagātrās tasyām eva rātrau divyānām utpalapadmakumuda­puṇḍa­rī­kama­ndāravāṇāṃ puṣpāṇām utsaṅgaṃ pūrayitvā sarvāṃ kūṭāgāraśālāṃ udāreṇāvabhāsenāvabhāsya bhagavataṃ puṣpair avakīrya bhagavataḥ purastān niṣaṇṇā dharmaśravaṇāya | atha bhagavān pretapūrviṇāṃ devaputrāṇām āśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśīṃ caturāryatya­saṃ­prativedhikīṃ dharmadeśanāṃ kṛtavān, yāṃ śrutvā pañcabhir devaputraśatair viṃśatiśikharasamudgataṃ satkāyadṛṣṭiśailaṃ jñānavajreṇa bhitvā srotaāpattiphalam anuprāptam* | sa dṛṣṭasatyā labdhalābhā iva vaṇijaḥ, saṃpannasasyā iva karṣakāḥ, śūrā iva vijitasaṃgrāmāḥ, sarvarogaparimuktā ivāturā yayā vibhūtyā bhagavatsakāśam āgatās tayaiva vibhūtyā bhagavantaṃ triḥ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya svabhavanaṃ gatāḥ ||

atha jāmbālo nagaraparikhām āgatas tān pretān nādrākṣīt* | tataḥ samanveṣitum ārabdhaḥ | sa ca tān parimārgamāṇaḥ khedam āpanno na ca tān āsādayati ||

atrāntare nāsti kiṃcid buddhānāṃ bhagavatām ajñātam adṛṣṭam aviditam avijñātam* | dharmatā khalu buddhānāṃ bhagavatāṃ mahākāruṇikānāṃ lokānugrahapravṛttakānām ekārakṣāṇāṃ śamathavipaśyanāvihāriṇāṃ tridamathavastukuśalānāṃ caturoghottīrṇānāṃ caturṛddhi­pād­acaraṇatalasupratiṣṭhitānāṃ caturṣu saṃgrahavastuṣu dīrgharātrakṛta­pari­cayānāṃ pañcāṅgaviprahīṇānāṃ pañcagatisamatikrāntānāṃ ṣaḍaṅgasamanvāgatānāṃ ṣaṭpāramitāparipūrṇānāṃ sapta­bodhyaṅ­gakusumāḍhyānām aṣṭāṅgamārgadeśikānāṃ navānupūrvavihārasamā­patti­kuśalānāṃ daśabalabalināṃ daśadiksamāpūrṇayaśasāṃ daśa­śata­vaśavartiprativiśiṣṭānāṃ trī rātres trir divasasya ca buddhacakṣuṣā lokaṃ vyavalokya jñānadarśanaṃ pravartate: ko hīyate ko vardhate kaḥ kṛcchraprāptaḥ kaḥ saṃkaṭaprāptaḥ kaḥ saṃbādhaprāptaḥ kaḥ kṛcchra­saṃ­kaṭa­saṃ­bādhaprāptaḥ ko ’pāyanimnaḥ ko ’pāyapravaṇaḥ ko ’pāyaprāgbhāraḥ | kam aham apāyād uddhṛtya svarge mokṣe ca pratiṣṭhāpayeyam*, kasya kāmapaṅkanimagnasya hastoddhāram anupradadyām*, kam āryadhanavirahitam āryadhanaiśvaryādhipatye pratiṣṭhāpayeyam*, kasyāj­ñāna­timirapaṭala­parya­vanaddhanetrasya jñānāñjanaśalākayā cakṣur viśodhayāmi | kasyānavaropitāni kuśalamulāny avaropayeyam*, kasyāvaropitāni paripācayeyam*, kasya paripakvāni vimocayeyam* | āha ca:

apy evātikramed velāṃ sāgaro makarālayaḥ
na tu vaineyavatsānāṃ buddho velām atikramet ||

