93: hastakaḥ

buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaḥ śrāvastyāṃ viharati jetavane ’nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme | śrāvastyām anyatamaḥ śreṣṭhī āḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogo vistīrṇaviśālaparigraho vaiśravaṇadhanasamudito vaiśravaṇadhanapratispardhī | tena sadṛśāt kulāt kalatram ānītam* | sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ patnī āpannasatvā saṃvṛttā | sā aṣṭānāṃ vā navānāṃ vā māsānām atyayāt prasūtā | dārako jāto ’bhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādikaḥ sarvāṅgapratyaṅgopetaḥ prakṛtijātismaraś ca | sa svakaṃ hastaṃ gṛhītvā āliṅgate cumbati pariṣvajati, vācaṃ bhāṣate: aho bata me hastakau sucireṇa labdhau, aho bata me hastakau sucireṇa labdhakāv iti | tasya jātau jātimahaṃ kṛtvā nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpyate: kiṃ bhavatu dārakasya nāmeti | jñātaya ūcuḥ: yasmād ayaṃ jātamātra eva hastāv āliṅgate cumbati, tasmād bhavatu dārakasya hastaka iti nāmeti | hastako dāraka aṣṭābhyo dhātrībhyo datto dvābhyām aṃsadhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ kṣīradhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ maladhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ krīḍanikābhyāṃ dhātrībhyām* | so ’ṣṭābhir dhātrībhir unnīyate vardhyate kṣīreṇa dadhnā navanītena sarpiṣā sarpimaṇḍenānyaiś cottaptottaptair upakaraṇaviśeṣaiḥ | āśu vardhate hradastham iva paṅkajam* | yadā tatra deśe kiṃcid bhavati bhayam*, tadā sa janakāyo bhīta itaś cāmutaś codbhrānto bhāṇḍaṃ gopāyati | sa tu hastau gopāyati, janakāyasya caivaṃ kathayati: mā bhavanto dakṣiṇīyeṣu cittaṃ pradūṣayata, mā paruṣāṃ vācaṃ bhāṣayadhvam*, aho bata me hastakau sucireṇa labdhakau, aho bata me hastakau sucireṇa labdhakāv iti ||

yāvad apareṇa samayena hastako jetavanaṃ gataḥ | athāsau dadarśa buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ dvātriṃśatā mahāpuruṣalakṣaṇaiḥ samalaṃkṛtam aśītyā cānuvyañjanair virājitagātraṃ vyāmaprabhālaṃkṛtaṃ sūryasahasrātirekaprabhaṃ jaṅgamam iva ratnaparvataṃ samantato bhadrakam* | sahadarśanāc cānena bhagavato ’ntike cittaṃ prasāditam* | sa prasādajāto bhagavataḥ pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā purastān niṣaṇṇo dharmaśravaṇāya | tato ’sya bhagavatā āśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśī caturāryasatya­saṃ­prativedhikī dharmadeśanā kṛtā, yāṃ śrutvā hastakena viṃśatiśikharasamudgataṃ satkāyadṛṣṭiśailaṃ jñānavajreṇa bhitvā srotāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | sa dṛṣṭasatyo mātāpitarāv anujñāpya bhagavacchāsane pravrajitaḥ | tena yujyamānena ghaṭamānena vyāyacchamānena idam eva pañcagaṇḍakaṃ saṃsāracakraṃ calācalaṃ viditvā sarvasaṃskāragatīḥ śata­napatanavikiraṇavidhvaṃ­sana­dharma­tayā parāhatya sarvakleśaprahāṇād arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | arhan saṃvṛttaḥ traidhātukavītarāgaḥ samaloṣṭakāñcana ākāśapāṇitalasamacitto vāsīcandanakalpo vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośo vidyābhijñāprati­saṃ­vitprāpto bhavalābhalobhasat­kāraparāṅmukhaḥ | sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ pūjyo mānyo ’bhivādyaś ca saṃvṛttaḥ | so ’rhatvaprāpto ’py evam eva bhikṣūṇāṃ dharmaṃ deśayati: mā bhavanto dakṣiṇīyeṣu cittaṃ pradūṣayata, mā kharāṃ vācaṃ niścārayata | aho bata me hastakau sucireṇa labdhakau, aho bata me hastakau sucireṇa labdhakāv iti ||

bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kāni bhadanta hastakena karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni yenārhatvaprāpto ’py evam eva kathayati: aho bata me hastakau sucireṇa labdhakau, aho bata me hastakau sucireṇa labdhakāv iti | bhagavān āha: pratyakṣakarmaphaladarśī bhikṣavo ’yaṃ pudgalaḥ | icchatha yūyam avadhārayitum*? evaṃ bhadanta | hastakenaiva bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam anyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayāni oghavat pratyupasthitāny avaśyaṃbhāvīni | hastakena karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni | ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣv eva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyante śubhāny aśubhāni ca:

na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatair api
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām* ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvany asminn eva bhadrake kalpe viṃśatisahasrāyuṣi prajāyāṃ kāśyapo nāma samyaksaṃbuddho loka udapādi vidyācaraṇasaṃpannaḥ sugato lokavid anuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddho bhagavān* | sa vārāṇasīṃ nagarīm upaniśritya viharati ṛṣipatane mṛgadāve | yāvat tatra dvau bhikṣū saṃśīlikau | tatraiko bahuśruto ’rhan*, dvitīyo ’lpaśrutaḥ pṛthagjanaś ca | tatra yo ’sāv arhan* bahuśrutaḥ, sa jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ bahūni ca nimantraṇakāni pratilabhate | sa taṃ saṃśīlikabhikṣuṃ yatra nimantrito bhavati, tatra paścācchramaṇaṃ nayati | yāvad anyatamasmin divase ’rhan nimantritaḥ | nimantraṇakaṃ gantukāmas taṃ paścācchramaṇam āgacchati, na ca pratilabhate | tatas tena tasyādarśanād anyo bhikṣur nītaḥ | yāvat tatra taruṇabhikṣubhir auddhatyābhiprāyair evam uktam*: paśyata bhadantā yāvat tenāyaṃ paścācchramaṇo ’dya na nīto ’nyo nīta iti | tatas tena krodhābhibhūtenārhato ’ntike cittaṃ pradūṣya kharaṃ vākkarma niścāritam* | + + + + + + + + + + + + + + tena pañca janmaśatāny ahasto jātaḥ | yadā āśayato vipratisārajātena atyayam atyayato deśitaṃ vivṛtam uttānīkṛtam*, tena hastau pratilabdhau | yat punas tena paṭhitaṃ svādhyāyitaṃ skandhakauśalaṃ dhātukauśalam āyatanakauśalaṃ pratītyasamutpādakauśalaṃ ca kṛtam*, tena mama śāsane pravrajya sarvakleśaprahāṇād arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | iti hi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇām ekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekāntaśuklānām ekāntaśuklaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ | tasmāt tarhi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇy apāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣv eva karmasv ābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | ity evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam* ||
