sa bhagavān rājagṛhe viharati veṇuvane kalandakanivāpe satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrairdhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhairdevair nāgairyakṣairasurairgaruḍaiḥ kinnarairmahoragairiti deva­nāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragābhyarcito buddho bagavāñ jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṃgho divyānāṃ mānuṣyāṇāṃ ca bhagavānanupalipto viharati padmapatramivāmbhasā |

tena khalu samayena rājagṛhe nagare ṣaṭ pūrṇādyāḥ śāstāro ’sarvajñāḥ sarvajñamāninaḥ prativasanti sma |
tadyathā—pūrṇaḥ kāśyapaḥ, maskarī gośālīputraḥ, saṃjayī vairaṭṭīputraḥ, ajitaḥ keśakambalaḥ, kakudaḥ kātyāyanaḥ, nirgraṅgho jñātiputraḥ |
atha ṣaṇṇāṃ pūrṇādīnāṃ tīrthyānāṃ bhavanto jānīran—yadā śramaṇo gautamo loke ’nutpannaḥ, tadā vayaṃ satkṛtāścābhūvan gurukṛtāśca mānitāśca pūjitāśca rājñāṃ rājamātrāṇāṃ brāhmaṇānāṃ gṛhapatīnāṃ naigamānāṃ jānapadānāṃ śreṣṭhināṃ sārthavāhānām |
lābhīnaścā­bhūvaṃ­ścīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇām |
yadā tu śramaṇo gautamo loke utpannaḥ, tadā śramaṇo gautamaḥ satkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājñāṃ rājamātrāṇāṃ brāhmaṇānāṃ gṛhapatīnāṃ janapadānāṃ dhanināṃ śreṣṭhināṃ sārthavāhānām |
lābhī ca śramaṇo gautamaḥ saśrāvaka­saṃ­ghaścīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇām |
asmākaṃ ca lābhasatkāraḥ sarveṇa sarvam asmucchinnaḥ |
vayaṃ sma ṛddhimanto jñānavādinaḥ |
śramaṇo ’pi gautamo riddhimāñ jñāvādītyātmānaṃ pratijānīte |
arhati jñāvādī jñānavādinā sārdhamuttare manuṣyadharme riddhiprātihāryaṃ vidarśayitum |
yadyekaṃ śramaṇo gautamo ’nuttare manuṣyadharme riddhiprātihāryaṃ vidarśayiṣyati, vayaṃ dve |
dve śramaṇo gautamaḥ, vayaṃ catvāri |
catvāri śramaṇo gautamaḥ, vayamaṣṭau |
aṣṭau śramaṇo gautamaḥ, vayaṃ ṣoḍaśa |
ṣoḍaśa śramaṇo gautamaḥ, vayaṃ dvātriṃśaditi yāvacchramaṇo gautama uttare manuṣyadharme riddhiprātihāryaṃ vidarśayiṣyati, vayaṃ taddviguṇaṃ tattriguṇaṃ vidarśayiṣyāmaḥ |
upārdhaṃ mārgaṃ śramaṇo gautama āgacchatu, vayamapyupārdhaṃ mārgaṃ gamiṣyāmaḥ |
tatrāsmākaṃ bhavatu śramaṇena gautamena sārdhamuttare manuṣyadharme riddhiprātihāryam |
atha mārasya pāpīyasa etadabhavat—asakṛdasakṛnmayā śramaṇasya gautamasya prākrāntam, na ca kadācidavatāro labdhaḥ |
yannvahaṃ tīrthyānāṃ prahareyam |
iti viditvā pūraṇavadāt­māna­mabhinirmāya upari vihāyasamabhyudgamya jvalanata­pana­varṣaṇavidyotanaprātihāryāṇi kṛtvā maskariṇaṃ gośālīputramā­mantra­yate—yat­khalu maskariñ jānīyāh—ahaṃ riddhimāñ jñānavādī, śramaṇo gautamo riddhimāñ jñānavādītyātmānaṃ parijānīte |
arhati jñānavādī jñānavādinā sārdhamuttare manuṣyadharme riddhiprātihāryaṃ vidarśayitum |
yadyekaṃ śramaṇo gautama uttare manuṣyadharme riddhiprātihāryaṃ vidarśayiṣyati, ahaṃ dve |
dve śramaṇo gautamaḥ, ahaṃ catvāri |
catvāri śramaṇo gautamaḥ, ahamaṣṭau |
aṣṭau śramaṇo gautamaḥ, ahaṃ ṣoḍaśa |

