61: suvarṇābhaḥ

tasyoddānam*
suvarṇābhaḥ sugandhiś ca vapuṣmān balavān priyaḥ
padmākṣo dundubhiḥ putrāḥ sūryo mallapatākayā ||

buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaḥ kapilavastuni viharati nyagrodhārāme | kapilavastuni anyatamaḥ śākya āḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogo vistīrṇaviśālaparigraho vaiśravaṇadhanasamudito vaiśravaṇadhanapratispardhī | tena sadṛśāt kulāt kalatram ānītam* | sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ patnī āpannasatvā saṃvṛttā | sā aṣṭānāṃ vā navānāṃ vā māsānām atyayāt prasūtā | dārako jāto ’bhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādiko ’tikrānto mānuṣavarṇam asaṃprāptaś ca divyaṃ varṇaṃ jāmbūnadaniṣkasadṛśaḥ | suvarṇavarṇayā cānena prabhayā sarvaṃ kapilavastu nagaram avabhāsitam* | taddarśanān mātāpitarāv anye ca kutūhalābhyāgatāḥ satvāḥ paraṃ vismayam āgatāḥ | cintayanti ca: kuto ’yam īdṛśaḥ satvaviśeṣa iti | tasya jātau jātimahaṃ kṛtvā nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpyate: kiṃ bhavatu dārakasya nāmeti | jñātaya ūcuḥ: yasmād anena jātena suvarṇavarṇayā prabhayā sarvaṃ kapilavastu nagaram avabhāsitam*, tasmād bhavatu dārakasya suvarṇābha iti nāmeti | suvarṇābho dārako ’ṣṭābhyo dhātrībhyo ’nupradatto dvābhyām aṃsadhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ kṣīradhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ maladhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ krīḍanikābhyāṃ dhātrībhyām* | so ’ṣṭābhir dhātrībhir unnīyate vardhyate kṣīreṇa dadhnā navanītena sarpiṣā sarpimaṇḍenānyaiś cottaptottaptair upakaraṇaviśeṣaiḥ | āśu vardhate hradastham iva paṅkajam* | sa ca paṇḍito vyakto medhāvī śrāddho bhadraḥ kalyāṇāśaya ātmahitaparahitapratipannaḥ kāruṇiko mahātmā dharmakāmaḥ ||

yāvad apareṇa samayena rūpamadamatto bahir adhiṣṭhānasya krīḍati | saṃbahulāś ca śākyā nyagrodhārāmaṃ gacchanti | tatas tena suvarṇābhena dṛṣṭāḥ pṛṣṭāś ca: kva bhavanto gacchantīti | tair uktam*: nyagrodhārāmaṃ gacchāmo buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ draṣṭum iti | suvarṇābhasya buddha ity aśrutapūrvaṃ nāma śrutvā sarvaromakūpāṇy āhṛṣṭani, paramaṃ ca kutūhalam utpannam* | tasyaitad abhavat*: yanv aham api buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ darśanāyopasaṃkrāmeyam iti | so ’pi nyagrodhārāmaṃ gacchati | tatas tatra dadarśa suvarṇābhakumāro buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ dvātriṃśatā mahāpuruṣalakṣaṇaiḥ samalaṃkṛtam aśītyā cānuvyañjanair virājitagātraṃ vyāmaprabhālaṃkṛtaṃ sūryasahasrātirekaprabhaṃ jaṅgamam iva ratnaparvataṃ samantato bhadrakam* | sahadarśanāc cāsya
yo ’sau rūpamadaḥ sa prativigataḥ | sa bhagavataḥ pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā purastān niṣaṇṇo dharmaśravaṇāya | tasya bhagavatā dharmo deśitaḥ | sa taṃ dharmaṃ śrutvā pravrajyābhilāṣī saṃvṛttaḥ | yāvan mātāpitarāv anujñāpya bhagavatsakāśam upasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā yena bhagavāṃs tenāñjaliṃ praṇamayya bhagavantam idam avocat*: labheyāhaṃ bhadanta svākhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajyām upasaṃpadaṃ bhikṣubhāvam* | careyam ahaṃ bhagavato ’ntike brahmacaryam iti | tato bhagavān gajabhujasadṛśaṃ suvarṇavarṇabāhum abhiprasārya suvarṇābhadārakam idam avocat*: ehi kumāra, cara brahmacaryam iti |

