buddho bhagavān rājagṛhe viharati veṇuvane kalandakanivāpe |
ācaritamāyuṣmato mahāmaudgalyāyanasya kālena kālaṃ narakacārikāṃ carituṃ tiryakcārikāṃ carituṃ pretacārikāṃ devacārikāṃ manuṣyacārikāṃ caritum |
sa yāni tāni nārakāṇāṃ sattvānāmutpāṭānupāṭanacchedanabhedanādīni duḥkhāni, tiraścāmanyonyabhakṣaṇādīni, pretānāṃ kṣuttṛṣādīni, devānāṃ cyavanapatanavikiraṇavidhvaṃ­sanādīni, manuṣyāṇāṃ paryeṣṭicyasanādīni duḥkhāni, tāni dṛṣṭvā jambudvīpamāgatya catasṛṇāṃ parṣadāmārocayati |
yasya kasyacit sārdhaṃvihārī antevāsī vā anabhirato brahmacaryaṃ carati, sa tamādāya yenāyuṣmān mahā­maudgalyāyanastenopa­saṃk­rāmati, āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyana enaṃ samyagavavadiṣyati, anuśāsiṣyatīti |
tamāyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ samyagavavadati samyaganuśāsti |
evamaparamaparaṃ te āyuṣmatā mahāmaudgalyāyanena samyagavavāditāḥ samyaganuśiṣṭā abhiratā brahmacaryaṃ caranti, uttare ca viśeṣamadhigacchanti |
tena khalu samayenāuṣmān mahā­maudgalyāyanaścatasṛbhiḥ parṣadbhirākīrṇo viharati bhikṣu­bhirbhikṣu­ṇībhirupā­saka­irupāsikābhiśca |
jānakāḥ pṛcchakā buddhā bhagavantaḥ |
pṛcchati buddho bhagavānāyuṣmantamānandam |
sa kathayati—ācaritaṃ bhadanta āyuṣmato mahāmaudgalyāyanasya kālena kālaṃ narakacārikāṃ carituṃ tiryakcarikāṃ pretacārikāṃ devacārikāṃ manuṣyacārikāṃ caritum |

ayaṃ bhadanta heturayaṃ pratyayo yenāyuṣmān mahā­maudgalyāyanaścatasṛbhiḥ parṣadbhirākīrṇo viharati bhikṣu­bhikṣuṇ­yupāsakopāsikābhiḥ |
na sarvatra ānanda maudgalyāyano bhikṣurbhaviṣyati maudgalyāyanasadṛśo vā |
tasmād dvārakoṣṭhake pañcagaṇḍakaṃ cakraṃ kārayitavyam |
uktaṃ bhagavatā dvārakoṣṭhake pañcagaṇḍakaṃ cakraṃ kārayitavyamiti |
bhikṣavo na jānate kīdṛśaṃ kārayitavyamiti |
bhagavānāha—pañca gatayaḥ kartavyā narakāstiryañcaḥ pretā devā manuṣyāśca |
tatrādhastāt narakāḥ kartavyāḥ, tiryañcaḥ pretāśca, upariṣṭāt devā manuṣyāśca |
catvāro dvīpāḥ kartavyāḥ pūrvavideho ’paragodānīya uttarakururjambudvīpaśca |
madhye rāgadveṣamohāḥ kartavyāḥ, rāgaḥ pārāvatākāreṇa, dveṣo bhujaṅgākāreṇa, mohaḥ sūkarākāreṇa |
buddhapratimāścaitannirvāṇa­maṇḍala­mu­pada­rśayantyaḥ kartavyāḥ |
anupapādukāḥ sattvā ghaṭīyantraprayogeṇa cyavamānā upapadyamānāśca kartavyāḥ |
sāmantakena dvādaśāṅgaḥ pratītyasamutpādo ’nulomapratilomaḥ kartavyaḥ |
sarvamanityatayā grastaṃ kartavyam, gāthādvayaṃ ca lekhayitavyam— ārabhadhvaṃ niṣkrāmata yujyadhvaṃ buddhaśāsane |

dhunīta mṛtyunaḥ sainyaṃ naḍāgāramiva kuñjaraḥ (1)|
yo hyasmin dharmavinaye apramattaścariṣyati |
prahāya jātisaṃsāraṃ duḥkhasyāntaṃ kariṣyati (2)|

uktaṃ bhagavatā dvārakoṣṭhake pañcagaṇḍakaṃ cakraṃ kārayitavyamiti bhikṣubhiḥ kāritam |
brāhmaṇagṛhapataya āgatya pṛcchanti—ārya, kimidaṃ likhitamiti? te kathayanti—bhadramukhāḥ, vayamapi na jānīma iti |
bhagavānāha—dvārakoṣṭhake bhikṣuruddeṣṭavyo ya āgatāgatānāṃ brāhmaṇagṛhapatīnāṃ darśayati |
uktaṃ bhagavatā bhikṣuruddeṣṭavya iti |
te aviśeṣeṇoddiśanti bālānapi mūḍhānapi avyaktānapi akuśalānapi |
te ātmanā na jānate, kutaḥ punarāgatānāṃ brāhmaṇagṛhapatīnāṃ darśayiṣyanti? bhagavānāha—pratibalo bhikṣuruddeṣṭavya iti |

tena sadṛśāt kulāt kalatramānītam |
sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati |
tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ putro jātaḥ |
tasya trīṇi saptakāny­eka­viṃ­śatidivasān vistareṇa jātasya jātimahaṃ kṛtvā kulasadṛśaṃ nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpitam |
sa patnīmāmantrayate—bhadre, jāto ’smākam ṛṇaharo dhanaharaḥ |
tadgacchāmi, paṇyamādāya mahāsamudramavatarāmīti |
