20. kanakavarṇāvadānam

evaṃ mayā śrutam |
ekasmin samaye bhagavāñ śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane ’nāthapiṇḍadadasyārāme mahatā bhikṣusaṃghena sārdhamardhatrayodaśabhirbhikṣu­śataiḥ |
satkṛto bhagavān gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito bhikṣu­bhirbhikṣu­ṇībhirupā­saka­irupāsikābhī rājabhī rājamātrair nānā­tīrthikaś­rama­ṇabrāhamaṇacaraka­parib­rāja­kairdevair nāgairyakṣairasurairgaruḍairgandharvaiḥ kinnarairmahorahaiḥ |
lābhī bhagavān prabhūtānāṃ praṇītānāṃ cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajya­pari­ṣkārāṇāṃ divyānāṃ mānuṣāṇāṃ ca |
taiśca bhagavānanupaliptaḥ padmamiva vāriṇā |
bhagavataścāyamevamrūpo digvidikṣu udārakalyāṇakīrtiśabdaśloko ’bhyudgatah—ityapi sa bhagavāṃstathāgato ’rhan samyaksambuddho vidyācaraṇasampannaḥ sugato lokavidanuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddho bhagavān |
sa imaṃ sadevakaṃ lokaṃ samārakaṃ sabrahmakaṃ saśramaṇabrāhmaṇīṃ prajāṃ sadevamānuṣīṃ dṛṣṭa eva dharme svayamabhijñāya sākṣātkṛtvopasampadya pravedayate |
sa dharmaṃ deśayati ādau kalyāṇaṃ madhye paryavasāne kalyāṇam |
svarthaṃ suvyañjanaṃ kevalaṃ paripūrṇaṃ pariśuddhaṃ paryavadātaṃ brahmacaryaṃ saṃprakāśayati |
tatra bhagavān bhikṣūnāmantrayate sma—sacedbhikṣavaḥ sattvā jānīyurdānasya phalaṃ dānasaṃvibhāgasya ca phalavipākam yathāhaṃ jānāmi dānasya phalaṃ dānasaṃvibhāgasya ca phalavipākam, apīdānīm yo ’sau apaścimaḥ kavalaścarama ālopaḥ, tato ’pyadatvā asaṃvibhajya na paribhuñjīran, sacellabheran dakṣiṇīyaṃ pratigrāhakam |
na caiṣāmutpannaṃ mātsaryaṃ cittaṃ paryādāya tiṣṭhet |
yasmāt tarhi bhikṣavaḥ sattvā na jānante dānasya phalaṃ dānasaṃvibhāgasya ca phalavipākam yathāhaṃ jānāmi dānasya phalaṃ dānasaṃvibhāgasya ca phalavipākam, tasmāddhetoradattvā asaṃvibhajya paribhujyante āgṛhīteṃś cetasā |
utpannaṃ caiṣāṃ mātsaryaṃ cittaṃ paryādāya tiṣṭhati |
tatkasya hetoh? bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tīte ’dhvani rājābhūt kanakavarṇo nāma abhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādikaḥ paramayā suvarṇapuṣkalatayā samanvāgataḥ |
rājā bhikṣavaḥ kanakavarṇa āḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogaḥ |
prabhūtasattvasvāpateyaḥ prabhūvittopakaraṇaḥ prabhūta­dhanadhānyahiraṇyasuvarṇa­maṇi­muktā­vaiḍūrya­śaṅkha­śilāpravā­la­raja­tajātarūpaḥ prabhūtahastyaśvagaveḍakaḥ paripūṇakośakoṣṭhāgāraḥ |
rājñaḥ kanakavarṇasya khalu bhikṣavaḥ kanakāvatī nāma rājadhānī babhūva pūrveṇa paścimena ca dvādaśa yojayānyāmena, dakṣiṇenottareṇa ca sapta yojanāni ca vistāreṇa |
ṛddhā ca sphītā ca kṣemā ca subhikṣā ca ākīrṇabahujanamanuṣyā ca ramaṇīyā ca |
rājñaḥ kanakavarṇasyāśītir nagarasahasrāṇyabhūvan |
aṣṭādaśa kulakoṭī ṛddhāni sphītāni kṣemāṇi subhikṣāṇyākīrṇa­bahu­janamanuṣyāṇi |
saptapañcāśadgrāmakoṭya ṛddhāḥ sphītāḥ kṣemāḥ subhikṣā ramaṇīyā mahājanākīrṇamanuṣyāḥ |
ṣaṣṭiḥ karvaṭasahasrāṇyabhūvann ṛddhāni sphītāni kṣemāṇi subhikṣāṇyākīrṇa­bahu­janamanuṣyāṇi |
rājñaḥ kana­kavarṇasyāṣṭādaśāmātya­sahas­rāṇya­bhūvan |
viṃ­śatist­rīsahasrāṇyantaḥ­pura­mabhūt |
rājā bhikṣavaḥ kanakavarṇo dhārmiko babhūva |
dharmeṇa rājyaṃ kārayati |
| athāpareṇa samayena rājñaḥ kanakavarṇasya ekākino rahogatasya pratisamlīnasya evaṃ cetasi cetaḥ­pari­vitarkamuda­pād­i—yannvahaṃ sarvavaṇijo ’śulkānagulmān muñceyam |

