buddho bhagavāñ śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane ’nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme |
tena khalu punaḥ samayena śiśumāragirau bodho nāma gṛhapatiḥ prativasati āḍhyo mahādhāno mahābhogo vistīrṇaviśālaparigraho vaiśravaṇadhanasamudito vaiśravaṇadhanapratispardhī |
tena sadṛśāt kulāt kalatramānītam |
sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati |
tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ kālāntareṇa patnī āpannasattvā saṃvṛttā |
sā upariprāsādatalagatā ayantritopacārā dhāryate, kālartukaiścopakaraṇairanuvidhīyate, vaidyaprajñaptaiścāhārair nātitiktair nātyamlair nātilavaṇair nātimadhurair nātikaṭukair nātikaṣāyaistiktāmlalavaṇama­dhura­kaṭukakaṣāyavivarjitairāhāraiḥ |
hārārdhahārabhūṣitagātrā apsareva nandanavanacāriṇī mañcānmañcaṃ pīṭhātpīṭhamanavatarantī adharimāṃ bhūmim |
na cāsyāḥ kiṃ­cida­manoj­ñaśabdaśravaṇam yāvadeva garbhasya paripākāya |
sā aṣṭānāṃ vā navānāṃ vā māsānāmatyayāt prasūtā |
dārikā jātā abhirūpā darśanīyā prādādikā sarvāṅgapratyaṅgopetā |
tasyāstrīṇi saptakāny­eka­viṃ­śatidivasān vistareṇa jātimahaṃ kṛtvā varṇa­saṃs­thānaviśeṣānurūpaṃ nāmadheyaṃ vyapasthāpitam |
sā dhātryaṅkagatā unnīyate vardhyate kṣīreṇa dadhnā navanītena sarpiṣā saripimaṇḍenānyaiśca cottaptottaptairupakaraṇaviśeṣaiḥ |
āśu vardhate hradasthamiva paṅkajam |
yadā mahatī saṃvṛttā, tadā rūpiṇī yauvanānurūpayā ācāravihāraceṣṭayā devakanyeva tadgṛhamavabhāsamānā sugṛtsambandhibāndhavānāmantarjanasya ca prītimutpādayati |
tasyāstādṛśīṃ vibhūtiṃ śrutvā nānādeśanivāsrājaputrā amātyaputrā gṛhapatiputrā dhaninaḥ śreṣṭhiputrāḥ sārthavāhaputrāśca bhāryārtham yācanakān preṣayanti |
yathā yathā cāsau prāthyate, tathā tathā bodho gṛhapatiḥ sutarāṃ prītimutpādayati |
saṃlakṣayati—mayā eṣā na kasyacidrūpeṇa deyā, na śilpena, nāpyādhipatyena, kiṃ tu yo mama kulaśīlena vā dhanena vā sadṛśo bhavati, tasya mayā dātavyeti |
sa caivaṃ cintayati |

anāthapiṇḍadena gṛhapatinā śrutam yathā śiśumāragirau bodho gṛhapatistasya duhitā evaṃ rūpayauvanasamuditā, sā nānādeśanivāsināṃ rājāmātyagṛhapatidhanināṃ śreṣṭhisārthavāhaputrāṇāmarthāya prārthyata iti |
śrutvā ca punarasyaitadabhavat—ahamapi tāvat tāṃ putrasyārthāya prārthayāmi |
kadācid bodho gṛhapatirdadyāditi viditvā tasyā yācanakāḥ preṣitāḥ |
bodhena gṛhapatinā anāthapiṇḍadasya gṛhapateḥ samudācāradhanasampadaṃ ca vicārya dattā |
anāthapiṇḍadena gṛhapatinā mahatā śrīsamudayena putrasya pariṇītā |
yāvat punarapi bodhasya gṛhapateḥ patnyā sārdhaṃ krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ patnī āpannasattvā saṃvṛttā |
yameva divasamāpannasattvā saṃvṛttā, tameva divasaṃ bodhasya gṛhapateranekānyanarthaśatāni prādurbhūtāni |
tena naimittikā āhūya pṛṣṭāh—bhavantaḥ, paśyata kasya prabhāvānmamānarthaśatāni prādurbhūtāni |
naimittikā vicāryai­kama­tenāhuh—gṛhapate, ya eṣa tava patnyāḥ kukṣimavakrāntaḥ, asyaiṣa prabhāvaḥ |
tadasya parityāgaḥ kriyatām |
iti śrutvā bodho gṛhapatiḥ paraṃ viṣādamāpannaḥ |
kathayati—bhavantaḥ, svāgataṃ na parityakṣyāmīti |
naimittāḥ svastītyuktvā prakrāntāḥ |
atha bodho gṛhapatirviyoga­saṃ­janitadaurmanasyo ’pi lokāpavādabhayādabhyupekṣyāvasthitaḥ |

