buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaḥ śrāvastyāṃ viharati jetavane ’nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme | tena khalu samayena prasenajit kauśalo rājyaṃ kārayati ṛddhaṃ ca sphītaṃ ca kṣemaṃ ca subhikṣaṃ ca ākīrṇabahujanamanuṣyaṃ ca praśānta­kalikalahaḍimbaḍa­maraṃ taskararogāpagataṃ śālīkṣugomahiṣīsaṃpannam* | priyam ivaikaputrakaṃ rājyaṃ pālayati | yāvat sa rājā anyatamayā devyā saha krīḍati ramate paricārayati | tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ patnī āpannasatvā saṃvṛttā | sā aṣṭānāṃ vā navānāṃ vā māsānām atyayāt prasūtā | dārikā jātā aṣṭādaśabhir daurvarṇikair aṅgaiḥ samanvāgatā | tasyā jātau jātimahaṃ kṛtvā virūpeti nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpyate | yadā krameṇa mahatī saṃvṛttā, tadā yasmai pradīyate, sa tāṃ virūpeti kṛtvā na pratigṛhṇāti ||

yāvad dakṣiṇāpathād gaṅgo nāma sārthavāho ’bhyāgato vistīrṇavibhavaḥ | tato rājñaḥ prasenajito buddhir utpannā: ayaṃ gaṅgasārthavāha etasyā doṣeṣv anabhijñaḥ | yanv aham asmai dāsyāmīti | tato rājñā rātrau saṃprāptāyāṃ bhagnacakṣuṣpathe Speyer: bhagne cakṣuṣpathe gaṅgaṃ dūtenāhvāpya sā dārikā sarvālaṃkāravibhūṣitā bhāryārthe dattā gaṅgāya | ### gaṅgarasthā gaṅgarastheti saṃjñā prādurbhūtā ||

yāvad gaṅgena sārthavāhena dvitīye divase prabhātāyāṃ rajanyāṃ sā dārikā dṛṣṭā paramabībhatsā | yāṃ dṛṣṭvā rājāpekṣayā na śaknoty avamoktum* | svagṛhe dhārayati ||

yāvad gaṅgaḥ sārthavāhaḥ kasmiṃścit parvaṇy upasthite goṣṭhikānāṃ madhyaṃ gataḥ | goṣṭhikaiś ca kriyākāraḥ kṛtaḥ: saha bhāryayā amukam udyānaṃ yo no yāsyati, sa goṣṭhikānāṃ pañca purāṇaśatāni daṇḍam anupradāsyatīti | tato gaṅgaḥ svagṛham āgatya śokāgāraṃ praviśya kare kapolaṃ kṛtvā cintāparo vyavasthitaḥ | tasya buddhir utpannā: varam ahaṃ daṇḍaṃ dadyām*, na cāham etām eteṣāṃ darśayeyam* | sahadarśanāc cāvagīto bhaviṣyāmīti | atha gaṅgo dvāraṃ baddhvā pañca purāṇaśatāni daṇḍaṃ gṛhītvā goṣṭhikānāṃ madhyaṃ gataḥ | tato dārikāyā mahad daurmanasyam utpannam*: kiṃ mamānenaivaṃvidhena jīvitena, yatra me na ca svāmicittaṃ sukhitam*, na cāham* | kim atra prāptakālam* | ātmānaṃ ghātayiṣyāmīti | tato rajjuṃ gṛhītvā avarakaṃ praviṣṭā udbandhanahetoḥ ||