sarvajāmbudvīpakān manuṣyānakārānagulmān muñceyamiti |
atha rājā kanakavarṇo gaṇa­kamahāmātrāmātyadauvārika­pari­ṣadyānā­mantra­yate—adyāgreṇa vo grāmaṇyaḥ sarvavaṇijo ’śulkān muñcāmi, sarvajāmbudvīpakān manuṣyānakārānaśulkān muñcāmi |
tasyānenopāyena bahūni varṣāṇi rājyaṃ kārayato ’pareṇa samayena nakṣatraṃ viṣamībhūtam, dvādaśa varṣāṇi devo na varṣati |
atha brāhmaṇā lakṣaṇajñā naimittikā bhūmyantarikṣa­mantra­kuśalā nakṣatraśukragrahacariteṣu tat saṃlakṣayitvā yena rājā kanakavarṇaḥ, tenopasaṃkrāntāḥ |
apasaṃkramya rājānaṃ kana­kavarṇamidamavocan—yat­khalu devo jānīyāt—nakṣatraṃ viṣamībhūtam, dvādaśa varṣāṇi devo na varṣiṣyati |
atha rājā kanakavarṇa idamevamrūpaṃ nirghoṣaṃ śrutvā aśrūṇi pravartayati—aho bata me jāmbudvīpakā manuṣyāḥ, aho bata me jambudvīpah ṛddhaḥ sphītaḥ kṣemaḥ subhikṣo ramaṇīyo bahujanākīrṇamanuṣyo nacirādeva śūnyo bhaviṣyati rahitamanuṣyaḥ |
atha rājñaḥ kanakavarṇasya muhūrtaṃ śocitvā etadabhavat—ya ime āḍhyā mahādhanā mahābhogāḥ, te śakṣyanti yāpayitum |
ya ime daridrā alpadhanā alpānnapānabhogāḥ, te katham yāpayiṣyanti? tasyaitadabhavat—yannvahaṃ jambudvīpādannādyaṃ saṃhareyam, sarvajāmbudvīpān sattvān gaṇayeyam |
atha gaṇayitvā māpayeyam, māpayitvā sarvagrāmana­gara­nigamakarvaṭa­rāja­dhānīṣv­ekaṃ koṣṭhāgāraṃ kārayeyam |
ekaṃ koṣṭhāgāraṃ kārayitvā sarvajāmbudvīpakānāṃ manuṣyāṇāṃ samaṃ bhaktaṃ pratyarpayeyamiti |
atha kanakavarṇo rājā gaṇa­kamahāmātrāmātyadauvārikapāriṣadyānā­mantra­yate—gacchata yūyaṃ grāmaṇyaḥ, sarvajambudvīpādannādyaṃ saṃhṛtya gaṇayata, gaṇayitvā māpayata, māpayitvā sarvagrāmana­gara­nigamakarvaṭa­rāja­dhānīṣv­ekaṃ koṣṭhāgāraṃ sthāpayata |
paraṃ deveti gaṇa­kamahāmātrāmātyadauvārikapāriṣadyā rājñaḥ kanakavarṇasya pratiśrutya sarvajambudvīpādannādyaṃ gaṇayanti, gaṇayitvā māpayanti, māpayitvā sarvadrāmana­gara­nigamakarvaṭa­rāja­dhānīṣv­ekasmin koṣṭhāgāre sthāpayanti |
ekasmin koṣṭhāgāre sthāpayitvā yena rājā kanakavarṇaḥ, tenopasaṃkrāntāḥ |
upasaṃkramya rājānaṃ kana­kavarṇamidamavocat—yat khalu deva jānīyāh—sarvagrāmana­gara­nigamakarvaṭa­rāja­dhānīṣvannādyaṃ saṃhṛtam, saṃhṛtya gaṇitam, gaṇayitvā māpitam, māpayitvā sarvagrāmana­gara­nigama­rāja­dhānīṣv­ekasmin koṣṭhāgāre sathāpitam yasyedānīṃ devaḥ kālaṃ manyate |
atha rājā kanakavarṇaḥ saṃ­kh­yā­gaṇa­kalipikapauruṣeyānā­mantra­yitvā etadavocat—gacchata yūyaṃ grāmaṇyaḥ, sarvajāmbudvīpakān manuṣyān gaṇayata, gaṇayitvā grāmaṇyaḥ sarvajāmbudvīpakānāṃ manuṣyāṇāṃ samaṃ bhaktaṃ prayacchata |
paraṃ deveti saṃ­kh­yā­gaṇa­kalipikapauruṣeyā rājñaḥ kanakavarṇasya pratiśrutya sarvajāmbudvīpakān manuṣyān gaṇayanti, saṃgaṇya rājānaṃ kanakavarṇamādau kṛtvā sarvajāmbudvīpakānāṃ manuṣyāṇāṃ samaṃ bhaktaṃ prajñapayanti |
te yāpayantyekādaśavarṣāṇi, dvādaśavarṣaṃ na yāpayanti |
nirgato dvādaśasya varṣasyaiko māso yāvadbahavaḥ strīpuruṣadārakadārikā jighatsitāḥ pipāsitāḥ kālaṃ kurvanti |
ten khalu punaḥ samayena sarvajambudvīpādannādyaṃ parikṣīṇamanyatra rājñaḥ kanakavarṇasyaikā mānikā bhaktasyāvaśiṣṭā |

