31. toyikāmahāvadānam

tatra bhagavbānāyuṣmantamā­mantra­yate—sma āgamaya ānanda yena śrāavastīti |
evaṃ bhadantetyāyucmānānando bhagavataḥ pratyaśrauṣīt |
atha bhagavān yena śrāvastī tena cārikāṃ prakrāntaḥ |
yāvadanyatamasmin pradeśe brāhmaṇaśchinnabhakto halaṃ vāhayati, tasyārthāya dārikā peyāmādāya gatā |
bhagavāṃśca pradeśamanuprāptaḥ |
dadarśa sa brāhmaṇo buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ dvātriṃśatā mahāpuruṣalakcaṇaiḥ samalaṃ­kṛtamaśītyānuvyañjanairvirājitagātraṃ vyāmaprabhālaṃkṛtaṃ sūryasahasrātirekaprabhaṃ jaṅgamamiva ratnaparvataṃ samantato bhadrakam |
sahadarśanāccāsya bhagavati prasāda utpannaḥ |
na tathā dvādaśavarṣābhyastaḥ śamathaścattasya kalyatāṃ janayati, aputrasya vā putrapratilambhaḥ, daridrasya vā nidhidarśanam, rājyābhinandano vā rājyābhiṣekaḥ, yathopacitakuśalamūlasya sattvasya tatprathamato buddhadarśanam |
sa tāṃ peyāmādāya laghuladhveva yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ |
upasaṃkramya bhagavantametadavocat—iyaṃ bho gautama peyā |
yadyasti mamāntike ’nukampā, pibedbhagavān gautamaḥ peyāmiti |
tato bhagavatā brāhmaṇasya jīrṇakūpo darśitah—sacette brāhmaṇa parityaktā, asmiñ jīrṇakūpe prakṣipeti |
tena tasmiñ jīrṇakūpe prakṣiptā |
sa jīrṇakūpo vāpyāyamānaḥ peyāpūrṇaḥ, yathāpi tadbuddhānāṃ buddhānubhāvena devatānāṃ ca devatānubhāvena |
tato bhagavatā sa brāhmaṇo ’bhihitah—cāraya mahābrāhmaṇa peyāmiti |
sa cārayitumārabdhaḥ |
bhagavatā tathā adhiṣṭhitā yathā sarvasaṃghena pītā |
sa ca jīrṇakūpo vāpyāyamānastathaiva peyāpūrṇo ’vasthitaḥ |
tato ’sau brāhmaṇo bhūyasyā mātrayā abhiprasanno bhagavataḥ pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā purastānniṣaṇṇo dharmaśravaṇāya |
tasya bhagavatā āśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśī caturāyasatyasamprativedhikī dharmadeśanā kṛtā, pūrvavadyāvadanādikālopacitaṃ satkāyadṛṣṭiśailaṃ jñānavajreṇa bhittvā srotāapattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam |
atikrānto ’haṃ bhadanta, atikrāntaḥ |
eṣo ’haṃ bhagavantaṃ buddhaṃ śaraṇaṃ gacchāmi dharmaṃ ca bhikṣusaṃghaṃ ca |
upāsakaṃ ca māṃ dhāraya adyāgreṇa yāvajjīvaṃ prāṇopetaṃ śaraṇaṃ gatamabhiprasannam |
athāsau brāhmaṇo vaṇigiva labdhalābhaḥ śasyasampanna iva kṛṣīvalaḥ śūra iva vijitasaṃgrāmaḥ sarvaroganirmukta ivāturo bhagavato bhāṣita­mabh­yāna­ndyānumodya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā bhagavato ’ntikāt prakrānto yāvatkṣetraṃ gataḥ |
paśyati tasmin kṣetre sauvarṇān yavān saṃpannān |
dṛṣṭvā ca punarvismayotphullalocano gāthāṃ bhāṣate— aho guṇamayaṃ kṣetraṃ sarvadoṣavivarjitam |
adyaiva vāpitaṃ bījamadyaiva phaladāyakam (1)|
tato ’sau brāhmaṇastvaritatvaritaṃ rājñaḥ sakāśamupasaṃkrāntaḥ |
upasaṃkramya jayenāyuṣā vardhayitvā rājānamuvāca—deva, mayā yavāḥ prakīrṇāḥ, te sauvarṇāḥ saṃvṛttāḥ |
tasyādhiṣṭhāyakena prasādaḥ kriyatāmiti |
rājñā adhiṣṭhāyako ’nupreṣitaḥ |
brāhmaṇena rāśīkṛtya bhājitaḥ |
rājabhāgaḥ svābhāvikā yavāḥ saṃvṛttāḥ |
adhiṣṭhāyakena rājñe niveditam |
rājñā samādiṣṭam—punarbhājayateti |