atrāntare nāsti kiṃcid buddhānāṃ bhagavatām ajñātam adṛṣṭam aviditam avijñātam* | dharmatā khalu buddhānāṃ bhagavatāṃ mahākāruṇikānāṃ lokānugrahapravṛttakānām ekārakṣāṇām śamathavipaśyanāvihāriṇāṃ tridamathavastukuśalānāṃ caturoghottīrṇānāṃ caturṛddhi­pād­acaraṇatalasupratiṣṭhitānāṃ pañcāṅgaviprahīṇānāṃ pañcagatisamatikrāntānāṃ ṣaḍaṅgasamanvāgatānāṃ ṣaṭpāramitāparipūrṇānāṃ sapta­bodhyaṅ­gakusumāḍhyānām aṣṭāṅgamārgadeśikānāṃ navānupūrvavihārasamā­patti­kuśalānāṃ daśabalabalināṃ daśadiksamāpūrṇayaśasāṃ daśa­śata­vaśavartiprativiśiṣṭānāṃ trī rātres trir divasasya buddhacakṣuṣā lokaṃ vyavalokya jñānadarśanaṃ pravartate: ko hīyate ko vardhate kaḥ kṛcchraprāptaḥ kaḥ saṃkaṭaprāptaḥ kaḥ saṃbādhaprāptaḥ kaḥ kṛcchra­saṃ­kaṭa­saṃ­bādhaprāptaḥ, ko ’pāyanimnaḥ ko ’pāyapravaṇaḥ ko ’pāyaprāgbhāraḥ | kam aham apāyād uddhṛtya svarge mokṣe ca pratiṣṭhāpayeyam*, kasyānavaropitāni kuśalamulāny avaropayeyam*, kasyāvaropitāni paripācayeyam*, kasya paripakvāni vimocayeyam* | āha ca:

apy evātikramed velāṃ sāgaro makarālayaḥ
na tu vaineyavatsānāṃ buddho velām atikramet ||

tato bhagavatā jetavanāvasthitena kanakavarṇā prabhā utsṛṣṭā, yayā tad gṛhaṃ sūrya­sahas­reṇevāvabhāsitam* | ṛddhyā copasaṃkramya tadgalād udbandhanam avamucya dārikāṃ samāśvāsitavān* | ṣaṇṇāṃ sthānānām āścaryādbhuto loke prādurbhāvaḥ | tathāgatasya tathāgatapraveditasya dharmavinayasya manuṣyatvasya āryāyatane pratyājātatvasya indriyair avikalatvasya kuśaladharmacchandakasya āścaryādbhuto loke prādurbhāvaḥ | tato bhagavatā tasyā dārikāyās tathāvidhā dharmadeśanā kṛtā, yāṃ śrutvā viṃśatiśikharasamudgataṃ satkāyadṛṣṭiśailaṃ jñānavajreṇa bhitvā srotāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | tato labdhaprasādayā bhagavān bhaktena pratipāditaḥ paṭena cācchāditaḥ | tato dārikāyā apagatā alakṣmīḥ | lakṣmīḥ prādurbhūtā | devakanyeva cāvarakam avabhāsamānā sthitā | bhagavān api prakrāntaḥ ||

tato goṣṭhikānāṃ buddhir utpannā: nūnam asya bhāryā paramadarśanīyā saṃvṛttā | sa eṣa īrṣyāprakṛtir daṇḍam utsahate dātum*, na ca tāṃ darśayitum icchati | yan nu vayam enaṃ viruddhair madyaiḥ pāyayitvā tāḍam ādāya gṛham asya gatvā bhāryāṃ paśyemeti | tatas tais taṃ ghanaghanena viruddhamadyena pānena kṣībaṃ Speyer: kṣīvaṃ kṛtvā tāḍam apahṛtya gṛhaṃ gatvā dvāram avamucya dārikā dṛṣṭā | tato dṛṣṭvā paraṃ vismayam upagatāś cintayanti: sthāne ’sau na darśayaty asmākam iti | tatas te punar āgatya madyavaśāt suptam utthāpya ūcuḥ: lābhās te gaṅga sulabdhāḥ, yasya te evaṃvidhā darśanīyā dāriketi | tato gaṅgo bhūyasyā mātrayā duḥkhī durmanā saṃvṛttā | daṇḍaḥ svayaṃ mayā dattaḥ, ahaṃ cāvagīto jāta iti | tato durmanāḥ svagṛham āgataḥ | dvāram avamucya tāṃ bhāryāṃ dṛṣṭavān vanadevatām iva kusumitamadhye ’tīva vibhrājamānām* | tataḥ pṛcchati: bhadre kim etat*? kiṃ kṛto rūpaviśeṣa iti | tatas tayā yathāvṛttaṃ svāmine samākhyātam* | śrutvā tenāpi bhagavati śraddhā pratilabdhā ||