sā kathayati—āryaputra, evaṃ kuruṣveti |
sa suhṛtsambandhibāndhavānā­mantra­yitvā antarjanaṃ ca samāśvāsya mahāsamudragamanīyaṃ paṇyamādāya divasatithimuhūrtena mahāsamudramavatīrṇaḥ |
tatraiva ca nidhanamupayātaḥ |
tasya patnyā sa dārako jñātibalena hastabalena pālitaḥ poṣitaḥ saṃvardhito lipyāmupanyasto lipyakṣareṣu ca kṛtāvī saṃvṛttaḥ |
sa vayaskareṇa sārdhaṃ veṇuvanaṃ gato vihāraṃ praviṣṭaḥ paśyati dvārakoṣṭhake pañcagaṇḍakaṃ cakramabhilikhitam |
sa pṛcchati—ārya, kimidamabhilikhitamiti? bhikṣuḥ kathayati—bhadramukha, etāḥ pañca gatayo narakāstiryañcaḥ pretā devā manuṣyāśca |
ārya, kimebhiḥ karma kṛtam yenaivaṃvidhāni duḥkhāni praryanubhavantīti? sa kathayati—ete prāṇātipātikā adattādāyikāḥ kāmamithyācārikā mṛṣāvādikāḥ paiśunikāḥ pāruṣikāḥ saṃbhinnapralāpikā abhidhyālavo vyāpannacittā mithyādṛṣṭikāḥ |
tadebhirete daśākuśalāḥ karmapathā atyarthamāsevitā bhāvitā bahulīkṛtāḥ, yena evaṃvidhāni duḥkhānyutpāṭānupāṭacchedanabhedanādīni pratyanubhavanti |

ebhiranyaiḥ kiṃ karma kṛtam yena evaṃvidhāni duḥkhāni pratyanubhavanti? duḥkhānyanyonyabhakṣaṇādīni pratyanubhavanti |
ārya, etadapi gatam |
ebhiranyaiḥ kiṃ karma kṛtam yena evaṃvidhāni duḥkhāni pratyanubhavanti? bhadramukha, ete ’pi matsariṇa āsan kuṭukuñcakā āgṛhītapariṣkārāḥ |
tattena mātsaryeṇāsevitena bhāvitena bahulīkṛtena evaṃvidhāni duḥkhāni kṣuttṛṣādīni duḥkhāni pratyanubhavanti |
ārya, etadapi gatam |
ebhiranyaiḥ kiṃ karma kṛtam yena evaṃvidhāni sukhāni pratyanubhavanti? bhadramukha, ete prāṇātipātāt prativiratā adattādānāt kāma­mithyācārānmṛṣāvādāt paiśunyāt pāruṣyāt saṃ­bhinnapralā­pāda­nabhidhyāpannacittāḥ samyagdṛṣṭayaḥ |
tadebhirete daśa kuśalāḥ karmapathā atyarthamāsevitā bhāvitā bahulīkṛtāḥ, yena evaṃvidhāni divyastrīlalitavimānod­yāna­sukhāni pratyanubhavanti |
ārya, etadapi gatam |
ebhiranyaiḥ kiṃ karma kṛtam yena sukhāni pratyanubhavanti? bhadramukha, ebhirapi daśa kuśalāḥ karmapathāstanutarā mṛdutarāścāsevitā bhāvitā bahulīkṛtāḥ, yena evaṃvidhāni hastyaśvarathānnapānaśayanāsanastrīlalitod­yāna­sukhāni pratyanubhavanti |
ārya, āsāṃ pañcānāṃ gatīnām yā etāstisro gatayo narakāstiryañcaḥ pretāśca, etā mahyaṃ na rocante |
ye tu ete devā manuṣyāśca ete rocete |
tatkathamete daśa kuśalāḥ karmapathāḥ samādāya vartayitavyāh? bhadramukha, svākhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajya saced dṛṣṭa eva dharme ājñāmārāgayiṣyasi, eṣa eva te ’nto duḥkhasya |
atha sāvaśeṣasamyojanaḥ kālaṃ kariṣyasi, deveṣūpapatsyase |
uktaṃ hi bhagavatā—pañcānuśaṃsān samanupaśyatā piṇḍatenālameva pravrajyādhimuktena bhavitum |
katamāni pañca? āveṇikā ime svārthā anuprāpto bhaviṣyāmīti saṃpaśyatā piṇḍatenālameva pravrajyādhimuktena bhavitum |
yeṣāmahaṃ dāsaḥ preṣyo nirdeśyo bhujiṣyo nayena kāmaṃgamaḥ, teṣāṃ pūjyaśca bhaviṣyāmi praśaṃsyaśceti saṃpaśyatā piṇḍatena alameva pravrajyādhimuktena bhavitum |
anuttaram yogakṣemaṃ nirvāṇamanuprāpsyāmīti saṃpaśyatā piṇḍatena alameva pravrajyādhimuktena bhavitum |
anuttaraṃ vā yogakṣemaṃ nirvāṇamanuprāpnuvato ’nāpattikasya sato deeveṣūpa­pattirbhaviṣyatīti saṃpaśyatā piṇḍatena alameva pravrajyādhimuktena bhavitum |
anekaparyāyeṇa pravrajyā varṇitā buddhaiśca buddhaśrāvakaiśca |
ārya, śobhanam |
kiṃ tatra pravrajyāyāṃ kriyate? bhadramukha, yāvajjīvaṃ brahmacaryaṃ caryate |
ārya, na śakyametat |
anyo ’sti upāyah? bhadramukha, asti, upāsako bhava |
ārya, kiṃ tatra kriyate? bhadraṃkha, yāvajjīvaṃ prāṇātipātāt prativiratiḥ saṃrakṣyā, adattādānāt kāmamithyācārāt surāmaireyamadyapramādasthānāt prativiratiḥ saṃrakṣyā |
ārya, etadapi na śakyate |
anyamupāyaṃ kathayeti |