taiḥ punarbhājitam |
tathaiva rājabhāgaḥ svābhāvikā yavāḥ saṃvṛttāḥ |
evam yāvat saptakṛtvo bhājitam |
tathaiva |
rājā kutūhalajātaḥ svayameva paśyati—tathaiva |
tenāsau brāhmaṇo ’bhihitah—brāhmaṇa, tavaitatpuṇyanirjātam |
alaṃ rājabhāgena, yathābhipretaṃ tanmamānuprayaccheti |
tatastena brāhmaṇena parituṣṭena yaddattam, tatsauvarṇāḥ saṃvṛttāḥ |

tato bhagavān saṃprasthitaḥ |
yāvadanyatamasmin pradeśe pañcakārṣaśatānyutpāḍūtpāṇḍukāni sphuṭitapāṇipādāni śaṇaśāṭīnivāsitāni laṅgalāni vāhayanti |
te ’pi balīvardā baddhaiḥ prayoktraiḥ pratodayaṣṭibhiḥ kṣatavikṣatagātrā muhurmuhur niśvasanto vahanti |
tadṛśuste kārṣākā buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ dvātriṃśatā mahāpuruṣalakṣaṇaiḥ samalaṃkṛtaṃ pūrvavadyāvadupacit­akuśala­mūla­sattvasya tatprathamato buddhadarśanam |
tato yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntāḥ |
adrākṣīdbhagavāṃstān kārṣakān dūrādeva |
dṛṣṭvā ca punarvineyāpekṣayā mārgādapakramya purastādbhikṣusaṃghasya prajñapta evāsane niṣaṇṇaḥ |
eta kārṣakā bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā ekāntaniṣaṇṇāḥ |
tato bhagavatā teṣāṃ kārṣakāṇāmāśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśī caturāryasatyasamprativedhikī dharmadeśanā kṛtā, pūrvavadyāvadanādikālopacitaṃ satkāyadṛṣṭiśailaṃ jñānavajreṇa bhittvā srotāapattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam |
te dṛṣṭasatyā yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ |
praṇamayya bhagavantamidamavocat—deśaya bhadanta, svākhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajyāmupasampadaṃ bhikṣubhāvam |
carema bhagavato ’ntike brahmacaryamiti |
te bhagavatā ehibhikṣukayā pravrājitāḥ pūrvavadyāvatte ’vasthitā buddhamanorathena |
teṣāṃ bhagavatā avavādo dattaḥ |
tairyujyamānaiḥ pūrvavadabhivādyāśca saṃvṛttāḥ |
te ’pi balīvardā yoktrāṇi varatrāṇi ca cchittvā yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntāḥ |
upasaṃkramya bhagavantaṃ sāmantakena anuparivāryāvasthitāḥ |
teṣāṃ bhagavatā tribhiḥ padārthairdharmo deśitaḥ pūrvavadyāvadyathā gaṅgāvatāre haṃsamatsyakūrmāṇām yāvad dṛṣṭasatyāḥ svarbhavanaṃ gatāḥ |

bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuh—kiṃ nu taiḥ kārṣakapūrvakairbhikṣu­bhiḥ karma kṛtam yena kārṣakāḥ saṃvṛttāḥ, bhagavataśca śāsane pravrajya sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam? tairbalīvardapūrvakairdeva­putraiḥ kiṃ karma kṛtam, yana balīvardeṣūpapannāḥ, satyadarśanaṃ ca kṛtamiti? bhagavānāha—ebhireva bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni labdhasambhārāṇi pūrvavadyāvatphalanti khalu dehinām |