pūraṇādyāḥ ṣaṭ śāstāraḥ sarvajñajñānino yena rājā māgadhaḥ śreṇyo bimbisārastenopasaṃkrāman |
upasaṃkramya rājānaṃ māgadhaṃ śreṇyaṃ bimbisāramidamavocan—yat­khalu deva jānīyāh—vayam ṛddhimanto jñānavādinaḥ |
śramaṇo ’pi gautamo riddhimāñ jñānavādītyātmānaṃ pratijānīte |
arhati jñānavādī jñānavādinā sārdhamuttare manuṣyadharme riddhiprātihāryaṃ vidarśayitum |

śramaṇo ’pi gautamo riddhimāñ jñānavādītyātmānaṃ pratijānīte |
arhati jñānavādī jñānavādinā sārdhamuttare manuṣyadharme riddhiprātihāryaṃ vidarśayitum |
yāvat tatrāsmākaṃ bhavatu śramaṇena gautamena sārdhamuttare manuṣyadharme riddhiprātihāryaṃ vidarśayitum |
evamuttare rājā māgadhaḥ śreṇyo bimbisārastāṃ­stīrthika­pariv­rāja­kānidamavocat—yadyevaṃ trirapyetamarthaṃ vijñāpayiṣyatha, nirviṣayān vaḥ kariṣyāmi |
atha tīrthyānāmetadabhavat—ayaṃ rājā māgadhaḥ śreṇyo bimbisāraḥ śramaṇasya gautamasya śrāvakaḥ |
bimbisārastiṣṭhatu |
rājā prasenajit kauśalo madhyasthaḥ |
yadā śramaṇo gautamaḥ śrāvastīṃ gamiṣyati, tatra vayaṃ gatvā śramaṇaṃ gautamamuttare manuṣyadharme riddhiprātihārye āhṇayiṣyāmaḥ |
ityuktvā prakrāntāḥ |

atha rājā māgadhaḥ śreṇyo bimbisāro ’nyatamaṃ puruṣamāmantrayate—gaccha tvaṃ bhoḥ puruṣa kṣipram |
bhadram yānam yojaya, yatrāhamadhiruhya bhagavantaṃ darśanāyopasaṃkramiṣyāmi paryupāsanāyai |
evaṃ deveti sa puruṣo rājño māgadhasya śreṇyasya bimbisārasya pratiśrutya kṣipraṃ bhadram yānam yojayitvā yena rājā māgadhaḥ śreṇyo bimbisārastenopa­saṃk­rāntaḥ |
upasaṃkramya rājānaṃ māgadhaṃ śreṇyaṃ bimbisāramidamavocat—yuktaṃ devasya bhadram yānam yasyedānīṃ devaḥ kālaṃ manyata iti |
atha rājā māgadhaḥ śreṇyo bimbisāro bhadram yānamabhiruhya rājagṛhānniryāti bhagavato ’ntikaṃ bhagavantaṃ darśanāyopasaṃkramituṃ paryupāasnāya |
tasya yāvatī yānasya bhūmistāvadyānena gatvā yānādavatīrya padbhyāmevārāmaṃ prāvikṣat |
antarā rājā māgadhaḥ śreṇyo bimbisāro bhagavantamadrākṣīt |
tadantarā pañca kakudānyapanīya tadyathā—uṣṇīṣaṃ chatraṃ khaḍgamaṇiṃ vālavyajanaṃ citre copānahau, sa pañca kakudānyapanīya yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ |
upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ |
ekāntaniṣaṇṇaṃ viditvā rājānaṃ māgadhaṃ śreṇyaṃ bimbisāraṃ bhagavān dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśayati samādāpayati samuttejayati saṃpraharṣayati |
anekaparyāyeṇa dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśya samādāpya samuttejya saṃpraharṣya tūṣṇīm |
atha rājā māgadha śreṇyo bimbisāro bhagavantamabh­yāna­ndyānumodya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā bhagavato ’ntikāt prakrāntaḥ |

