83: hiraṇyapāṇiḥ

buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaḥ śrāvastyāṃ viharati jetavane ’nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme | śrāvastyām anyatamo gṛhapatir āḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogo vistīrṇaviśālaparigraho vaiśravaṇadhanasamudito vaiśravaṇadhanapratispardhī | na cāsya putro na duhitā | sa kare kapolaṃ datvā cintāparo vyavasthitaḥ: anekadhanasamuditaṃ me gṛham*, na me putro na duhitā | mamātyayāt sarvasvāpateyam aputrakam iti kṛtvā rājavidheyaṃ bhaviṣyatīti | sa śrama­ṇabrāhmaṇasuhṛt­saṃ­bandhibāndhavair ucyate: devatārādhanaṃ kuruṣveti | asti caiṣa loke pravādo yadāyācanahetoḥ putrā jāyante duhitaraś ceti | tac ca naivam* | yady evam abhaviṣyat*, ekaikasya putrasahasram abhaviṣyat tadyathā rājñaś cakravartinaḥ | api tu trayāṇāṃ sthānānāṃ saṃmukhībhāvāt putrā jāyante duhitaraś ca | katameṣāṃ trayāṇām* | mātāpitarāu raktau bhavataḥ saṃnipatitau, mātā kalyā bhavati ṛtumatī, gandharvaś ca pratyupasthito bhavati | eteṣāṃ trayāṇāṃ sthānānāṃ saṃmukhībhāvāt putrā jāyante duhitaraś ca | sa caivam āyācanaparas tiṣṭhati ||

anyatamaś ca satvo ’nyatamasmād devanikāyāc cyutvā tasya prajāpatyāḥ kukṣim avakrāntaḥ | pañcāveṇikā dharmā ekatye paṇḍitajātīye mātṛgrāme | katame pañca | raktaṃ puruṣaṃ jānāti, viraktaṃ puruṣaṃ jānāti | kālaṃ jānāti ṛtuṃ jānāti | garbham avakrāntaṃ jānāti | yasya sakāśād garbho ’vakrāmati taṃ jānāti | dārakaṃ jānāti | dārikāṃ jānāti | saced dārako bhavati dakṣiṇaṃ kukṣiṃ niśritya tiṣṭhati | saced dārikā bhavati vāmaṃ kukṣiṃ niśritya tiṣṭhati | sā āttamanāḥ svāmina ārocayati: diṣṭyā āryaputra vardhase | āpannasatvāsmi saṃvṛttā | yathā ca me dakṣiṇaṃ kukṣiṃ niśritya tiṣṭhati niyataṃ dārako bhaviṣyatīti | so ’py āttamanāḥ pūrvakāyam abhyunnamayya Speyer: atyunnamayya dakṣiṇaṃ bāhum abhiprasārya udānam udānayati: apy evāhaṃ cirakālābhilaṣitaṃ putramukhaṃ paśyeyam* | jāto me syān nāvajātaḥ | kṛtyāni me kurvīta | bhṛtaḥ pratibibhṛyāt | dāyād yaṃ pratipadyeta | kulavaṃśo me cirasthitikaḥ syāt* | asmākaṃ cāpy atītakālagatānām alpaṃ vā prabhūtaṃ vā dānāni datvā puṇyāni kṛtvā asmākaṃ nāmnā dakṣiṇām ādekṣyati: idaṃ tayor yatratatropapannayor gacchator anugacchatv iti | āpannasatvāṃ caināṃ viditvo­pariprāsādatala­gatām ayantritāṃ dhārayati, śīte śītopakaraṇair uṣṇe uṣṇopakaraṇair vaidyaprajñaptair āhārair nātitiktair nātyamlair nātilavaṇair nātimadhurair nātikaṭukair nātikaṣāyais tiktāmlalavaṇama­dhura­kaṭukakaṣāyavivarjitair āhāraiḥ | hārārdhahāravibhūṣitagātrīm apsarasam iva nandanavanavicāriṇīṃ mañcān mañcaṃ pīṭhāt pīṭham anavatarantīm adharāṃ bhūmim* | na cāsyāḥ kiṃcid amanojñaśabdaśravaṇaṃ yāvad eva garbhasya paripākāya ||

sā aṣṭānāṃ vā navānāṃ vā māsānām atyayāt prasūtā | dārako jāto ’bhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādikaḥ sarvāṅgapratyaṅgopetaḥ | pāṇidvaye cāsya lakṣaṇāhataṃ karmavipākajaṃ dīnāradvayam* | yadā tad apanītaṃ bhavati tadā anyat prādurbhavati | tasya jātau jātimahaṃ kṛtvā nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpyate: kiṃ bhavatu dārakasya nāmeti | jñātayaḥ ūcuḥ: yasmād asya jātamātrasya pāṇidvaye lakṣaṇāhataṃ karmavipākajaṃ dīnāradvayaṃ prādurbhūtam*, tasmād bhavatu dārakasya hiraṇyapāṇir iti nāmeti | hiraṇyapāṇir dārako ’ṣṭābhyo dhātrībhyo datto dvābhyām aṃsadhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ kṣīradhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ maladhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ krīḍanikābhyāṃ dhātrībhyām* | so ’ṣṭābhir dhātrībhir unnīyate vardhyate kṣīreṇa dadhnā navanītena sarpiṣā sarpimaṇḍenānyaiś cottaptottaptair upakaraṇaviśeṣaiḥ | āśu vardhate hradastham iva paṅkajam* | sa śrāddho bhadraḥ kalyāṇāśaya ātmahitaparahitapratipannaḥ kāruṇiko mahātmā dharmakāmaḥ prajāvatsalaḥ | ya yadā vīthīm avatīrṇo bhavati, tadā śrama­ṇabrāhmaṇakṛpaṇavanīpakān dṛṣṭvā pāṇidvayaṃ prasārayati | tato lakṣaṇāhatasya hiraṇyasuvarṇasya rāśiḥ prādurbhavati, yena tān saṃtarpayati | tasya yaśasā sarvā śrāvastī āpūrṇā ||

