9. meṇḍhakagṛhapativibhūtiparicchedaḥ

śrāvastyāṃ nidānam |
tena khalu samayena bhadraṃkare nagare ṣaḍ janā mahāpuṇyāḥ prativasanti—meṇḍhako gṛhapatir meṇḍhakapatnī meṇḍhakaputro meṇḍhakasnuṣā meṇḍhakadāso meṇḍhakadāsī |
kathaṃ meṇḍhako gṛhapatirjñāto mahāpuṇyah? sa yadi riktakāni kośakoṣṭhāgārāṇi paśyati, sahadarśanādeva pūryante |
evaṃ meṇḍhako gṛhapatirjñāto mahāpuṇyaḥ |
kathaṃ meṇḍhakapatnī? sā ekasyārthāya sthālikāṃ sādhayati, śatāni sahasrāṇi ca bhuñjate |
evaṃ meṇḍhakapatnī |
kathaṃ meṇḍhakaputrah? tasya pañcaśatiko nakulako kaṭyāṃ baddhastiṣṭhati |
sa yadi śataṃ sahasraṃ vā parityajati, tadā pūrṇa eva tiṣṭhati, na parikṣīyate |
evaṃ meṇḍhakaputraḥ |
kathaṃ meṇḍhakasnuṣā? sā ekasyārthāya gandhaṃ saṃpādayati, śatasahasrasya paryāptirbhavati |
evaṃ meṇḍhakasnuṣā |
kathaṃ meṇḍhakadāsah? sa yadaikaṃ halasīraṃ kṛṣati, tadā sapta sīrāḥ kṛṣṭā bhavanti |
evaṃ meṇḍhakadāsaḥ |
kathaṃ meṇḍhakadāsī mahāpuṇyā? sā yadaikaṃ vastu rakṣati, tatsaptaguṇaṃ syāt |
yadā ekamātraṃ pratijāgarti, tadā sapta mātrāḥ saṃpadyante |
evaṃ maṇḍhakadāsī mahāpuṇyā |

dharmatā khalu buddhānāṃ bhagavatāṃ mahākāruṇikānāṃ caturoghottīrṇānāṃ caturṛddhi­pāda­caraṇatalasupratiṣṭhitānāṃ caturṣu saṃgrahavastuṣu dīrgharātrakṛta­pari­cayānāṃ pañcāṅgavipratihīṇānāṃ pañcagatisamatikrāntānāṃ ṣaḍaṅgasamanvāgatānāṃ ṣaṭpāramitāparipūrṇānāṃ sapta­bodhyaṅ­gakusumāḍhyānāmaṣṭāṅ­gamārgadeśikānāṃ navānupūrvasamā­patti­kuśalānāṃ daśabalabalināṃ daśadiksamāpūrṇayaśasāṃ daśa­śata­vaśavartiprativiśiṣṭānāṃ trī rātrestrirdivasasya ṣaṭkṛtvo rātriṃdivasasya buddhacakṣuṣā lokaṃ vyavalokya jñānadarśanaṃ pravartate—ko hīyate, ko vardhate, kaḥ kṛcchraprāptaḥ, kaḥ saṃkaṭaprāptaḥ, kaḥ saṃbādhaprāptaḥ, kaḥ kṛcchra­saṃ­kaṭasambādhaprāptaḥ, ko ’pāyaniṃnaḥ, ko ’pāyapravaṇaḥ, ko ’pāyaprāgbhāraḥ, kamahamapāyamārgādvyutthāpya svargaphale mokṣe ca pratiṣṭhāpayeyam, kasya kāmapaṅkanimagnasya hastoddhāramanupradadyām, kamāryadhanavirahitamāryadhanaiśvaryādhipatye pratiṣṭhāpayāmi, kasyānavaropitāni kuśalamūlānyavaropayeyam, kasyāvaropitāni paripācayeyam, kasya pakvāni vimocayeyam, kasyāj­ñāna­timirapaṭala­parya­vanaddhanetrasya jñānāñjanaśalākayā cakṣurviśodhayeyam |
apyevātikramedvelāṃ sāgaro makarālayaḥ |
na tu vaineyavatsānāṃ buddho velāmatikramet (1)|
sarvajñasaṃtānanivāsinī hi kāruṇyadhenurmṛgayatyakhinnā |
vaineyavatsān bhavadurganaṣṭān vatsān praṇaṣṭāniva vatsalā gauḥ (2)|
bhagavān saṃlakṣayati—ayaṃ meṇḍhako gṛhapatiḥ saparivāro bhadraṃkare nagare prativasati |
tasya vaineyakālaṃ pakvamiva gaṇḍaṃ śastrābhinipātamavekṣate |
yannvahaṃ bhadraṃkareṣu janapadeṣu cārikām careyam |

tatra bhagavānāyuṣmanta­māna­ndamā­mantra­yate—gaccha tvamānanda, bhikṣūṇāmārocaya—tathāgato bhikṣavo bhadraṃkareṣu janapadeṣu cārikāṃ cariṣyati |
yo yuṣmākamutsahate tathāgatena sārdhaṃ bhadraṃkareṣu janapadeṣu cārikāṃ cartum, sa cīvarakāṇi pratigṛhṇātu iti |
evaṃ bhadantetyāyuṣmānānando bhagavataḥ pratiśrutya bhikṣūṇāmārocayati—tathāgata āyuṣmanto bhadraṃkareṣu janapadeṣu cārikāṃ cariṣyati |
yo yuṣmākamutsahate tathāgatena sārdhaṃ bhadraṃkareṣu janapadeṣu cārikāṃ caritum, sa cīvarakāṇi pratigṛhṇātu iti |
evamāyuṣmanniti te bhiṣava āyuṣmata ānandasya pratiśrutya pṛṣṭhataḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ samanubaddhā gacchanti |

atha bhagavān dānto dāntaparivāraḥ śāntaḥ śāntaparivāro mukto muktaparivāra āśvasta āśvastaparivāro vinīto vinītaparivāro ’rhannarhatparivāro vītarāgo vītarāgaparivāraḥ prāsādikaḥ prāsādikaparivāraḥ, vṛṣabha iva gogaṇaparivṛtaḥ, siṃha iva daṃṣṭragaṇaparivāraḥ, haṃsarāja iva haṃsagaṇaparivṛtaḥ, suparṇa iva pakṣigaṇaparivṛtaḥ, vipra iva śiṣyagaṇaparivṛtaḥ, suvaidya ivāturagaṇaparivṛtaḥ, śūra iva yodhagaṇaparivṛtaḥ, deśika ivādhvagaṇaparivṛtaḥ, sārthavāha iva vaṇiggaṇaparivṛtaḥ, śreṣṭhīva paurajanaparivṛtaḥ, koṭṭarāja iva mantriygaṇaparivṛtaḥ, cakravartīva putrasahasraparivṛtaḥ, candra iva nakṣatragaṇaparivṛtaḥ, sūrya iva raśmisahasraparivṛtaḥ, dhṛtarāṣṭra iva gandharvagaṇaparivṛtaḥ, virūḍhaka iva kumbhāṇḍagaṇaparivṛto virūpākṣa iva nāgagaṇaparivṛtaḥ, dhanada iva yakṣagaṇaparivṛtaḥ, vemacittirivāsura­gaṇa­pari­vṛtaḥ, śakra iva tridaśagaṇaparivṛtaḥ, brahmeva brahmakāyikaparivṛtah, stimita iva jalanidhiḥ, sajala iva jalanidhiḥ, vimada iva gajapatiḥ, sudāntair­indriya­ira­saṃ­kṣobhiteryāpathapracāro dvātriṃśatā mahā­puruṣalakṣaṇairaśītyānuvyañjanairvi­rāja­tagātro daśabhirbala­iścaturbhirvaiśāradyaistribhiḥ smṛtyupasthānair­mahā­karuṇayā ca |
evaman­eka­guṇa­gaṇa­samanvāgato buddho bhagavāñ janapadacārikayā bhadraṃkaraṃ nagaraṃ saṃprasthitaḥ |
yadā bhagavatā śrāvastyāṃ mahāprātihāryaṃ vidarśitam, nirbhartsitā ānanditā devamanuṣyāḥ, toṣitāni sajjanahṛdayāni, tadā bhagnaprabhāvāstīrthyāḥ pratyantān saṃśritāḥ |
tataḥ kecidbhadraṃkaraṃ nagaraṃ gatvā avasthitāḥ |
taiḥ śrutaṃ śramaṇa gautama āgacchatīti |
śrutvā ca punarvyathitāste parasparaṃ kathayanti—pūrvaṃ tāvadvayaṃ śramaṇena gautamena madhyadeśānnirvāsitāḥ |
sa yadīhāgamiṣyati, niyatamito ’pi nirvāsayiṣyati |
tadupāyasaṃvidhānaṃ kartavyamiti |
te kulopakaraṇaśālā upasaṃkramya kathayanti—dharmalābho dharmalābhaḥ |
te kathayanti—kimidam? avalokitā gamiṣyāmaḥ |
kasyārthāya? dṛṣṭā asmābhiryuṣmākaṃ saṃpattiḥ, yāvadvipattiṃ na paśyāmaḥ |
āryakāḥ, asmākaṃ vipattirbhaviṣyati |
bhavantaḥ, śramaṇo gautamaḥ kṣurāśaniṃ pātayannanekā aputrikā apatikāśca kurvannāgacchati |
āryāḥ, yadyevam, yasminneva kāle sthātavyaṃ tasminneva kāle ’smākaṃ parityāgas triyate |
tiṣṭhata, na gantavyam |
te kathayanti—kiṃ vayaṃ na tiṣṭhāmah? na yūyamasmākaṃ śroṣyatha |
āryāḥ kathayata, śroṣyāmaḥ |
te kathayanti—bhadraṃ­karasāmantakena sarvajanakāyamudvāsya bhadraṃkaraṃ nagaraṃ pravāsayata |
śādvalāni kṛṃṣata |
sthaṇḍilāni pātayata |
puṣpaphalavṛkṣaṃ chedayata |
panīyāni viṣeṇa dūṣayata |
te kathayanti—āryāḥ, tiṣṭhata, sarvamanutiṣṭhāma iti |
te ’vasthitāḥ |
tatastairbhadraṃ­karana­gara­sāmantakena sarvo janakāya udvāsya bhadraṃkaraṃ nagaraṃ pravāsitaḥ, śādvalāni kṛṣṭāni, sthaṇḍilāni pātitāni, puṣpaphalavṛkṣāśchinnāḥ, pānīyāni viṣadūṣitāni |
tataḥ śakro devendraḥ saṃlakṣayati—na mama pratirūpam yadahaṃ bhagavato ’satkāramadhyupekṣeyam |
yena nāma bhagavatā tribhiḥ kalpāsaṃkhyeyairanekair duṣkaraśatasahasraiḥ ṣaṭ pāramitāḥ pari­pūryānuttaraj­ñāna­madhigatam, sa nāma bhagavān sarvalokaprativiśiṣṭaḥ sarvavādavijayī śūnye janapade cārikaṃ cariṣyati |
yannvahaṃ bhagavataḥ saśrāvakasaṃghasya sukhasparśārthāya autsukyamāpadyeyamiti |
tena vātabalāhakānāṃ devaputrāṇāmājñā dattā—gacchata bhadraṃ­karana­gara­sāmantakena, viṣapānīyāni śoṣayata iti |
varṣabalāhakānāṃ devaputrāṇāmājñā dattā—āṣṭāṅgopetasya pānīyasyāpūryateti |
cāturmahārājikā devā uktāh—yūyaṃ bhadraṃkarāṇāṃ janapadānāṃ vāsayateti |
tato vātabalāhakairdeva­putrairviṣadūṣitāni pānīyāni śoṣitāni, varṣabalāhakaistānyeva kūpodapānavāpīsarastaḍāgānyaṣṭāṅgopetasya pānīyasya pūritāni |
cātur­mahā­rājikairdeva­irbhadraṃ­karana­gara­sāmantakaṃ sarvamāvāsitam |
janapadā ṛddhāḥ sphītāḥ saṃvṛttāḥ |
tīrthyair nagara­janakāyasametairavacarakāḥ preṣitāh—gatvā paśyata kīdṛśā janapadā iti |
te gatāḥ paśyantyatiśayena janapadān ṛddhān sphītān |
tata āgatya kathayanti—bhavantaḥ, na kadācidasmābhirevamrūpā janapadā ṛddhāḥ sphītā dṛṣṭapūrvā iti |
tīrthyāḥ kathayanti—bhavantaḥ, vo yastāvadacetanān bhāvānanvāvartayati, sa yuṣmānnānvāvartayiṣyatīti? kuta etat? sarvathā avalokitā bhavantaḥ, apaścimaṃ vo darśanam, gacchāma iti |
te kathayanti—āryāḥ, tiṣṭhata, kim yuṣmākaṃ śramaṇo gautamaḥ karoti? so ’pi pravrajitaḥ, yūyamapi pravrajitā bhikṣācarāḥ |
kimasau yuṣmākaṃ bhikṣāṃ cariṣyatīti? tīrthyāḥ kathayanti—samayena tiṣṭhāmo yadi yūyaṃ kriyākāraṃ kuruta—na kenacicchramaṇaṃ gautamaṃ darśanāyopasaṃkramitavyam |
ya upasaṃkrāmati, sa ṣaṣṭikārṣāpaṇo daṇḍya iti |
taiḥ pratijñātaṃ kriyākāraśca kṛtaḥ |

tato bhagavān janapadacārikāṃ caran bhadraṃkaraṃ nagaramanuprāptaḥ |
bhadraṃkare nagare viharati dakṣiṇāyatane |
ten khalu samayena kapilavastuno brāhmaṇadārikā bhadraṃkare nagare pariṇītā |
tayā prākārasthayā bhagavānandhakāre dṛṣṭaḥ |
sā saṃlakṣayati—ayaṃ bhagavāñ śākyakulanandanaḥ śākyakulādrājyamapahāya pravrajitaḥ |
sa idānīmandhakāre tiṣṭhati |
yadyatra sopānaṃ syāt, ahaṃ pradīpamādāyāvatareyamiti |
tato bhagavatā tasyāścetasā cittamājñāya sopānaṃ nirmitam |
tato hṛṣṭatuṣṭapramuditā pradīpamādāya sopānenāvatīrya yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntā |
upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ purastāt pradīpaṃ sthāpayitvā pādau śirasā vanditvā niṣaṇṇā dharmaśravaṇāya |
tato bhagavatā tasyā āśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśī catruāryasatyasamprativedhikī pūrvavadyāvaccharaṇa­gatā­mabhiprasannāmiti |
atha bhagavāṃstāṃ dārikāmidamavocat—ehi tvaṃ dārike yena meṇḍhako gṛhapatistenopasaṃkrama, upasaṃkramyaivaṃ madvacanādārogyāpaya, evaṃ ca vada—gṛhapate, tvāmuddiśyāhamihāgataḥ, tvaṃ ca dvāraṃ baddhvā sthitaḥ |
yuktametadevamatitheḥ pratipattum yathā tvam pratipanna iti? yadi kathayati—gaṇena kriyākāraḥ kṛta iti, vaktavyah—tava putrasya pañcaśatiko nakulakaḥ kaṭyāṃ baddhastiṣṭhati |
sa yadi śataṃ vā sahasraṃ vā vyayīkaroti, pūryata eva, na parikṣīyate |
na śaknoṣi ṣaṣṭikārṣāpaṇaṃ dattvā āgantumiti? evaṃ bhadanteti sā dārikā bhagavataḥ pratiśrutya saṃprasthitā |
yathāparijñātaiva kenacideva meṇḍakasya gṛhapateḥ sakāśaṃ gatā |
gatvā ca kathayati—gṛhapate bhagavāṃsta ārogyayati |
sa kathayati—vande buddhaṃ bhagavantam |
gṛhapate, bhagavānevamāha—tvāmevāhamuddiśyāgataḥ, tvaṃ ca dvāraṃ baddhvā avasthitaḥ |
yuktametadevamatitheḥ pratipattum yathā tvaṃ pratipanna iti? sa kathayati—dārike, gaṇena kriyākāraḥ kṛtah—na kenacicchramaṇaṃ gautamaṃ darśanāya upasaṃkramitavyam |
ya upasaṃkrāmati, sa gaṇena ṣaṣṭikārṣāpaṇo daṇḍya iti |
gṛhapate, bhagavān kathayati—tava putrasya pañcaśatiko nakulakaḥ kaṭyāṃ baddhastiṣṭhati |
sa yadi śataṃ vā sahasraṃ vā vyayīkaroti, pūryata eva, na parikṣīyate |
na śaknoṣi tvaṃ ṣaṣṭikārṣāpaṇaṃ datvā āgantumiti? sa saṃlakṣayati—na kaścidetajjānīte |
nūnaṃ sarvajñaḥ sa bhagavān |
gacchāmīti |
sa ṣaṣṭikārṣāpaṇān dvāre sthāpayitvā brāhmaṇadārikopadiṣṭena sopānenāvatīrya yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ |
upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā bhagavataḥ purastānniṣaṇṇo dharmaśravaṇāya |
tato bhagavatā meṇḍhakasya gṛhapaterāśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśī caturāryasatyasamprativedhikī dharmadeśanā kṛtā, yāṃ śrutvā meṇḍhakena gṛhapatinā yāvacchrotāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam |
sa dṛṣṭasatyaḥ kathayati—bhagavan, kimeṣo ’pi bhadraṃkaranagaranivāsī janakāya evaṃvidhānāṃ dharmāṇāṃ lābhīte? bhagavānāha—gṛhapate, tvāmāgamya bhūyasā sarva eva janakāyo lābhīte |
tato meṇḍhako gṛhapatirbhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā bhagavato ’ntikāt prakrāntaḥ |
svagṛhaṃ gatvā nagaramadhye kārṣāpaṇānāṃ rāśiṃ vyavasthāpya gāthāṃ bhāṣate— yo draṣṭumicchati jinaṃ jitarāgadoṣaṃ nirbandhamapratisamaṃ karuṇāvadātam |
so ’niścareṇa hṛdayena suniścitena kṣipraṃ prayātu dhanamasya mayā pradeyam (3)|
iti |

janakāyaḥ kathayati—gṛhapate, śreyaḥ śramaṇasya gautamasya darśanam? sa kathayati—śreyaḥ |
te kathayanti—yadyevam, gaṇenaivaṃ kriyākāraḥ kṛto gaṇa eva udghāṭayatu |
ko ’tra virodhah? te kriyākāramudghāṭya nirgantumārabdhāḥ |
tataḥ parasparaṃ saṃghaṭṭanena na śaknuvanti nirgantumiti vajrapāṇinā yakṣeṇa vineyajanānukampayā vajraḥ kṣiptaḥ |
prākārasya khaṇḍaḥ patitaḥ |
anekāni prāṇiśatasahasrāṇi nirgatāni, kānicit kutūhalajātāni, kānicit pūrvakaiḥ kuśalamūlaiḥ saṃcodyamānāni |
te gatvā bhagavataḥ pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā purato niṣaṇṇāḥ |
yāvadbhagavataḥ sāmantakena parṣat saṃnipatitā |
atha baghavāṃstāṃ parṣadamabhyavagāhya purastādbhikṣusaṃghasya prajñapta evāsane niṣadyān­eka­sattva­saṃ­tān­akuśala­mūlasamāropikāṃ dharmadeśanāṃ kṛtavān, yām śrutvā kaiścicchrotāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam, kaiśc­iccha­raṇagamanaśikṣāpadāni gṛhītāni |
bhagavato ’citaściraṃ dharmaṃ deśayato bhojanakālo ’tikrāntaḥ |
meṇḍhako gṛhapatiḥ kathayati—bhagavan bhaktakṛtyaṃ kriyatāmiti |
bhagavānāha—gṛhapate, bhojanakālo ’tikrānta iti |
sa kathayati—bhagavan, kimakāle kalpate? bhagavānāha—dhṛtaguḍaśarkarāpānakāni ceti |
tato meṇḍhakena gṛhapatinā śilpina āhūya uktāh—bhagavato ’kālakhādyakāni śīghraṃ sajjīkuruteti |
tairakālakāni sajjīkṛtāni |
tato meṇḍhakena gṛhapatinā buddhapramukho bhikṣusaṃgho ’kālakhādyakairakālapānakaiśca saṃtarpitaḥ |
tato bhagavān meṇḍhakaṃ gṛhapatiṃ saparivāraṃ satyeṣu pratiṣṭhāpitaṃ karvaṭanivāsinaṃ janakāyam yathābhavyatayā vinīya prakrāntaḥ |

āttamanasaste bhikṣavo bhagavato bhāṣitamabhyanandan |