tato bhagavāñ jāmbālasya kulaputrasyānugrahārthaṃ pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaram ādāya bhikṣugaṇaparivṛto bhikṣusaṃghapuraskṛto vaiśālīṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣat* | yāvad anupūrveṇa piṇḍapātam aṭan vīthīm avatīrṇaḥ | jāmbālaś ca itas tato ’nvāhiṇḍamāno bhagavato ’grataḥ sthitaḥ | atha dadarśa buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ dvātriṃśatā mahāpuruṣalakṣaṇaiḥ samalaṃkṛtam aśītyā cānuvyañjanair virājitagātraṃ vyāmaprabhālaṃkṛtaṃ sūryasahasrātirekaprabhaṃ jaṅgamam iva ratnaparvataṃ samantato bhadrakam* | sahadarśanāc cānena bhagavato ’ntike citaṃ prasāditaṃ* | sa prasādajāto bhagavataḥ pādayor nipatya kṛtakarapuṭa uvāca: yadi bhagavan mādṛśānāṃ satvānām asmin dharmavinaye pravrajyāsti; labheyaṃ svākhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajyām iti | tato bhagavān mahākaruṇāparigatahṛdayaḥ satvānām āśayānuśayajñas taṃ bhavyarūpaṃ viditvā rajabhujasadṛśaṃ suvarṇavarṇabāhum abhiprasāryedam avocat*: ehi bhikṣor cara brahmacaryam* | ity uktamātre bhagavatā saptāhāvaropitair iva keśair dvādaśavarṣopa­saṃ­pannasyeva bhikṣor īryāpathena pātrakarakavyagrahasto ’vasthitaḥ | āha ca:

ehīti coktaḥ sa tathāgatena muṇḍaś ca saṃghāṭiparītadehaḥ
sadyaḥ praśāntendriya eva tasthāv evaṃ sthito buddhamanorathena ||

tato ’sya bhagavatā manasikāro dattaḥ | tena yujyamānena ghaṭamānena vyāyacchamānena idam eva pañcagaṇḍakaṃ saṃsāracakraṃ calācalaṃ viditvā sarvasaṃskāragatīḥ śata­napatanavikiraṇavidhvaṃ­sana­dharma­tayā parāhatya sarvakleśaprahāṇād arhatvaṃ sākṣākṛtam* | arhan saṃvṛttaḥ traidhātukavītarāgaḥ samaloṣṭakāñcana ākāśapāṇitalasamacitto vāsīcandanakalpo vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośo vidyābhijñāprati­saṃ­vitprāpto bhavalābhalobhasat­kāraparāṅmukhaḥ | sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ pūjyo mānyo ’bhivādyaś ca saṃvṛttaḥ | so ’rhatvaprāpto ’pi lūhenābhiramate | tatra bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayate sma: eṣo ’gro me bhikṣavo bhikṣūṇāṃ mama śrāvakāṇāṃ lūhādhimuktānām*, yaduta jāmbālo bhikṣur iti ||

bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kiṃ bhadanta jāmbālena sthavireṇa karma kṛtaṃ yenaivaṃvidhaṃ duḥkham anubhavatīti | bhagavān āha: jāmbalenaiva bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam anyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayāni oghavat pratyupasthitāny avaśyaṃbhāvīni | jāmbālenaiva karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni | ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣv eva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyante śubhāny aśubhāni ca:

