56: śukaḥ

buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaḥ śrāvastyāṃ viharati jetavane ’nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme | rājagṛhe nagare rājā bimbisāro rājyaṃ kārayati ṛddhaṃ ca sphītaṃ ca kṣemaṃ ca subhikṣaṃ ca ākīrṇabahujanamanuṣyaṃ ca praśānta­kalikalahaḍimbaḍa­maraṃ taskararogāpagataṃ śālīkṣugomahiṣīsaṃpannam akhilam akaṇṭakam* | ekaputram iva rājyaṃ pālayati | sa ca rājā śrāddho bhadraḥ kalyāṇāśaya ātmahitaparahitapratipannaḥ kāruṇiko mahātmā dharmakāmaḥ prajāvatsalaḥ | yāvad asau bhagavaddarśanotkaṇṭhitaḥ kare kapolaṃ datvā cintāparo vyavasthitaḥ | tato ’mātyar uktaḥ: kimarthaṃ deva śokaḥ kriyata iti | rājovāca: ciradṛṣṭo me sugataḥ | so ’ham ākāṅkṣāmi bhagavato darśanam iti | aśrauṣīd bhagavān divāvihāropagato divyena śrotreṇa viśuddhenātikrāntamānuṣeṇa rājā bimbisāra utkaṇṭhita iti | atrāntare nāsti kiṃcid buddhānāṃ bhagavatām ajñātam adṛṣṭam aviditam avijñātam* | dharmatā khalu buddhānāṃ bhagavatāṃ mahākāruṇikānāṃ lokānugrahapravṛttakānām ekārakṣāṇāṃ śamathavipaśyanāvihāriṇāṃ tridamathavastukuśalānāṃ caturoghottīrṇānāṃ caturṛddhi­pād­acaraṇatalasupratiṣṭhitānāṃ caturṣu saṃgrahavastuṣu dīrgharātrakṛta­pari­cayānāṃ pañcāṅgaviprahīṇānāṃ pañcagatisamatikrāntānāṃ ṣaḍaṅgasamanvāgatānāṃ ṣaṭpāramitāparipūrṇānāṃ sapta­bodhyaṅ­gakusumāḍhyānām aṣṭāṅgamārgadeśikānāṃ navānupūrvavihārasamā­patti­kuśalānāṃ daśabalabalināṃ daśadiksamāpūrṇayaśasāṃ daśa­śata­vaśavartiprativiśiṣṭānāṃ trī rātres trir divasasya buddhacakṣuṣā lokaṃ vyavalokya jñānadarśanaṃ pravartate: ko hīyate ko vardhate kaḥ kṛcchraprāptaḥ kaḥ saṃkaṭaprāptaḥ kaḥ saṃbādhaprāptaḥ kaḥ kṛcchra­saṃ­kaṭa­saṃ­bādhaprāptaḥ ko ’pāyanimnaḥ ko ’pāyapravaṇaḥ ko ’pāyaprāgbhāraḥ, kam aham apāyād uddhṛtya svarge mokṣe ca pratiṣṭhāpayeyam*, kasya kāmapaṅkanimagnasya hastoddhāram anupradadyām*, kam āryadhanavirahitam āryadhanaiśvaryādhipatye pratiṣṭhāpayeyam*, kasyāj­ñāna­timirapaṭala­parya­vanaddhanetrasya jñānāñjanaśalākayā cakṣur viśodhayāmi | kasyānavaropitāni kuśalamulāny avaropayeyam*, kasyāvaropitāni paripācayeyam*, kasya paripakvāni vimocayeyam* | āha ca:

apy evātikramed velāṃ sāgaro makarālayaḥ
na tu vaineyavatsānāṃ buddho velām atikramet ||