tena khalu samayena anyata­maścatvāriṃ­śat­kalpasamprasthito bodhisattva imāṃ sahālokadhātumanuprāpto babhūva |
adrākṣīd bodhisattvo ’nyatarasmin banaṣaṇḍe putraṃ mātrā sārdhaṃ vipratipadyamanam |
dṛṣṭvā ca punarasyaitadabhavat—kliśyanti bateme sattvāḥ, saṃkliśyanti bateme sattvāḥ, yatra hi nāma asyāmeva nava māsān kukṣau uṣitvā, asyā eva stanau pītvā, atraiva kālaṃ kariṣyati iti |
alaṃ me īdṛśaiḥ sattva­iradhārmikaira­dharma­rā­garak­tairmithyādṛṣṭakairviṣamalobhābhi­bhūta­iramātṛrajñaiśrāmaṇyaraibrāhmaṇyairakule jyeṣṭhāpacāyakaiḥ |
ka utsahata īdṛśānāṃ sattvānāmarthāya bodhisattvacaryāṃ caritum? yannvahaṃ svake kārye pratipadyeyam |
atha bohisattvo yenānyataradvṛkṣamūlaṃ tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ |
upasaṃkramya tasmin vṛkṣamūle niṣaṇṇaḥ |
paryaṅkamābhujya ṛjukāyaṃ praṇidhāya pratimukhaṃ smṛtimupasthāpya pañcasū­pād­ānaskandheṣūdayavyayānudarśī viharati yadutedaṃ rūpam, ayaṃ rūpasamudayaḥ, ayaṃ rūpasyāstaṃgamaḥ, iyaṃ vedanā, iyaṃ saṃjñā, ime saṃkrārāḥ, idaṃ vijñānam, ayaṃ vijñānasamudayaḥ, ayaṃ vijñānasyāstaṃgama iti |
sa evaṃ pañcasū­pād­ānaskandheṣūdayavyayānudarśī viharannacirādeva yatkiṃcit samudayadharmakaṃ tat sarvaṃ nirodhadharmakamiti viditvā tatraiva pratyekāṃ bodhimadhigatavān |
atha bhagavān pratyekabuddho yathāprāptānavalokya tasyāṃ velāyāṃ gāthāṃ bhāṣate— saṃsevamānasya bhavanti snehāḥ snehānvayaṃ saṃbhavatīha duḥkham |
ādīnavaṃ snehagataṃ viditvā ekaścaret khaṅgaviṣāṇakalpaḥ (1)|

atha tasya bhagavataḥ praty­eka­buddhas­yaitadabhavat—bahūnāṃ me sattvānāmarthāya duṣkarāṇi cīrṇāni, na ca kasyacit sattvasya hitaṃ kṛtam |
kamadyāhamanukampeyam, kasyāhamadya piṇḍapātamāhṛtya paribhuñjīya? atha bhagavān pratyekabuddho divyena cakṣuṣā viśuddhenātikrāntamānuṣeṇa sarvāvantamimaṃ jambudvīpaṃ samantādanuvilokayannadrākṣīt sa bhagavān pratyekabuddhaḥ sarvajambudvīpādannādyaṃ parikṣīṇam, anyatra rājñaḥ kanakavarṇasyaikā mānikā bhaktasyāvaśiṣṭā |
tasyaitadabhavat—yannvahaṃ rājānaṃ kanakavarṇamanukampeyam |
yannvahaṃ rājñaḥ kanakavarṇasya niveśanāt piṇḍapātamahṛtya paribhuñjīya |
atha bhagavān pratyekabuddhastat eva ṛddhyā vihāyasamabhyudgamya dṛśyatā kāyena śakuniriva ṛddhyā yena kanakāvatī rājadhānī tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ |
tena khalu samayena rājā kanakavarṇa upariprāsādatalagato ’bhūt pañcamātrairamātya­sahas­raiḥ parivṛtaḥ |
adrākṣīdanyatamo mahāmātrastaṃ bhagavantaṃ pratyekabuddhaṃ dūrata evāgacchantam |
dṛṣṭvā ca punar­mahā­mātrānā­mantra­yate—paś­yata paśyata grāmaṇyaḥ |
dūrata eva lohitapakṣaḥ śakunta ihāgacchati |
dvitīyo mahāmātra evamāha—naiṣa grāmaṇyo lohitapakṣaḥ śakuntaḥ, rākṣasa eva ojohāra ihāgacchati |
eṣo ’smākaṃ bhakṣayiṣyati |
atha rājā kanakavarṇa ubhābhyāṃ pāṇibhyāṃ mukhaṃ saṃparimārjya mahā­mātrānā­mantra­yate—naiṣa grāmaṇyo lohitapakṣaḥ śakuntaḥ, na ca rākṣasa ojohāraḥ |
ṛṣireṣo ’smā­kama­nukampayehāgacchati |
atha sa bhagavān pratyekabuddho rājñaḥ kanakavarṇasya prāsāde pratyaṣṭhāt |

atha rājā kanakavarṇastaṃ bhagavantaṃ praty­eka­buddha­mutthāyāsanāt pratyudgamya pādau śirasā vanditvā prajñapta evāsane niṣīdayati |
atha rājā kanakavarṇastaṃ bhagavantaṃ praty­eka­buddha­midamavocat—kimartham ṛṣe ihābhyāgamanam? bhojanārthaṃ mahārāja |
evamukte rājā kanakavarṇaḥ prārodīt |
aśrūṇi pravartayannevamāha—aho me dāridryam, aho dāridryam, yatra hi nāma jambudvīpaiśvaryādhipatyaṃ kārayitvā ekasyāpi ṛṣerasamarthaḥ piṇḍapātaṃ pratipādayitum |
atha yā kanakāvatyāṃ rājadhānyāmadhyuṣitā devatā, sā rājñaḥ kanakavarṇasya purastādgāthāṃ bhāṣate— kiṃ duḥkhaṃ dāridryaṃ kiṃ duḥkhataraṃ tadeva dāridryam |
maraṇasamaṃ dāridryam (2)|
atha rājā kanakavarṇaḥ koṣṭhāgārikaṃ puruṣamāmantrayate—asti bhoḥ puruṣa, mama niveśane kiṃcidbhaktam, yadahamasya ṛṣeḥ pradāsyāmi? sa evamāha—yat khalu deva jānīyāh—sarvajambudvī­pādan­nādyaṃ parikṣīṇam, anyatra devasyaikā mānikā bhaktasyāvaśiṣṭā |
atha rājñaḥ kana­kavarṇasyaitadabhavat—sacet paribhuñje, jīviṣye |
atha na paribhokṣye, mariṣye |
tasyaitadabhavat—yadi paribhokṣye, yadi vā na paribhokṣye, avaśyaṃ mayā kālaḥ kartavyaḥ |
alaṃ me jīvitena |
kathaṃ nāmehedṛśa ṛṣiḥ śīlavān kalyāṇadharmā mama niveśane ’dya yathādhautena pātreṇa nirgamiṣyati? atha rājā kanakavarṇo gaṇa­kamahāmātrāmātyadauvārikapāriṣadyān saṃ­nipātyaivamavocat—anumodata yūyaṃ grāmaṇyaḥ, ayaṃ rājñaḥ kanakavarṇasyāpaścima odanātisargaḥ |
anena kuśalamūlena sarvajāmbudvīpakānāṃ manuṣyāṇāṃ dāridryasamucchedaḥ syāt |
atha rājā kanakavarṇastasya maharṣestat pātraṃ gṛhītvā ekāṃ mānikāṃ bhaktasya pātre prakṣipya ubhābhyāṃ pāṇibhyāṃ pātraṃ gṛhītvā jānubhyāṃ nipatya tasya bhagavataḥ pratyekabuddhasya dakṣiṇe pāṇau pātraṃ pratiṣṭhāpayati |
dharmatā punarbhagavatāṃ pratyekabuddhānāṃ kāyikī dharmadeśanā na vācikī |
atha bhagavān pratyekabuddho rājñaḥ kanakavarṇasyāntikāt piṇḍapātramādāya tat eva ṛddhyā uparivihāyasā prakrāntaḥ |
atha rājā kanakavarṇaḥ prāñjalirbhūtvā tāvadanimiṣaṃ prekṣamāṇo ’sthāt, yāvaccakṣuṣpathādatikrānta iti |
atha rājā kanakavarṇo gaṇa­kamahāmātrāmātyadauvārikapāriṣadyānā­mantra­yate—gacchata grāmaṇyaḥ svakasvakāni niveśanāni |
mā ihaiva prāsāde jighatsāpipāsābhyāṃ sarva eva kālaṃ kariṣyatha |
ta evamāhuh—yadā devasya śrīsaubhāgyasampadāsīt, tadā vayaṃ devena sārdhaṃ krīḍatā ramatā kathaṃ punarvayamidānīṃ devaṃ paścime kāle paścime samaye parityakṣyāma iti |
atha rājā kanakavarṇaḥ prārodīt |
aśrūṇi pravartayati |
aśrūṇi saṃparimārjya gaṇa­kamahāmātrāmātyadauvārikapāriṣadyānidamavocat—gacchata grāmaṇyo yathāsvakasvakāni niveśanāni |
mā ihaiva prāsāde jighatsāpipāsābhyāṃ sarva eva kālaṃ kariṣyatha |
evamuktā gaṇa­kamahāmātrāmātyadauvārikapāriṣadyāḥ prarudanto ’śrūṇi pravartayanto ’śrūṇi saṃparimārjya yena rājā kana­kavarṇastenopa­saṃk­rāntāḥ |
upasaṃkramya rājñaḥ kanakavarṇasya pādau śirasā vanditvā añjaliṃ kṛtvā rājñaḥ kana­kavarṇasyaitadūcuh—kṣantavyaṃ te yadasmābhiḥ kiṃcidaparāddham |
adyāsmākaṃ devasyāpaścimaṃ darśanam |