bhadramukha, buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ bhojaya |
ārya, kiyadbhiḥ kārṣāpaṇairbuddhapramukho bhikṣusaṃgho bhojyate? bhadramukha, pañcabhiḥ kārṣāpaṇaśataiḥ |

sa tasya pādabhivandanaṃ kṛtvā prakrāntaḥ |
yena svaṃ niveśanaṃ tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ |
upasaṃkramya mātaramidamavocat—amba, adyāhaṃ veṇuvanaṃ gataḥ |
tatra mayā dvārakoṣṭhake pañcagaṇḍakaṃ cakramabhilikhitaṃ dṛṣṭam |
tatra pañca gatayo narakāstiryañcaḥ pretā devā manuṣyāśca |
tatra nārakā utpāṭanupāṭanacchedabhedanādīni duḥkhāni pratyanubhavanti |
tiryañcaścānyonyabhakṣaṇādīni |
pretāḥ kṣuttṛṣādīni |
devā divyastrīlalitod­yāna­vi­māna­sukhāni pratyanubhavanti |
manuṣyā hastyaśvarathānnapānaśayanāsanastrīlalitodyānāni pratyanubhavanti |
āsāṃ mama tisro gatayo nābhipretāḥ, dve abhiprete |
tatkimicchasi tvaṃ māṃ deveṣūpapadyamānam? putra, sarvasattvānicchāmi deveṣūpapadyamānān prāgeva tvām |
amba, yadyevam, prayaccha pañca kārṣāpaṇaśatāni |
buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ bhojayāmi |
putra, mayā tvaṃ jñātibalena hastabalena cāpyāyitaḥ poṣitaḥ saṃvardhitaḥ |
kuto me pañcānāṃ kārṣāpaṇaśatānāṃ vibhavah? amba, yadi nāsti, bhṛtikayā karma karomi |
putra, tvaṃ sukumāraḥ |
na śakyasi bhṛtikayā karma kartum |
amba gacchāmi, śakyāmi |
putra, yadi śakyo ’si, gaccha |
sa tayā anujñāto bhṛtakavīthīṃ gatvā avasthitaḥ |
brāhmaṇagṛhapatayo ’nyān bhṛtakapuruṣān gṛhṇanti, taṃ na kaścit pṛcchati |
sa tatra divasamatināmya vikāle gṛhaṃ gataḥ |
sa mātrā pṛṣṭah—putra, kṛtaṃ te bhṛtikayā karma? amba, kiṃ karomi? na māṃ kaścit pṛcchati |
putra, na evaṃvidhā bhṛtakapuruṣā bhavanti |
putra, sphaṭitaparuṣā rūkṣakeśā malinavastranivasanāḥ |
yadyavaśyaṃ tvayā bhṛtikayā karma kartavyam, īdṛśaṃ veṣamāsthāya bhṛtakavīthīṃ gatvā tiṣṭha |
amba, śobhanam |
evaṃ karomi |
so ’parasmin divase tādṛśaṃ veṣamāsthāya bhṛtakavīthīṃ gatvā avasthitaḥ |
yāvadanyatarasya gṛhapatergṛhamuttiṣṭhate |
sa bhṛtakānāmarthe vīthīṃ gataḥ |
tena taṃ pratyākhyāya anye bhṛtakapuruṣā gṛhītāḥ |
sa kathayati—gṛhapate, ahamapi bhṛtikayā karma karomīti |
gṛhapatiḥ kathayati—putra, tvaṃ sukumāraḥ, na śakṣyasi bhṛtikayā karma kartum |
tāt, kiṃ tvaṃ pūrvaṃ bhṛtiṃ dadāsi, āhosvit paścāt? |
tāt, adya tātvat karma karomi |
yadi toṣayiṣyāmi, dāsyasi bhṛtimiti |
sa saṃlakṣayati—śobhanameṣa kathayati |
adya tāvat jijñāsyāmi yadi śakṣyati karma kartum, dāsyāmi |
na śakṣyati, na dāsyāmīti viditvā kathayati—putra āgaccha, gacchāma iti |
sa tena gṛhaṃ nītaḥ |
te ’nyabhṛtakāḥ śāṭhyena karma kurvanti |
sa tvaritatvaritaṃ karma karoti |
tāṃśca bhṛtakān samanuśāsti |
vayaṃ tāvat pūrvakeṇa duścaritena daridragṛheṣūpapannāḥ |
tadyadi śāṭhyena karma kariṣyāmaḥ, itaścyutānāṃ kā gatibhaviṣyati? te kathayanti—bhāgineya, tvaṃ navadāntaḥ |
sthānametadvidyate yadasmākaṃ pṛṣṭhato gamiṣyasi |
āgaccha paśyāmaḥ |
sa lokākhyāyikāyāṃ kuśalaḥ |
teṃs teṣāṃ tādṛśī lokākhyānakathā prastutā, yāṃ śrutvā te bhṛtakapuruṣā ākṣiptāḥ |
tasyātisvareṇa gacchato ’nupadaṃ gacchanti, mā lokākhyāyikāṃ na śroṣyāma iti |
tasmin divase tairbhṛtakapuruṣaistaddviguṇaṃ karma kṛtam |
so ’dhiṣṭhāyakapuruṣaṃ pṛcchati—bhoḥ puruṣa, kiṃ tvayā apare bhṛtakā gṛhītāh? ārya, na gṛhītāḥ |
atha kasmādadya dviguṇaṃ karma kṛtam? tena yathāvṛttamārocitam |
śrutvā gṛhapatistasya dārakasya dviguṇāṃ bhṛtiṃ dātumārabdhaḥ |
sa kathayati—tāt, kiṃ dvidaivasikāṃ bhṛtiṃ dadāsīti? sa kathayati—putra, na dvidaivasikāṃ dadāmi, api tu prasanno ’haṃ prasannādhikāraṃ karomīti |
