10. meṇḍhakāvadānam

bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuh—kiṃ bhadanta meṇḍhakena meṇḍhakapatnyā meṇḍhakaputreṇa meṇḍhakasnuṣayā meṇḍhakadāsena meṇḍhakadāsyā karma kṛtam yena ṣaḍabhijñātā mahāpuṇyāḥ saṃvṛttāḥ, bhagavato ’ntike satyāni dṛṣṭāni, bhagavāṃścaibhirārāgito na virāgita iti? bhagavānāha—ebhireva bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni labdhasambhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayāni oghavatpratyupasthitānyavaśyambhāvīni |
ebhiḥ karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni |
ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣveva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyante śubhānyaśubhāni ca |
na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatairapi |
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām (1)|
bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvani vārāṇasyāṃ nagaryāṃ brahmadatto nāma rājā rājyaṃ kārayati ṛddhaṃ ca sphītaṃ ca kṣemaṃ ca subhikṣaṃ ca ākīrṇabahujanamanuṣyaṃ ca praśānta­kalikalahaḍimbaḍa­mara­taskarogāpagataṃ śālīkṣugomahiṣīsampannamakhilamakaṇṭakam |
ekaputramiva rājyaṃ pālayati |
tena khalu samayena vārāṇasyāṃ naimittikairdvādaśavarṣikā anāvṛṣṭirvyākṛtā |
trividhaṃ durbhikṣaṃ bhaviṣyati—cañcu śvetāsthi śalākāvṛtti ca |
tatra cañcu ucyate—samudgake tasmin manuṣyā bījāni prakṣipya anāgate sattvāpekṣayā sathāpayanti |
mṛtā nāma anena te bījakāyaṃ kariṣyantīti |
idaṃ samudgakaṃ baddhvā cañcu ucyate |
śvetāsthi nāma durbhikṣam—tasmin kāle manuṣyā asthīnyupasaṃhṛtya tāvat kvāthayanti, yāvat tānyasthīni śvetāni saṃvṛttānīti |
tatastatkvāthaṃ pibanti |
idaṃ śvetāsthi durbhikṣamityucayate |
śalākāvṛttir nāma—tasmin kāle manuṣyāḥ khalu bilebhyo dhānyaguḍakāni śalākayā ākṛṣya bahudakasthālyāṃ kvāthayitvā pibanti |
iyaṃ śalākāsambaddhatvācchalākāvṛttirityucyate |
tato rājñā brahmadattena vārāṇasyāṃ ghaṇṭāvaghoṣaṇaṃ kāritam—śṛṇvantu bhavanto vārāṇasīnivāsinaḥ paurāḥ |
naimittikairdvādaśavarṣikā anāvṛṣṭirvyākṛtā śalākāvṛtti durbhikṣaṃ cañcu śvetāsthi ca |
yeṣāṃ vo dvādaśavarṣikaṃ bhaktamasti, taiḥ sthātavyam |
yeṣāṃ nāsti, te yatheṣṭaṃ gacchantu |
vigatadurbhikṣabhayāḥ subhikṣe punarapyupāgamiṣyanti |
tasminśca samaye vārāṇasyāmanyatamo gṛhapatirāḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogo vistīrṇaparivāraḥ |
tena koṣṭhāgārika āhūya uktah—bhoḥ puruṣa, bhaviṣyati me saparivārāṇāṃ me saparivārāṇāṃ dvādaśa varṣāṇi bhaktamiti? sa kathayati—ārya bhaviṣyatīti |
sa tatraivāvasthitaḥ |
samantarānubaddhaṃ caitat dubhikṣam |
tasya kośakoṣṭhāgārāḥ parikṣīṇāḥ |
sarvaśca parijanaḥ kālagataḥ |
ātmanā ṣaṣṭho vyavasthitaḥ |
tatastena gṛhapatinā kośakoṣṭhāgarāṇi śodhayitvā dhānyaprastha upasaṃhṛtaḥ |
so ’sya patnyā sthālyāṃ prakṣipya sādhitaḥ |