yathā yathāsau garbho vṛddhiṃ gacchati, tathā tathā bodhasya gṛhapateruttarottarātiśayenānarthaśatānyutpadyante |
sa saṃlakṣayati—ka etāni śṛṇoti? udyānaṃ gatvā tiṣṭhāmīti viditvā tena pauruṣeyā uktāh—yadi me kaścinmahānanartha utpadyate, sa śrāvayitavyo nānya ityuktvā udyānaṃ gatvā avasthito yāvadasyāsau patnī prasūtā |
dārako jātaḥ |
anyatamaḥ puruṣastvaritaṃ tvaritaṃ bodhasya gṛhapateḥ sakāśaṃ gataḥ |
tenāsau dūrata eva dṛṣṭaḥ |
sa saṃlakṣayati—yathāyaṃ tvaritatvaritamāgacchati, nūnaṃ mahānanarthaḥ prādurbhūtaḥ |
iti viditvā sasambhramaḥ pṛcchati—bhoḥ puruṣa, kiṃ tvaritvaritamāgacchasīti? sa kathayati—gṛhapte, diṣṭyā vardhase, putraste jāta iti |
sa kathayati—bhoḥ puruṣa, yadyapi me putro ’narhaśatānyutpādya jātaḥ, tathāpi svāgatamasyeti |
tadanantarameva dvitīyapuruṣastathaiva tvaritatvaritamaśruparyākulekṣaṇo bodhasya gṛhapateḥ sakāśaṃ gataḥ |
so ’pi tenānarthatayā sasambhrameṇa pṛṣṭah—bhoḥ puruṣa, kiṃ tvaritatvaritamāgacchasīti? sa bāṣpoparudhya­māna­gadgadakaṇṭhaḥ karuṇādīnavilambitākṣaraṃ kathayati—gṛhapate, gṛhe ’gnirutthitaḥ |
sarvaṃ svāpateyaṃ dagdhamiti |
sa muhurmuhuranarthaśravaṇadṛḍhīkṛta­citta­saṃ­tatiḥ kathayati—bhoḥ puruṣa, prāptavyametat |
alaṃ viṣādena, tūṣṇīṃ tiṣṭheti |
atha tasya jñātayo lokadharmānuvṛttyā avajñāpūrvakena nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpayitu­mārab­dhāh—kiṃ bhavatu dāraksya nāmeti |
tatraike kathayanti—yatkulasadṛśaṃ tatkriyatāmiti |
apare kathayanti—yena bodhasya gṛhapateḥ kukṣigatenaivān­eka­dhanasamuditaṃ gṛhaṃ nidhanamupanītam, tasya kīdṛśaṃ kulasadṛśaṃ nāma vyavasthāpyate? api tu ayaṃ pitrā jātamātraḥ svāgatavādena samudācaritaḥ, tasmādasya svāgata iti nāma bhavatu iti |
tasya svāgata iti nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpitam |
yathā yathā svāgato vṛddhimupayāti, tathā tathā bodhasya gṛhapaterdhanadhānyahiraṇyasuvarṇadāsīdā­sakar­makarapauruṣeyāstanutvaṃ parikṣayaṃ paryādānaṃ gacchanti |
yāvadapareṇa samayena bodho gṛhapatiḥ kālagataḥ |
sāpyasya patnī kālagatā |
tadgṛhaṃ pratisaṃskṛtaṃ punaragninā dagdham |
ye ’pyasya pauruṣeyāḥ paṇyamādāya deśāntaragatā mahāsamudram yāvattīrṇāḥ, tataḥ keṣāṃcidyānapātraṃ vipannam, keṣāṃcit paṇyamapaṇyījātam, kecit tatraivānayena vyasanamāpannāḥ, keṣāṃcit kāntāramadhyagatānāṃ caurairdravyamapahṛtam, keṣāṃ­cinna­gara­samīpamanuprāptānāṃ śaulkikaśaulkikairdravyaṃ vicārayadbhiḥ sāro gṛhītaḥ, keṣāṃcit pattanamanuprāptānāṃ rājñā viniyuktairdoṣamutpādya sarvasvamapahṛtam |
kecidbodhasya gṛhapateḥ prāṇaviyogaṃ śrutvā tatraiva avasthitāḥ |
jñātīnāmapi kecit kālagatāḥ, kecinniṣpalāyitāḥ, kecit tatraivāvasthitāḥ svāgatasya vācamapi na prayacchanti |
dāsīdā­sakar­makarapauruṣeyā api kecit kālagatāḥ, kecinniṣpalāyitāḥ, kecidanyāśrayeṇa tatraivāvasthitāḥ santaḥ svāgatasya nāmāpi na gṛhṇanti |
kiṃ tu bodhasyaikā purāṇavṛddhā dāsī kṛtajñatayā svāgatasyopasthānaṃ kurvantī tiṣṭhati |
tayā sa lipyakṣaracāryasyākṣarāṇi śikṣayitumupanyastaḥ |
sā saṃlakṣayati—bodhasya gṛhapatergṛhaman­eka­dhanasamuditaṃ vistīrṇas­vajanabandhuvargaṃ prabhūta­dāsīdā­sakar­makarapauruṣeyam paryādānaṃ gatam |
svāgato ’haṃ cāvasthitāḥ |
tajjijñāsyāmi tāvat kasyāpuṇyenāyamupaplavaḥ, kiṃ svāgatasya āhosvinmameti |
tayā svāgatasya nāṃnā sthālyāṃ taṇḍulān prakṣipya bhaktārtham yojitā vinaṣṭāḥ |
tata ātmano nāṃnā tathaiva yojitāḥ, śobhanaṃ bhaktaṃ saṃpannam |
sā saṃlakṣayati—asau mandabhāgyaḥ |
etamāgamya bodhasya gṛhapatergṛhaman­eka­dhanasamuditaṃ vistīrṇas­vajanabandhuvargaṃ prabhūta­dāsīdā­sakar­makarapauruṣeyaṃ parikṣayaṃ paryādānaṃ gatam |
ahaṃ punar na yāsyāmīti |
kṛtaḥ sthāsyāmīti? atra prāptakālaṃ sarvathā yāvat prāṇaviyogo na bhavati tāvanniṣpalāyeyem |
iti viditvā yattatra kiṃcit sāramasti, tamādāya niṣpalāyitā |
tasmiñ śūnye gṛhe śvānaḥ praviśya kalahaṃ kartumārabdhāḥ |
yāvadanyatamo dhūrtapuruṣastena pradeśenātikrāmati |
sa śvānakalahaṃ śrutvā saṃlakṣayati—bodhasya gṛhapatergṛhe śvānaḥ kaliṃ kurvanti |
kiṃ tadanyaṃ bhavet? paśyāmi tāvaditi |
sa tatra praviṣṭo yāvat paśyati śūnyam |
so ’pi tasmādyat kiṃciccheṣāvaśeṣamasti, tamādāya prakrāntaḥ |

