buddho bhagavān satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrair dhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhair devair nāgair yakṣair asurair garuḍaiḥ kinnarair mahoragair iti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃgho rājagṛham upaniśritya viharati veṇuvane kalandakanivāpe | tena khalu samayena nāladagrāmake tiṣyo nāma brāhmaṇaḥ | tena śārī nāma dārikā māṭharasakāśāl labdhā | yadā śāriputraḥ sārīkukṣim avakrāntaḥ, tadā bhrātrā saha dīrghanakhena vivādaṃ kurvantī nigrahasthānaṃ prāpayati | + + + + + + | tato dīrghanakhena dakṣiṇāpathaṃ gatvā bahūni śāstrāṇy adhītāni |

yāvat krameṇa śāriputro jātaḥ | tena dvir aṣṭavarṣeṇaindraṃ vyākaraṇam adhītam*, sarvavādinaś ca nigṛhītāḥ | so ’nupūrveṇa bhagavataḥ śāsane pravrajitaḥ | yāvad dīrghanakhena pravrājakena śrutam*: bhāgineyena te sarve tīrthakarā nigṛhītāḥ | idānīṃ śramaṇagautamasya śiṣyatvam abhyupagata iti |
śrutvā cāsya mahatī paribhavasaṃjñā utpannā, sarvaśāstreṣu cāsya anaiṣṭhikasaṃjñā utpannā | tataḥ kramaśo rājagṛham anuprāptaḥ ||

ayaṃ khalv agnivaiśyāyana kāyo rūpī audārikaś cāturmahābhūtika iti āryaśrāvakeṇa abhīkṣṇam udayavyayānudarśinā vihartavyam*, virāgānudarśinā pratinisargānudarśinā vihartavyam* | yatrāryaśrāvakasya abhīkṣṇam udayavyayānudarśino viharataḥ, yo ’sya bhavati kāye kāyacchandaḥ kāyasnehaḥ kāyapremā kāyālayaḥ kāyaviṣaktiḥ kāyādhyavasānam*, tac cāsya cittaṃ na paryādāya tiṣṭhati ||

tisra imā agnivaiśyāyana vedanāḥ | katamās tisraḥ? sukhā duḥkhā aduḥkhāsukhā ca | yasmin samaye śrutavān āryaśrāvakaḥ sukhāṃ vedanāṃ vedayate, dve asya vedane tasmin samaye niruddhe bhavataḥ: duḥkhā ca aduḥkhāsukhā ca | sukhām eva ca tasmin samaye āryaśrāvako vedanāṃ vedayate | sukhāpi ca vedanā anityā nirodhadharmiṇī | yasmin samaye āryaśrāvako duḥkhāṃ vedanāṃ vedayate, dve asya vedane tasmin samaye niruddhe bhavataḥ, sukhā aduḥkhāsukhā ca | duḥkhām eva ca tasmin samaye āryaśrāvako vedanāṃ vedayate | duḥkhāpi vedanā anityā nirodhadharmiṇī | yasmin samaye āryaśrāvako aduḥkhāsukhāṃ vedanāṃ vedayate, dve asya vedane tasmin samaye niruddhe bhavataḥ, sukhā duḥkhā ca | aduḥkhāsukhām eva ca tasmin samaye āryaśrāvako vedanāṃ vedayate | aduḥkhāsukhāpi vedanā anityā nirodhadharmiṇī | tasyaivaṃ bhavati: imā vedanāḥ kiṃnidānāḥ kiṃsamudayāḥ kiṃjātīyāḥ kiṃprabhāvā iti? imā vedanā sparśanidānāḥ sparśasamudayāḥ sparśajātīyāḥ sparśaprabhāvāḥ | tasya sparśasya samudayāt tās tā vedanāḥ samudayante tasya sparśasya nirodhāt tās tā vedanā nirudhyante, vyupaśāmyanti śītībhavanti astaṃgacchanti | sa yāṃ kāṃcid vedanāṃ vedayate sukhāṃ vā duḥkhāṃ vā aduḥkhāsukhā vā, tāsāṃ vedanānāṃ samudayaṃ cāstaṃgamaṃ cāsvādaṃ cādīnavaṃ ca niḥsaraṇaṃ ca yathābhūtaṃ prajānāmīti, tasya vedanānāṃ samudayaṃ cāstaṃgamaṃ cāsvādaṃ cādīnavaṃ ca niḥsaraṇaṃ ca yathābhūtaṃ prajānata utpannāsu vedanāsv anityatānudarśī viharati, vyayānudarśī virāgānudarśī nirodhānudarśī pratisargānudarśī | sa kāyaparyantikāṃ vedanāṃ vedayamānaḥ kāyaparyantikāṃ vedanāṃ vedaya iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti | jīvitaparyantikāṃ vedanāṃ vedayamāno jīvitaparyantikāṃ vedanāṃ vedaya iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti | bhedāc ca kāyasyorddhvaṃ jīvitaparyādānād ihaivāsya sarvāṇi vedanāni apariśeṣaṃ nirudhyante apariśeṣam astaṃ parikṣayaṃ paryādānaṃ gacchanti | tasyaivaṃ bhavati: sukhām api vedanāṃ vedayato bhedaḥ kāyasya bhaviṣyati | eṣa evānto duḥkhasya | duḥkhām api, aduḥkhāsukhām api vedanāṃ vedayato bhedaḥ kāyasya bhaviṣyati | eṣa evānto duḥkhasya | sa sukhām api vedanāṃ vedayate, visaṃyukto vedayate, na saṃyuktaḥ | duḥkhām api aduḥkhāsukhām api vedanāṃ vedayate, visaṃyukto vedayate, na saṃyuktaḥ | kena visaṃyuktaḥ? visaṃyukto rāgeṇa dveṣeṇa mohena, visaṃyukto jāti­jarā­maraṇa­śoka­pari­deva­duḥkha­daurmanasyopāyāsaiḥ, visaṃyukto duḥkhād iti vadāmi ||

tena khalu samayena āyuṣmāñ śāriputro ’rdhamāsopasaṃpanno bhagavataḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ sthito ’bhūd vyajanaṃ gṛhītvā bhagavantaṃ vījayan* | āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasyaitad abhavat*: bhagavāṃs teṣāṃ dharmāṇāṃ prahāṇam eva varṇayati, virāgam eva nirodham eva pratiniḥsargam eva varṇayati | yanv ahaṃ teṣāṃ teṣāṃ dharmāṇāṃ prahāṇānudarśī vihareyam*, virāgānudarśī nirodhānudarśī vihareyam*, pratiniḥsargānudarśī vihareyam iti | āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasyaiṣāṃ dharmāṇām anityatānudarśino viharato vyayānudarśino virāgānudarśino nirodhānudarśinaḥ pratiniḥsargānudarśino viharataḥ anupādāya āsravebhyaś cittaṃ vimuktam* | dīrghanakhasya ca parivrājakasya virajo vigatamalaṃ dharmeṣu dharmacakṣur utpannam* ||

atha dīrghanakhaḥ parivrājako dṛṣṭadharmā prāptadharmā paryavagāḍhadharmā tīrṇakāṅkṣas tīrṇavicikitso ’parapratyayo ’nanyaneyaḥ śāstuḥ śāsane Speyer: śāstraśasane dharmeṣu vaiśāradyaprāpta utthāyāsanād ekāṃsam uttarāsaṅgaṃ kṛtvā yena bhagavāṃs tenāñjaliṃ praṇamayya bhagavantam idam avocat | lābheyāhaṃ bhadanta svākhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajyām upasaṃpadaṃ bhikṣubhāvam* | careyam ahaṃ bhagavato ’ntike brahmacaryam* | labdhavān dīrghanakhaparivrājakaḥ svākhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajyām upasaṃpadaṃ bhikṣubhāvam* | evaṃ pravrajitaḥ sa āyuṣmān eko vyapakṛṣṭo ’pramatta ātāpī prahitātmā vyahārṣīt* | eko vyapakṛṣṭo ’pramatta ātāpī prahitātmā viharan* yad arthaṃ kulaputrāḥ keśaśmaśru avatārya kāṣāyāṇi vastrāṇy ācchādya samyag eva śraddhayā agārād anagārikāṃ pravrajanti, tad anuttaraṃ brahmacaryaparyavasānaṃ dṛṣṭa eva dharme svayam abhijñayā sākṣātkṛtvā pratipadya pravedayate: kṣīṇā me jātiḥ, uṣitaṃ brahmacaryaṃ, kṛtaṃ karaṇīyaṃ nāparam asmād bhavaṃ prajānāmīti | ājñātavān sa āyuṣmān arhan babhūva suvimuktacittaḥ | tatra bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayate sma: eṣo ’gro me bhikṣavo bhikṣūṇāṃ mama śrāvakāṇāṃ pratisaṃvitprāptānāṃ yaduta koṣṭhilo bhikṣur iti ||

bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kāni bhadanta mahākoṣṭhilena karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni, yena mahāvādī saṃvṛttaḥ | pravrajya cārhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam iti | bhagavān āha: koṣṭhilenaiva bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam anyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayāni oghavat pratyupasthitāny avaśyaṃbhāvīni | koṣṭhilena karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni | ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣv eva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyante śubhāny aśubhāni ca:

na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatair api
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām* ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvani vārāṇasyāṃ nagaryāṃ pañcamātrāṇi taskaraśatāni senāpatipramukhāṇi cauryeṇa saṃprasthitāni | yāvat te cañcūryamāṇā anyatamaṃ khadiravaṇam anuprāptāḥ | yāvat senāpatinābhihitāḥ: paśyata yūyaṃ kamalāyatākṣaḥ kaścid aparakīyo manuṣyaḥ saṃvidyate, yena vayaṃ yakṣabaliṃ datvā prakrāmemeti | tatra ca khadiravane pratyekabuddhaḥ prativasati | tatas tais taskaraiḥ paryaṭadbhir dṛṣṭvā senāpatisakāśaṃ nītaḥ | tataś caurasenāpatinā vadhyatām ayam ity ājñā dattā | tato ’sau pratyekabuddhas teṣām anugrahārthaṃ vitatapakṣa iva haṃsarājaḥ khagapatham abhyudgamya vicitrāṇi prātihāryāṇi vidarśayitum ārabdhaḥ | tataḥ senāpatir mūlanikṛtta iva drumaḥ pādayor nipatya atyayaṃ deśitavān* | piṇḍakena pratipādya praṇidhānaṃ kṛtavān*: aham apy evaṃvidhānāṃ guṇānāṃ lābhī syām*, prativiśiṣṭataraṃ cātaḥ śāstāram ārāgayeyaṃ mā virāgayeyam iti ||

bhagavān āha: kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo ’sau tena kālena tena samayena caurasenāpatiḥ, ayam evāsau koṣṭhilaḥ | bhūyaḥ kāśyape bhagavati pravrajito babhūva | tatrānena daśa varṣasahasrāṇi brahmacaryavāsaḥ paripālitaḥ | tenedānīm arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam* | iti hi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇām ekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekāntaśuklānām ekāntaśuklaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ | tasmāt tarhi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇy apāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣv eva karmasv ābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | ity evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam* ||

idam avocad bhagavān* | āttamanasas te bhikṣavo bhagavato bhāṣitam abhyanandan* ||