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’sminneva bhadrakalpe viṃśativarṣasahasrāyuṣi prajāyāṃ kāśyapo nāma śāstā loka udapādi |
pūrvavat |
sa vārāṇasīnagarīmupaniśritya viharati ṛṣivadane(patane) mṛgadāve |
tasya śāsane etāni pañca karṣakaśatāni pravrajitānyabhūvan |
tatraibhir na paṭhitaṃ na svādhyāyitaṃ nāpi manasikāro vihitaḥ |
kiṃ tu śraddhādeyaṃ bhuktvā bhuktvā saṃgaṇikābhirataiḥ kausīdyenābhināmitam |

kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yāni tāni pañca bhikṣuśatāni, etānyeva tāni pañca karṣakaśatāni |
yo ’sau vihārasvāmī, sa evāsau gṛhapatiryasyaite kārṣahāḥ |
yadebhirvihāras­vāmisantakaṃ śraddhādeyaṃ paribhujya na paṭhitaṃ na svādhyāyitaṃ nāpi manasikāro vihitaḥ, kiṃ tu saṃgaṇikābhirataiḥ kausīdyenābhināmitam, tena karmaṇā pañca janmaśatāni tasya vihārasvāminaḥ kārṣakāḥ saṃvṛttāḥ |
yāvadetarhyapi tasyaiva kārṣakā jātāḥ |
yadebhiḥ kāśayapasya samyaksambuddhāsya śāsane pravrajya brahmacaryaṃ caritam, tenaitarhi mama śāsane pravrajya sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam |
te ca balīvardapūrviṇo devaputrāḥ kāśyapasya samyaksambuddhasya śāsane pravrajitā āsan |
tatraibhiḥ kṣudrānukṣudrāṇi śikṣāpadāni khaṇḍitāni |
tena karmaṇā balīvardeṣūpapannāḥ |
yanmamāntike cittamabhiprasāditam, tena deveṣūpapannāḥ |
yatkāśyape samyaksambuddhe brahmacaryaṃ vāsitam, tenedānīṃ devaputrabhūtaiḥ satyadarśanaṃ kṛtam |
iti bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇāmekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, pūrvavadyāvadābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ |
ityevaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam |

evaṃ bhadantetyāyuṣmānānando bhagavato ’śrauṣīt |
bhagavāṃ­stoyi­kāma­nuprāptaḥ |
tasmiṃśca pradeśe brāhmaṇo lāṅgalaṃ vāhayati |
athāsau dadarśa buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ dvātriṃśatā mahāpuruṣalakṣaṇaiḥ samalaṃkṛtagātraṃ pūrvavadyāvatsamantato bhadrakam |
dṛṣṭvā saṃlakṣayati—yadi bhagavantaṃ gautamamupetya abhivādayiṣyāmi, karmaparihāṇirme bhaviṣyati |
atha nopetyābhivādayiṣyāmi, puṇyaparihāṇiḥ |
tatko ’sāvupāyaḥ syādyena me na karmaparihāṇi syānnāpi puṇyaparihāṇiriti? tasya buddhirutpannā—atrastha evābhivādanaṃ karomi |
evaṃ na karmaparihāṇirbhavati nāpi puṇyaparihāṇiriti |
tena yathāgṛhītayaiva pratodayaṣṭyā tatrasthenābhivādanaṃ kṛtam—abhivādaye buddhaṃ bhagavantam |
tatra bhagavānāyuṣmanta­māna­ndamā­mantra­yate—kṣaṇa ānanda eṣa brāhmaṇaḥ |
sacedasyaivaṃ samyakpratyātmaj­ñāna­darśanaṃ pravartate |
etasmin pradeśe kāśyapasya samyaksam­buddhas­yāvikopito ’shtisaṃghātastiṣṭhatīti |
athānenopasaṃkramya vandito bhaveyam |
evamanena dvābhyāṃ samyaksambuddhābhyāṃ vandanā kṛtā bhavet |
tatkasya hetoh? asminn ānanda pradeśe kāśyapasya samyaksam­buddhas­yāvikopito ’sthisaṃghātastiṣṭhatīti |
athāyuṣmānānando laghulaghveva caturguṇamuttarāsaṅgaṃ prajñapya bhagavantamidamavocat—niṣīdatu bhagavān prajñapta evāsane |
evamayaṃ pṛthivīpradeśo dvābhyāṃ samyaksambuddhābhyāṃ paribhukto bhaviṣyati, yacca kāśyapena samyaksambuddhena, yaccaitarhi bhagavateti |
niṣaṇṇo bhagavān prajñapta evāsane |
niṣadya bhagavān bhikṣūnāmantrayate sma—icchatha yūyaṃ bhikṣavaḥ kāśyapasya samyaksambuddhasya śarīrasaṃghātamavikopitaṃ draṣṭum? etasya bhagavan kālaḥ, etasya sugata samayo ’yam |
bhagavān bhikṣūṇāṃ kāśyapasya samyaksam­buddhas­yāvikopitaṃ śarīra­saṃ­ghātamu­pada­rśayatu, dṛṣṭvā bhikṣavaś­citta­mabhiprasā­dayiṣyanti |
bhagavatā laukikaṃ cittamutpāditam |
dharmatā khalu yasmin samaye buddhā bhagavanto laukikam cittamutpādayanti, tasmin samaye kuntapipīlikādayo ’pi prāṇino bhagavataścetasā cittamājānanti |
nāgāḥ saṃlakṣayanti—kiṃ kāraṇaṃ bhagavatā laukikaṃ cittamutpāditam? bhagavān kāśyapasya samyaksambuddhasya śarīrasaṃghātamavikopitaṃ draṣṭukāmaḥ |
tatastaiḥ kāśyapasya samyaksam­buddhas­yāvikopitaḥ śarīrasaṃghāta ucchrāpitaḥ |
tatra bhagavān bhikṣūnāmantrayate sma—gṛhṇīta bhikṣavo nimittam |
antardhāsyatīti |
antarhitaḥ |