tataḥ svāgato bhojanavelāṃ jñātvā lekhaśālāyāḥ svagṛhamāgato bhoktumiti yāvat paśyati śūnyam |
sa bhoktukāmāvarjita­saṃ­tatih(?) kṣudhā­saṃ­janitadaurmanasyaḥ śabdāpayitumārabdhah—amba ambeti |
na kaścidvacanaṃ dadāti |
sa tadgṛhamatiścāmutaśca vyavalokya nairāśyamāpanno niṣkrāntaḥ |
tasya gṛhasya nātidūre ’nyagṛham |
tasmin svāgatasya jñātastiṣṭhanti |
sa teṣāṃ sakāśaṃ gato yāvattatra kaliḥ prādurbhūtaḥ |
te kalahaṃ kṛtvā vyupaśāntāḥ parasparaṃ kathayanti—bhavantaḥ, pūrvamasmākamanyonyaṃ dṛṣṭvā sneho bhavati, idānīṃ tu dveṣaḥ |
paśyadhvaṃ kaścidanya āgataḥ syāditi |
te samanveṣitumārabdhā yāvat paśyanti svāgatam |
tatraike kathayanti—bhavantaḥ, svāgataḥ praviṣṭa iti |
apare kathayanti—nāyaṃ svāgatāḥ, kiṃ tu durāgataḥ, imamāgamyāsmākaṃ kaliḥ prādurbhūta iti |
sa tairgrīvāyāṃ gṛhītvā niṣkāsito ’nyatra gataḥ |
tasmādapi niṣkāsito yāvat kroḍamallānāṃ madhye praviṣṭaḥ |
te yatra yatra bhaikṣārthikāḥ praviśanti, tatra nirbhartsyante niṣkāsyante ca |
te nairāśyamāpannā riktahastakā riktamallakāḥ śūnya­deva­kulamaṇḍapavṛkṣa­mūlān­yā­gatāḥ |
te ’nyonyaṃ pṛcchanti—bhavantaḥ, vayaṃ pūrve yatra yatra gacchāmastataḥ pūrṇahastāḥ pūrṇamallakā āgacchāmaḥ |
idānīṃ ko yogo yena vayaṃ riktahastakā riktamallakā nairāśyamāpannā ihāgatā iti? tatraike kathayanti—nūnaṃ ko ’pi mandabhāgyo ’smākaṃ madhye praviṣṭo yena vayaṃ riktahastā riktamallakā ihāgatā iti |
apare kathayanti—gatametat |
dvidhā bhūtvā praviśāma iti |
te parasmin divase dvidhā praviṣṭāḥ |
tatra yeṣāṃ madhye svāgataste tathaiva nirbhartsitā niṣkāsitāśca nairāśyamāpannā riktahastā riktamallāśca yathānilayamāgatāḥ |
te tvanye pūrṇahastā pūrṇamallakā āgatāḥ |
ye te riktahastakā riktapātrā āgatāste bhūyo dvidhā bhūtvā praviṣṭāḥ |
tatra teṣāmapi yeṣāṃ madhye svāgataste tathaiva riktahastā riktamallakāścāgatāḥ |
te bhūyo dvidhā bhūtā evam yāvat svāgatakroḍamallakau praviṣṭau riktahastau riktamallakau āgatau |
te tvanye pūrṇahastāh pūrṇamallakā āgatāḥ |
tataste kroḍamallakāḥ sarve saṃbhūya saṃkalpaṃ kartumārabdhāh—bhavantaḥ, ayaṃ mandabhāgyo ’smākaṃ madhye praviṣṭho yena vayaṃ riktahastā rikmallakāścāgatāḥ |
niṣkāsayāma enamiti |
sa taiḥ prabhūtān prahārān dattvā śirasi ca mallakaṃ bhaṅktvā niṣkāsitaḥ |

