buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ deveṣu trāyastriṃśeṣu varṣā upagataḥ pāṇḍukambalaśilāyāṃ pārijātasya kovidārasya nātidūre | mātur janitryā dharmaṃ deśayati, anyeṣāṃ ca devānām* | tena khalu samayenāyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ śrāvastyāṃ varṣā upagato jetavane ’nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme | atha catasraḥ parṣado yenāyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ tenopasaṃkrāntāḥ, mahāmaudgalyāyanapādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte niṣaṇṇāḥ | catasraḥ parṣada āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyano dharmakathayā saṃdarśayati samādāpayati samuttejayati saṃpraharṣayati | anekaparyāyeṇa dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśya samādāpya samuttejya saṃpraharṣya tūṣṇīm* | atha catasraḥ parṣada utthāyāsanād ekāṃsam uttarāsaṅgaṃ kṛtvā yenāyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ tenāñjaliṃ praṇamayya āyuṣmantaṃ mahāmaudgalyāyam idam avocat*: kaccit te bhadanta mahāmaudgalyāyana śrutaṃ kutra bhagavān etarhi varṣā upagata iti | mahāmaudgalyāyana āha: śrutaṃ me bhavanto bhagavān deveṣu trāyastriṃśeṣu varṣā upagataḥ, pāṇḍukambalaśilāyāṃ pārijātasya kovidārasya nātidūre | mātur janitryā dharmaṃ deśayati, anyeṣāṃ ca devānāṃ trāyastriṃśānām iti | atha catasraḥ parṣadaḥ āyuṣmato mahāmaudgalyāyanasya bhāṣitam abhinandyānumodya pādau śirasā vanditvotthāyāsanebhyaḥ prakrāntāḥ ||

atha catasraḥ parṣadas trayāṇāṃ vārṣikāṇām atyayād yenāyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ tenopasaṃkrāntāḥ | upasaṃkramyāyuṣmato mahāmaudgalyāyanasya pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte niṣaṇṇāḥ | catasraḥ parṣada āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyano dharmyayā kathayā saṃ­darśayati Speyer: saṃpradarśayati samādāpayati samuttejayati

athāyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyano ’ciraprakrāntāś catasraḥ parṣado viditvā tadrūpaṃ samādhiṃ samāpanno yathā samāhite citte tadyathā balavān puruṣaḥ saṃkuñcitaṃ vā bāhuṃ prasārayet*, prasāritaṃ vā saṃkuñcayet*, evam evāyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ śrāvastyām antarhito deveṣu trāyastriṃśeṣu pratyaṣṭhāt pāṇdukambalaśilāyāṃ pārijātasya kovidārasya nātidūre | tena khalu samayena bhagavān anekaśatāyā devaparṣado dharmaṃ deśayati | adrākṣīc ca mahāmaudgalyāyano bhagavantam anekaśatāyā devaparṣadaḥ purastān niṣaṇṇaṃ dharmaṃ deśayantam* | dṛṣṭvā ca punaḥ smitaṃ prāvirakārṣīt*: ihāpi bhagavān ākīrṇo viharati tadyathā jambūdvīpe catasṛbhiḥ parṣadbhir iti | atha bhagavān āyuṣmato mahāmaudgalyāyanasya cetasā cittam ājñāya āyuṣmantaṃ mahāmaudgalyāyanam idam avocat*: na khalu maudgalyāyana svairatvam eṣām*, api tu yadā me evaṃ bhavati: āgacchantv iti, tadā āgacchanti | yadā me evaṃ bhavati: gacchantv iti, tadā gacchanti | iti me cetasā cittam ājñāya āgacchanti ca gacchanti ||

āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyano yena bhagavāṃs tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ | ekāntaniṣaṇṇa āyuṣmān maudgalyāyanaḥ sarvāṃ devaparṣadam avalokya bhagavantam idam avocat: vicitrā bateyaṃ devaparṣat saṃniṣaṇṇā saṃnipatitā | santy asyāṃ devaparṣadi devatā yā buddhe ’vetya prasādena samanvāgatāḥ kāyasya bhedād ihopapannāḥ | santi dharme, santi saṃghe, santi āryakāntaiḥ śīlaiḥ samanvāgatāḥ, kāyasya bhedād ihopapannāḥ | atha bhagavān āyuṣmato mahāmaudgalyāyanasya bhāṣitam anuvarṇayann āyuṣmantaṃ mahāmaudgalyāyanam idam avocat*: evam etan maudgalyāyana, evam evam etat* | vicitrā bateyaṃ devaparṣat saṃniṣaṇṇā saṃnipatitā | santy asyāṃ devatā yā buddhe ’vetya prasādena samanvāgatāḥ, kāyasya bhedād ihopapannāḥ | santi dharme, santi saṃghe, santi āryakāntaiḥ śīlaiḥ samanvāgatāḥ, kāyasya bhedād ihopapannāḥ ||