sa kathayati—tāt, yadi tvaṃ mamābhiprasannaḥ, yāvat tava gṛhe karma kartavyaṃ tāvat tavaiva haste tiṣṭhatu |
putra evaṃ bhavatu |
yadā tasya gṛhapatestadgṛhaṃ parisamāptam, tadā asau dārako bhṛtiṃ gaṇayitumārabdho yāvat pañca kārṣāpaṇaśatāni na paripūryante |
sa roditumārabdhaḥ |
sa gṛhapatiḥ kathayati—putra, kiṃ rodiṣi? māsi mayā kiṃcit vyaṃsitaḥ |
tāt, mahātmā tvam, kiṃ māṃ vyaṃsayiṣyasi? api tu ahameva mandabhāgyaḥ |
mayā pañcānāṃ kārṣāpaṇaśatānāmarthāya bhṛtikayā karma prārabdhaṃ buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ bhojayiṣyāmi, tato deveṣūpapatsyāmīti |
tāni na paripūrṇāni |
punarapi mayā anyatra bhṛtikayā karma kartavyamiti |
sa gṛhapatirbhūyasā mātrayā atiprasannaḥ |
sa kathayati—putra, yadyevam, ahaṃ pūrayāmi |
tāt, mā deveṣūpapatsye |
putra, abhiśraddadhāsi tvaṃ bhagavatah? tāt abhiśraddadhe |
putra gaccha, bhagavantaṃ pṛccha |
yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ |
upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ |
sa gṛhapatiputro bhagavantamidamavocat—bhagavan, mayā pañcānāṃ kārṣāpaṇaśatānāmarthāya bhagavantaṃ saśrāvakasaṃghaṃ bhojayiṣyāmītyamukasya gṛhapaterbhṛtikayā karma kṛtam |
tāni mama na paripūrṇāni |
sa gṛhapatiḥ paripūrayati |
bhagavan kim? āha—vatsa gṛhāṇa, śrāddhaḥ sa gṛhapatiḥ |
bhagavan, mā deveṣu nopapatsye? vatsa upapatsyase, gṛhāṇa |
sa parituṣṭo bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā bhagavato ’ntikāt prakrānto yena sa gṛhapatistenopasaṃkrāntaḥ |
upasaṃkramya gṛhapaterantikāt pañca kārṣāpaṇaśatāni gṛhītvā mātuḥ sakāśaṃ gataḥ |
kathayati—amba, etāni pañca kārṣāpaṇaśatāni |
bhaktaṃ sajjīkuru |
buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ bhojayiṣyāmīti |
sā kathayati—putra, na mama bhāṇḍopaskaro na śayanāsanam |
sa eva gṛhapatirvistīrṇabhāṇḍopaskaraḥ śrāddhaśca |
tameva gatvā prārthaya |
śaknotyasau saṃpādayitumiti |
sa tasya sakāśaṃ gataḥ śiraḥpraṇāmaṃ kṛtvā kathayati—tvayaiva etāni pañca kārṣāpaṇaśatāni dattāani |
asmākaṃ gṛhe na bhāṇḍopaskaro nāpi śayanāsanam |
tadarhasi mamānukampayā bhaktaṃ sajjīkartum |
ahamāgatya svahastena buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ bhojayiṣyāmīti |
gṛhapatiḥ saṃlakṣayati—mamedaṃ gṛhamacirotthitaṃ buddhapramukhena bhikṣusaṃghena paribhuktaṃ bhaviṣyati, pratijāgarmi |
iti viditvā kathayati—putra, śobhanam |
sthāpayitvā kārṣāpaṇān gaccha, śvo buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣu­saṃ­ghamupani­mantraya |
ahamāhāraṃ sajjīkaromīti |
sa saṃjātasaumanasyaḥ śiraḥpraṇāmaṃ kṛtvā prakrānto yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ |
upasaṃkramya vṛddhānte sthitvā kathayati—so ’haṃ buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣu­saṃ­ghamupani­mantra­yāmīti |
adhivāsayati bhagavāṃstasya gṛhapatiputrasya tūṣṇībhāvena |
atha sa gṛhapatiputro bhagavatastūṣṇī­bhāvenā­dhivāsanāṃ viditvā bhagavato ’ntikāt prakrāntaḥ |

tenāpi gṛhapatinā tāmeva rātriṃ śuciṃ praṇītaṃ khādanīyaṃ bhojanīyaṃ samudānīya kālyamevotthāya gṛhaṃ saṃmārjitam |
sukumārī gomayakārṣī dattā, āsanaprajñaptiḥ kāritā, udakamaṇayaḥ pratiṣṭhāpitāḥ |
tenāpi gṛhapatiputreṇa gatvā bhagavata ārocitam—samayo bhadanta, sajjaṃ bhaktam yasyedānīṃ bhagavān kālaṃ manyate iti |
atha bhagavān pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaramādāya bhikṣugaṇaparivṛto bhikṣusaṃghapuraskṛto yena tasya gṛhapater niveśanaṃ tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ |
ṣaḍvargīyāḥ pṛcchanti—kenāayaṃ buddhapramukho bhikṣusaṃgha upanimantrita iti? apare kathayanti—amukena gṛhapatiputreṇeti |
te parasparaṃ saṃjalpaṃ kurvanti—nandopananda, bhṛtakapuruṣaḥ saḥ |
kimasau dāsyati? gacchāma kulopakagṛheṣu gatvā purobhaktakāṃ karma iti |
te kulopakagṛhāṇyupa­saṃk­rāntāḥ |
tairuktāh—ārya, purobhaktakāṃ kuruteti |
te kathayanti—evaṃ kurma iti |
taiḥ purobhaktakā kṛtā |
bhagavāṃstasya gṛhapater niveśane purastādbhikṣusaṃghasya prajñapta evāsane niṣaṇṇaḥ |
ṣaḍvargīyā api purobhaktakāṃ kṛtvā saṃ­ghamadhye niṣaṇṇaḥ |
atha sa gṛhapatipurtaḥ sukhopaniṣaṇṇaṃ buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ viditvā śucinā praṇītena khādanīyabhijanīyena svahastaṃ saṃtarpayati saṃpravārayati |
satatapariveṣaṇaṃ kurvāṇaḥ paśyti ṣaḍvargīyān na satkṛtya parimuñjānān |
dṛṣṭvā ca punarbhagavantaṃ viditvā dhautahastamapanītapātraṃ bhagavataḥ purastāt sthitvā kathayati—bhagavan, kaiścidatrāryakair na satkṛtya paribhuktamāhāram |
deveṣu nopapatsye iti? bhagavānāha—vatsa, śayanāsanaparibhogena tāvat tvaṃ deveṣūpapadyethāḥ prāgevānnapāna­pari­bhogeneti |
atha bhagavāṃstaṃ gṛhapatiputraṃ ca dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśya samādāpya samuttejya saṃpraharṣyotthāyāsanāt prakrāntaḥ |

atrāntare pañcamātrāṇi vaṇikśatāni mahāsamudrāt saṃsiddhayānapātrāṇni rājagṛhamanuprāptāni |
rājagṛhe ca parva pratyupasthitamiti na kiṃcit krayeṇāpi labhyate |
tatraiko vaṇigbhikṣugocarikaḥ |
sa kathayati—bhavantaḥ, āgamayata kasyādya gṛhe buddhapramukhena bhikṣusaṃghena bhaktam, tatrāvaśyaṃ kiṃcidutsadanadharmakaṃ bhavatīti |
te śravaṇaparamparayā cānveṣamāṇāstasya gṛhapateḥ sakāśamupasaṃkrāntāḥ |
kathayanti—gṛhapate, tavādya buddhapramukhena bhikṣusaṃghena bhukte iha parva pratyupasthitamiti na kiṃcit krayeṇāpi labhyate |
yadi kiṃ­cidutsadana­dharma­kamas­ti, mūlyena dīyatāmiti |
na mamaitadbhaktam, api tu tasyaitadgṛhapatiputrasya bhaktam |
enam yācadhvamiti |
te tasya sakāśamupasaṃkramya kathayanti—gṛhapatiputra, dīyatāmasmākaṃ bhuktaśeṣam yadasti |
mūlyaṃ prayacchāma iti |
sa kathayati—nāhaṃ mūlyenānuprayacchāmi |
api tu evameva prayacchāmīti |
te tenānnapānena saṃtarpitā gṛhapatergatvā kathayanti—tasya te gṛhapate lābhāḥ sulabdhā yasya te niveśane buddhapramukho bhikṣusaṃgho ’nnapānena saṃtarpitaḥ, imāni ca pañca vaṇikśatānīti |
sa kathayati—anena gṛhapatiputreṇa lābhāḥ sulabdhāḥ |
anena buddhapramukho bhikṣusaṃgho ’nnapānena saṃtarpito na mayeti |
te pṛcchanti—katarasyāyaṃ gṛhapateḥ putrah? amukasya sārthavāhasya |
sārthavāhaḥ kathayati—bhavantaḥ, mamaiṣa vayasyaputro bhavati |
tasya pitā mahāsamudramavatīrṇo ’nayena vyasanamāpannaḥ |
śakyaṃ bahubhirekaḥ samuddhartum, na tveva ekena bahavaḥ |
tadayaṃ paṭakaṃ prajñapto yena vo yat parityaktam, so ’smin paṭake ’nuprayacchatviti |
te pūrvamevābhiprasannāḥ sārthavāhena ca protsāhitā iti tairyathāsambhāvyena maṇimuktādīni ratnāni dattāni |
mahān rāśiḥ saṃpannaḥ |
sārthavāhaḥ kathayati—putra, gṛhāṇeti |
sa kathayati—tāt, na mayā mūlyena dattamiti |
sārthavāhaḥ kathayati—putra, na vayaṃ tava mūlyaṃ prayachāmaḥ |
yadi ca mūlyaṃ gaṇyate, ekena ratnenedṛśānāṃ bhaktānāmanekāni śatāni saṃvidyante |
kiṃ tu vayaṃ tavābhiprasannāḥ prasannādhikāraṃ kurmaḥ, gṛhāṇeti |
sa kathayati—tāt, mayā buddhapramukho bhikṣusaṃgho bhojito deveṣūpapatsye iti |
tasmādavaśiṣṭam yuṣmabhyaṃ dattam |
yadi grahīṣyāmi, sthānametadvidyate yaddeveṣu nopapatsye? sārthavāhah—putra, abhiśraddadhāsi tvaṃ bhagavatah? tāt, abhiśraddadhe |
gaccha, bhagavantaṃ pṛccha |
sa yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ |
upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ |
sa gṛhapatiputro bhagavantamidamavocat—bhagavan, mayā buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ bhojayitvā yadannapānamavaśiṣṭam tadviṇijāṃ dattam |
te mama prasannaḥ prasannādhikāraṃ kurvanti |
kiṃ kalpate tanmama grahītumāhosvinna kalpata iti? bhagavānāha—yadi prasannāḥ prasannādhikāraṃ kurvanti, gṛhāṇa |
bhagavan, mā deveṣu notpapatsye? bhagavānāha—vatsa, puṣpametat, phalamanyadbhaviṣyati |
tena bhagavadvacanābhisampratyayāt parituṣṭena gatvā ratnāni gṛhītāni |

atrāntare rājagṛhe ’putraḥ śreṣṭhī kālagataḥ |
tato rājagṛhanivāsinaḥ paurāḥ saṃnipatya saṃjalpaṃ kurvanti—bhavantaḥ, śreṣṭhī kālagataḥ |
kaṃ śreṣṭhinamabhiṣañcāma iti? tatraike kathayanti—yaḥ puṇyamaheśākhya iti |
apare kathayanti—kathamasmābhirjñātavyamiti? te kathayanti—nānāvarṇāni bījāni pakkakumbhe prakṣipāmaḥ, ya ekavarṇānyuddhariṣyati, taṃ śreṣṭhinamabhiṣiñcāma iti |
tair nānāvarṇāni bījāni pakkakumbhe prakṣiptāni |
ārocitaṃ ca—bhavantaḥ, ya ekavarṇāni bījāni etasmāt kumbhāduddharet, sa śreṣṭhyabhiṣicyate |
yasya vaḥ śreṣṭhitvamabhipretaṃ ca, uddharatu iti |
ta uddhartumārabdhāḥ |
sarvair nānāvarṇānyuddhṛtāni |
tena tu gṛhapatiputreṇaikavarṇānyuddhṛtāni\ paurajānapadāḥ kathayanti—bhavantaḥ, ayaṃ puṇyamaheśākhyaḥ |
sarva enaṃ śreṣṭhinamabhiṣiñcāmaḥ |
tatraike kathayanti— bhavantaḥ, ayaṃ bhṛtakapuruṣaḥ |
kathamenaṃ śreṣṭhinamabhiṣiñcāma iti? apare kathayanti—punarapi tāvat jijñāsāmaḥ |
tena yāvat trirapy­eka­varṇānyuddhṛtāni |
te kathayanti—bhavantaḥ, manuṣyakā apyasya sākṣepamanuprayacchanti |
āgacchata, enamevābhiṣiñcāma iti |
sa taiḥ śreṣṭhī abhiṣiktaḥ |
sa gṛhapatiḥ saṃlakṣayati—yadapyanena mama bhṛtikayā karma kṛtam, tathāpyayaṃ puṇyamaheśākhyaḥ sattvaḥ |
saṃgrahosya kartavya iti |
tena tasya sarvālaṃkāravibhūṣitā duhitā bhāryārthaṃ dattā |
tacca gṛham, prabhūtaṃ svāpateyam |
sahasaivaṃ bhogairabhyudgata iti tasya sahasodgato gṛhapatiḥ sahasodgato gṛhapatiriti saṃjñā saṃvṛttā |

sa saṃlakṣayati—yā kācidasmākaṃ śrīsaubhāgyasampat, sarvāsau buddhaṃ bhagavantamāgamya |
yannvahaṃ punarapi buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghamantargṛhe upanimantrya bhojayeyam |
iti viditvā yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ |
upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ |
ekāntaniṣaṇṇaṃ sahasodgataṃ gṛhapatiṃ bhagavān dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśayati samādāpayati samuttejayati saṃpraharṣayati |
anekaparyāyeṇa dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśya samādāpya samuttejya saṃpraharṣya tūṣṇīm |
atha sahasodgato gṛhapatirutthāyāsanādekāṃ­sa­mutta­rāsaṅgaṃ kṛtvā yena bhagavāṃstenāñjaliṃ praṇamya bhagavantamidamavocat—adhivāsayatu bhagavāñ śvo ’ntargṛhe bhaktena sārdhaṃ bhikṣusaṃgheneti |
adhivāsayati bhagavān sahasodgatasya gṛhapatestūṣṇībhāvena |
atha sahasodgato gṛhapatirbhagavatastūṣṇī­bhāvenā­dhivāsanāṃ viditvā bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā bhagavato ’ntikāt prakrāntaḥ |
atha sahasodgato gṛhapatistāmeva rātriṃ śuciṃ praṇītaṃ khādanīyaṃ bhojanīyaṃ samudānīya kālyamevotthāya āsanāni prajñapyodakamaṇīn pratiṣṭhāpya bhagavato dūtena kālamārocayati—samayo bhadanta, sajjaṃ bhaktam yasyedānīṃ bhagavān kālaṃ manyata iti |
atha bhagavān pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaramādāya bhikṣugaṇaparivṛto yena sahasodgatasya gṛhapater niveśanaṃ tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ |
upasaṃkramya purastādbhikṣusaṃghasya prajñapta evāsane niṣaṇṇaḥ |
atha sahasodgato gṛhapatiḥ sukhopaniṣaṇṇaṃ buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ viditvā śucinā praṇītena khādanīyena bhojanīyena svahastaṃ saṃtarpayati saṃpravārayati |