atha bhagavata etadabhavat—kutra pūrvakaiḥ samyaksam­buddha­ir­mahāprātihāryaṃ vidarśitaṃ hitāya prāṇinām? devatā bhagavata ārocayanti—śrutapūrvaṃ bhadanta pūrvakaiḥ samyaksam­buddha­ir­mahāprātihāryaṃ vidarśitaṃ hitāya prāṇināmiti |
bhagavato jñānadarśanaṃ pravartate—śrāvastyāṃ pūrvakaiḥ samyaksam­buddha­ir­mahāprātihāryaṃ vidarśitaṃ hitāya prāṇināmiti |
tatra bhagavānāyuṣmanta­māna­ndamā­mantra­yate—gaccha tvamānanda, bhikṣūṇāmārocaya |
tathāgataḥ kośaleṣu janapadeṣu cārikāṃ cariṣyati |
yo yuṣmākamutsahate tathāgatena sārdhaṃ kośaleṣu janapadeṣu cārikāṃ cartum, sa cīvarakāṇi dhāvatu sīvyatu rañjayatu |
evaṃ bhadantetyāyuṣmānānando bhagavataḥ pratiśrutya bhikṣūṇāmārocayati—bhagavānāyuṣmantaḥ kośaleṣu janapadeṣu cārikāṃ cariṣyati |
yo yuṣmākamutsahate tathāgatena sārdhaṃ kośaleṣu janapadeṣu cārikāṃ caritum, sa cīvarāṇi dhāvatu sīvyatu rañjayatu iti |
te bhikṣava āyuṣmata ānandasya pratyaśrauṣuḥ |
atha bhagavān dānto dāntaparivāraḥ śāntaḥ śāntaparivāro mukto muktaparivāra āśvasta āśvastaparivāro vinīto vinītaparivāro ’rhannarhatparivāro vītarāgo vītarāgaparivāraḥ prāsādikaḥ prāsādikaparivāro vṛṣabha iva gogaṇaparivṛto gaja iva kalabhagaṇaparivṛtaḥ siṃha iva daṃṣṭṭagaṇaparivṛto rājahaṃsa iva haṃsagaṇaparivṛtaḥ suparṇīva pakṣigaṇaparivṛto vipra iva śiṣyagaṇaparivṛtaḥ suvaidya ivāturagaṇaparivṛtaḥ śūra iva yodhagaṇaparivṛto deśika ivādhvagaṇaparivṛtaḥ sārthavāha iva vaṇiggaṇaparivṛtaḥ śreṣṭhīva pauragaṇaparivṛtaḥ koṭṭarāja iva mantri­gaṇa­pari­vṛtaś­cakra­vartīva putra­sahas­ra­pari­vṛtaścandra iva nakṣatragaṇaparivṛtaḥ sūrya iva raśmisahasraparivṛto virūḍhaka iva kumbhāṇḍagaṇaparivṛto virūḍhapākṣa iva nāgagaṇaparivṛto dhanada iva yakṣagaṇaparivṛto dhṛtarāṣṭra iva gandharvagaṇaparivṛto vemacitra ivāsuragaṇaparivṛtaḥ śakra iva tridaśagaṇaparivṛto brahmeva brahmakāyikagaṇaparivṛtaḥ stimiva iva jalanidhiḥ sajala iva jaladharo vimada iva gajapariḥ sudāntair­indriya­ira­saṃ­kṣobhiteryāpathapracāro ’n­eka­irāveṇikairbuddha­dharma­irmahatā bhikṣusaṃghena ca puraskṛto yena śrāvastī tena cārikāṃ prakrāntaḥ |
anekaiśca deva­tā­śata­sahas­rairanugamyamāno ’nupūrveṇa cārikāṃ carañ śrāvastīmanuprāptaḥ śrāvastyāṃ viharati jetavane ’nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme |

aśrauṣustīrthyāḥ śramaṇo gautamaḥ śrāvastīṃ gata iti |
śrutvā ca punaḥ śrāvastīṃ saṃprasthitāḥ |
te śrāvastīṃ gatvā rājānaṃ prasenajit­kauśalamidamavocan—yat­khalu deva jānīthāh—vayam ṛddhimanto jñānavādinaḥ |
śramaṇo gautamo ṛddhimāñ jñāvādītyātmānaṃ pratijānīte |
arhati jñānavādī jñānavādinā sārdhamuttare manuṣyadharme ṛddhiprātihāryaṃ vidarśayitum |
yadyekaṃ śramaṇo gautama uttare manuṣyadharme ṛddhiprātihāryaṃ vidarśayiṣyati, vayaṃ dve |