na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi api kalpaśatair api
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām* ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvani asminn eva bhadrake kalpe catvāriṃ­śadvarṣa­sahas­rāyuṣi prajāyāṃ krakucchando nāma samyaksaṃbuddho loka udapādi vidyācaraṇasaṃpannaḥ sugato lokavid anuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddho bhagavān* | sa śobhāvatīṃ rājadhānīm upaniśritya viharati | tasyāṃ ca rājadhānyām anyatamena gṛhapatinā vihāraḥ kārito yatra nānādigdeśavāsino bhikṣava āgantavyaṃ gantavyaṃ vastavyaṃ ca manyante | tasmiṃś ca vihāre pṛthagjano bhikṣur naivāsikaḥ | sa cātīvātivāmatsarī Speyer: cātīvāvāsamatsarī | āgantukān bhikṣūn dṛṣṭvā ’bhiṣajyate kupyati vyāpadyate madguḥ pratitiṣṭhati kopaṃ saṃjanayati | ye tu tasmād vihārād bhikṣavaḥ prakrāmanti, tān dṛṣṭvā prītiprāmodyabahalaḥ pratyudgamyābhāṣate ca | yāvad apareṇa samayena janapadād arhadbhikṣur āgataḥ | sa ca vihārasvāmy anāgāmī | tenāsāv īryāpathena saṃlakṣito ’rhann iti | tataḥ prasādajātena śvo bhaktena jentākasnātreṇa copanimantritaḥ sārdhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghena | sa cāvāsiko bhikṣus tatra nāsīt* | yāvad dvitīye divase jentākasnātre pratipādite bhakte sajjīkṛte āvāsiko bhikṣur āgataḥ | so ’pi jentākasnātraṃ praviṣṭaḥ | paśyati vihārasvāminam ekaśāṭakanivasitam āgantukasya bhikṣoḥ parikarma kurvāṇam* | tato ’sya mātsaryam utpannam* | tena praduṣṭacittena kharaṃ vākkarma niścāritam*: varaṃ khalu te bhikṣo amedhyena śarīram upaliptam*, na tu evaṃvidhasya dānapateḥ sakāśād upasthānaṃ svīkṛtam iti | tatas tenārhatā tūṣṇībhāvenādhivāsitam*: mā haivāyaṃ tapasvī gāḍhatarasya karmaṇo bhāgī bhaviṣyatīti | yāvat sāmagrīdeśakāle saṃprāpte naivāsikena bhikṣuṇā śrutam*: arhato ’ntike tvayā cittaṃ pradūṣitam iti | śrutvā cāsya vipratisāro jātaḥ | tato ’rhato bhikṣoḥ pādayor nipatyāha: kṣamasva ārya yan mayā tvayi paruṣā vāg niścāriteti | tato ’rhaṃs tasya prasādābhivṛddhyarthaṃ gaganatalam abhyudgamya vicitrāṇi prātihāryāṇi vidarśayitum ārabdhaḥ | tato ’sya bhūyasā vipratisāraḥ samutpannaḥ | tena tasya purastāt tat karma atyayenādeśitaṃ prakāśitam uttānīkṛtam*, ca na cānena śakitaṃ naiṣṭhikaṃ jñānam utpādayitum* | yāvan maraṇakālasamaye praṇidhiṃ kartum ārabdhaḥ: yan mayārhato ’ntike cittaṃ pradūṣitam*, kharaṃ ca vākkarma niścaritam*, mā asya karmaṇo vipākaṃ pratisaṃvedayeyam* | yat tu mayā paṭhitaṃ svādhyāyitaṃ dānapradānāni dattāni saṃghasya copasthānām kṛtam*, tasya karmaṇo vipākena anāgatān samyaksaṃbuddhān ārāgayeyaṃ mā virāgayeyam iti ||

kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo ’sau tena kālena tena samayenāvāsiko bhikṣuḥ, ayam evāsau jāmbālaḥ | yad anenārhato ’ntike kharaṃ vākkarma niścāritam*, asya karmaṇo vipākenānantaṃ saṃsāre duḥkham anubhūtam* | tenaiva ca karmāvaśeṣeṇa etarhi paścime bhave evaṃ durgandhaḥ paramadurgandho ’medhyāvaskarasthānanivāsābhiprāyaḥ saṃvṛttaḥ | yat punar anena tatra paṭhitaṃ svādhyāyitaṃ skandhakauśalaṃ dhātukauśalam āyatanakauśalaṃ pratītyasamutpādakauśalaṃ sthānāsthānakauśalaṃ ca kṛtam*, tena mama śāsane pravrajya sarvakleśaprahāṇād arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | tasmāt tarhi bhikṣava evaṃ śikṣitavyaṃ yan mātsaryaprahāṇāya vyāyantavyam * | tat kasya hetoḥ? ete doṣā na bhaviṣyanti, ye jāmbālasya pṛthagjanabhūtasya | eṣa eva guṇagaṇo bhaviṣyati, yo ’sau tasyaivārhatvaprāptasya | ity evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam* ||

idam avocad bhagavān | āttamanasas te bhikṣavo ’nye ca devāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragādayo bhagavato bhāṣitam abhyanandan* ||
