95: saṃsāraḥ

buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaḥ śrāvastyāṃ viharati jetavane ’nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme | śrāvastyām anyatamo gṛhapatir āḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogo vistīrṇaviśālaparigraho vaiśravaṇadhanasamudito vaiśravaṇadhanapratispardhī | tena sadṛśāt kulāt kalatram ānītam* | sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ patnī āpannasatvā saṃvṛttā | sā aṣṭānāṃ vā navānāṃ vā māsānām atyayāt prasūtā | dārako jāto ’bhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādikaḥ sarvāṅgapratyaṅgopetaḥ | sa jātamātra eva gṛham avalokya vācaṃ niścārayati sma: duḥkho bhavantaḥ saṃsāraḥ, paramaduḥkhaḥ saṃsāraḥ | ity uktvā tūṣṇīm avasthitaḥ | tasya jātau jātimahaṃ kṛtvā nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpyate: kiṃ bhavatu dārakasya nāmeti | jñātaya ūcuḥ: yasmād ayaṃ jātamātra eva saṃsāra iti ghoṣayati, tasmād bhavatu dārakasya saṃsāra iti nāmeti | saṃsāro dārako ’ṣṭābhyo dhātrībhyo datto dvābhyām aṃsadhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ kṣīradhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ maladhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ krīḍanikābhyāṃ dhātrībhyām* | so ’ṣṭābhir dhātrībhir unnīyate vardhyate kṣīreṇa dadhnā navanītena sarpiṣā sarpimaṇḍenānyaiś cottaptottaptair upakaraṇaviśeṣaiḥ | āśu vardhate hradastham iva paṅkajam* |

yadā saṃsāro dārakaḥ krameṇa mahān saṃvṛttaḥ, sa prakṛtijātismaratvāc ca janakāyasya dharmaṃ deśayati: mā bhavanto guruṣu gurusthānīyeṣu mātāpitṛṣv ācāryopādhyāyeṣu vā kharavācaṃ niścārayata | duḥkhaṃ saṃsāra iti | yāvad apareṇa samayena itaś cāmutaś ca paribhramañ jetavanaṃ nirgataḥ | athāsau dadarśa buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ dvātriṃśatā mahāpuruṣalakṣaṇaiḥ samalaṃkṛtam aśītyā cānuvyañjanair virājitagātraṃ vyāmaprabhālaṃkṛtaṃ sūryasahasrātirekaprabhaṃ jaṅgamam iva ratnaparvataṃ samantato bhadrakam* | sahadarśanāc cānena bhagavato ’ntike cittaṃ prasāditam* | prasādajāto bhagavataḥ pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā purastān niṣaṇṇo dharmaśravaṇāya | tasmai bhagavatā saṃsāravairāgyikī dharmadeśanā kṛtā, yāṃ śrutvā saṃsāro dārakaḥ saṃsāre doṣadarśī bhūtvā mātāpitarāv anujñāpya bhagavacchāsane pravrajitaḥ | tena yujyamānena ghaṭamānena vyāyacchamānena idam eva pañcagaṇḍakaṃ saṃsāracakraṃ calācalaṃ viditvā sarvasaṃskāragatīḥ śata­napatanavikiraṇavidhvaṃ­sana­dharma­tayā parāhatya sarvakleśaprahāṇād arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | arhan saṃvṛttaḥ traidhātukavītarāgaḥ samaloṣṭakāñcana ākāśapāṇitalasamacitto vāsīcandanakalpo vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośo vidyābhijñāprati­saṃ­vitprāpto bhavalābhalobhasat­kāraparāṅmukhaḥ | sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ pūjyo mānyo ’bhivādyaś ca saṃvṛttaḥ | so ’rhatvaprāpto ’pi bhikṣūṇāṃ dharmaṃ deśayati: mā āyuṣmanto guruṣu gurusthānīyeṣu mātāpitṛṣv ācāryopādhyāyeṣu kharavācaṃ niścārayata | duḥkhaṃ saṃsāraḥ, paramaduḥkhaṃ saṃsāra iti | + + + + + + + + + + + + + + ||

bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kāni bhadanta saṃsāreṇa karmāṇi kṛtāni, yena pañca janmaśatāni mṛtakuṇapa eva mātuḥ kukṣer nirgataḥ | pravrajya cārhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam iti | bhagavān āha: saṃsāreṇaiva bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam anyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayāni oghavat pratyupasthitāny avaśyaṃbhāvīni | saṃsāreṇa karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni | ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣv eva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyante śubhāny aśubhāni ca:

na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatair api
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām* ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvany asminn eva bhadrake kalpe viṃśativarṣasahasrāyuṣi prajāyāṃ kāśyapo nāma samyaksaṃbuddho loka udapādi vidyācaraṇasaṃpannaḥ sugato lokavid anuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddho bhagavān* | sa vārāṇasīṃ nagarīm upaniśritya viharati ṛṣipatane mṛgadāve | vārāṇasyāṃ nagaryām anyatamaḥ śreṣṭhīputraḥ sthavirasakāśe pravrajitaḥ | sa ca sthaviro ’rhan, sa rāgaviprahīṇaḥ | yāvat tatra deśe parva samupasthitam* | tatas taruṇabhikṣuṇā sthavira utthāpyate: uttiṣṭha gocaragrāmaṃ gamiṣyāva iti | sthavira āha: vatsa adyāpi prātar eva, gaccha tāvat kuśalapakṣaṃ pratijāgṛhīti | dvir api trir api taruṇabhikṣuṇā sthavira utthāpyate: uttiṣṭha gocaragrāmaṃ gamiṣyāva iti | dvir api trir api sthavira āha: vatsa adyāpi prātar eva, gaccha tāvat kuśalapakṣaṃ pratijāgṛhīti | tatas tena taruṇabhikṣuṇā rasagṛdhreṇa kharaṃ vākkarma niścāritam: mā tvaṃ pañcabhir api janmaśatair jīvaḥ kośān nirgaccha, eṣo ’haṃ nirgata iti ||

bhagavān āha: kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo ’sau tena kālena tena samayena taruṇabhikṣuḥ, ayam saṃsāraḥ | yad anenārhato ’ntike cittaṃ pradūṣya kharaṃ vākkarma niścāritam*, tasya karmaṇo vipākena pañca janmaśatāni mṛtakuṇapa eva mātuḥ kukṣer nirgataḥ | nirgateṣu pañcasu janmaśateṣu idānīm anena manuṣyatvam āsāditam* | tatas tat smṛtvā kathayati: duḥkhaṃ saṃsāraḥ, paramaduḥkhaṃ saṃsāra iti | yad anena vipratisārajātena sthavirasyātyayo deśitaḥ, brahmacaryavāsaś ca paripālitaḥ, tenedānīm arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | iti hi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇām ekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekāntaśuklānām ekāntaśuklaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ | tasmāt tarhi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇy apāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣv eva karmasv ābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | ity evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam* ||