kṣipraṃ bhadram yānam yojaya |
ahamabhiruhya adyaiva bhagavantaṃ darśanāyopasaṃkramiṣyāmi paryupāsanāyai |
evaṃ deveti sa puruṣo rājñaḥ prasenajitaḥ kauśalasya pratiśrutya kṣipraṃ bhadram yānam yojayitvā yena rājā prasenajit kauśalastenopasaṃkrāntaḥ |
upasaṃkramya rājānaṃ prasenajitaṃ kauśalamidamavocat—yuktaṃ devasya bhadram yānam yasyedānīṃ devaḥ kālaṃ manyate |
atha rājā prasenajit kauśalo bhadram yānamabhiruhya śrāvastyā niryāti bhagavato ’ntikaṃ bhagavantaṃ darśanāya upasaṃkramituṃ paryupāsanāya |
tasya yāvatī yānasya bhūmistāvadyānena gatvā yānādavatārya pādābhyāmeva ārāmaṃ praviśya yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ |
upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ |
ekānte niṣaṇṇo rājā prasenajit kauśalo bhagavantamidamavocat—ime bhadanta tīrthyā bhagavantamuttare manuṣyadharme riddhiprātihāryeṇāhvayante |
vidarśayatu bhagavānuttare manuṣyadharme riddhiprātihāryaṃ hitāya prāṇinām |
nirbhartsayatu bhagavāṃstīrthyān |
nandayatu devamanuṣyān |
toṣayatu sajjanahṛdayamanāṃsi |
evamukte bhagavān rājānaṃ prasenajitaṃ kauśalamidamavocat—nāhaṃ mahārāja evaṃ śrāvakāṇāṃ dharmaṃ deśayāmi evam yūyaṃ bhikṣava āgatāgatānāṃ brāhmaṇagṛhapatīnāmuttare manuṣyadharme riddhiprātihāryaṃ vidarśayateti |
api tu ahamevaṃ śrāvakāṇāṃ dharmaṃ deśayāmi—prat­icchan­nakalyāṇā bhikṣavo vivṛtapāpā iti |
dvirapi trirapi rājā prasenajit kauśalo bhagavantamidamavocat—vidarśayatu bhagavānuttare manuṣyadharme riddhiprātihāryaṃ hitāya prāṇinām |
nirbhartsayatu tīrthyān |
nandayatu bhagavān devamanuṣyān |
toṣayatu sajjanahṛdayamanāṃsi |
dharmatā khalu buddhānāṃ bhagavatāṃ jīvatāṃ tiṣṭhatāṃ dhriyamāṇānām yāpayatām yaduta daśāvaśyakariṇīyāni bhavanti |
na tāvadbuddhā bhagavantaḥ parinirvānti yāvanna buddho buddhaṃ vyākaroti, yāvanna dvitīyena sattvenā­pari­vartyamanuttarāyāṃ samyaksambodhau cittamutpāditaṃ bhavati, sarvabuddhavaineyā vinītā bhavanti, tribhāga āyuṣa utsṛṣo bhavati, sīmābandhaḥ kṛto bhavati, śrāvakayugamagratāyāṃ nirdiṣṭaṃ bhavati, sāṃkāśye nagare devatāvataraṇaṃ vidarśitaṃ bhavati, anavatapte mahāsarasi śrāvakaiḥ sārdhaṃ pūrvikā karmaplotirvyākṛtā bhavati, mātāpitarau satyeṣu pratiṣṭhāpitau bhavataḥ, śrāvastyāṃ mahāprātihāryaṃ vidarśitaṃ bhavati |
atha bhagavata etadabhavat—avaśyakaraṇīyametat­tathāga­teneti viditvā rājānaṃ prasenajitaṃ kauśalamā­mantra­yate—gaccha tvaṃ mahārāja |
itaḥ saptame divase tathāgato mahā­rāja­napratyakṣa­muttare manuṣyadharme riddhiprātihāryaṃ vidarśayiṣyati hitāya prāṇinām |
atha rājā prasenajit kauśalo bhagavantamidamavocat—yadi bhagavānanujānīyāt, ahaṃ bhagavataḥ prātihāryamaṇḍapaṃ kārayeyam |
atha bhagavata etadabhavat—katarasmin pradeśe pūrvakaiḥ samyaksam­buddha­ir­mahāprātihāryaṃ vidarśitaṃ hitāya prāṇināmiti? devatā bhagavata ārocayanti—antarā bhadanta śrāvastīmantarā ca jetavanamatrāntarāt pūrvakaiḥ samyaksambuddher­mahāprātihāryaṃ vidarśitaṃ hitāya prāṇinām |
bhagavato ’pi jñānadarśanaṃ pravartate—antarā ca śrāvastīmantarā ca jetavanamatrāntarāt pūrvakaiḥ samyaksam­buddha­ir­mahāprātihāryaṃ vidarśitaṃ hitāya prāṇinām |
adhivāsayati bhagavān rājñaḥ prasenajitaḥ kauśalasya tūṣṇībhāvena |
atha rājā prasenajit kauśalo bhagavatastūṣṇī­bhāvenā­dhivāsanāṃ viditvā bhagavantamidamavocat—katamasmin bhadanta pradeśe prātihāryamaṇḍapaṃ kārayāmi? antarā ca mahārāja śrāvastīmantarā ca jetavanam |
atha rājā prasenajit kauśalo bhagavato bhāṣitamabhinandyānumodya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā bhagavato ’ntikāt prakrāntaḥ |

atha rājā prasenajit kauśalastīrthyānidamavocat—yat­khalu bhavanto jānīran—itaḥ saptame divase bhagavānuttare manuṣyadharme riddhiprātihāryaṃ vidarśayiṣyati |

niṣaṇṇo lūhasudatto gṛhapatiryathāsvake āsane |
yathā lūhasudatto gṛhapatirevaṃ kālo rājabhrātā, rambhaka ārāmikaḥ, ṛddhilamātā upāsikā śramaṇoddeśikā, cundaḥ śramaṇoddeśaḥ, utpalavarṇā bhikṣuṇī |
athāyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyana utthāyāsanādekāṃ­sa­mutta­rāsaṅgaṃ kṛtvā yena bhagavāṃstenāñjaliṃ praṇamya bhagavantamidamavocat—alpotsuko bhagavān bhavatu |
ahaṃ tīrthyaiḥ sārdhamuttare manuṣyadharme riddhiprātihāryaṃ vidarśayiṣyāmi |
tīrthyān nigṛhṇiṣyāmi |
saha dharmeṇa nandayiṣyāmi devamanuṣyān |
toṣayiṣyāmi sajjanagṛhṛdayamanāṃsi |
pratibalastvaṃ maudgalyāyana tīrthyān sahadharmeṇa nigṛhītum |
api tu na tvaṃ tīrthyai riddhyā āhūtaḥ |
ahameṣāmuttare manuṣyadharme riddhiprātihāryaṃ vidarśayiṣyāmi hitāya prāṇinām |
nirbhartsayiṣyāmi tīrthyān |
nandayiṣyāmi devamanuṣyān |
toṣayiṣyāmi sajjanahṛdayamanāṃsi |

bhagavānuttare manuṣyadharme riddhiprātihāryam vidarśayatu hitāya prāṇinām |

atha bhagavāṃstadrūpaṃ samādhiṃ samāpanno yathā samāhite citte svasminnāsane ’ntarhitaḥ pūrvasyāṃ diśi uparivihāyasamabhyudgamya caturvidhamīryāpathaṃ kalpayati tadyathā—caṃkramyate tiṣṭhati niṣīdati śayyāṃ kalpayati |
tejodhātumapi saṃpadyate |
tejodhātusamāpannasya buddhasya bhagavato vividhānyarcīṣi kāyānniścaranti tadyathā nīlapītāni lohitānyavadātāni mañjiṣṭhāni sphaṭikavarṇāni |
anekānyapi prātihāryāṇi vidarśyati |
adhaḥkāyaṃ prajvālayati, uparimāt kāyācchītalā vāridhārāḥ syandante |
yathā pūrvasyāṃ diśi evaṃ dakṣiṇasyāṃ diśīti caturdiśaṃ caturvidham ṛddhiprātihāryaṃ vidarśya tān ṛddhyabhisaṃskārān pratiprasrabhya prajñapta evāsane niṣaṇṇaḥ |
niṣadya bhagavān rājānaṃ prasenajitaṃ kauśalamidamavocat—iyaṃ mahārāja tathāgatasya sarvaśrāvakasādhāraṇā ṛddhiḥ |
tatra bhagavān dvirapi rājānaṃ prasenajitaṃ kauśalamāmantrayate—ko mahārāja tathāgatamadhyeṣate ’sādhāraṇāyām ṛddhyāmuttare manuṣyadharme riddhiprātihāryaṃ hitāya prāṇinām? atha rājā prasenajit kauśala utthāyāsanādekāṃ­sa­mutta­rāsaṅgaṃ kṛtvā dakṣiṇaṃ jānumaṇḍalaṃ pṛthivyāṃ pratiṣṭhāpya yena bhagavāṃstenāñjaliṃ praṇamya bhagavantamidamavocat—ahaṃ bhadanta bhagavantamadhyeṣe ’sādhāraṇāyām ṛddhyāmuttare manuṣyadharme ṛddhiprātihāryaṃ hitāya prāṇinām |

atha lokottara­citta­mut­pāda­yanti, tatrāgatirbhavati pratyekabuddhānāmapi, kaḥ punarvādaḥ śrāvakāṇām? atha śakrabrahmādīnāṃ devānāmetadabhavat—kimarthaṃ bhagavatā laukikaṃ cittamutpāditam? teṣāmetadabhavat—śrāvastyāṃ mahāprātihāryaṃ vidarśayitukāmo hitāya prāṇinām |
atha śakrabrahmādayo devā anekāni ca devatāśatasahasrāṇi bhagavataścetasā cittamājñāya tadyathā balavān puruṣaḥ saṃkuñcitaṃ vā bāhuṃ prasārayet, prasāritaṃ vā saṃkuñcayet, evameva śakrabrahmādayo devā anekāni ca devatāśatasahasrāṇi ca devaloke ’ntarhitāni, bhagavataḥ puratastasthuḥ |
atha brahmādayo devā bhagavantaṃ triḥ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā dakṣiṇaṃ pārśvaṃ niśritya niṣaṇṇāḥ |
śakrādayo devā bhagavantaṃ triḥ pradakṣiṇīktya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā vāmaṃ pārśvaṃ niśritya niṣaṇṇāḥ |
nandopanandābhyāṃ nāgarājābhyāṃ bhagavata upanāmitaṃ nirmitaṃ sahasrapatraṃ śakaṭacakramātraṃ sarvasauvarṇaṃ ratnadaṇḍaṃ padmam |
bhagavāṃśca padmakarṇikāyāṃ niṣaṇṇaḥ paryaṅkamābhujya ṛjuṃ kāyaṃ praṇidhāya pratimukhaṃ smṛtimupasthāpya |
padmasyopari padmaṃ nirmitam |
tatrāpi bhagavān paryaṅkaniṣaṇṇaḥ |
evamagrataḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ pārśvataḥ |
evaṃ bhagavatā buddhapiṇḍī nirmitā yāvadakaniṣṭha­bhavana­mu­pādāya buddhā bhagavanto parṣannirmitam(?) |
kecid­buddha­nirmāṇāṃś­cakram­yante, kecit tiṣṭhanti, kecinniṣīdanti, kecicchāyāṃ kalpayanti, tejodhātumapi samāpadyante, jvalanata­pana­varṣaṇavidyotanaprātihāryāṇi kurvanti |
anye praśnān pṛcchanti, anye visarjayanti |
gāthādvayaṃ bhāṣante— ārabhadhvaṃ niṣkrāmata yujyadhvaṃ buddhaśāsane |
dhunīta mṛtyunaḥ sainyaṃ naḍāgāramiva kuñjaraḥ (3)|
yo hyasmin dharmavinaye apramattaścariṣyati |
prahāya jātisaṃsāraṃ duḥkhasyāntaṃ kariṣyati (4)|
bhagavatā tathā adhiṣṭhitam yathā sarvaloko ’ nāvṛtamadrākṣīd­buddhā­vataṃ­sakam yāvadakaniṣṭha­bhavana­mu­pādāya antato bāladārakā api, yathāpi tadbuddhasya buddhānubhāvena devatānāṃ ca devatānubhāvena |

niṣadya bhagavāṃstasyāṃ velāyāṃ gāthāṃ bhāṣate— tāvadabhāsate kṛmiryāvannodayate divākaraḥ |
virocana udgate tu vairavyārto(?) bhavati na cāvabhāsate (5)|
tāvadavabhāsitamāsa tārkikairyāvannoditavāṃs­tathāgataḥ |
saṃbuddhāvabhāsite tu loke na tārkiko bhāsate na cāsya śrāvakaḥ (6)|

yūyamapi vidarśayadhvam |
evamukte tīrthyā anyonyaṃ vighaṭṭayanta evāhuh—tvamuttiṣṭha tvamuttiṣṭheti |
na kaścidapyuttiṣṭhati |