yāvad asau dārikā krameṇa bhartāram anujñāpya bhagavacchāsane pravrajitā | tayā yujyamānayā ghaṭamānayā vyāyacchamānayā idam eva pañcagaṇḍakaṃ saṃsāracakraṃ calācalaṃ viditvā sarvasaṃskāragatīḥ śata­napatanavikiraṇavidhvaṃ­sana­dharma­tayā parāhatya sarvakleśaprahāṇād arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | arhantī saṃvṛttā traidhātukavītarāgā samaloṣṭakāñcanā ākāśapāṇitalasamacittā vāsīcandanakalpā vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośā vidyābhijñāprati­saṃ­vitprāptā bhavalābhalobhasat­kāraparāṅmukhā | sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ pūjyā mānyā abhivādyā ca saṃvṛttā ||

bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kiṃ bhadanta gaṅgarasthayā karma kṛtam*, yenāḍhye jātā | kiṃ karma kṛtaṃ yena virūpā saṃvṛttā, pravrajya cārhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam iti | bhagavān āha: gaṅgarasthayaiva bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam anyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayāni oghavat pratyupasthitāny avaśyaṃbhāvīni | gaṅgarasthayā karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni | ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣv eva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyante śubhāny aśubhāni ca:

na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatair api
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām* ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvani vārāṇasyāṃ nagaryām anyatamā śreṣṭhibhāryā caṇḍā rabhasā karkaśā | asati buddhānām utpāde pratyekabuddhā loka utpadyante hīnadīnānukampakāḥ prāntaśayanāsanabhaktā ekadakṣiṇīyā lokasya | yāvad anyataraḥ pratyekabuddhas tad gṛhaṃ praviṣṭo virūpaḥ | sa tayā bahu paribhāṣya gṛhān niṣkāsitaḥ: kenāyaṃ virūpo mama gṛhe praveśita iti | tataḥ pratyekabuddhas tasyā anugrahārthaṃ vitatapakṣa iva haṃsarājo gaganatalam abhyudgamya vicitrāṇi prātihāryāṇi vidarśayitum ārabdhaḥ | tataḥ śreṣṭhibhāryayā vipratisārajātayā ### kṣamas­vety uktaḥ | yāvad asau kṣamitaḥ piṇḍakena pratipāditaś ca | praṇidhānaṃ ca kṛtam*: yan mayā pratyekabuddhaḥ paribhāṣitaḥ, mā asya karmaṇo vipākam anubhaveyam*, evaṃvidhānāṃ ca dharmāṇāṃ lābhinī syāṃ*, prativiśiṣṭataraṃ ca śāstāram ārāgayeyam iti ||

kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yāsau śreṣṭhibhāryā, iyam asau gaṅgarasthā | yad anayā pratyekabuddhaḥ piṇḍakena pratipāditaḥ, tasya karmaṇo vipākenāḍhye rājakule pratyāgatā | yad virūpāvavādena samudācarya gṛhān niṣkāsitaḥ, tena virūpā saṃvṛttā | bhūyaḥ kāśyape bhagavati pravrajitā āsīt* | tatrānayā paṭhitaṃ svādhyāyitaṃ skandhakauśalam āyatanakauśalaṃ pratītyasamutpādakauśalaṃ sthānāsthānakauśalaṃ kṛtam*, brahmacaryavāsaś ca paripālitaḥ, tenedānīm arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | iti hi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇām ekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekāntaśuklānām ekāntaśuklaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ | tasmāt tarhi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇy apāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣv eva karmasv ābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | ity evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam* ||