asati buddhānāmutpāde pratyekabuddhā loka utpadyante hīnadīnānukampakāḥ prāntaśayanabhaktā ekadakṣiṇīyā lokasya |
yāvadanyatamaḥ pratyekabuddho jana­pada­cārikāṃ caran vārāṇasīmanuprāptaḥ |

sa pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaramādāya vārāṇasīṃ piṇḍāya praviṣṭaḥ |
sa ca gṛhapatirātmanā ṣaṣṭho ’vasthito bhoktum |
sa ca pratyekabuddho ’nupūrveṇa piṇḍapātamaṭaṃs tasya gṛhapatir niveśanamanuprāptaḥ |
sa tena gṛhapatinā dṛṣṭaścittaprāsādikaḥ kāyaprāsādikaśca |
dṛṣṭvā ca punaḥ saṃlakṣayati—etadapyahaṃ parityajya niyataṃ prāṇairviyokṣye |
yannvahaṃ svapratyaṃśamasmai pravrajitāya dadyāmiti |
tena bhāryā abhihitā—bhadre, yo mama pratyaṃśastamahamasmai pravrajitāyānuprayacchāmīti |
sa saṃlakṣayati—mama svāmī na paribhuṅkte, kathamahaṃ paribhokṣya iti |
sā kathayati—āryaputra, ahamapi pratyaṃśamasmai prayacchāmi |
evaṃ putreṇa snuṣayā dāsena dāsyā ca vicārya svasvapratyaṃśāḥ parityaktāḥ |
tatastaiḥ sarvaiḥ saṃbhūya pratyekabuddhaḥ piṇḍakena pratipāditaḥ |
kāyikī teṣāṃ mahātmanāṃ dharmadeśanā, na vācikī |
sa vitatapakṣa iva haṃsarāja upari vihāyasamudgamya jvalanata­pana­varṣaṇavidyotanaprātihāryāṇi kartumārabdhaḥ |
āśu pṛthagjanāvarjanakarī ṛddhiḥ |
te mūlanikṛttā iva drumāḥ pādayor nipatya praṇidhānaṃ kartumārabdhāḥ |
gṛhapatiḥ praṇidhānaṃ kartumārabdhah—yanmayā evaṃvidhe sadbhūtadakṣiṇīye kāraḥ kṛtaḥ, anenāhaṃ kuśalamūlena yadi riktakāni kośakoṣṭhāgārāṇi sahadarśanānme pūrṇāni syuh—evaṃvidhānāṃ ca dharmāṇāṃ lābhī syām, prativiśiṣṭataraṃ cātaḥ śāstāramārāgayeyaṃ mā virāgayeyamiti |
patnī praṇidhānaṃ kartumārabdhā—yanmayā evaṃvidhe sadbhūtadakṣiṇīye kāraḥ kṛtaḥ, anenāhaṃ kuśalamūlena yadyekasyārthāya sthālīṃ paceyam, sā śatenāpi paribhujyeta, sahasreṇāpi, na parikṣayaṃ gacchet, yāvanmayā prayogo ’pratipraśrabdhaḥ, ityevaṃvidhānāṃ ca dharmāṇāṃ lābhinī syām, prativiśiṣṭataraṃ cātaḥ śāstāramārāgayeyaṃ mā virāgayeyamiti |
putraḥ praṇidhānaṃ kartumārabdhah—yanmayā evaṃvidhe sadbhūtadakṣiṇīye kāraḥ kṛtaḥ, anenāhaṃ kuśalamūlena pañcaśatiko nakulakaḥ kaṭyāmu­pari­baddhastiṣṭhet, yadi ca śataṃ vā sahasraṃ vā tato vyayaṃ kuryāt, pūrṇa eva tiṣṭhet, mā parikṣayaṃ gacchet—evaṃvidhānāṃ ca dharmāṇāṃ lābhī syām, prativiśiṣṭataraṃ cātaḥ śāstāramārāgayeyaṃ mā virāagayeyamiti |
snuṣā praṇidhānaṃ kartumārabdhā—yanmayā evaṃvidhe sadbhūtadakṣiṇīye kāraḥ kṛtaḥ, anenāhaṃ kuśalamūlena yadyekasya gandham yojayeyam, śataṃ vā gandhaṃ ghrāsyati, taṃ na ca parikṣayaṃ gaccheyuryāvanmayā apratipraśrabdham—evaṃ­vidhānāṃ dharmāṇāṃ labhinī syām, prativiśiṣṭataraṃ cātaḥ śāstāramārāgayeyaṃ mā virāgayeyamiti |
dāsaḥ praṇidhānaṃ kartumārabdhah—yanmayā evaṃvidhe sadbhūtadakṣiṇīye kāraḥ kṛtaḥ, anenāhaṃ kuśalamūlena yadyekahalasīraṃ kṛṣeyam, sapta sīrāḥ kṛṣṭāḥ syuh—evaṃvidhānāṃ dharmāṇāṃ ca lābhī syām, prativiśiṣṭataraṃ cātaḥ śāstāramārāgayeyaṃ mā virāgayeyamiti |