rājñā prasenajitā śrutam—bhagavatā śrāvakāṇāṃ darśanāya avikopitaḥ kaśyapasya samyaksambuddhasya śarīrasaṃghāta ucchrāpita iti |
śrutvā ca punaḥ kutūhalajātaḥ sārdhamantah—pureṇa kumāra­uramātyairbhaṭabalāgrair naigamajanapadaiśca draṣṭuṃ saṃprasthitaḥ |
evaṃ virūḍhako ’nāthapiṇḍado gṛhapatiḥ, ṛṣidattaḥ purāṇasthapatiḥ, viśākhā mṛgaramātā, anekāni ca prāṇiśatasahasrāṇi kutūhalajātāni draṣṭuṃ saṃprasthitāni pūrvakaiśca kuśalamūlaiḥ saṃcodyamānāni |
yāvadasau antarhitaḥ |
taiḥ śrutam—antarhito ’sau bhagavataḥ kāśyapasya samyaksambuddhasya śīrarasaṃghāta iti |
śrutvā ca punasteṣāṃ duḥkha­daurmanasyamutpannam—vṛthā asmākamāgamanaṃ jātamiti |

athānyatamena copāsakena sa pradeśaḥ pradakṣiṇīkṛtaḥ |
evaṃ cetasā citta­mabhi­saṃs­kṛtam—asmānme padāvihārāt kiyatpuṇyaṃ bhaviṣyatīti? atha bhagavāṃstasya mahā­janakāyasyāvipratisāra­saṃ­jananārthaṃ tasya copāsakasya cetasā cittamājñāya gāthāṃ bhāṣite— śataṃsahasrāṇi suvarṇaniṣkā jāmbūnadā nāsya samā bhavanti |
yo buddhacaityeṣu prasannacittaḥ padāvihāraṃ prakaroti vidvān (2)|
anyatamenāpyupāsakena tasmin pradeśe mṛttikāpiṇḍo dattaḥ |
evaṃ citta­mabhi­saṃs­kṛtam—padāvihārasya tāvadiyatpuṇyamākhyātaṃ bhagavatā |
asya tu mṛttikāpiṇḍasya kiyatpuṇyaṃ bhaviṣyatīti? atha bhagavāṃs tasyāpi cittamājñāya gāthāṃ bhāṣate— śataṃsahasrāṇi suvarṇapiṇḍaṃ jāmbūnadā nāsya samā bhavanti |
yo buddhacaityeṣu prasannacitta āropayenmettikapiṇḍamekam (3)|
iti |
tacchrutvā anekaiḥ prāṇi­śata­sahas­rairmṛtpiṇḍasamāropaṇaṃ kṛtam |
aparaistatra muktapuṣpāṇi kṣiptāni, evaṃ citta­mabhi­saṃs­kṛtam—padāvihārasya mṛttikāpiṇḍasya ceyatpuṇyamuktaṃ bhagavatā, asmākaṃ tu muktapuṣpāṇāṃ kiyatpuṇyaṃ bhaviṣyatīti? atha bhagavāṃsteṣāmapi cittamājñāya gāthāṃ bhāṣate—śataṃsahasrāṇi suvarṇamūḍhaṃ jāmbūnadā nāsya samā bhavanti |
yo buddhacaityeṣu prasannacitta āropayenmuktakapuṣparāśim (4)|
iti |
aparaistatra mālāvihāraḥ kṛtaḥ, cittaṃ cābhi­saṃs­kṛtam—muktapuṣpāṇāṃ bhagavatā iyatpuṇyamuktam |
asmākaṃ mālāvihārasya kiyatpuṇyaṃ bhaviṣyatīti? atha bhagavāṃsteṣāmapi cittamājñāya gāthāṃ bhāṣate— śatasahasrāṇi suvarṇavāhā jāmbūnadā nāsya samā bhavanti |
yo buddhacaityeṣu prasannacitto mālāvihāraṃ prakaroti vidvān (5)|
iti |
aparaistatra dīpamālā dattā, cittaṃ cābhi­saṃs­kṛtam—mālāvihārasya bhagavatā iyatpuṇyamuktam |