tena khalu punaḥ samayena pāñciko mahāsenāpatistasyāmeva parṣadi saṃnipatito ’bhūt saṃnipatitaḥ |
atha pāñcikasya yakṣasenāpateretadabhavat—ci­ramapi te ime mohapuruṣā bhagavantaṃ viheṭhayiṣyanti bhikṣusaṃghaṃ ceti viditvā tumulaṃ vātavarṣaṃ saṃjanayya mahāntamutsṛṣṭavān |
tumulena vātavarṣeṇa tīrthyāṇāṃ maṇḍapā adarśanapathe kṣiptāḥ |
tīrthyā hyaśanivarṣeṇa bādhyamānā diśo digbhyo vicalanti |
anekāni prāṇi­śata­sahas­rāṇyativarṣeṇa bādhyamānāni yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntāḥ |
upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte niṣaṇṇāni |
bhagavatā tathā adhiṣṭhitam yathā tasyāṃ parṣadyekavāribindur na patitaḥ |
ekāntaniṣaṇṇānyanekāni prāṇi­śata­sahas­rāṇ­yudā­namudānayanti—aho buddhaḥ, aho dharmaḥ, aho saṃghaḥ |
aho dharmasya svākhyātatā |
pāñcikena yakṣasenāpatinā tīrthyā abhihitāh—ete yūyaṃ mohapuruṣā bhagavantaṃ śaraṇaṃ gacchadhvaṃ dharmaṃ ca bhikṣusaṃghaṃ ca |
te niṣpalāyamānāḥ kathayanti—ete vayaṃ parvataṃ śaraṇaṃ gacchāmaḥ, vṛkṣāṇāṃ kuḍyānāmārāmāṇāṃ ca śaraṇaṃ gacchāmaḥ |

atha bhagavāṃstasyāṃ velāyāṃ gāthāṃ bhāṣate— bahavaḥ śaraṇam yānti parvatāṃśca vanāni ca |
ārāmāṃścaityavṛkṣāṃśca manuṣyā bhayatarjitāḥ (6)|
na hyetaccharaṇaṃ śreṣṭhaṃ naitaccharaṇamuttamam |
naitaccharaṇamāgamya sarvaduḥkhāt pramucyate (7)|
yastu buddhaṃ ca dharmaṃ ca saṃghaṃ ca śaraṇaṃ gataḥ |
āryasatyāni catvāri paśyati prajñayā yadā (8)|
duḥkhaṃ duḥkhasamutpannaṃ nirodhaṃ samatikramam |
āryaṃ cāṣṭāṅgikaṃ mārgaṃ kṣemaṃ nirvāṇagāminām (9)|
etadvai śaraṇaṃ śreṣṭhametaccharaṇa­muttamam |
etaccharaṇamāgamya sarvaduḥkhātpramucyate (10)|
atha pūraṇasyaitadabhavat—ś­ramaṇo gautamo madīyāñ śrāvakānanvāvartayiṣyati |
iti viditvā niṣpalāyan kathayati—aham yuṣmākaṃ śāsanasarvasvaṃ kathayiṣyāmi |
yāvad dṛṣṭigatān grāhayitumārabdhaḥ |
yaduta antavāmllokaḥ, anantaḥ, antavāṃścānantavāṃśca, naivāntavānnānantavān, sa jīvastaccharīramanyo jīvo ’nyaccharīramiti |
te kalahajātā viharanti bhaṇḍanajātā vigṛhītā vivādamāpannāḥ |
pūraṇo ’pi bhīto niṣpalāyitumārabdhaḥ |
sa niṣpalāyan paṇḍakena pratimārge dṛṣṭaḥ |
paṇḍako dṛṣṭvā gāthāṃ bhāṣate—kutastvamāgacchasi muktapāṇi rathakārameṣa iva nikṛttaśṛṅgaḥ |
dharmaṃ hyabhijñāya jinaprasaṃśastamāhiṇḍase kolikagardabho yathā (11)|
pūraṇaḥ prāha— gamanāya me samayaḥ pratyupasthitaḥ kāyasya me balavīryam na? kiṃcit |
spṛṣṭāśca bhāvāḥ sukhaduḥkhate me anāvṛtaṃ jñānamihārhatām (12)|
dūrāpagato ’smi … paritamirāpanudaśca tṛṣaṃ patati |
ācakṣva me dūṣika etamarthaṃ śītodakā kutra sā puṣkiriṇī (13)|
napuṃsakaḥ prāha— eṣā khalu śītā puṣkiriṇī nalinī ca virājati toyadhārā |
śramaṇādhama hīnāsatpuruṣa tvamimāṃ nanu paśyasi puṣkariṇīm (14)|
purāṇaḥ prāha— na tvaṃ naro nāpi ca nārikā tvaṃ śmaśrūṇi ca te nāsti na ca stanau tava |
bhinnasvaro ’si na ca cakravākah evaṃ bhavān vātahato nirucyate (15)|
atha pūraṇo nirgrantho vālukāghaṭaṃ kaṇṭhe baddhvā śītikāyāṃ puṣkiriṇyāṃ patitaḥ |
sa tatraiva kālagataḥ |