dāsī praṇidhānaṃ kartumārabdhā—evaṃvidhe sadbhūtadakṣiṇīye kāraḥ kṛtaḥ, anenāhaṃ kuśalamūlena yadyekāṃ mātramārabheyam, sapta mātrāḥ saṃpadyeran—evaṃvidhānāṃ dharmāṇāṃ ca labhinī syām, prativiśiṣṭataraṃ cātaḥ śāstāramārāgayeyaṃ mā virāgayeyamiti |
taiścaivaṃ praṇidhānaṃ kṛtam |
sa ca mahātmā praty­eka­buddhas­teṣāmanukampayā ṛddhyā upari vihāyasā rājakulasyopariṣṭāt saṃprasthitaḥ |

tena khalu samayena rājā brahmadatta upariprāsādatalagatastiṣṭhati |
tasya ṛddhyā gacchato rājño brahmadattasyopari cchāyā nipatitā |
sa ūrdhvamukho nirīkṣitumārabdhaḥ |
paśyati taṃ pratyekabuddham |
tasyaitadabhavat—kasyāpyanena mahātmanā ṛddhi­mahā­lāṅgalairdāridrya­mūlān­yutpāṭitāni |
balavatī āśā |
tato ’sau gṛhapatiḥ kośakoṣṭhāgārāṇi pratyavekṣitumārabdho yāvatpūrṇāni paśyati |
sa patnīmāmantrayate—mama tāvat praṇidhānaṃ pūrṇam, yuṣmākamapīdānīṃ paśyāma iti |
tato dāsyā dhānyānāmekāṃ mātrāmārabdhā parikarmayitum, sapta mātrāḥ saṃpannāḥ |
prātiveśyairanekaiśca prāṇiśatasahasraiḥ paribhuktam, tathaivāvasthitā |
tathaiva putrasya snuṣāyā dāsasya praṇidhiḥ siddhā |
tato gṛhapatinā ghaṇṭāvaghoṣaṇaṃ kāritaṃ vārāṇasyām—yo bhavanto ’nnenārthī, sa āgacchatu iti |
vārāṇasyāmuccaśabdho mahāśabdho jātaḥ |
rājñā śrutam |
kathayati—kimeṣa bhavanta uccaśabdo mahāśabda iti? amātyaiḥ samākhyātam—deva, amukena gṛhapatinā kośakoṣṭhāgārāṇi uddhāṭitānīti |
rājā tamāhūya kathayati—yadā eva lokaḥ kālagataḥ, tadā tvayā kośakoṣṭhāgārāṇyuddhāṭitānīti |
deva, kasya kośakoṣṭhāgārāṇyuddhāṭitāni? api tu adyaiva me bījamuptamadyaiva phaladāyakamiti |
rājā pṛcchati—yathā katham? sa etat prakaraṇaṃ vistareṇārocayati |
rājā kathayati—gṛhapate, tvayā asau mahātmā piṇḍakena pratipāditah? deva mayaiva pratipāditaḥ |
so ’bhiprasanno gāthāṃ bhāṣate— aho guṇamayaṃ kṣetraṃ sarvadoṣavivarjitam |
yatroptaṃ bījamadyaiva adyaiva phaladāyakam (2)|
iti |
kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo ’sau gṛhapatirgṛhapatipatnī gṛhapatiputro gṛhapatisnuṣā gṛhapatidāso gṛhapatidāsī, ayameva meṇḍhako gṛḥpatir meṇḍhakapatnī meṇḍhakaputro meṇḍhakasnuṣā meṇḍhakadāso meṇḍhakadāsī ca |
yadebhiḥ pratyekabuddhe kārān kṛtvā praṇidhānaṃ kṛtam, tasya karmaṇo vipākena ṣaḍ mahāpuṇyā jātāḥ, mamāntike dṛṣṭasatyāni |
ahaṃ caibhiḥ praty­eka­buddha­koṭi­śata­sahas­rebhyaḥ prativiśiṣṭaḥ śāstā ārāgito na virāgitaḥ |
iti hi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇāmekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekāntaśuklānāṃ karmaṇāmekāntaśuklaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ |
tasmāttarhi evaṃ śikṣitavyam, yadekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇyapāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣveva karmasvābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ |
ityevaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam |
