4. brāhmaṇadārikāvadānam

bhagavān nyagrodhikāmanuprāptaḥ |
atha bhagavān pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaramādāya nyagrodhikāṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣat |
kapilavastuno brāhmaṇasya dārikā nyagrodhikāyāṃ niviṣṭā |
adrākṣīt sā brāhmaṇadārikā bhagavantaṃ dvātriṃśatā mahāpuruṣalakṣaṇaiḥ samalaṃ­kṛtamaśītyānuvyañjanairvirājitagātraṃ vyāmaprabhālaṃkṛtaṃ sūryasahasrātirekaprabhaṃ jaṅgamamiva ratnaparvataṃ samantato bhadrakam |
sahadarśanādasyā etadabhavat—ayaṃ sa bhagavāñ śākyakulanandanaś­cakra­vartikulād rājyamapahāya sphītamantaḥpuraṃ sphītāni ca kośakoṣṭhāgārāṇi pravrajita idānīṃ bhikṣāmaṭate |
yadi mamāntikātsaktukabhikṣāṃ pratigṛhṇīyāt, ahamasmai dadyāmiti |
tato bhagavatā tasyāścetasā cittamājñāya pātramupanāmitam—yadi te bhagini parityaktam, ākīryatāmasmin pātra iti |
tato bhūyasyā mātrayā tasyāḥ prasāda utpannaḥ |
jānāti me bhagavāṃścetasā cittamiti viditvā tīvreṇa prasādena bhagavate saktubhikṣāṃ dattavatī |
tato bhagavatā smitamupadarśitam |
dharmatā khalu yasmin samaye buddhā bhagavantaḥ smitaṃ prāviṣkurvanti, tasmin samaye nīlapītalohitāvadātāḥ puṣparāgapadmarāga­vajra­vaiḍūryamusāragalvārkalohitakādakṣiṇāvarta­śaṅkha­śilāpravā­lajātarūpa­raja­tavarṇā arciṣo mukhānniścārya kāścidadhastādgacchanti, kāścidupariṣṭādgacchanti |
yā adhastādgacchanti, tāḥ saṃjīvaṃ kālasūtraṃ saṃghātaṃ rauravaṃ mahārauravaṃ tapanaṃ pratāpanamavīcimarbudaṃ nirarbudamaṭaṭaṃ hahava huhuvamutpalaṃ padmaṃ mahāpadmamavīciparyantān narakān gatvā ye uṣṇanarakāsteṣu śītībhūtvā nipatanti, ye śītanarakāsteṣūṣṇībhūtvā nipatanti |
tenānugatāsteṣāṃ sattvānāṃ tasmin kṣaṇe kāraṇāviśeṣāḥ, te pratiprasrabhyante |
teṣāmevaṃ bhavati—kiṃ nu vayaṃ bhavantam itaścyutā āhosvidanyatropapannā iti |
teṣāṃ prasādasaṃjananārthaṃ bhagavānnirmitam darśanam visarjayati |
teṣāṃ nirmitaṃ dṛṣṭvaivaṃ bhavati—na hyeva vayaṃ bhavanta itaścyutāḥ, nāpyanyatropapannā iti |
te nirmite cittamabhiprasādya tannarakavedanīyaṃ karma kṣapayitvā devamanuṣyeṣu pratisaṃdhiṃ gṛhṇanti, yatra satyānāṃ bhājanabhūtā bhavanti |
yā upariṣṭādgacchanti, tāścāturmahārājikān devān gatvā trāyastriṃśān yāmāṃstuṣitān nirmāṇaratīn paranirmitavaśavartino devān brahmakāyikān brahmapurohitān mahābrahmaṇaḥ parīttābhānapramāṇābhānābhās­varān parīttaśubhānapramāṇaśubhāñ śubhakṛtsnānanabhrakān puṇyaprasavān bṛhatphalānabhṛhānatapān sudṛśān sudarśānakaniṣṭha­paryantān devān gatvā anityaṃ duḥkhaṃ śūnya­manāt­metyudghoṣayanti |
gāthādvayaṃ ca bhāṣante— ārabhadhvaṃ niṣkrāmata yujyadhvaṃ buddhaśāsane |
dhunīta mṛtyunaḥ sainyaṃ naḍāgāramiva kuñjaraḥ (1)|
yo hyasmin dharmavinaye apramattaścariṣyati |
prahāya jātisaṃsāraṃ duḥkhasyāntaṃ kariṣyati (2)|

atha tā arciṣastrisāhas­ramahāsāhasraṃ lokadhātumanvāhiṇḍya bhagavantameva pṛṣṭhataḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ samanubaddhā gacchanti |
tadyadi bhagavānatītaṃ vyākartukāmo bhavati, pṛṣṭhato ’ntardhīyante |
anāgataṃ vyākartukāmo bhavati, purastādantardhīyante |
narakopapattiṃ vyākartukāmo bhavati, pādatale ’ntardhīyante |
tiryagupapattiṃ vyākartukāmo bhavati, pārṣṇyāmantardhīyante |
pretopapattiṃ vyākartukāmo bhavati, pādāṅguṣṭhe ’ntardhīyante |
manuṣyopapattiṃ vyākartukāmo bhavati, jānunorantardhīyante |
balacakravartirājyaṃ vyākartukāmo bhavati, vāme karatale ’ntardhīyante |
cakravartirājyaṃ vyākartukāmo bhavati, dakṣiṇe karatale ’ntardhīyante |
śrāvakabodhiṃ vyākartukāmo bhavati, āsye ’ntardhīyante |
pratyekabodhiṃ vyākartukāmo bhavati, ūrṇāyāmantardhīyante |
yadi anuttarāṃ samyaksambodhiṃ vyākartukāmo bhavati, uṣṇīṣe ’ntardhīyante |

atha tā arciṣo bhagavantaṃ triḥ pradakṣiṇīkṛtyorṇāyāmantarhitāḥ |
athāyuṣmānānandaḥ kṛtakarapuṭo bhagavantaṃ papraccha— nānāvidho raṅgasahasracitro vaktrāntarānniṣkramitaḥ kalāpaḥ |
avabhāsitā yena diśaḥ samantāt divākareṇodayatā yathaiva (3)|
gāthādvayaṃ ca bhāṣate— vigatodbhavā dainyamadaprahīṇā buddhā jagatyuttamahetubhūtāḥ |
nākāraṇaṃ śaṅkhamṛṇālagauraṃ smitamupadarśayanti jinā jitārayaḥ (4)|
tatkālaṃ svayamadhigamya dhīra buddhyā śrotṛrṇāṃ śramaṇa jinendra kāṅkṣitānām |
dhīrābhirmunivṛṣa vāgbhiruttamābhirutpannaṃ vyapanaya saṃśayaṃ śubhābhiḥ (5)|
nākasmāllavaṇajalādri­rāja­dhairyāḥ saṃbuddhāḥ smitamupadarśayanti nāthāḥ |
yasyārthe smitamupadarśayanti dhīrāstaṃ śrotuṃ samabhilaṣanti te janaughāḥ (6)|

bhagavānāha—evametad­ānanda­, evametat |
nāhetupratyayamānanda tathāgatā arhantaḥ samyaksambuddhāḥ smitaṃ prāviṣkurvanti |
samyaksambuddhāḥ smitaṃ prāviṣkurvanti |
dṛṣṭā tavaiṣā sā ānanda brāhmaṇadārikā, yayā prasā­dajātayā mahyaṃ saktubhikṣānupradattā ? dṛṣṭā bhadanta |
asāvānanda brāhmaṇadārikā anena kuśalamūlena trayodaśa kalpān vinipātaṃ na gamiṣyati |
kiṃ tarhi devāṃśca manuṣyāṃśca saṃvācyasaṃsṛtya paścime bhave paścime nikete paścime samucchraye paścima ātmabhāvapratilambhe suparṇihito nāma pratyekabuddho bhaviṣyati |
sāmantakena śabdo visṛtah—amukayā brāhmaṇadārikā prasādajātayā bhagavate saktubhikṣā pratipāditā, sā bhagavatā pratyekāyāṃ bodhau vyākṛteti |
tasyāśca svāmī puṣpasamidhāmarthāyāraṇyaṃ gataḥ |
tena śrutaṃ mama patnyā śramaṇāya gautamāya saktubhikṣā pratipāditā, sā ca śramaṇena gautamena pratyekāyāṃ bodhau vyākṛtā iti |
śrutvā punaḥ saṃjātāmarṣo yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ |
bhagavatā sārdhaṃ saṃmukhaṃ saṃmodanīṃ saṃrañjanīṃ vividhāṃ kathāṃ vyatisārya bhagavantamidamavocat—agamadbhavān gautamo ’smākaṃ niveśanam? agamaṃ brāhmaṇa |
satyaṃ bhavate tayā mama patnyā saktubhikṣā pratipāditā, sā ca tvayā pratyekāyāṃ bodhau vyākṛtā iti? satyaṃ brāhmaṇa |
tvaṃ gautama cakravartirājyamapahāya pravrajitaḥ |
kathaṃ nāma tvametarhi saktubhikṣāhetoḥ saṃprajānan mṛṣāvādaṃ saṃbhāṣase, kaste śraddhāsyati iyatpramāṇasya bījasyetat phalamiti? tena hi brāhmaṇa tvameva prakṣyāmi, yathā te kṣamate tathaivaṃ vyākuru |
kiṃ manyase brāhmaṇa asti kaścittvayā āścaryādbhuto dharmo dṛṣṭah? tiṣṭhantu tāvat bho gautama anye āścaryādbhutā dharmāḥ |
yo mayā asyāmeva nyagrodhikāyāmāścaryādbhuto dharmo dṛṣṭaḥ, sa tāvacchrūyatām |
asyāṃ bho gautama nyagrodhikāyāṃ pūrveṇa nyagrodho vṛkṣo yasya nāṃneyaṃ nyagrodhikā, tasyādhastāt pañca śakaṭaśatāni asaṃsaktāni tiṣṭhanti anyonyāsambādhamānāni |
kiyatpramāṇaṃ tasya nyagrodhasya phalam? kiyat tāvat? kedāramātram |
no bho gautama kiliñjamātram |
tailikacakramātram |
śakaṭacakramātram |
gopiṭakamātram |
bilvamātram |
kapitthamātram? no bho gautama sarṣapacatuṣṭayabhā­gamātram |
kaste śraddhāsyati iyatpramāṇasya bījasyāyaṃ mahāvṛkṣo nirvṛtta iti? śraddadhātu me bhavān gautamo mā vā |
naitat pratyakṣaṃ kṣetram |
tāvadbho gautama nirupahataṃ snig­dhama­dhura­mṛttikāpradeśaṃ bījaṃ ca navasāraṃ sukhāropitam |
kālena ca kālaṃ devo vṛṣyate, tenāyaṃ mahānyagrodhavṛkṣo ’bhinirvṛttaḥ |
atha bhagavānasminnutpanne gāthāṃ bhāṣate— yathā kṣetre ca bījena pratyakṣastvamiha dvija |
evaṃ karmavipākeṣu pratyakṣā hi tathāgatāḥ (7)|
yathā tvayā brāhmaṇa dṛṣametadalpaṃ ca bījaṃ sumahāṃśca vṛkṣaḥ |
evaṃ mayā brāhmaṇa dṛṣṭametat alpaṃ ca bījaṃ mahatī ca saṃpat (8)|

tato bhagavatā mukhāt jihvāṃ nir namayya sarvaṃ mukhamaṇḍalamācchāditam yāvat keśaparyantamupādāya, sa ca brāhmaṇo ’bhihitah—kiṃ manyase brāhmaṇa yasya mukhāt jihvāṃ niścārya sarvam mukha­maṇḍala­mācchādayati, api tvasau cakra­vartirājya­śata­sahas­rahetorapi saṃprajānan mṛṣāvadāṃ bhāṣeta? no bho gautama |
tato ’nveva gāthāṃ bhāṣate— apyeva hi syādanṛtābhidhāyinī mameha jihvārjavasatyavāditā |
tadevametanna yathā hi brāhmaṇa tathāgato ’smītyavagantumarhasi (9)|
atha sa brāhmaṇo ’bhiprasannaḥ |
tato ’sya bhagavatā āśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśī caturāryasatyasamprativedhikī dharmadeśanā kṛtā, yāṃ śrutvā brāhmaṇena viṃśatiśikharasamudgataṃ satkāyadṛṣṭiśailaṃ jñānavajreṇa bhittvā srotāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam—atikrānto ’haṃ bhadanta atikrāntaḥ |
eṣo ’haṃ bhagavantaṃ śaraṇaṃ gacchāmi dharmaṃ ca bhikṣusaṃghaṃ ca |
upāsakaṃ ca māṃ dhāraya adyāgreṇa yāvajjīvaṃ prāṇopetaṃ śaraṇaṃ gatamabhiprasannam |
atha sa brāhmaṇo bhagavato bhāṣitamabhinandyānumodya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā utthāyāsanāt prakrāntaḥ |

āttamanasaste bhikṣavo bhagavato bhāṣitamabhyanandan |
