89: bhadrikaḥ

buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaḥ śrāvastyāṃ viharati jetavane ’nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme ||

yadā bhagavān ṣaḍvarṣābhisaṃbuddho dvādaśavarṣanirgataḥ kapilavastu anuprāptaḥ, tadā droṇodanāmṛtodanapramukhair anekaiḥ śākyasahasraiḥ satyadarśanaṃ kṛtaṃ sthāpayitvā rājānaṃ śuddhodanam* | tato rājā śuddhodanas tāṃ putraśobhāṃ dṛṣṭvā paraṃ vismayam āpannaḥ | tasya buddhir utpannā: yadi me putro na pravrajito ’bhaviṣyat*, so ’yam abhaviṣyad rājā cakravartī caturantavijetā dhārmiko dharmarājaḥ | sa etarhi jaṭilapravrajitaparivāro na śobhate | yanv ahaṃ śākyakulebhya ekaikaṃ pravrājayeyam iti | tato rājñā śuddhodanena nagare ghaṇṭāvaghoṣaṇaṃ kāritam*: sarvaśākyaiḥ saṃnipattavyam iti | tataḥ sarvaśākyeṣu saṃnipatiteṣu rājā śuddhodanaḥ kathayati: śṛṇvantu bhavantaḥ śākyāḥ | yadi sarvārthasiddhaḥ kumāro na pravrajito ’bhaviṣyat*, yad yuṣmābhir evopasthānaṃ kṛtam abhaviṣyat* | tad idānīm asya pravrajitasya ekaikena kulapuruṣeṇa śākyenopasthāyakena pravrajitavyam iti | tato bhadrikāniruddharevata­deva­dattaprabhṛtīni pacca kumāraśatāni pravrajitāni | teṣām upālir nāma kalpaka upasthāyakaḥ tān pravrajitān dṛṣṭvā roditum ārabdhaḥ | tataḥ śākyaiḥ pṛṣṭaḥ: kimartham upāle rudyata iti | sa karuṇadīnavilambitair akṣarair uvāca: yūyaṃ pravrajitāḥ | ko mamedānīṃ bhahtācchādanena paripālanaṃ kariṣyatīti | tataḥ śākyā ūcuḥ: tena hi upāle, paṭakaṃ prasārayeti | tena paṭakaḥ prasāritaḥ | tataḥ śākyaiḥ śarīrāvalagnānāṃ hārārdhahā­rama­ṇimukhtāvaiḍūryakeyūrāṅgulīyakānāṃ mahān rāśiḥ kṛtaḥ | tata upāleḥ kalpakasya tān dṛṣṭvā vicitraṃ cālaṃkāram abhivīkṣya yoniśo manasikāra utpannaḥ: ime tāvac chākyāḥ kularūpayuvanavanto ’ntaḥpurāṇi imaṃ cālaṃkāraṃ kheṭavad utsṛjya pravrajitāḥ | kim utāham alpavibhavaḥ imam alaṃkāraṃ gṛhaṃ neṣyāmi? alam anena | yanv aham etān anupravrajeyam iti | athopāliḥ kalpako yena bhagavāṃs tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ, upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādayor nipatya bhagavantam idam avocat*: yadi bhagavan mādṛśānāṃ pravrajyā asti, labheyāhaṃ svākhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajyām upasaṃpadaṃ bhikṣubhāvam*, careyam aham bhagavato ’ntike brahmacaryam iti | tato bhagavatā ehibhikṣukayā pravrājitaḥ ||

tato bhadrikapramukhāni pañca śākyaśatāni bhikṣu­nepathyadhārīṇi Speyer: bhikṣuveṣadhārīṇi buddhapramukhasya bhikṣusaṃghasya praṇāmaṃ kartúṃ pravṛttāni | te upāliṃ jñātvā kularūpavibhavānvitatvān necchanty upāleḥ praṇāmaṃ kartum* | tatra bhagavān āyuṣmantaṃ bhadrikam āmantrayate: bhadrika kartavyo ’sya praṇāmaḥ, yasmād idaṃ māmakaṃ śāsanaṃ na kularūpayauvanaiśvaryacāturvarṇyaviśuddhim apekṣata iti | tato mūlanikṛttā iva drumā bhadrikapramukhāni pañca śākyaśatāni dharmatām avalambya pādayor nipatitāni | teṣām pādavandanasamakālam eveyaṃ mahāpṛthivī ṣaḍvikāraṃ prakampitā |

tatrāyuṣmatā bhadrikeṇa yujyamānena ghaṭamānena vyāyacchamānena idam eva pañcagaṇḍakaṃ saṃsāracakraṃ calācalaṃ viditvā sarvasaṃskāragatīḥ śata­napatanavikiraṇavidhvaṃ­sana­dharma­tayā parāhatya sarvakleśaprahāṇād arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | arhan saṃvṛttaḥ traidhātukavītarāgaḥ samaloṣṭakāñcana ākāśapāṇitalasamacitto vāsīcandanakalpo vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośo vidyābhijñāprati­saṃ­vitprāpto bhavalābhalobhasat­kāraparāṅmukhaḥ | sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ pūjyo mānyo ’bhivādyaś ca saṃvṛttaḥ | sa ca mahātmā hīnadīnānukampī | so ’pareṇa samayena pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaram ādāya śrāvastīṃ gocarāya prasthitaḥ | yāvad anyataracaṇḍālakaṭhinaṃ piṇḍāya praviṣṭaḥ | tena khalu samayena rājā prasenajit kauśala ekapuṇḍarīkaṃ hastināgam abhiruhya dīrgheṇa cārāyaṇena sārathinā bhagavato darśanāya saṃprasthitaḥ | dadarśa rājā prasenajit kauśalo bhadrikaṃ śāntendriyaṃ śāntamānasam*, parameṇa ca citta­damavyupaśamanasamanvāgataṃ pāṃsukūlaprāvṛtaṃ lūhaṃ piṇḍapātaṃ gṛhītvā tasmāc caṇḍālakaṭhinān nirgacchantam* | dṛṣṭvā ca punar dīrghaṃ cārāyaṇaṃ sārathim āmantrayate: syād ayaṃ cārāyaṇa bhadriko bhikṣuḥ? evaṃ yathā vadasi | iti śrutvā rājā prasenajit kauśalaḥ saṃmoham āpannaḥ, pṛthivyāṃ mūrcchitaḥ patitaḥ | tato jala­pariṣ­ekapratyāgataprāṇacetaso labdhamānasaś cārāyaṇena sārathinotthāpitaḥ ||

tato rājā bhagavatsakāśam upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā bhagavantam uvāca: bhagavan, adbhutaṃ me dṛṣṭam* | asau bhadrikaḥ śākyarājaḥ pāṃsukūlaprāvṛto lūhaṃ piṇḍapātaṃ gṛhītvā deva­manuṣyāvarjanakareṇātipraśānteneryāpathena piṇḍapātam ādāya caṇḍālakaṭhinān nirgataḥ | tasya mamaitad abhavat*: āścarya yāvat suvinītaṃ bhagavacchāsanam*, yatra nāma evaṃvidhāḥ kumārāḥ sukhaidhitā evaṃvinītapracārāḥ saṃvṛttā iti | bhagavān āha: aparam api mahārāja bhadrikasyāścaryaṃ śṛṇu | ayaṃ mahārāja bhadriko ’raṇyagato vā vṛkṣamūlagato vā śūnyāgāragato vā trir udānayati: aho bata saukhyam* | yad aham apravrajitaḥ san rājakulamadhyagato ’mātyanaigamajāna­pada­su­saṃ­rakṣitaḥ prākāra­pari­khādvārastūpābhinigūḍhaḥ pariśaṅkitahṛdayaḥ saṃvignaḥ samantataḥśaṅkī nidrāṃ nāsādayāmi | so ’ham etarhi nirapekṣaḥ kāye jīvite ca sukhaṃ yatratatrastho viharāmīti ||

bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kāni bhadanta bhadrikeṇa pūrvam anyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni, yenābhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādika āḍhye rājakule pratyājātaḥ | pravrajya cārhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam iti | bhagavān āha: bhadrikeṇaiva bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam anyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayāni oghavat pratyupasthitāny avaśyaṃbhāvīni | bhadrikeṇa karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni | ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣv eva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyante śubhāny aśubhāni ca:

na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi api kalpaśatair api
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām* ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvani vārāṇasyāṃ nagaryām anyatamaḥ koṭṭamallakaḥ kṣutkṣāmaparigataśarīraḥ itaś cāmutaś cānvāhiṇḍate | yāvad anyatarā dārikā pūpalikā ādāya gacchati | tatas tena koṭṭamallakena sā dārikā pūpalikānām arthe abhibhūtā | tato balād ekām pūpalikām ādāya itas tataḥ Speyer: tatas tataḥ palāyitum ārabdhaḥ | sā cāsya dārikā pṛṣṭhataḥ samanubaddhaiva | tato ’sau koṭṭamallakaḥ sahasā nadīcārikām uttīrṇaḥ | asati buddhānām utpāde pratyekabuddhā loka utpadyante hīnadīnānukampakāḥ prāntaśayanāsanabhaktā ekadakṣiṇīyā lokasya | tadā anyataraḥ pratyekabuddhas tasya koṭṭamallakasyāgrataḥ sthitaḥ | tataḥ koṭṭamallasya taṃ pratyekabuddhaṃ śānteryāpathaṃ dṛṣṭvā mahān prasādo jātaḥ | tena svaṃ vyasanam agaṇayya pratyekabuddhāya pūpalikā pratipāditā | tasya vipraharṣasaṃjananārthaṃ vitatapakṣa iva haṃsarājo gaganatalam abhyudgamya vicitrāṇi prātihāryāṇi vidarśayitum ārabdhaḥ | tataḥ koṭṭamallakas tad atyadbhutaṃ devamanuṣyāvarjanakaraṃ prātihāryaṃ dṛṣṭvā mūlanikṛttā iva drumaḥ pādayor nipatya praṇidhānaṃ kartum ārabdhaḥ: yan me siddhavrato dakṣiṇīyaḥ pūpalikayā pratipāditaḥ, anenāhaṃ kuśalamūlena cittotpādena deyadharmaparityāgena ca yatra yatra jāyeya, tatra tatroccakulīnaḥ syām*, evaṃvidhānāṃ ca dharmāṇāṃ lābhī syām*, prativiśiṣṭataraṃ cātaḥ śāstāram ārāgayeyaṃ mā virāgayeyam iti ||

bhagavān āha: kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo ’sau tena kālena tena samayena koṭṭamallakaḥ, ayam asau bhadrikaḥ | yat tena pratyekabuddhaḥ pūlikayā pratipāditaḥ, tasya karmaṇo vipākenāḍhye śākye pratyāgataḥ | bhūyaḥ kāśyape bhagavati pravrajito babhūva | tatrānena daśa varṣasahasrāṇi brahmacaryāvāsaḥ pratipālitaḥ | tenedānīm ārhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | iti hi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇām ekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekāntaśuklānām ekāntaśuklaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ | tasmāt tarhi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇy apāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣv eva karmasv ābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | ity evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam* ||

idam avocad bhagavān* | āttamanasas te bhikṣavo bhagavato bhāṣitam abhyanandan* ||