atha śakro śakro devānām indro bhagavata āyuṣmataś ca mahāmaudgalyāyanasya bhāṣitam anuvarṇayann āyuṣmantaṃ mahāmaudgalyāyanam idam avocat*: evam etad bhadanta mahāmaudgalyāyana, evam etat* | vicitrā bateyaṃ devaparṣat saṃniṣaṇṇā saṃnipatitā | santy asyāṃ devaparṣadi devatāḥ, yā buddhe ’vetya prasādena samanvāgatāḥ, kāyasya bhedād ihopapannāḥ | santi dharme, santi saṃghe, santy āryakāntaiḥ śīlaiḥ samanvāgatāḥ, kāyasya bhedād ihopapannāḥ ||

athānyatamo devaputro bhagavata āyuṣmataś ca mahāmaudgalyāyanasya śakrasya ca devānām indrasya bhāṣitam anuvarṇayann āyuṣmantaṃ mahāmaudgalyāyanam idam avocat*: evam etad bhadanta mahāmaudgalyāyana, evam etat* | vicitrā bateyaṃ devaparṣat saṃniṣaṇṇā saṃnipatitā | santy asyāṃ devaparṣadi devatāḥ, yā buddhe ’vetya prasādena samanvāgatāḥ kāyasya bhedād ihopapannāḥ | santi dharme, santi saṃghe | santi āryakāntaiḥ śīlaiḥ samanvāgatāḥ kāyasya bhedād ihopapannā iti ||

tatrānekāni devatāśatāni anekāni devatāsahasrāṇy anekāni devatāśatasahasrāṇi bhagavataḥ purastāt pratyekaṃ pratyekaṃ srotāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtya tatraivāntarhitāni ||

athāyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ praviviktāṃ devaparṣadaṃ viditvā ekāṃsam uttarāsaṅgaṃ kṛtvā yena bhagavāṃs tenāñjaliṃ praṇamayya bhagavantam idam avocat*: jambūdvīpe bhadanta catasraḥ parṣado bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vandante alpābādhatāṃ ca pṛcchanti, alpātaṅkatāṃ ca laghūtthānatāṃ ca yātrāṃ ca balaṃ ca sukhaṃ cānavadyatāṃ ca sparśavihāratāṃ ca | bhagavān āh: sukhino maudgalyāyana bhavantu jambūdvīpe catasraḥ parṣadas tvaṃ ca | mahāmaudgalyāyana āha: jambūdvīpe bhadanta catasraḥ parṣada ākāṅkṣanti bhagavato darśanam* | evaṃ cāhuḥ: nāsti bhadanta jāmbūdvīpakānāṃ manuṣyāṇāṃ tadrūpā ṛddhir vā anubhāvo vā yena jāmbūdvīpakā manuṣyā devāṃs trāyastriṃśān abhiroheyur bhagavantaṃ darśanāyopasaṃkramituṃ paryupāsanāya | asti tu bhadanta devānāṃ trāyastriṃśānāṃ tadrūpā ṛddhiś cānubhāvaś ca, yena devās trāyastriṃśā jambūdvīpam avatareyur bhagavantaṃ darśanāyopasaṃkramituṃ paryupāsanāya | sādhu bhagavān devebhyaś trāyastriṃśebhyo ’vatared anukampām upādāya | bhagavān āha: tena hi tvaṃ gaccha maudgalyāyana jambūdvīpam* | gatvā ca catasṛṇāṃ parṣadām ārocaya: avatariṣyati bhavanto bhagavān itaḥ saptame divase devebhyas trāyastriṃśebhyo jambūdvīpaṃ sāṃkāśye nagare āpajjure dāve udumbaramūle iti ||

athāyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyano bhagavataḥ pratiśrutya pādau śirasā vanditvā tadrūpaṃ samādhiṃ saṃpanno yathā samāhite citte tadyathā balavān puruṣaḥ saṃkuñcitaṃ bāhuṃ prasārayet*, prasāritaṃ vā saṃkuñcayet*, evam evāyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyano deveṣu trāyastriṃśeṣv antarhitaḥ, jambūdvīpe pratyaṣṭhāt* | athāyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyano jambūdvīpam āgatya catasṛṇāṃ parṣadām ārocayati: avatariṣyati bhavanto bhagavān itaḥ saptame divase devebhyas trāyastriṃśebhyo jambūdvīpaṃ sāṃkāśye nagare āpajjure dāve udumbaramūle iti ||