ehīti coktaḥ sa tathāgatena muṇḍaś ca saṃghāṭiparītadehaḥ
sadyaḥ praśāntendriya eva tasthāv evaṃ sthito buddhamanorathena ||

yāvat saptāhāvaropitakeśaśmaśrur dvādaśavarṣopa­saṃ­panneryāpathaḥ pātrakaravyagrahasto bhagavataḥ purastāt sthitaḥ | tasya bhagavatā manasikāro dattaḥ | tena yujyamānena vyāyacchamānena ghaṭamānena idam eva pañcagaṇḍakaṃ saṃsāracakraṃ calācalaṃ viditvā sarvasaṃskāragatīḥ śata­napatanavikaraṇavidhvaṃ­sana­dharma­tayā parāhatya sarvakleśaprahāṇād arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | arhan saṃvṛttaḥ traidhātukavītarāgaḥ samaloṣṭakāñcana ākāśapāṇitalasamacitto vāsīcandanakalpo vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośo vidyābhijñāprati­saṃ­vitprāpto bhavalābhalobhasat­kāraparāṅmukhaḥ | sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ pūjyo mānyo ’bhivādyaś ca saṃvṛttaḥ |

bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kāni bhadanta suvarṇābhena karmāṇi kṛtāni yenaivaṃrūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādikaḥ pravrajya ca acirād Speyer: cāciraṃ arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam iti | bhagavān āha: suvarṇābhenaiva bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam anyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayāni oghavat pratyupasthitāny avaśyaṃbhāvīni | suvarṇābhena karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni | ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣv eva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyante śubhāny aśubhāni ca:

na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi api kalpaśatair api
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām* ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvani ekanavate kalpe vipaśyī nāma samyaksaṃbuddho loka udapādi vidyācaraṇasaṃpannaḥ sugato lokavid anuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddho bhagavān* | sa bandhumatīṃ rājadhānīm upaniśritya viharati | yāvad vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddho buddhakāryaṃ kṛtvā indhanakṣayād ivāgnir nirupadhiśeṣe nirvāṇadhātau parinirvṛtaḥ | tato rājñā bandhumatā bhagavataḥ śarīre śarīrapūjāṃ kṛtvā samantayojanaḥ stūpaś catūratnamayaḥ pratiṣṭhāpitaḥ krośam uccatvena | stūpamahaś ca prajñaptaḥ | yāvad anyatamo gṛhapatis tasmin stūpamahe vartamāne nirgataḥ | tena tasmāt stūpāt sauvarṇavarṇa ādarśaḥ patito dṛṣṭaḥ | sa tenāvataṃsakaṃ kārayitvā tatra stūpe āropitaḥ | gandhadhūpapuṣpārcanaṃ kṛtvā pādayor nipatya praṇidhānaṃ kṛtam*: aham apy evaṃvidhānāṃ guṇānāṃ lābhī bhaviṣyāmi, evaṃvidham eva śāstāram ārāgayeyam iti ||

bhagavān āha: kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo ’sau tena kālena tena samayena gṛhapatir āsīt*, ayaṃ sa suvarṇābhaḥ | yat tena vipaśyinaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhasya stūpe kārāḥ kṛtāḥ, tenāsyaivaṃvidho rūpaviśeṣaḥ saṃvṛttaḥ | yat praṇidhānaṃ kṛtaṃ tad ihaiva janmany arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | iti hi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇām ekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekāntaśuklānām ekāntaśuklaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ | tasmāt tarhi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇy apāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣv eva karmasv ābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | ity evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam* ||

idam avocad bhagavān* | āttamanasas te bhikṣavo bhagavato bhāṣitam abhyanandan* ||