anekaparyāyeṇa śucinā praṇītena khādanīyena bhojanīyena svahastaṃ saṃtarpya saṃpravārya bhagavantaṃ bhuktavantaṃ viditvā dhautahastamapanītapātraṃ nīcataramāsanaṃ gṛhītvā bhagavataḥ purastāt niṣaṇṇo dharmaśravaṇāya |
tasya bhagavatā āśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśī caturāyasatyasamprativedhikī dharmadeśanā kṛtā, yāṃ śrutvā sahasodgatena gṛhapatinā viṃśatiśikharasamudgataṃ satkāyadṛṣṭiśailaṃ jñānavajreṇa bhittvā srotāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam |
sa dṛṣṭasatyastrirudānamudānayati—idamasmākaṃ bhadanta na mātrā kṛtaṃ na pitrā neṣṭena na svajanabandhuvargeṇa na rājñā na devatābhir na pūrvapretair na śrama­ṇabrāhmaṇairyadbhagavatā asmākaṃ kṛtam |
ucchoṣitā rudhirāśrasamudrāḥ, laṅghitā asthiparvatāḥ, pihitānyapāyadvārāṇi, vivṛtāni svargamokṣadvārāṇi, pratiṣṭhāpitāḥ, smo devamanuṣyeṣu |
abhikrānto ’haṃ bhadanta abhikrāntaḥ |
eṣo ’haṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ śaraṇaṃ gacchāmi dharmaṃ ca bhikṣusaṃghaṃ ca |
upāsakaṃ ca māṃ dhāraya adyāgreṇa yāvajjīvaṃ prāṇopetamabhiprasannamiti |
atha bhagavān sahasodgataṃ gṛhapatiṃ dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśya samādāpya samuttejya saṃpraharṣyotthāyāsanāt prakrāntaḥ |

bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāaḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuh—kiṃ bhadanta sahasodgatena gṛhapatinā karma kṛtam yena bhṛtikayā karma kṛtam, yena sahasā bhogairabhivṛddhaḥ, satyadarśanaṃ ca kṛtamiti? bhagavānāha—saha­sodgatenaiva bhikṣavo gṛhapatinā karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni labdhasambhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayāni oghavatpratyupasthitānyavaśyabhāvīni |
sahasodgatena gṛhapatinā karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni |
ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipaṣyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tu upātteṣveva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni vipacyante śubhānyaśubhāni ca |
na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatairapi |
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām (3)|
bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’nyatarasmin karvaṭake gṛhapatiḥ prativasati āḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogo vistīrṇaviśālaparigraho vaiśravaṇadhanasamudito vaiśravaṇadhanapratispardhī |
tena sadṛśāt kulāt kalatramānītam |
sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati |
tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ patnī āpannasattvā saṃvṛttā |
sā aṣṭānāṃ vā navānāṃ vā māsānāmatyayāt prasūtā |
dārako jātaḥ |
tasya trīṇi saptakāny­eka­viṃ­śatidivasāni vistareṇa jātasya jātimahaṃ kṛtvā kulasadṛśaṃ nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpitam |
sa unnīto vardhito mahān saṃvṛttaḥ |
yāvadapareṇa samayena sa gṛhapatiḥ saṃprāpte vasantakālasamaye saṃpuṣpiteṣu pādapeṣu haṃ­sakrauñcama­yūra­śukaśārikākokilajīvaṃ­jīvakonnāditam vanakhaṇḍamantarjanasahāya udyānabhūmiṃ nirgataḥ |
asati buddhānāmutpāde pratyekabuddhā loka utpadyante hīnadīnānukampakāḥ prāntaśayanāsanabhaktā ekadakṣiṇīyā lokasyā |
yāvadanyatamaḥ pratyekabuddho janapadacārikāṃ caraṃstaṃ karvaṭakamanuprāptaḥ |
prāntaśayanāsanasevinaste na |
so ’praviśyaiva karvaṭakam yena tadudyānaṃ tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ |
adrākṣīt sa gṛhapatistaṃ pratyekabuddhaṃ kāyaprāsādikaṃ ca śānteneryāpathenodyānaṃ praviśantam |
dṛṣṭvā ca punaḥ prītiprāmodyajātastvaritatvaritaṃ pratyudgataḥ |