yāvad hiraṇyapāṇir dārako ’pareṇa samayena jetavanaṃ nirgataḥ | athāsau dadarśa buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ dvātriṃśatā mahāpuruṣalakṣaṇaiḥ samalaṃkṛtam aśītyā cānuvyañjanair virājitagātraṃ vyāmaprabhālaṃkṛtaṃ sūryasahasrātirekaprabhaṃ jaṅgamam iva ratnaparvataṃ samantato bhadrakam* | sahadarśanāc cānena bhagavato ’ntike citte prasāditam* | prasādajātaś ca bhagavataḥ pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā purastān niṣaṇṇo dharmaśravaṇāya | tato ’sya bhagavatā dharmo deśitaḥ | sa āyuṣmantam ānandam idam avocat*: icchāmy aham ācārya bhagavataḥ saśrāvakasaṃghasya bhaktaṃ kartum iti | sthavirānandenoktaḥ: vatsa kārṣāpaṇaiḥ prayojanam iti | tato hiraṇyapāṇinā buddhapramukhasya bhikṣusaṃghasya purastāt sthitvā pāṇidvayaṃ prasārya hiraṇyasuvarṇasya mahān rāśiḥ sthāpitaḥ, yaṃ dṛṣṭvā saṃghasthaviro ’nye ca bhikṣavaḥ sthavirānandaś ca paraṃ vismayam āpannāḥ | tato hiraṇyapāṇir dārako buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ bhojayitvā bhagavataḥ purastān niṣaṇṇo dharmaśravaṇāya | tasya bhagavatā āśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśī caturāryasatya­saṃ­prativedhikī dharmadeśanā kṛtā, yāṃ śrutvā hiraṇyapāṇidārikeṇa viṃśatiśikharasamudgataṃ satkāyadṛṣṭiśailaṃ jñānavajreṇa bhitvā srotāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | dṛṣṭasatyo jñātīnāṃ bhāgasaṃvibhāgaṃ kṛtvā śrama­ṇabrāhmaṇkṛpaṇanīpakān saṃtarpya mātāpitarāv anujñāpya bhagavacchāsane pravrajitaḥ | tena yujyamānena ghaṭamānena vyāyacchamānena idam eva pañcagaṇḍakaṃ saṃsāracakraṃ calācalaṃ viditvā sarvasaṃskāragatīḥ śata­napatanavikiraṇavidhvaṃ­sana­dharma­tayā parāhatya sarvakleśaprahāṇād arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | arhan saṃvṛttaḥ traidhātukavītarāgaḥ samaloṣṭakāñcana ākāśapāṇitalasamacitto vāsīcandanakalpo vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośo vidyābhijñāprati­saṃ­vitprāpto bhavalābhalobhasat­kāraparāṅmukhaḥ | sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ pūjyo mānyo ’bhivādyaś ca saṃvṛttaḥ ||

bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kāni bhadanta hiraṇyapāṇinā karmāṇi kṛtāni, yenāsya pāṇidvaye lakṣanāhataṃ dīnāradvayaṃ jātam*, pravrajya cārhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam iti | bhagavān āha: hiraṇyapāṇinaiva bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam anyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayāni oghavat pratyupasthitāny avaśyaṃbhāvīni | hiraṇyapāṇinā karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni | ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣv eva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyante śubhāny aśubhāni ca:

na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatair api
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām* ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvany asminn eva bhadrake kalpe viṃśativarṣasahasrāyuṣi prajāyāṃ kāśyapo nāma samyaksaṃbuddho loka udapādi vidyācaraṇasaṃpannaḥ sugato lokavid anuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddho bhagavān* | sa vārāṇasīṃ nagarīm upaniśritya viharati ṛṣipatane mṛgadāve | atha kāśyapaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhaḥ sakalaṃ buddhakāryaṃ kṛtvā indhanakṣayād ivāgnir nirupadhiśeṣe nirvāṇadhātau parinirvṛtaḥ | tasya rājñā kṛkiṇā śarīre śarīrapūjāṃ kṛtvā samantayojanaś catūratnamayaḥ stūpaḥ pratiṣṭhāpitaḥ krośam uccatvena | tatra ca stūpamahe vartamāne dyūtakareṇa dīnāradvayaṃ tasmin stūpe yaṣṭyāṃ samāropitam* | tataḥ pādayor nipatya praṇidhānaṃ kṛtavān*: yatra yatra jāyeya, tatra tatra hastagatenaiva suvarṇeneti ||

bhagavān āha: kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo ’sau tena kālena tena samayena dyūtakara āsīt*, ayaṃ sa hiraṇyapāṇiḥ | yad anena stūpe dīnāradvayaṃ samāropitam*, tenāsyaivaṃvidho viśeṣaḥ saṃvṛttaḥ | yat praṇidhānaṃ kṛtaṃ tenedānīm arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | iti hi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇām ekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekāntaśuklānām ekāntaśuklaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ | tasmāt tarhi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇy apāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣv eva karmasv ābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | ity evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam* ||