atrāntare yāvacchrāvasteyo vaṇijo bodhasya gṛhapatervayasyaḥ paṇyamādāya śiśumāragirimanuprāptaḥ |
tena svāgato mallakena hastagatena pīṭhīṃ gato mukhabimbakena pratyabhijñāta uktaśca—putra tvaṃ bodhagṛhapateḥ putra iti? sa kathayati—tāta, ahaṃ tasya putro durāgata iti |
sa muhūrtaṃ tūṣṇīṃ sthitvā aśruparyākulekṣaṇaḥ kathayati—putra, tau tava mātāpitarau kālagatau? te jñātayah? sa āha—teṣāmapi kecit kālagatāḥ kecidihaiva tiṣṭhanto vācamapi na prayacchanti |
te dāsīdās­karma­karapauruṣeyāh? teṣāmapi kecit kālagatāḥ, kecinniṣpalāyitāḥ, kecidihaivānyānāśrityāvasthitā vācamapi na prayacchanti |
yadavaśiṣṭaṃ dhanaṃ tadapi kiṃcidagninā dagdham |
ye vaṇikpauruṣeyāḥ paṇyaṃ gṛhītvā dhanārthino deśāntaraṃ mahāsamudraṃ cāvatīrṇāḥ, tatrāpi keṣāṃcit paṇyamapaṇyībhūtam, kecit tatraivānayena vyasanamāpannāḥ, keṣāṃcit kāntāramadhyagatānāṃ taskairadravyamapahṛtam, keṣāṃ­cinna­gara­samīpamanuprāptānāṃ śaulkikaśaulkikairdravyaṃ vicārayadbhiḥ sāro gṛhītaḥ, keṣāṃcit pattanamanuprāptānāṃ rājño viniyuktairdoṣamutpādya sarvasvamapahṛtam |
kecit tasya prāṇaviyogaṃ śrutvā tatraivāvasthitāḥ |
sa dīrghamuṣṇaṃ ca niśvasya kathayati—putra śrāvastīṃ kiṃ na gacchasi? tāta, kiṃ tatragatasya bhaviṣyati? putra, tatrānāthapiṇḍado gṛhapatiḥ, tasya putreṇa tava bhaginī pariṇītā |
sā tava yogodvahanaṃ kariṣyatīti |
sa kathayati—tāta, yadyevaṃ gacchāmīti |
tena tasya dvau kārṣāpaṇau dattau, uktaśca—putra, ābhyāṃ tāvadātmānaṃ saṃdhāraya, yāvadahaṃ paṇyaṃ visarjayāmi |
mayā sārdhaṃ gamiṣyasi |
tena tau kārṣāpaṇau khustavastrānte baddhvā sthāpitau, karmavipākena vismṛtau |
tathaivāsau kutaścit kiṃcidārāgayati kiṃcinnārāgāyati |
kṣudhayā pīḍyamāno ’vasthitaḥ |
yāvadasau vaṇik paṇyaṃ visarjayitvā pratipaṇyamādāya svāgataṃ vaismṛtya saṃprasthitaḥ |
svāgato ’pi tena sārdhaṃ saṃprasthitaḥ |
yāvat te sārthakāḥ kaliṃ kartumārabdhāḥ, balīvardā yoddhumārabdhāḥ |
sārthikāḥ kathayanti—bhavantaḥ, pratyavekṣata sārtham |
mā asau durāgato ’trāgataḥ syāditi |
taiḥ pratyavekṣamāṇairasau dṛṣṭaḥ |
te taṃ khaṭucapeṭādibhistāḍayitvā ardhacandrakāreṇa grīvāyāṃ gṛhītvā niṣkāsitumārabdhāḥ |
sa niṣkāsitaḥ |
niṣkramyamāṇo vikroṣṭumārabdhaḥ |
sārthavāhastaṃ kolāhalaśabdaṃ śrutvā nirīkṣitumārabdhaḥ, yāvat paśyati taṃ niṣkāsyamānam |
sa kathayati—bhavantaḥ, mā enaṃ niṣkāsayata, mamaiṣa vayasyaputro bhavatīti |
te kathayanti—sārthavāha, yamāgamya bodhasya gṛhapateran­eka­dhanasamuditaṃ sasuhṛtsambandhibāndhavaṃ gṛhaṃ vinaṣṭam, kathaṃ tena sārdhaṃ gacchāmah? sarvathā tvaṃ sārthasya svāmī |
yadyeṣa gacchati, vayaṃ na gacchāma iti |
sārthavāhastaṃ kathayati—putra, mahājanavirodho ’tra bhavati |
sārthakāḥ kṣubhitāḥ |
tvaṃ paścādvāsoddhātikayā gaccha, ahaṃ tavārthe āhāraṃ sthāpayāmīti |
sa mātāpitṛviyogapratispardhinā pūrva­karmā­parādhaprabhāveṇa duḥkhadaurmanasyena saṃtāpitamanāḥ sāśrukaṇṭhastūṣṇīmavasthitaḥ |
sārthaḥ saṃprasthitaḥ |
so ’pi vāsoddhātikayā gantumārabdhaḥ |
sa sārthavāhastasyāhāraṃ patrapuṭake baddhvā kiṃcidbhūmau pāṃśunā praticchādya sthāpayati, kiṃ­cidvṛkṣaśākhā­patra­iravacchādya |
tatra yaṃ bhūmau sthāpayati, sa śṛgālairanyaiścatuṣ­pāda­urbhakṣyate |
yaṃ vṛkṣaśākhāsu, sa pakṣibhiḥ śākhāmṛgaiśca bhakṣyate |
tataḥ kiṃcidārāgayati kiṃcinnārāgayati |
asthānamanavakāśo yaccaramabhavikaḥ sattvo ’samprāpte viśeṣādhigame so ’ntarā kālaṃ kuryāt |
sa kṛcchreṇa śrāvastīmanuprāptaḥ |
bahiḥ śrāvastyāmudapānopakaṇṭhake viśrāntaḥ |
yāvat tasya bhaginyāḥ santikā preṣyadārikā udakārthinī kumbhamādāya gatā |
sa tayā mukhabimbakena pratyabhijñātaḥ |
sā ciraṃ nirīkṣya hīnadīnavadanā kathayati—dāraka, tvaṃ bodhasya gṛhapateḥ śuśumāragirīyakasya putra iti? sa kathayati—evaṃ māṃ bhaginījanaḥ saṃjānīta iti |
sā aśruparyākulekṣaṇā bāṣpoparudhyamānakaṇṭhā urasi prahāraṃ dattvā karuṇādīnavilambitākṣaraṃ praṣṭumārabdhā |
tau tava mātāpitarau kālagatau? kālagatau |
te jñātayah? sa kathayati—teṣāmapi kecit kālagatāḥ, kecinniṣpalāyitāḥ, kecit tatraiva tiṣṭhanto vācamapi na prayacchanti |
te dāsīdā­sakar­makarapauruṣeyāh? teṣāmapi kecit kālagatāḥ, kecinniṣpalāyitāḥ, kecit tatraivānyānāśrityāvasthitā vācamapi na prayacchanti |
yadapi dhanajātaṃ tadapi kiṃcidagninā dagdham, kiṃcidanyapauruṣeyā gṛhītvā dhanārthino deśāntaraṃ mahāsamudraṃ cāvatīrṇāḥ |
tatrāpi keṣāṃcidyānapātraṃ vipannam, keṣāṃcit paṇyamapaṇyībhūtam, kecit tatraivānayena vyasanamāpannāḥ, keṣāṃcit kāntāramadhyagatānāṃ taskarairdravyamapahṛtam, keṣāṃ­cinna­gara­samīpamanuprāptānāṃ śaulkikaśaulkikairdravyaṃ vicārayadbhiḥ sāro gṛhītaḥ, keṣāṃcit pattanamanuprāptānāṃ rājaniyuktairdoṣamutpādya sarvasvamapahṛtam, kecittasya prāṇaviyogaṃ śrutvā tatraivāvasthitāḥ |
sā dīrghamuṣṇaṃ ca niśvasya kathayati—ihaiva tiṣṭha yāvatte bhaginyāḥ kathayāmīti |
tayā gatvā tasyāḥ prayacchannaṃ kathitam |
kīdṛśena paṇyeneti? sā kathayati—kuto ’sya paṇyam? daṇḍamasya haste mallakaśceti |
tayā tasyārthaṃ mahārhāṇi vastrāṇi dattāni |
kārṣāpaṇāṃśca dattvā uktā ca—sa vaktavyo yadi te bhāgineyo vā bhāgineyikā vā upasaṃkrāmati, tasyaiva kārṣāpaṇān dadyāḥ |
mā jñātīnāṃ pratarkyo bhaviṣyatīti |
sā vastrāṇyādāya kārṣāpaṇāṃśca tasya sakāśaṃ gatā kathayati—imāni te vastrāṇi kārṣāpaṇāśca bhaginyā preṣitāni, kathayati ca—yadi te bhāgineyo vā bhāgineyikā vā upasaṃkrāmati, tasyaitatkārṣāpaṇān dadyāḥ |
mā jñātīnāṃ pratarkyo bhaviṣyasi |
sa kathayati—śobhanameva bhavati |
ityuktvā tūṣṇīmavasthitaḥ |
dārikā prakrāntā |
sa saṃ­lakṣayati—anāthapiṇḍado gṛhapatirvistīrṇas­vajana­pari­vāraḥ |
asmākamapi pitā vistīrṇaparivāraḥ |
teṣāmamekaikaśo vārtāṃ pratyavekṣate |

ācaritaṃ śrāvastyāmudyānamoṣakāḥ puruṣāḥ pratidinamanvāhiṇḍyante |
te yadi suptaṃ puruṣaṃ paśyanti, pādena ghaṭṭayanti |
sa yadi prativibudhyate, tamevaṃ vadanti—bhoḥ puruṣa, na tvayā śrutam yathā śrāvastyāmudyānamoṣakāḥ puruṣāḥ pratidinamanvāhiṇḍyante? te yadi suptaṃ puruṣaṃ paśyanti, vadanti—uttiṣṭha gaccheti |
yadi na prativibudhyate, muṣitvā gacchanti |
taiḥ pādena ghaṭṭito na prativibudhyate |
muṣitvā prakrāntāḥ |
sa vigatamadyamadaḥ pratibuddho yāvat paśyati tānyevānantakāni(?) prāvṛtyāvasthitaḥ |
tato ’sya bhaginī saṃ­lakṣayati—aticirayatyasau |
nūnamatra kāraṇena bhavitavyamiti |
tasyāsau dārikā punaḥ preṣitā—dārike gaccha, cirayatyasau, paśya kimarthaṃ nāgacchatīti |
sā gatā yāvat paśyati muṣitakaṃ tenaiva veṣeṇāvasthitam |
sā tvaritatvaritaṃ gatā tasyāḥ kathayati—ārye, muṣitastenaiva veṣeṇa tiṣṭhatīti |
sā saṃlakṣayati—yamāgamya bodhasya gṛhapateran­eka­dhanasamuditaṃ sasuhṛtsambandhibāndhavaṃ gṛhaṃ vinaṣṭam, yadi tamiha praveśayāmi, sthānametadvidyate yanmayāpi śvaśuragṛhamanayena vyasanamāpatsyate |
nāsāviha praveśayitavyaḥ |
iti viditvā tayāpyupekṣitaḥ |

te ’nyonyaṃ pṛcchanti—bhavantaḥ, vayaṃ pūrvam yatra yatra gacchāmastataḥ pūrṇahastāḥ pūrṇamallakā gacchāmaḥ |
idānīṃ ko yogo yena vayaṃ riktahastā riktamallakā nairāśyamāpannā ihāgatā iti? tatraike kathayanti—nūnaṃ ko ’pi mandabhāgyo ’smākaṃ madhye praviṣṭo yena vayaṃ riktahastā riktamallakā ihāgatā iti |
apare kathayanti—dvidhā bhūtvā praviśāma iti |
te ’parasmin divase dvidhā bhūtvā praviṣṭāḥ |
tatra yeṣāṃ madhye svāgataḥ, te tathaiva nirbhartsitā niṣkāsitāśca nairāśyamāpannā riktahastā riktamallakāścāgatāḥ |

te kroḍamallakāḥ sarve saṃbhūya saṃjalpaṃ kartumārabdhāh—bhavantaḥ, ayaṃ mandabhāgyasattvo ’smākaṃ madhye praviṣṭo yena vayaṃ riktahastā riktamallakāścāgatāḥ |

tat kimidamiti kṛtvā asmān vidhārayasīti? sa kathayati—gṛhapatinā ājñādattā—na tāvat kasyacit kroḍamallakasya praveśo dātavyo yāvadbuddhapramukhena bhikṣusaṃghena bhuktam |

te kathayanti—bhavantaḥ, na kadācidvayaṃ vidhāryamāṇāh |

sa taiḥ prabhūtān prahārān datvā niṣkāsitastīvreṇa ca paryavasthānena śirasi mallakena prahāro dattaḥ |

yāvadbhagavān pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaramādāya bhikṣugaṇaparivṛto bhikṣusaṃghapuraskṛto yenānāthapiṇḍadasya gṛhapater niveśanaṃ tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ |
adrākṣīdbhagavān svāgataṃ paruṣarūkṣāṅgulidīrghakeśaṃ rajasāvacūrṇitagātraṃ kṛśamalpasthānaṃ malinajīrṇavāsonivasitaṃ śirasā bhagnena rudhireṇa pragharatā anyaiśca vraṇaiścākīrṇaiḥ, makṣikābhirupadrutaiḥ saṃkārakūṭe nipatitam |
dṛṣṭvā ca punarbhikṣūnāmantrayate sma—tṛpyata bhikṣavaḥ sarvabhavopapattibhyaḥ |
tṛpyata sarvabhavopapattyupakaraṇebhyaḥ, yatra nāma caramabhavikasya sattvasyeyamavasthā |
tatra bhagavāṃs taṃ svāgatamā­mantra­yate—ākāṅkṣase vatsa pātraśeṣam? bhagavan |

bhagavāṃstasya cetasā cittamājñāya kathayati—vatsa, yadi tvaṃ sumerumātraiḥ piṇḍaiḥ samudrasadṛśena kuṣkiṇā paribhokṣyase, tathāpyavyayaṃ tanna parikṣayaṃ gamiṣyati, yāvattṛptaḥ paribhuṅkṣva yathāsukhamiti |
tena tāvad bhuktam yāvat tṛpta iti |
tatsaṃtarpitendriyo bhagavato mukhaṃ vyavalokayitumārabdhaḥ |
bhagavānāha—vatsa svāgata, tṛpto ’si? tṛpto ’smi bhagavan |
vatsa, yadyevamapaścimaṃ kavalaṃ gṛhāṇa, antardhāsyatyeṣa pātra iti |
tenāpaścimakavalo gṛhītaḥ, so ’ntarhitaḥ |
bhagavān dakṣiṇādeśanāṃ kṛtvā prakrāntaḥ |
caramabhavikaḥ sa sattvo bhagavantaṃ pṛṣṭataḥ pṛṣṭataḥ samanubaddhaḥ |
yāvadbhagavān vihāraṃ gatvā purastādbhikṣusaṃghasya prajñapta evāsane niṣaṇṇaḥ |
so ’pi bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ |
bhagavān saṃlakṣayati—puṣpāṇāmenaṃ preṣayāmi, karmāpanayo ’sya kartavya |

vatsa gaccha, gaṇḍakasyārāmikasya sakāśānnīlotpalāni gṛhītvā āgaccheti |
svāgatastasya sakāśaṃ gataḥ |
sa taṃ dūrādeva dṛṣṭvā paryavasthitaḥ |
sa saṃlakṣayati—āgato ’yaṃ dūrāgataḥ |
niyataṃ mamānartho bhavati |
iti viditvā saparuṣaṃ kathayati—durāgata, kimarthaṃ rvamihāgacchasīti |
sa gāthāṃ bhāṣate— nīlotpalairasti kāryaṃ me tathānyair nāpi paṅkajaiḥ |
munīndrasya tu dūto ’haṃ sarvajñasya yaśasvinaḥ (4)|
ityuktvā pratinivartitumārabdhaḥ |
so ’pi gāthāṃ bhāṣate— ehyehi yadi dūto ’si tasya śāntātmano muneḥ |
pūjyaḥ sa naradevānāṃ pūjyaḥ pūjyatamairapi (5)|
ityuktvā sa kathayati—buddha­dūtastvam? buddhadūtaḥ |
kimarthamāgatah? puṣpārtham |
yadi buddhadūtastvam, gṛhāṇa yathepsitam |

bhagavānāha—vatsa, bhikṣūṇāṃ cāraya |

tatastaṃ bhagavānāha—vatsa, kiṃ na pravrajasīti? sa kathayati—pravrajāmi bhagavanniti |
bhagavatā pravrajita upasampādito manasikāraśca dattaḥ |
tena yujyamānena ghaṭamānena vyāyacchamānena idameva pañcagaṇḍakaṃ saṃsāracakraṃ calācalaṃ viditvā sarvasaṃskāragatīḥ śata­napatanavikiraṇavidhvaṃ­sana­dharma­tayā parāhatya sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam |
arhan saṃ­vṛttastrai­dhātu­kavītarāgaḥ samaloṣṭakāñcana ākāśapāṇitalasamacitto vāsīcandanakalpo vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośo vidyābhijñāprati­saṃ­vitprāpto bhavalābhalobhasat­kāraparānmukhaḥ |
sendropendrāṇāṃ pūjyo mānyo ’bhivādyaśca saṃvṛttaḥ |
so ’rhattvaṃ prāpto vimuktisukhapratisaṃvedī tasyāṃ velāyāṃ gāthāṃ bhāṣate— upāyapāśairvīreṇa baddhvāhaṃ tattvadarśinā |
kāruṇyāduddhṛto duḥkhājjīrṇaḥ paṅkādiva dvipaḥ (6)|
svāgato ’hamabhūvaṃ prāktataḥ paścāddurāgataḥ |
āgato ’smi purā nātha śrutvā vākyaṃ tavottamam (7)|
sāmprataṃ svāgato vyaktam saṃvṛtto na durāgatah |
sāmprataṃ kāñcanaṃ dehaṃ dhārayāmi nirāśravam (8)|
ratnāni pratilebhe hi svargaṃ mokṣaṃ ca kāṅkṣatām |

te ’vadhyāyanti kṣipanti vivādayanti—śramaṇo bhavanto gautama evamāha—sāmantaprāsādikaṃ me śāsanamiti |
atra kiṃ sāmantaprāsādikamityasya yatredānīṃ durāgataprabhṛtayo ’pi kroḍamallakāḥ pravrajantīti? atrāntare nāsti kiṃcidbuddhānāṃ bhagavatāmajñātamadṛṣṭamaviditamavijñātam |
bhagavān saṃ­lakṣayati—sumeruprakhyo mahāśrāvake mahājanakāyaḥ prasādaṃ pravedayate |
tadguṇodbhāvanamasya kartavyam, kutra kartavyam? yatraiva patitaḥ |
iti jñātvā ānandamāmantrayate sma—gaccha ānanda bhikṣūṇāmārocaya—tathāgato bhikṣavo bhargeṣu janapadeṣu cārikāṃ cariṣyati |
yo yuṣmākamutsahate tathāgatena sārdhaṃ bhargeṣu cārikāṃ cartum, sa cīvarakāṇi gṛhṇātu iti |
evaṃ bhadantetyāyuṣmānānando bhagavataḥ pratiśrutya bhikṣūṇāmārocayati—bhagavānāyuṣmanto bhargeṣu janapadeṣu cārikāṃ cariṣyati |
yo yuṣmākamutsahate bhagavatā sārdhaṃ bhargeṣu janapadeṣu cārikāṃ caritum, sa cīvarakāṇi gṛhṇātu iti |
atha bhagavān dānto dāntaparivāraḥ śāntaḥ śāntaparivāro mukto muktaparivāra āśvasta āśvastaparivāro vinīto vinītaparivāro ’rhannarhatparivāro vītarāgo vītarāgaparivāraḥ prāsādikah prasā­dika­pari­vāro vṛṣabha iva gogaṇaparivṛto gaja iva kalabhaparivṛtaḥ siṃha iva daṃṣṭṛgaṇaparivṛto haṃsarāja iva haṃsagaṇaparivṛtaḥ suparṇīva pakṣigaṇaparivṛto vipra iva śiṣyagaṇaparivṛtaḥ suvaidya ivāturagaṇaparivṛtaḥ śūra iva yodhagaṇaparivṛto deśika ivādhvagagaṇaparivṛtaḥ sārthavāha iva vaṇiggaṇaparivṛtaḥ śreṣṭhīva pauragaṇaparivṛtaḥ koṭṭarāja iva mantri­gaṇa­pari­vṛtaś­cakra­vartīva putra­sahas­ra­pari­vṛtaścandra iva nakṣatragaṇaparivṛtaḥ sūrya iva raśmisahasraparivṛto dhṛtarāṣṭra iva gandharvagaṇaparivṛto virūḍhaka iva kumbhāṇḍagaṇaparivṛto virūpakṣa iva nāgagaṇaparivṛto dhanada iva yakṣagaṇaparivṛto vemacitrīvāsura­gaṇa­pari­vṛtaḥ śakra iva tridaśagaṇaparivṛto brahmeva brahmakāyikagaṇaparivṛtaḥ stimati iva jalanidhiḥ sajala iva jaladharo vimada iva gajapariḥ sudānt­endriya­ira­saṃ­kṣobhiteryāpathapracāro dvātriṃśatā mahāpuruṣalakṣaṇaiḥ samalaṃkṛto ’śītyānuvyañjanairvirājitagātro vyāmaprabhālaṃkṛtamūrtiḥ sūryasahasrātirekaprabho jaṅgama iva ratnaparvataḥ samantato bhadrako daśabhirbalaiścaturbhir vaiśāradyaistribhirāveṇikaiḥ smṛtyupasthānair­mahā­karuṇayā ca samanvāgata ājñātakauṇḍinyabāṣpa­mahā­nāmāniruddhaśāriput­rama­udgalyāyanakāśyap­ānanda­raivataprabhṛtibhir­mahā­śrāvakaiḥ parivṛto ’nyena ca mahatā bhikṣusaṃghena yena śuśu­māra­giris­tenopa­saṃk­rāntaḥ |
anupūrveṇa cārikāṃ carañ śuśumāragirimanuprāptaḥ |
śuśumāragirau viharati bhīṣaṇikāvane mṛgadāve |
aśrauṣuḥ śuśumāragirīyakā brāhmaṇagṛhapatayah—bhagavān bhargeṣu janapadeṣu cārikāṃ carañ śuśumāragirimanuprāptaḥ śuśumāragirau viharati bhīṣaṇikāvane mṛgadāva iti |
śrutvā ca punaḥ saṃghāt saṃghaṃ pūgātpūgaṃ saṃgamya śuśumāragirer niṣkramya yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntāḥ |
upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte niṣaṇṇāḥ |
śuśumāragirīyakān brāhamaṇagṛhapatīn dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśayati samādāpayati samuttejayati saṃpraharṣayati |
anekaparyāyeṇa dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśya samādāpayati samuttejayati saṃpraharṣya tūṣṇīm |
atha śuśumāragirīyakā brāhmaṇagṛhapataya utthāyāsanādekāṃ­sa­mutta­rāsaṅgaṃ kṛtvā yena bhagavāṃstenāñjaliṃ praṇamya bhagavantamidamavocan—adhivāsayatvasmākaṃ bhagavāñ śvo ’ntargṛhe bhaktena sārdhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghena |
adhivāsayati bhagavāñ śuśumāragirīyakānāṃ brāhmaṇagṛhapatīnāṃ tūṣṇībhāvena |
atha śuśumāragirīyakā brāhmaṇagṛhapatayo bhagavatastūṣṇī­bhāvenā­dhivāsanāṃ viditvā bhagavato bhāṣitamabhinandyānumodya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā bhagavato ’ntikāt prakrāntāḥ |
atha śuśumāragirīyakā brāhmaṇagṛhapatayastāmeva rātriṃ śuci praṇītaṃ khādanīyabhojanīyaṃ samudānīya kālyamevotthāya āsanakāni prajñapya udakamaṇīn pratiṣṭhāpya bhagavato dūtena kālamārocayanti—samayo bhadanta, sajjaṃ bhaktam yasyedānīṃ bhagavān kālaṃ manyata iti |
atha bhagavān pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaramādāya bhikṣugaṇaparivṛto bhikṣusaṃghapuraskṛto yena śuśumāragirīyakānāṃ brāhmaṇagṛhapatīnāṃ bhaktābhisārastenopa­saṃk­rāntaḥ |
upasaṃkramya prajñapta evāsane niṣaṇṇaḥ |