pratyekabuddhaḥ saṃ­lakṣayati—ākīrṇamidamud­yānam |
anyatra gacche |
iti viditvā pratinivartitumārabdhaḥ |
sa gṛhapatiḥ pādayor nipatya kathayati—ārya, kiṃ nivartase tvam? piṇḍakenārthī |
ahamapi puṇyena |
asminnevodyāne vihara, piṇḍakenāvighātaṃ karomīti |
parānugrahapravṛttāste mahātmānaḥ |
sa tasyānukampā­citta­mupasthāpya tasminnevodyāne vihartumārabdhaḥ |
so ’pi tasya piṇḍakena yogodvahanaṃ kartuṃ pravṛttaḥ |
yāvadapareṇa samayena tasya gṛhapateran­yata­rakarvaṭake kiṃcit karaṇīyamutpannam |
sa patnīmāmantrayate—bhadre, mamāmuṣmin karvaṭake kiṃcit karaṇīyamutpannam |
tatrāhaṃ gacchāmi |
tvayā tasya mahātmanaḥ pravrajitasyānnapānenāvighātaḥ kartavyaḥ |
ityuktvā prakrāntaḥ |
aparasmin divase sā gṛhapatnī kālyamevotthāya tadarthamannapānaṃ sādhayitumārabdhā |
sā putreṇocyate—amba, kasyārthe ’nnapānaṃ sādhyata iti? sā kathayati—putra, yo ’sau udyāne śāntātma pravrajitastiṣṭhati, tasyārthe sādhyata iti |
sa ruṣitaḥ kathayati—amba, kimarthaṃ bhṛtikayā karma kṛtvā na bhuṅkta iti? sā kathayati—putra, mā evaṃ vocaḥ |
aniṣṭo ’sya karmaṇo vipāka iti |
sa nivāryamāṇo ’pi nāvatiṣṭhate |
yāvadasau gṛhapatirāgataḥ |
patnīmāmantrayate—bhadre, kṛtaste tasya piṇḍakenāvighātah? āryaputra kṛtaḥ |
kiṃ tu anena dārakeṇa tasyāntike kharāvāgniścāritā |
sa kathayati—bhadre, kiṃ kathayati? tayā vistareṇa samākhyātam |
sa saṃlakṣayati—kṣamo ’yaṃ tapasvī |
gacchāmi, taṃ mahātmānaṃ kṣamāpayāmi—mā atyantameva kṣato bhaviṣyati |
iti viditvā taṃ dārakamādāya yena praty­eka­buddhas­tenopa­saṃk­rāntaḥ |
adrākṣīt sa pratyekabuddhastaṃ gṛhapatimātmanā dvitīyamāgacchantam |
sa saṃlakṣayati—na kadācidayaṃ gṛhapatirātmanā dvitīyamāgacchati |
tat kimatra kāraṇamiti? asamanvāhṛtya śrāvakapratyekabuddhānāṃ jñānadarśanaṃ na pravartate |
sa samanvāhartuṃ pravṛttaḥ |
ten samanvāhṛtya vijñātam |
kāyikī teṣāṃ mahātmanāṃ dharmadeśanā na vācikī |
sa tasyānukampārthaṃ vitatapakṣa hava haṃsarāja uparivihāyasamabhyudgamya jvalanata­pana­varṣaṇavidyotanaprātihāryāṇi kartumārabdhaḥ |
āśu pṛthagjanasya ṛddhirāvarjanakarī |
sa mūlanikṛtta iva drumaḥ saputraḥ pādayor nipatitaḥ |
tataḥ sa dāraka āhṛṣṭaromakūpaḥ kathayati—avatara avatara sadbhūtadakṣiṇīya, mama kāmapaṅkanimagnasya hastod­dhāra­manuprayaccheti |
sa tasyānukampārthamavatīrṇaḥ |
sa gṛhapatiputrastīvreṇāśayena pādayor nipatya praṇidhānaṃ kartumārabdhah—yanmayā evaṃvidhe sadbhūtadakṣiṇīye kharā vāgniścāritā, mā tasya karmaṇo bhāgī syām |
yattu idānīṃ cittamabhiprasāditam, anenāhaṃ kuśalamūlenāḍhye mahādhane mahā­bhoge kule jāyeyam, evaṃvidhānāṃ ca dharmāṇāṃ lābhī syām, prativiśiṣṭataraṃ cātaḥ śāstāramārāgayeyaṃ mā virāgayeyamiti |

kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavah? yo ’sau gṛhapatiputraḥ, eṣa evāsau sahasodgato gṛhapatiḥ |
yadanena pratyekabuddhasyāntike kharā vāgniścāritā, tena pañca janmaśatāni bhṛtakapuruṣo jātaḥ |
yāvadetarhyapi bhṛtikayā karma kṛtam |
yat punastasyaivāntike cittamabhiprasādya praṇidhānaṃ kṛtam, tena sahasaiva bhogairabhivṛddhaḥ |
mamāntike satyadarśanaṃ kṛtam |
ahaṃ cānena praty­eka­buddha­koṭi­śata­sahas­rebhyaḥ prativiśiṣṭataraḥ śāstā ārāgito na virāgitaḥ |
iti hi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇāmekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekānta­śuklānāme­kānta­śuklaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ |
tasmāttarhi ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇyapāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣveva karmasvābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ |
ityevaṃ vo bhikavaḥ śikṣitavyam |