asmākaṃ pradīpadānasya kiyatpuṇyaṃ bhaviṣyatīti? atha bhagavāṃsteṣāmapi cetasā cittamājñāya gāthāṃ bhāṣate— śataṃsahasrāṇi suvarṇakoṭyo jāmbūnadā nāsy bhavanti |
yo buddhacaityeṣu prasannacittaḥ pradīpadānaṃ prakaroti vidvān (6)|
iti |
aparaistatra gandhābhiṣeko dattaḥ, cittaṃ cābhi­saṃs­kṛtam—pradīpadānasya bhagavatā iyat puṇyamuktam |
asmākaṃ gandhābhiṣekasya kiyatpuṇyaṃ bhaviṣyatīti? atha bhagavāṃsteṣāṃ cetasā cittamājñāya gāthāṃ bhāṣate— śatasahasrāṇi suvarṇāśayo jāmbūnadā nāsya samā bhavanti |
yo buddhacaityeṣu prasannacitto gandhābhiṣekaṃ prakaroti vidvān (7)|
iti |
aparaistatra dhvajapatākāropaṇaṃ kṛtam, cittaṃ cābhi­saṃs­kṛtam—pada­vihārasya mṛtpiṇḍadānasya, muktapuṣpāṇāṃ mālavihārasya pradīpadānasya gandhābhiṣekasya ca iyatpuṇyamuktaṃ bhagavatā, āsmākaṃ chatradhvajapatākāropaṇasya kiyatpuṇyaṃ bhaviṣyatīti? atha bhagavāṃsteṣāṃ cittamājñāya gāthāṃ bhāṣate—śatasahasrāṇi suvarṇaparvatā meroḥ samā nāsya bhavanti |
yo buddhacaityeṣu prasannacitta āropayecchatradhvajapatākam (8)|
eṣāṃ hi dakṣiṇā proktā aprameye tathāgate |
samudrakalpe saṃbuddhe sārthavāhe anuttare (9)|
iti |
teṣāmetadabhavat—pari­nirvṛtasya tāvadbhagavataḥ pūjākaraṇādi yatpuṇyamuktaṃ bhagavatā, tiṣṭhataḥ kiyatpuṇyaṃ bhaviṣyatīti |
atha bhagavāṃsteṣāmapi cetasā cittamājñāya gāthāṃ bhāṣate— tiṣṭhantaṃ pūjayedyacca yaccāpi parinirvṛtam |
samaṃ cittaprasādena nāsti puṇyaviśeṣatā |
evaṃ hyacintiyā buddhā buddhadharmāpyacintiyā (10)|
acintiyaiḥ prasan­nānā­mapratihata­dharma­cakrapravartinām |
samyaksambuddhānāṃ nālaṃ guṇapāramadhigantum (11)|
iti |
tato bhagavatā tasya mahājanakāyasya tathāvidhā dharmadeśanā kṛtā, yām anekaiḥ prāṇiśatasahasrairmahān viśeṣo ’dhigataḥ |
kaiścicchrāvakabodhau cittānyutpāditāni, kaiścit pratyekabodhau, kaiściduṣmagatāni pratilabdhāni, kaiścid mūrdhānaḥ, kaiścitsatyānulomaḥ kṣāntyaḥ, kaiścicchrotāapattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam, kaiścitsakṛdāgāmiphalam, kaiścidanāgāmiphalam, kaiścitsarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam |
yadbhūyasā sā parṣadbuddhaniṃnā dharmapravaṇā saṃghaprāgbhārā vyavasthitā |
sārdhaṃ tatra brāhmaṇagṛhapatibhistasmin pradeśe mahaḥ sthāpitah—toyi­kāmahastoyi­kāmaha iti saṃjñā saṃvṛttā |
