97: virūpaḥ

buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaḥ śrāvastyāṃ viharati jetavane ’nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme | + + + anyatamo gṛhapatir āḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogo vistīrṇaviśālaparigraho vaiśravaṇadhanasamudito vaiśravaṇadhanapratispardhī | tena sadṛśāt kulāt kalatram ānītam* | sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ patnī āpannasatvā saṃvṛttā | sā aṣṭānāṃ vā navānāṃ vā māsānām atyayāt prasūtā | dārako jātaḥ | jātamātrasya sarvaśarīraṃ vikṛtisphuṭaṃ pravṛttam* | durvarṇo durdarśano ’ṣṭādaśabhir doṣavarṇakaiḥ samanvāgataḥ sa dārako bhūtaḥ | tasya mātāpitarau sarvāṅgaṃ durvarṇaṃ durdarśanaṃ vikṛtarūpaṃ dṛṣṭvā cintāparau vyvasthitau | tasya jātau jātimahaṃ kṛtvā nāmadheyaṃ vyvasthāpyate: kiṃ nāma bhavatu dārakasya? jñātaya ūcuḥ: yasmād ayaṃ jātamātra evaṃ vikṛtarūpaḥ, tasmād bhavatu dārakasya virūpa iti nāma ||

ydā mahān saṃvṛttas tadā tasya lajjayā mahān saṃkoco jātaḥ | kutrānyatra gamiṣyāmi, kva tiṣṭhāmi, iti vicārya sujīrṇodyānaṃ jagāma | atha bhagavān mahāśrāvakaparivṛtaḥ sujīrṇodyānaṃ gataḥ | sa bhagavantaṃ dṛṣṭvā jehrīyamāṇa itaś cāmutaś ca palāyitum ārabdhaḥ | tato bhagavatā ṛddhyā tathādhiṣṭhito yan na śaknoti palāyitum* | tato bhagavān saha śrāvakair nirodhasamāpattiṃ samāpannaḥ | tato nirodhād vyutthāya virūpam ātmānaṃ nirmitavān* | nirmāya śarāvaṃ bhojanapūrṇam ādāya virūpam āgataṃ dṛṣṭvā harṣajāta āmantritavān*: ehi sahāyaka, kuta āgamiṣyate, tiṣṭha, ubhāv api sahitau vatsyāva iti | tato ’sya bhagavatā bhojanaṃ dattam* | prīṇītendriyaś ca saṃvṛttaḥ | tato bhagavatā ātmā svaveṣeṇa sthāpitaḥ | tato virūpo buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ dṛṣṭvā kathayati: abhirūpataras tvam idānīṃ saṃvṛttaḥ | kasya karmaṇaḥ prabhāvād iti | bhagavān āha: vidyā me asti cittaprasādajananī nāmnā, tasyā eṣa prabhāva iti | tatas tena bhagavato ’ntike cittaṃ prasāditam*, teṣāṃ ca mahāśrāvakāṇām ālayasamāpannānām* | tato ’sya lakṣmīḥ prādurbhūtā | pravrajya cārhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam iti ||

bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kāni bhadanta virūpeṇa karmāṇi kṛtāni, yenaiva durvarṇo durdarśano ’ṣṭādaśabhir daurvarṇikadoṣaiḥ samanvāgataḥ | pravrajya cārhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam iti | bhagavān āha: virūpeṇaiva bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam anyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayāni oghavat pratyupasthitāny avaśyaṃbhāvīni | virūpeṇaiva karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni | ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣv eva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyante śubhāny aśubhāni ca:

na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatair api
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām* ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvani puṣyo nāma samyaksaṃbuddho loka udapādi vidyācaraṇasaṃpannaḥ sugato lokavid anuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddho bhagavān* | so ’pareṇa samayenānyatamāṃ rājadhānīm upaniśritya viharati | atha puṣyaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhaḥ samanvāhartuṃ pravṛttaḥ | paśyati tasmin kāle dvau bodhisatvau saṃnikṛṣṭau: bhagavāñ chākyamunir maitreyaś ca | maitreyasya svasaṃtatiḥ paripakvā, śāstur vaineyā aparipakvāḥ | śākyamunes tu svasaṃtatir aparipakvā, vaineyāḥ paripakvāḥ | atha puṣyaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhaḥ śākyamuner bodhisatvasya saṃtatiparipācanārthaṃ himavantaṃ parvatam abhiruhya ratnaguhāṃ praviśa paryaṅkaṃ baddhvā tejodhātuṃ samāpannaḥ | tasmiṃś ca kāle śākyamunir bodhisatvaḥ phalamūlānām arthe himavantaṃ parvatam abhirūḍhaḥ | sa itas tataś cañcūryamāṇo dadarśa puṣyaṃ samyaksaṃbuddhaṃ dvātriṃṣatā mahāpuruṣalakṣaṇaiḥ samalaṃkṛtam aśītyā cānuvyañjanair virājitagātraṃ vyāmaprabhālaṃkṛtaṃ sūryasahasrātirekaprabhaṃ jaṅgamam iva ratnaparvataṃ samantato bhadrakam* | sahadarśanāc cānena tathāvidhaṃ cittasamādhānaṃ samāsāditam*, yad ekapādena sapta rātriṃdivāni ekayā gāthayā stutavān*:

na divi bhuvi vā nāsmiṃl loke na vaiśravaṇālaye

na marubhavane divye sthāne na dikṣu vidikṣu vā
caratu vasudhāṃ sphītāṃ kṛtsnāṃ saparvatakānanāṃ

puruṣavṛṣabhāsty anyas tulyo mahāśramaṇas tava ||

atha puṣyaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhaḥ paripakvasaṃtatiṃ śākyamuniṃ bodhisatvaṃ dṛṣṭvā sādhukāram adāt*: sādhu sādhu satpuruṣa |

anena balavīryeṇa saṃpannena dvijottama
nava kalpāḥ parāvṛttāḥ saṃstutyādya tathāgatam* ||

tato bhagavān maheśākhyābhir devatābhiḥ parivṛtaḥ tasyāṃ guhāyāṃ sthitaḥ | tatra guhānivāsinī devatā alpeśākhyatvān na śaknoti tāṃ guhāṃ samabhiroḍhum* | tato vikṛtanayanā bhūtvā bhagavantaṃ bhīṣayate | yadā suciram api bhīṣayamāṇā na śaknoti bhagavato ’pakāraṃ kartum*, tadā tayā prasādo labdhaḥ: śobhano ’yam ṛṣiḥ siddhavrataś ceti | tataḥ sā udāraṃ rūpam abhinirmāya bhagavataḥ pādayor nipatya kṣamāpayitvā piṇḍakena pratipāditavatī ||

bhagavān āha: kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo ’sau tena kālena tena samayena guhānivāsinī devatā babhūva, ayam virūpaḥ saḥ | tasya karmaṇo vipākena saṃsāre ’nantaṃ duḥkham anubhūtavān* | idānīm api tenaiva hetunā virūpaḥ saṃvṛttaḥ | yad anena paścāc cittaṃ prasāditam*, tenāsya apagatā alakṣmīḥ prādurbhūtā | pravrajya cārhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | iti hi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇām ekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekāntaśuklānām ekāntaśuklaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ | tasmāt tarhi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇy apāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣv eva karmasv ābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | ity evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam* ||

idam avocad bhagavān* | āttamanasas te bhikṣavo bhagavato bhāṣitam abhyanandan* ||