avatīrṇo bhagavāṃs tataḥ saptame divase devebhyas trāyastriṃśebhyaḥ sāṃkāśye nagare āpajjure dāve udumbaramūle | yadā bhagavān sāmkāśyaṃ nagaram avatīrṇaḥ, tadā anekāni prāṇiśatasahasrāṇi bhagavato darśanāya saṃnipatitāni | tatropapāduko bhikṣuḥ prādurbhūtaḥ | tena bhagavān saśrāvakasaṃghas te ca devāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragā bhaktenopanimantritāḥ | yāvad gaṇḍīdeśanākāle sahacittotpādād divyāny āsanāny udārapaṭācchāditāni prādurbhūtāni, divyāni ca bhakṣyabhojyāni | tata upapādukena bhagavān divyenāhāreṇa saṃtarpitaḥ | te ca devāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragāḥ samyag upasthitāḥ | tato ’sya bhagavatā āśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśī dharmadeśanā kṛtā, yāṃ śrutvopapādukena bhikṣuṇā idam eva pañcagaṇḍakaṃ saṃsāracakraṃ calācalaṃ viditvā sarvasaṃskāragatīḥ śata­napatanavikiraṇavidhvaṃ­sana­dharma­tayā parāhatya sarvakleśaprahāṇād arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | arhan saṃvṛttaḥ traidhātukavītarāgaḥ samaloṣṭakāñcana ākāśapāṇitalasamacitto vāsīcandanakalpo vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośo vidyābhijñāprati­saṃ­vitprāpto bhavalābhalobhasat­kāraparāṅmukhaḥ | sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ pūjyo mānyo ’bhivādyaś ca saṃvṛttaḥ ||

bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kāni bhadanta upapādukena karmāṇi kṛtāni, yenopapādukaḥ saṃvṛttaḥ? sahacittotpādāc cāsya yac cintayati, tat prārthayate, tat sarvaṃ saṃṛdhyatīti | bhagavān āha: upapādukenaiva bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam anyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayāni oghavat pratyupasthitāny avaśyaṃbhāvīni | upapādukenaiva karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni | ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣv eva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyante śubhāny aśubhāni ca:

na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatair api
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām* ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvany ekanavate kalpe vipaśyī nāma samyaksaṃbuddho loka udapādi tathāgato ’rhan samyaksaṃbuddho vidyācaraṇasaṃpannaḥ sugato lokavid anuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddho bhagavān* | sa bandhumatīṃ rājadhānīm upaniśritya viharati | yāvad anyatarasmin grāmake ’raṇyāyatane pañca bhikṣavo varṣā upagatāḥ tatraikena bhikṣuṇā caturṇāṃ bhikṣūṇāṃ vaiyāvṛtyaṃ kṛtam* | tair yujyamānair ghaṭamānair vyāyacchamānaiḥ sarvakleśaprahāṇād arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | pañcamena pādayor nipatya praṇidhānaṃ kṛtam*: yathaibhir mām āgamya arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam*, anena me kuśalamūlena cittotpādena deyadharmaparityāgena ca pravrajitasya upakaraṇaviśeṣair avaikalyaṃ syād iti ||

kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavaḥ yo ’sau tena kālena tena samayena vaiyāvṛtyaṃ kṛtavān*, ayaṃ sa upapāduka iti | bhikṣava ūcuḥ: kiṃ karma kṛtaṃ yenopapādukaḥ saṃvṛttaḥ? bhagavān āha: bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvany asminn eva bhadrake kalpe viṃ­śativarṣa­sahas­rāyuṣi Speyer: viṃśatisahasrāyuṣi prajāyāṃ kāśyapo nāma samyaksaṃbuddho loka udapādi tathāgato ’rhan samyaksaṃbuddho vidyācaraṇasaṃpannaḥ sugato lokavid anuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddho bhagavān* | sa vārāṇasīṃ nagarīm upaniśritya viharati ṛṣipatane mṛgadāve | tatrānyataraḥ śreṣṭhī | tasya bhāryā prasavakāle duḥkhavedanābhibhūtā ārtasvarā kradanti | sa taṃ śabdaṃ śrutvā paraṃ saṃvegam āpannaḥ | sa śokāgāraṃ praviśya kare kapolaṃ datvā cintāparo vyavasthitaḥ | tasya buddhir utpannā: yanv ahaṃ bhagavacchāsane pravrajya praṇidhānaṃ kuryām*, yena na kadācid garbhaśayyāṃ pratyanubhavāmīti | sa tenaiva saṃvegena bhagavataḥ kāśyapasya pravacane pravrajitaḥ | tena praṇidhānaṃ kṛtam*: anenāhaṃ kuśalamūlena cittotpādena deyadharmaparityāgena ca yatra yatra jāyeya, tatra tatropapāduko bhaveyam*, mā kadācid garbhaśayyāṃ pratyanubhaveyam iti ||