tadyathā tena bhagavatā pratyekabuddhena sa piṇḍapātraḥ paribhuktaḥ, atha tasminneva kṣaṇe samantāccatasṛṣu dikṣu catvāryabhrapaṭalāni vyutthitāni, śītalāśca vāyavo vātumārabdhāḥ, ye jambudvīpādaśuciṃ vyapanayanti, meghāśca pravarṣayantaḥ pāṃśūñ śamayanti |
atha tasminneva divase dvitīye ’rdhabhāge vividhasya khādanīyabhojanīyasya varṣaṃ pravarṣati |
idamevamrūpaṃ bhojanamodanasaktavaḥ kulmāṣamatsyamāṃsam, idamevamrūpaṃ khādanīyaṃ mūlakhādanīyaṃ skandhakhādanīyaṃ patrakhādanīyaṃ puṣpakhādanīyaṃ phalakhādanīyaṃ tilakhādanīyaṃ khaṇḍaśarkaraguḍakhādanīyaṃ piṣṭakhādanīyam |
atha rājā kanakavarṇo hṛṣṭatuṣṭah udagra āttamanāḥ pramuditaḥ prītisaumanasyajāto gaṇa­kamahāmātrāmātyadauvārikapārṣadyānā­mantra­yate—paśyatha yūyaṃ grāmaṇyaḥ, adyaiva tasyaikapiṇḍapātadānasyāṅkuraḥ prādurbhūtaḥ |
phalamanyadbhaviṣyati |

atha dvitīye divase saptāhaṃ dhānyavarṣaṃ pravarṣanti, tadyathā—tilataṇḍulā mudgamāṣā yavā godhūmamasūrāḥ śālayaḥ |
saptāhaṃ sarpivarṣaṃ pravarṣanti, saptāhaṃ karpāsavarṣaṃ pravarṣanti, saptāhaṃ nānāvidhadūṣyavarṣaṃ pravarṣanti, saptāhaṃ saptaratnānāṃ varṣaṃ pravarṣanti, suvarṇasya rūpyasya vaiḍūryasya sphaṭikasya lohitamukteraśmagarbhasya musāragalvasya |
sarvasya rājñaḥ kanakavarṇasyānubhāvena jāmbudvīpakānāṃ manuṣyāṇāṃ dāridryasamucchedo babhūva |

syāt khalu bhikṣavo yuṣmākaṃ kāṅkṣā vimatirvā anyaḥ sa tena kālena tena samayena rājā kanakavarṇo babhūva |
na khalvevaṃ draṣṭavyam |
ahaṃ sa tena kālena tena samayena rājā kanakavarṇo babhūva |
tadanena bhikṣavaḥ paryāyeṇa veditavyam |
sacedbhikṣavaḥ sattvā jānīyurdānasya phalaṃ dānasaṃvibhāgasya ca phalavipākam—apīdānīm yo ’sau apaścimakaḥ kavalaścarama ālopaḥ, tato ’pyadattvā asaṃvibhajya na paribhuñjīran, sacellabheran dakṣiṇīyaṃ pratigrāhakam |

na naśyate pūrvakṛtaṃ śubhāśubhaṃ na naśyate sevanaṃ piṇḍatānām |
na naśyate āryajaneṣu bhāṣitaṃ kṛtaṃ kṛtajñeṣu na jātu naśyati (3)|
sukṛtaṃ śobhanaṃ karma duṣkṛtaṃ vāpyaśobhanam |
asti caitasya vipāko avaśya dāsyate phalam (4)|

āttamanasaste bhikṣavo bhikṣuṇ­yupāsakopāsikā­deva­nāgayakṣagandharvāsuragaruḍakinna­ramahoragādayaḥ sarvāvatī ca parṣadbhagavato bhāṣitamabhyanandan |

iti śrīdivyāvadāne kanakavarṇāvadānaṃ viṃśatimam |
