82: sumanāḥ

buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaḥ śrāvastyāṃ viharati jetavane ’nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme | śrāvastyām anyatamo gṛhapatir āḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogo vistīrṇaviśālaparigraho vaiśravaṇadhanasamudito vaiśravaṇadhanapratispardhī | tena sadṛśāt kulāt kalatram ānītam* | sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ putrāḥ prajāyante ca mriyante ca | tasmiṃś ca gṛhe sthaviro ’niruddhaḥ kulopagataḥ | tato gṛhapater iyaṃ buddhir utpannā: ayaṃ sthavirāniruddho vipākamaheśākhyaḥ, etaṃ tāvad āyāciṣye: yadi me putro jāyate, asya paścācchramaṇaṃ dasyāmīti | tato gṛhapatinā sthavirāniruddho ’ntargṛhe bhaktenopanimantritaḥ | tataḥ piṇḍakena pratipādyāyācitaḥ: yadi me putro jāto jīvati, sthavirasya paścācchramaṇaṃ dasyāmīti | sthavirāniruddhenoktam*: evam astu, kiṃ tu smartavyā te pratijñeti ||

yāvad apareṇa samayena patnyā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ patnī āpannasatvā saṃvṛttā | tasyāḥ kāyāt surabhir gandhaḥ pravāti | yāvan navānāṃ māsānām atyayāt prasūtā | dārako jātaḥ abhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādiko divyasumanaḥkañcikayā prāvṛtaḥ | tasya jātau jātimahaṃ kṛtvā sumanā iti nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpitam* | tataḥ sthavirāniruddham antargṛhe bhaktenopanimantrya sa dārako niryātitaḥ | tataḥ sthavirāniruddhenāsmai kāṣāyāṇi dattāni, āśīr vādaś ca: dīrghāyur bhavatv iti ||

yadā saptavarṣo jātas tadā mātāpitṛbhyāṃ sthavirāya dattaḥ | tataḥ sthavirāniruddhena pravrājya manasikāro dattaḥ | tena yujyamānena ghaṭamānena vyāyacchamānena idam eva pañcagaṇḍakaṃ saṃsāracakraṃ calācalaṃ viditvā sarvasaṃskāragatīḥ śata­napatanavikiraṇavidhvaṃ­sana­dharma­tayā parāhatya sarvakleśaprahāṇād arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | arhan saṃvṛttaḥ traidhātukavītarāgaḥ samaloṣṭakāñcana ākāśapāṇitalasamacitto vāsīcandanakalpo vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośo vidyābhijñāprati­saṃ­vitprāpto bhavalābhalobhasat­kāraparāṅmukhaḥ | sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ pūjyo mānyo ’bhivādyaś ca saṃvṛttaḥ | sa ca tīkṣṇendriyaḥ | yadā pāṃsukūlaṃ pratisaṃskaroti, tadā ekaikasmin* sūcīpradeśe aṣṭau vimokṣān samāpadyate ca vyuttiṣṭhate ca ||

yāvad apareṇa samayena sthavirāniruddhenoktaḥ: gaccha putraka, nadyā ajiravatyā udakam ānayeti | tataḥ sumanāḥ śramaṇoddeśo ghaṭam ādāyājiravatīm avatīrṇaḥ | tatra snātvā udakasya ghaṭaṃ pūrayitvā vihāyasaṃ prasthitaḥ | agrato ghaṭo gacchati, tataḥ sumanāḥ śramaṇoddeśaḥ | tasmiṃś ca samaye bhagavān pratisaṃlayanād vyutthāya catasṛṇāṃ parṣadāṃ dharmaṃ deśayati | tatra bhagavān āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram āmantrayate: imaṃ paśya śāriputra śramaṇoddeśam āgacchantam udakasya ghaṭaṃ pūrayitvā smṛtimantaṃ susamāhitendriyam* |

hitvā rāgaṃ ca dveṣaṃ ca abhidhyāṃ ca virāgayan*
saṃghārayann imaṃ dehaṃ śobhate udahārakaḥ ||

yadā bhagavatā sumanāḥ śramaṇoddeśo bhikṣusaṃghasya purastāt stutaḥ praśastaś ca, tadā bhikṣūṇāṃ saṃdeho jātaḥ | kāni bhadanta sumanasā karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni, yenābhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādiko divyayā ca sumanasāṃ kañcukayā prāvṛtto jātaḥ, tīkṣnendriyaḥ, arhatvaṃ ca prāptam iti | sumanasaiva bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam anyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayāni oghavat pratyupasthitāny avaśyaṃbhāvīni | sumanasā tāni karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni | ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣv eva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyante śubhāny aśubhāni ca:

na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatair api
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām* ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvani ekanavate kalpe vipaśyī nāma samyaksaṃbuddho loka udapādi vidyācaraṇasaṃpannaḥ sugato lokavid anuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddho bhagavān* | sa bandhumatīṃ rājadhānīm upaniśritya viharati | yāvad anyatamaḥ sārtavāhaḥ | tasya taruṇāvasthāyāṃ pravrajyācittam utpannam* | tena na śakitaṃ pravrajitum* | yadā vṛddho bhūtas tadā tasya vipratisāro jātaḥ: na me śobhanaṃ kṛtaṃ yad ahaṃ bhagavacchāsane na pravrajita iti | tatas tena keśanakhanastūpe sumanaḥpuṣpāropaṇaṃ kṛtam*, vipaśyī ca samyaksaṃbuddhaḥ saśrāvakasaṃghaḥ piṇḍakena pratipāditaḥ | tataḥ tena pādayor nipatya praṇidhānaṃ kṛtam*: anenāhaṃ kuśalamūlema cittotpādena deyadharmaparityāgena ca anāgatān samyaksaṃbuddhānām ārāgayeyam* | yasya ca śāsane pravrajeyam*, tatra daharāvasthāyām āryadharmān adhigaccheyam iti | bhūyaḥ kāśyape bhagavati pravrajito babhūva | tatrānena daśa varṣasahasrāṇi brahmacaryāvāsaḥ paripālitaḥ | tenedānīm arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | iti hi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇām ekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekāntaśuklānām ekāntaśuklaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ | tasmāt tarhi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇy apāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣv eva karmasv ābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | ity evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam* ||
