58: mahiṣaḥ

buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaḥ kośaleṣu janapadeṣu cārikāṃ carann anyatamavanaṣaṇḍam anuprāptaḥ | tatra ca vanaṣaṇḍe mahān mahiṣīyūthaḥ prativasati, pañcamātrāṇi ca mahiṣīpālaśatāni | yāvat tatrānyatamo mahiṣo balavān parameṇa balena samanvāgataḥ | sa paramanuṣyāṇāṃ gandham āghrāya pṛṣṭhato ’nudhāvati | bhagavāṃś ca taṃ pradeśam anuprāpatḥ | tato mahiṣīpālair bhagavān saśrāvakasaṃgho dūrata eva dṛṣṭaḥ | tatas tair uccaiḥ śabdair uktaḥ: bhagavan, imaṃ mārgaṃ varjaya, duṣṭamahiṣo ’tra prativasatīti | bhagavān āha: alpotsukā bhavantu bhavantaḥ | vayam atra kālajñā bhaviṣyāma iti | athāsau duṣṭamahiṣo bhagavantaṃ dūrata eva dṛṣṭvā lāṅgūlam unnāmya yena bhagavāṃs tena pradhāvitaḥ | tato bhagavatā purastāt pañca kesariṇaḥ saṭādhāriṇaḥ Speyer: keśariṇaḥ saṭadhāriṇaḥ siṃhā nirmitāḥ, vāme dakṣiṇe ca pārśve dvāv agniskandhau, upariṣṭān mahatyayomayī śilā | tataḥ sa mahiṣaḥ samantato mahābhayaṃ dṛṣṭvā bhagavataḥ pādau niśritya dīnavadanaś ca bhagavantaṃ prekṣyate Speyer: prekṣate | tato ’sya bhagavatā tanmayyā gatyās tanmayyā yonyās tribhiḥ pādair dharmo deśitaḥ: iti hi bhadramukha sarvasaṃskārā anityāḥ, sarvadharmā anātmānaḥ, śāntaṃ nirvāṇam iti | jātiś ca smāritā | sa śrutvā rodituṃ pravṛttaḥ | atha bhagavāṃs tasyāṃ velāyāṃ gāthe bhāṣate:

idānīṃ kiṃ kariṣyāmi tiryagyonigatasya te
akṣaṇapratipannasya kiṃ rodiṣi nirarthakam* ||

sādhu prasādyatāṃ cittaṃ mayi kāruṇike jine
tiryagyoniṃ virāgyeha tataḥ svargaṃ gamiṣyasi || AVŚ_58.2|| iti ||

athāsau duṣṭamahiṣaḥ svāśrayaṃ jugupsamāno ’nāhāratāṃ pratipannaḥ | dīptāgnayas tiryagyonigatāḥ prāṇinaḥ | sa āśu kālaṃ kṛtvā praṇīteṣu deveṣu trāyastriṃśeṣūpapannaḥ ||

dharmatā khalu devaputrasya vā devakanyāyā vā aciropapannasya trīṇi cittāny utpadyante: kutaś cyutaḥ, kutropapannaḥ kena karmaṇeti | sa paśyati: tiryagbhyaś cyutaḥ praṇīteṣu deveṣu trāyastriṃśeṣūpapannaḥ, bhagavato ’ntike cittam abhiprasādyeti | atha mahiṣapūrviṇo devaputrasyaitad abhavat*: na mama pratirūpaṃ syād yad ahaṃ paryuṣitaparivāso bhagavantaṃ darśanāyopasaṃkrāmeyam* | yanv aham aparyuṣitaparivāsa eva bhagavantaṃ darśanāyopasaṃkrāmeyam iti | atha mahiṣapūrvī devaputraś calavimalakuṇḍaladharo hārārdhahāravirājitagātro maṇiratnavicitracūḍaḥ kuṅkumatamāla­patras­pṛkkādi­saṃ­sṛṣṭagātras tasyām eva rātrau divyānām utpalapadmakumuda­puṇḍa­rī­kama­ndāravāṇāṃ puṣpāṇām utsaṅgaṃ pūrayitvā sarvaṃ taṃ vanaṣaṇḍam udāreṇāvabhāsenāvabhāsya bhagavantaṃ puṣpair avakīrya bhagavataḥ purastān niṣaṇṇo dharmaśravaṇāya | atha bhagavān mahiṣapūrviṇo devaputrasyāśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśīṃ caturāryasatya­saṃ­prativedhikīṃ dharmadeśanāṃ kṛtavān, yāṃ śrutvā mahiṣapūrviṇā devaputreṇa viṃśatiśikharasamudgataṃ satkāyadṛṣṭiśailaṃ jñānavajreṇa bhitvā srotaāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | sa dṛṣṭasatyas trir udānam udānayati: idam asmākaṃ bhadanta na mātrā kṛtaṃ na pitrā na rājñā na devatābhir neṣṭena svajanabandhuvargeṇa na pūrvapretair na śramaṇabrāhmaṇair yad bhagavatāsmākaṃ kṛtam* | ucchoṣitā rudhirāśrusamudrāḥ, laṅghitā asthiparvatāḥ, pihitāny apāyadvārāṇi, vivṛtāni svargamokṣadvārāṇi, pratiṣṭhāpitāḥ smo devamanuṣyeṣu | āha ca:

tavānubhāvāt pihitaḥ sughoro
hy apāyamārgo bahudoṣayuktaḥ |
apāvṛtā svargagatiḥ supuṇyā
nirvāṇamārgaś ca mayopalabdhaḥ ||

tvadāśrayāc cāptam apetadoṣaṃ
mayādya śuddhaṃ suviśuddhacakṣuḥ | Speyer: suviśuddha cakṣuḥ
prāptaṃ ca śāntaṃ padam āryakāntaṃ
tīrṇaś ca duḥkhārṇavapāram asmi ||

avanamya tataḥ pralambahāraś
caraṇau dvāv abhivandya jātaharṣaḥ
parigamya ca dakṣiṇaṃ jitāriṃ
suralokābhimukho divaṃ jagāma ||

atha tair mahiṣīpālaiḥ sa udāro ’vabhāso dṛṣṭaḥ, yaṃ dṛṣṭvā kutūhalajātā bhagavantaṃ paprachuḥ: ka eṣa bhagavan*, rātrau divyam avabhāsaṃ kṛtvā bhagavatsakāśam anuprāpta iti | bhagavān āha: sa eṣa bhavanto mahiṣo mamāntike cittam abhiprasādya kālagataḥ praṇīteṣu deveṣu trāyastriṃśeṣūpapannaḥ | so ’syāṃ rātrau matsakāśam upasaṃkrāntaḥ | tasya mayā dharmo deśitaḥ | sa dṛṣṭasatyaḥ svabhavanaṃ gataḥ | tatas te mahiṣīpālāḥ paraṃ vismayam āpannāḥ: āścaryaṃ yan nāma ayaṃ tiryagyonigato bhūtvā bhagavantaṃ kalyāṇamitram āsādya deveṣūpapannaḥ, satyadarśanaṃ ca kṛtam* | kathaṃ nāma vayaṃ manuṣyabhūtā viśeṣaṃ nādhigacchemeti? tatas te buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaṃ praṇītenāhāreṇa saṃtarpya bhagavato ’ntike pravrajitāḥ | tair yujyamānair ghaṭamānair vyāyacchamānaiḥ sarvakleśaprahāṇād arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* ||

bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kāni bhadanta mahiṣapūrvikeṇa devaputreṇa karmāṇi kṛtāni yena mahiṣeṣūpapannaḥ? ebhiś ca mahiṣīpālaiḥ kiṃ karma kṛtaṃ yenāhartvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam*? bhagavān āha: ebhir eva bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam anyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayāni oghavat pratyupasthitāny avaśyaṃbhāvīni | ebhiḥ karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni | ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣv eva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyante śubhāny aśubhāni ca:

na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatair api
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām* ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvani asminn eva bhadrake kalpe viṃśatisahasrāyuṣi prajāyāṃ kāśyapo nāma samyaksaṃbuddho loka udapādi vidyācaraṇasaṃpannaḥ sugato lokavid anuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddho bhagavān* | sa vārāṇasīṃ nagarīm upaniśritya viharati
ṛṣipatane mṛgadāve | tatra ca kāle bhikṣūṇāṃ viniścaye vartamāne tripiṭo bhikṣuḥ pañcaśataparivāro viniścaye ’avasthitaḥ | tatra ca bhikṣavaḥ śaikṣāśaikṣāḥ | te tripiṭaṃ praśnaṃ pṛcchanti | sa na śaknoti vyākartum* | tena kupitena kharaṃ vākkarma niścāritam*: ime ca mahiṣā kiṃ prajānantīti | śiṣyair apy asyoktam: ime mahiṣīpālāḥ kiṃ prajānantīti ||

bhagavān āha: kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo ’sau mahiṣaḥ, ayam asau tripiṭaḥ | ye te śiṣyāḥ, ime te mahiṣīpālāḥ | tena karmaṇā pañca janmaśatāni mahiṣeṣūpapannāḥ | imāni ca pañca mahiṣīpālaśatāni saṃvṛttāni | yan mamāntike cittaṃ prasāditaṃ tena deveṣūpapannaḥ, satyadarśanaṃ ca kṛtam* | tasmāt tarhi bhikṣava vāgduścaritaprahāṇāya vyāyantavyaṃ yathā ete doṣā na bhaviṣyanti ye mahiṣasya mahiṣīpālāṇāṃ ca | eṣa eva guṇagaṇo bhaviṣyati yas tasyaiva devaputrabhūtasya | ity evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam* ||

idam avocad bhagavān* | āttamanasas te bhikṣavo bhagavato bhāṣitam abhyanandan* ||