niṣadya bhagavānāyuṣmanta­māna­ndamā­mantra­yate—gaccha ānanda, bhikṣūṇāmevamārocaya, śalākāṃ cāraya—yo yuṣmākamutsahate aśvatīrthikaṃ nāgaṃ vinetum, sa śalākāṃ gṛhṇātu iti |
evaṃ bhadantetyāyuṣmānānando bhagavataḥ pratiśrutya bhikṣusaṃghasyārocayitvā buddhapramukhe bhikṣusaṃghe śalākāṃ cārayitumārabdhaḥ |

dṛṣṭvā ca punaḥ saṃlakṣayati—kimanene śramaṇakena mama mṛtipravṛttir yena me bhavanamāgacchatīti? punaḥ saṃlakṣayati—āganturayam, āgacchatu tāvaditi |
athāyuṣmān svāgatastasya hradaṃ gatvā pātracīvarame­kānta­mupa­saṃ­kṣipya pādau prakṣālya hastau nirmādya pānīyaṃ parisrāvya jīrṇaparṇakāni samudānīya niṣadya bhaktakṛtyaṃ kartumārabdhaḥ |
aśvatīrthikena nāgenāsāvatithiriti kṛtvādhyupekṣitaḥ |
āyuṣmān svāgataḥ saṃ­lakṣayati—nā­saṃ­kṣobhitā duṣṭanāgā damathamāgacchanti |

iti tatrāśvatīrthikasya nāgasya krodhasyānu­bhāvenā­yuṣmataḥ svāgatasya ṛddhyanubhāvena mahānavabhāsaḥ prādurbhūto yaṃ dṛṣṭvā śuśumāragirīyakā brāhmaṇagṛhapatayaḥ saṃbhrāntāh itaścāmutaśca nirīkṣitumārabdhāḥ |
kathayanti—eṣa bhavanto bhagavānaśvatīrthikaṃ nāgaṃ vinayati, āgacchata paśyāma iti |

tatra bhagavān bhikṣūnāmantrayate sma—eṣo ’gro me bhikṣavo bhikṣūṇāṃ mama śrāvakāṇāmabhīkṣṇaṃ tejodhātuṃ samāpadyamānānām yaduta svāgato bhikṣuriti |
yadāśvatīrthiko nāgo vigatamadadarpaḥ kṣīṇapraharaṇaśca saṃvṛttaḥ, tadā niṣpalāyitumārabdhaḥ |
āyuṣmatā svāgatena samantato ’gnir nirmitaḥ |
aśvatīrthako nāgo yām yāṃ diśaṃ gacchati, tāṃ tāṃ diśamādīptāṃ pradīptāṃ saṃ­prajvalitām­ekaj­vālībhūtāṃ paśyati |
sa itaścāmutaśca nairmāṇikenāgninā paryākulīkṛto ’trāṇaḥ sarvamaśāntaṃ paśyati nānyatrāyuṣmata eva svāgatasya samīpaṃ śāntaṃ śītibhūtam |
sa yenāyuṣmān svāgatastenopasaṃkrāntaḥ |
upasaṃkramya āyuṣmantaṃ svāgatamidamavocat—ahaṃ bhadanta svāgata |
kiṃ māṃ viheṭhayasīti? sa kathayati—jarādharmā nāhaṃ tvāṃ viheṭhayāmi, api tu tvameva māṃ viheṭhayasi |
yadi mayā evaṃvidhā guṇagaṇā nādhigatā abhaviṣyan, adyāhaṃ tvayā nāmāvaśeṣaḥ kṛto ’bhaviṣyamiti |
sa kathayati—bhadanta svāgata, ājñāpayatu, kiṃ mayā karaṇīyam? bhadramukha, bhagavato ’ntikaṃ gatvā śaraṇagamanaśikṣāpadāni gṛhāṇeti |

athāyuṣmān svāgato ’śvatīrthanāgamādāya yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ |

ekāntaniṣaṇṇa āyuṣmān svāgato bhagavantamidamavocat—ayaṃ so ’śvatīrthiko nāga iti |
tatra bhagavānaśvatīrthikaṃ nāgamāmantrayate—tvaṃ tāvadbhadramukha, pūrvakeṇa duścaritena pratyavarāyāṃ tiryagyonau upapannaḥ |
sa tvametarhi hataprahataniviṣṭaḥ paraprāṇaharaḥ paraprāṇoparodhena jīvikāṃ kalpayasi |
itaścyutasya te kā gatirbhaviṣyati, kā upapattiḥ, ko ’bhisamparāyah? iti |
sa kathayati—bhagavan, ājñāpaya, kiṃ mayā karaṇīyamiti |
bhagavānāha—mamāntikāccharaṇaśikṣāpadāni gṛhāṇa, śuśumāragirīyakānāṃ ca brāhmaṇagṛhapatīnāmabhayamanuprayaccheti |

atha bhagavān pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaramādāya bhikṣugaṇaparivṛto bhikṣusaṃghapuraskṛto yenānāthapiṇḍadasya niveśanaṃ tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ |
tenāpi brāhmaṇenāyuṣmataḥ svāgatasya praṇīta āhāraḥ sajjīkṛtaḥ |

ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tu upātteṣveva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni vipacyante śubhānyaśubhāni ca |
na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatairapi |
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām (10)|
bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’nyatamasmin karvaṭake gṛhapatiḥ prativasati āḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogo vistīrṇaviśālaparigraho vaiśravaṇadhanapratispardhī |

asati buddhānāmutpāde pratyekabuddhā loka utpadyante hīnadīnānukampakāḥ prāntaśayanāsanabhaktā ekadakṣiṇīyā lokasya |
yāvadanyatamaḥ pratyekabuddho janapadacārikāṃ caraṃstaṃ karvaṭakamanuprāptaḥ |
so ’dhva­pari­śramād­dhātu­vaiṣamyāśca glānaḥ piṇḍārthī tadudyānaṃ praviṣṭaḥ |
sa gṛhapatistaṃ dṛṣṭvā paryavasthitaḥ |
tena pauruṣeyāṇāmājñā dattā—bhavantaḥ, niṣkāsayatainaṃ pravrajitamiti |
teṣāṃ na kaścidutsahate niṣkāsayitum |
tena gṛhapatinā bhūyasā paryavasthitena sa mahātmāa svayameva grīvāyāṃ gṛhītvā niṣkāsitaḥ, uktaśca—kroḍamallakānāṃ madhye prativaseti |
sa durbalaprāṇo bhūmau nipatitaḥ |
sa saṃlakṣayati—hato ’yaṃ tapasvī gṛhapatirupahataśca |
abhyuddhāro ’sya kartavyaḥ |
iti viditvā uparivihāyasamabhyudgamya jvalanata­pana­varṣaṇavidyotanaprātihāryāṇi kartumārabdhaḥ |
āśu pṛthagjanasya riddhirāvarjanakarī |
sa mūlanikṛtta iva drumaḥ pādayor nipatya kathayati—avatarāvatara mahādakṣiṇīya, mama duścaritapaṅkanimagnasya hastod­dhāra­manuprayaccheti |
sa tasyānugrahārthamavatīrṇaḥ |
tena tasya pūjāsat­kāraṃ kṛtvā praṇidhānaṃ kṛtam—yanmayā evaṃvidhe sadbhūtadakṣiṇīye ’pakāraḥ kṛtaḥ, mā asya karmaṇo bhāgī syām |
yattūpakāraḥ kṛtaḥ, anenāhaṃ kuśalamūlena āḍhye mahādhane mahābhoge kule jāyeyam, evaṃvidhānāṃ ca dharmāṇāṃ lābhī syām, prativiśiṣṭataraṃ cātaḥ śāstāramārāgayeyaṃ mā virāgayeyamiti |

bhagavānāha—kiṃ kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo ’sau gṛhapatireva, asau svāgato bhikṣustena kālena tena samayena |
yadanena pratyekabuddhe kārāḥ kṛtāḥ, tenāḍhye mahādhane mahābhoge kule jātaḥ |
yadapakāraḥ kṛtaḥ, tena pañcajanmaśatāni kroḍamallako jātaḥ |
yāvadetarhyapi caramabhaviko ’pi tatkroḍamallaka eva jātaḥ |
yatpraṇidhānaṃ kṛtam, tena mama śāsane pravrajya sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam |
ahamanena praty­eka­buddha­koṭi­śata­sahas­rebhyaḥ prativiśiṣṭataraḥ śāstā ārāgito na virāgitaḥ |
bhūyo ’pi kāśyape bhagavati samyaksambuddhe pravrajito babhūva |
yasya bhikṣorantike pravrajitaḥ, sa bhagavatā kāśyapena samyaksambuddhenābhīkṣṇaṃ tejodhātuṃ samāpadyamānānāmagro nirdiṣṭaḥ |
tatrānena yāvadāyurbrahmacaryaṃ cāritam, na ca kaścidguṇagaṇo ’dhigataḥ |
sa maraṇasamaye praṇidhānaṃ kartumārabdhah—yanmayā bhagavati kāśyape samyaksambuddhe ’nuttare dakṣiṇīye yādavāyurbrahmacaryaṃ caritam, na ca kaścidguṇaguṇo ’dhigataḥ, anenāhaṃ kuśalamūlena yo ’sau bhagavatā kāśyapena samyaksambuddhenottaro māṇavo vyākṛtah—bhaviṣyasi tvaṃ māṇava varṣaśatāyuṣi prajāyāṃ śākyamunirnāma tathāgato ’rhan samyaksambuddha iti, tasyāhaṃ śāsane pravrajya sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkuryām |
yathā mām upādhyāyo bhagavatā kāśyapena samyaksambuddhenābhīkṣṇaṃ tejodhātuṃ samāpadyamānānāmagro nirdiṣṭaḥ, evaṃ māmapi sa bhagavāñ śākyamuniḥ śākyādhirājo ’bhīkṣṇaṃ tejodhātuṃ samāpadyamānānāmagraṃ nirdiśediti |
tatpraṇidhānavaśādetarhi tathāgatenābhīkṣṇaṃ tejodhātuṃ samāpadyamānānāmagro nirdiṣṭaḥ |
iti hi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇāmekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekānta­śuklānāme­kānta­śuklaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ |
tasmāttarhi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmaṇyapāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣveva karmasvābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ |
ityevaṃ bho bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam |

iti śrīdivyāvadāne svāgāvadānaṃ nāma trayodaśamam |