atha te nirgranthāḥ pūraṇaṃ mṛgayamāṇāḥ pratimārge gaṇikāṃ dṛṣṭvā pṛcchanti—bhadre, kaṃcit tvamadrākṣīrgacchantamiha pūraṇaṃ dharmaśāṭapraticchannaṃ kaṭacchavratabhojanam? gaṇikā prāha— āpāyiko nairayiko muktahastāvacārakaḥ |
śvetābhyāṃ pāṇipādābhyāmeṣa dhvaṃsati pūraṇaḥ (16)|
bhadre maivaṃ vocastvaṃ naitattava subhāṣitam |
dharmaśāṭapraticchanno dharmaṃ saṃcarate (saṃśrayate?) muniḥ (17)|
gaṇikā prāha— kathaṃ sa buddhimān bhavati puruṣo vyañjanānvitaḥ |
lokasya paśyato yo ’yaṃ grāme carati nagnakaḥ (18)|
yasyāyamīdṛśo dharmaḥ purastāllambate daśā |
tasya vai śravaṇau rājā kṣurapreṇāvakṛntatu (19)|
atha te nirgranthā yena śītikā puṣkiriṇī tenopasaṃkrāntāḥ |
adrākṣīste nirgranthāḥ pūraṇaṃ kāśyapaṃ puṣkiriṇyāṃ mṛtam |
kālagataṃ dṛṣṭvā ca punaḥ puṣkiriṇyā uddhṛtya ekānte chorayitvā prakrāntāḥ |

bhagavatā buddhanirmāṇo nirmito dvātriṃśatā mahāpuruṣalakṣaṇaiḥ samanvāgato muṇḍaḥ saṃghāṭīprāvṛtaḥ |
dharmatā khalu buddhā bhagavanto nirmitena sārdhaṃ niścayaṃ kurvanti |
yaṃ khalu śrāvako nirmitamabhinirmimīte, yadi śrāvako bhāṣate, nirmito ’pi bhāṣate |
śrāvake tūṣṇībhūte nirmito ’pi tūṣṇībhavati |
ekasya bhāṣamāṇasya sarve bhāṣante nirmitāḥ |
ekasya tūṣṇībhūtasya sarve tūṣṇībhavanti te (20)|
bhagavān nirmitaṃ praśnaṃ pṛcchati, bhagavān vyākaroti |
eṣā hi dharmatā tathāgatānāmarhatāṃ samyaksambuddhānām |

bhagavatā tasya mahājanakāyasya tathā abhiprasannasya āśayaṃ cānuśayaṃ ca dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśī caturāryasatyasamprativedhakī dharmadeśanā kṛtā, yathā anekaiḥ prāṇiśatasahasraiḥ śaraṇagamanaśikṣāpadāni kaiściduṣma(?)­gatān­yadhi­gatāni mūrdhānaḥ kṣāntayo laukikā agradharmāḥ |
kaiścitsrotāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtaṃ sakṛdāgāmiphala­manā­gāmiphalam |
kaiścit pravrajya sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam |
kaiścicchrāvakamahābodhau bījānyavaropitāni |
kaiścit pratyekāyāṃ bodhau bījānyavaropitāni |
yadbhūyasā sā parṣad buddhaniṃnā dharmapravaṇā saṃghaprāgbhārā vyavasthitā |
atha bhagavāṃstāṃ parṣadaṃ buddhaniṃnāṃ dharmapravaṇāṃ saṃghaprāgbhārāṃ vyavasthāpyotthāyāsanāt prakrāntaḥ |

dhanyāste puruṣā loke ye buddhaṃ śaraṇaṃ gatāḥ |
nirvṛtiṃ te gamiṣyanti buddhakārakṛtau janāḥ (21)|
ye ’lpānapi jine kārān kariṣyanti vināyake |
vicitraṃ svargamāgamya te lapsyante ’mṛtaṃ padam (22)|

āttamanasaste bhikṣavo bhagavato bhāṣitamabhyanandan |