tato bhagavān rājño bimbisārasyānugrahārthaṃ trayāṇāṃ vārṣikāṇāṃ māsānām atyayāt kṛtacīvaro niṣṭḥitacīvaraḥ samādāya pātracīvaram janapadacārikāṃ prakrāntaḥ | anupūrveṇa cārikāṃ carann anyatamaṃ vanaṣaṇḍam anuprāptaḥ | tatra ca vanaṣaṇḍe manuṣyapralāpī śukaḥ prativasati | tena bhagavān dūrata dṛṣṭaḥ | tatas tvaritatvaritaṃ bhagavantam uvāca: etu bhagavān, svāgataṃ bhagavate, kriyatām asmākam anugrahaḥ, ihaiva vanaṣaṇḍe ekāṃ rātriṃ prativaseti | tato bhagavāñ chukasyānugrahārthaṃ yatra vkṣe śukasyālayas tatra tṛṇasaṃstaraṃ saṃstīrya paryaṅkeṇa niṣaṇṇaḥ, anyavṛkṣeṣu mahāśrāvakāḥ, tataḥ śukaḥ kṛtsnāṃ rātrim itas tatas taṃ vanaṣaṇḍaṃ paryaṭati, mā haiva kaścid bhagavantaṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaṃ viheṭhayiṣyatīti manuṣyo vā amanuṣyo vā yakṣo vā rākṣaso vā śvāpadaś caṇḍaśṛṅgo veti | tataḥ prabhātāyāṃ rajanyāṃ bhagavantaṃ triḥpradakṣīṇīkṛtya kṣamayitum ārabdhaḥ | kṣamasva bhagavaṃs tiryagyonigato ’ham*, nāsti me vibhavo yena bhagavantam abhyarcayeyam*, api tv aham agrato gacchāmi | rājño bimbisārasya bhagavata āgamanaṃ nivedayāmīti | evam astv iti | yāvad asau rājñaḥ sakāśaṃ saṃprasthitaḥ | anupūrveṇa rājñaḥ sakāśam anuprāptam* | tasmiṃś ca samaye rājā upariprāsādatalagato niṣpuruṣeṇa tūryeṇa krīḍati ramate paricārayati | tataḥ śuko mānuṣapralāpī rājānam uvāca | bho rājan*, viditaṃ te bhavatu: bhagavān saśrāvakasaṃghas tava vijitam anuprāptaḥ | tad arhati devo bhaktaṃ sajjīkartum iti | tato rājā tvaritatvaritaṃ prāsādād avatīryāmātyagaṇaparivṛto bhagavato ’rthena āsanakāni prajñapya chatradhvajapatākābhir vicitraiś ca gandhapuṣpadhūpair bhagavantaṃ pratyudgataḥ | tato rājñā bhagavān saśrāvakasaṃgho mahatā satkāreṇa praveśitaḥ, praṇītena cāhāreṇa saṃtarpitaḥ ||

atha śukasyaitad abhavat*: yad bhagavān saśrāvakasaṃgha evaṃvibhūtis tat sarvaṃ māmāgamya | iti viditvā hṛṣṭatuṣṭapramudita udagraprītisaumanasyajāto rājñaḥ purastād itaś cāmutaś ca paryaṭan* śyenakenāpahṛtya pañcatvam āpāditaḥ | bhagavato ’ntike cittaṃ prasādya kālagataḥ | praṇīteṣu deveṣu trāyastriṃśeṣūpapannaḥ ||

dharmatā khalu devaputrasya vā devakanyāyā vā aciropapannasya trīṇi cittāny utpadyante: kutaś cyutaḥ, kutropapannaḥ kena karmaṇeti | sa paśyati: tiryagbhyaś cyutaḥ praṇīteṣu deveṣu trāyastriṃśeṣūpapannaḥ, bhagavato ’ntike cittam abhiprasādyeti | atha śukapūrviṇo devaputrasyaitad abhavat*: na mama pratirūpaṃ syād yad ahaṃ paryuṣitaparivāso bhagavantaṃ darśanāyopasaṃkrāmeyam* | yanv aham aparyuṣitaparivāsa eva bhagavantaṃ darśanāyopasaṃkrāmeyam iti | atha śukapūrvī devaputraś calavimalakuṇḍaladharo hārārdhahāravirājitagātro maṇiratnavicitracūḍaḥ kuṅkumatamāla­patras­pṛkkādi­saṃ­sṛṣṭagātras tasyām eva rātrau divyānām utpalapadmakumuda­puṇḍa­rī­kama­ndāravāṇām puṣpāṇām utsaṅgaṃ pūrayitvā sarvaṃ jetavanam udāreṇāvabhāsenāvabhāsya bhagavantaṃ puṣpair avakīrya bhagavataḥ purastān niṣaṇṇo dharmaśravaṇāya | atha bhagavāṃś chukapūrviṇo devaputrasyāśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśīṃ caturāryasatya­saṃ­prativedhikīṃ dharmadeśanāṃ kṛtavān, yāṃ śrutvā śukapūrviṇā devaputreṇa viṃśatiśikharasamudgataṃ satkāyadṛṣṭiśailaṃ jñānavajreṇa bhitvā srotaāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | sa dṛṣṭasatyas trir udānam udānayati: idam asmākaṃ bhadanta na mātrā kṛtaṃ na pitrā na rājñā na devatābhir neṣṭena svajanabandhuvargeṇa na pūrvapretair na śramaṇabrāhmaṇair yad bhagavatāsmākaṃ kṛtam* | ucchoṣitā rudhirāśrusamudrāḥ, laṅghitā asthiparvatāḥ, pihitāny apāyadvārāṇi, vivṛtāni svargamokṣadvārāṇi, pratiṣṭhāpitāḥ smo devamanuṣyeṣu | āha ca:

tavānubhāvāt pihitaḥ sughoro
hy apāyamārgo bahudoṣayuktaḥ |
apāvṛtā svargagatiḥ supuṇyā
nirvāṇamārgaś ca mayopalabdhaḥ ||

tvadāśrayāc cāptam apetadoṣaṃ
mayādya śuddhaṃ suviśuddhacakṣuḥ | Speyer: suviśuddha cakṣuḥ
prāptaṃ ca śāntaṃ padam āryakāntaṃ
tīrṇaś ca duḥkhārṇavapāram asmi ||

vigatajanma­jarā­mara­ṇāma­yaṃ
bhava­sahas­rasudurlabhadarśana
saphalam adya mune tava darśanam* ||

avanamya tataḥ pralambahāraś
caraṇau dvāv abhivandya jātaharṣaḥ
parigamya ca dakṣiṇaṃ jitāriṃ
suralokābhimukho divaṃ jagāma ||

atha śukapūrvī devaputro vaṇig iva labdhalābhaḥ, sasyasaṃpanna iva karṣakaḥ śūra iva vijitasaṃgrāmaḥ, sarvarogaparimukta ivāturo yayā vibhūtyā bhagavatsakāśam āgatas tayaiva vibhūtyā svabhavanaṃ gataḥ ||

bhikṣavaḥ pūrvarātrāpararātraṃ jāgarikāyogam anuyuktā viharanti | tair dṛṣṭo bhagavato ’ntike udāro ’vabhāsaḥ | yaṃ dṛṣṭvā saṃdigdhā bhagavantaṃ paprachuḥ: kiṃ bhagavann asyāṃ rātrau bhagavantaṃ darśanāya brahmā sahāṃpatiḥ śakro devendraś catvāro lokapālā upasaṃkrāntāḥ? bhagavān āha: na bhikṣavo brahmā sahāṃpatir na śakro devendro nāpi catvāro lokapālā māṃ darśanāyopasaṃkrāntāḥ | api tu dṛṣṭaḥ sa yuṣmābhiḥ śuko yena vayaṃ tasmin vanaṣaṇḍe rātriṃ vastum upanimintritā iti? bhikṣava ūcuḥ: evaṃ bhadanteti | bhagavān āha: sa eṣa bhikṣavaḥ kālaṃ kṛtvā, praṇīteṣū deveṣu trāyastriṃśeṣūpapanna iti | bhikṣava ūcuḥ: kāni bhadanta śukapūrvakeṇa devaputreṇa karmāṇi kṛtāni yena śukeṣūpapannaḥ, kāni karmāṇi kṛtāni yena deveṣūpapannaḥ, satyadarśanaṃ ca kṛtam iti | bhagavān āha: śukapūrvakeṇaiva bhikṣavo devaputreṇa pūrvam anyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayāni oghavat pratyupasthitāny avaśyaṃbhāvīni | śukapūrvakeṇa devaputreṇa karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni | ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣv eva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyante śubhāny aśubhāni ca:

na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi api kalpaśatair api
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām* ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvani asminn eva bhadrake kalpe viṃśativarṣasahasrāyuṣi prajāyāṃ kāśyapo nāma samyaksaṃbuddho loka udapādi vidyācaraṇasaṃpannaḥ sugato lokavid anuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddho bhagavān* | sa vārāṇasīṃ nagarīm upaniśritya viharati sma | tasyānyatama upāsakaḥ | tena śikṣāśaithilyaṃ kṛtam* | tasya karmaṇo vipākāc chukeṣūpapannaḥ | yan mayāntike cittaṃ prasāditam*, tena deveṣūpapannaḥ | yat tena pariṣiṣṭāni śikṣāpadāni rakṣitāni, tena satyadarśanaṃ kṛtam* | iti hi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇām ekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekāntaśuklānām ekāntaśuklaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ | tasmāt tarhi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇy apāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣv eva karmasv ābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | ity evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam* ||

idam avocad bhagavān* | āttamanasas te bhikṣavo bhagavato bhāṣitam abhyanandan* ||
