35. Asita and the Young Gotama

dakṣiṇāpathe aparo brāhmaṇakumāro ujjenīyaṃ brāhmaṇamahāśālasya putro śyāmo asito varṇena paṇḍito nipuṇo meghavī | tena gurukulāto devā ca mantrā ca śāstrā ca adhīṭā || so dāni adhītavedādhyayano gṛḥāto niṣkramya vindhyaparvataṃ gatvā ṛṣipravrajyāṃ pravrajito mūlaphalapatrabhakṣo rucchavṛttiḥ || tena tahiṃ vindhyaparvate āśramaṃ māpayitvā vāhitakena mārgeṇa yujyantena ghaṭantena vyāyāmantena catvāri dhyānāni niṣpāditāni pañcābhijñā ca sākṣātkṛtā || so caturdhyānalābhī paṃcābhijño bahuśruto vedapārago asito ṛṣi samantena abhijñāto parijñāto | asito ṛṣi divi parighuṣṭo antarīkṣacaro maharddhiko ca mahānubhāvo paṃcamātrehi śiṣyaśatehi sārdhaṃ nālakena ca tahiṃ āśrame prativasati || so taṃ bodhisatvasya jātamātrasya pṛthivīcālaṃ ca dṛṣṭvā mahāntaṃ ca obhāsaṃ dṛṣṭvā manojñāni ca amānuṣyāṇi ca gītavādyaśabdāni śrutvā divyāni puṣpavarṣāṇi patantāni dṛṣṭvā devakoṭīsahasrāṇī ca apsarasahasrāṇi ca divyamālyagandhahastāni khagapathena pūrvāmukham abhipatantāni anyāni ca adbhutaśatāni dṛṣṭvā uddharṣitaromasaṃjāto || kim idaṃ adya jaṃbudvīpasya | iyaṃ adya kasyānubhāvena pṛthivī ca kampati adbhutaśatāni ca prādurbhūtāni || so dāni ṛṣiḥ divyena cakṣuṣā sarvajaṃbudvīpaṃ pratyavekṣati kasya imaṃ tejānubhāvaṃ edṛśaṃ manojñāni ca gītavāditaśabdā niścaranti divyāni tūryaśatāni śruyanti devāś ca devakanyāś ca dṛśyanti divyāni ca puṣpavarṣāṇi pravarṣanti candrādityasahasrāṇi ca dṛśyanti narakasahasreṣu nāgniḥ prajvalati | ekāntasukhasamarpitā ca satvā saṃjātā || so tathā divyena cakṣuṣā adrākṣīt* || purastimena kapilavastusmiṃ nagare rājño śuddhodanasya putro jātā kṛtapuṇyo maheśākhyo mahānubhāvo yasya tejānubhāvena jambudvīpe evaṃrūpāṇi adbhutaśatāni prādurbhūtāni || deśakālena kumāraṃ drakṣyāmi || so dāni kālaṃ ca samayaṃ ca jñātvā kumārasya darśanāya saṃbahulehi śiṣyehi saṃparivṛto vaihāyasena ṛddhiye kapilavastum anuprāpto rājño śuddhodanasya antaḥpuradvāre || amātyā ca pratihāro ca ṛṣiṃ dṛṣṭvā pratyutthitā | kim ājñāpeti bhagavāṃ kenārthaṃ kim āgamanaprayojanaṃ || ṛṣi āha || śuddhodanasya pratihāretha asito ṛṣi darśanakāmo || pratihāreṇa rājño niveditaṃ || asito ṛṣi darśanakāmaḥ || rājā śuddhodano asitasya ṛṣisya āgamanaṃ śrutvā abhijñātasya viśrutasya mahābhāgasya pratihārarakṣam āha || praviśatu ṛṣīti || pratihārarakṣeṇa nirdhāviya ṛṣisya niveditaṃ | praviśatu bhavāṃ ||

ṛṣi praviṣṭo | rājā sāntaḥpuro ṛṣiṃ dṛṣṭvā pratyutthito || abhivādema bhagavantaṃ niṣīdatu bhagavāṃ || ṛṣi rājño jayena vardhāpayitvā niṣaṇṇo || rājā pṛcchati || kiṃ bhagavaṃ āgamanaprayojanaṃ || ṛṣi āha || kumāran te draṣṭukāmo || tasmiṃś ca kāle kumāro anyataraṃ śāntasamādhiṃ samāpanno || teṣām etad abhavat* | prasupto kumāro || tato rājā ṛṣiṃ āha || bhagavaṃ āgamehi muhurtaṃ kuṃāro saṃprati osupto || ṛṣi āha || mahārāja na kumāro osopati || rājā kumārasya mūlaṃ allīno paśyati ca kumāraṃ jāgritaṃ || rājā ṛṣisya vismito | mahābhāgo ṛṣiḥ || rājñā āṇattaṃ | upanāmetha kumāraṃ ṛṣisya || kumāro sūkṣmāyāṃ ajinapraveṇiyaṃ gṛhya ṛṣisya upanāmito || ṛṣi kumārasya dūrato eva kāyena mahāpuruṣalakṣaṇāni dṛṣṭvā aṃjaliṃ mūrdhani kṛtvā pratyusthito || namaskṛtvā kumāro ṛṣiṇā pratigṛhīto || ṛṣiḥ kumārasya dvātriṃ­śatmaḥāpuruṣalakṣaṇāni pratyavekṣati ||

ṛṣiś ca tatra rājakule kumārasya cakravartiśabdaṃ śṛṇoti | naimittikehi kumāro vyākṛtaḥ rājā cakravartī bhaviṣyati || ṛṣisya bhavati || nāyaṃ cakravartī bhaviṣyati | buddho ayaṃ loke bhaviṣyati || ṛṣis tāni lakṣaṇāni dṛṣṭvā na edṛśāni rājño cakravartisya lakṣaṇāni buddhānām edṛśāni lakṣaṇāni bhavanti | buddho ayaṃ loke bhaviṣyati | ahaṃ ca nacireṇa kālena kālakriyāṃ kariṣyāmi | idaṃ ca ratnaṃ na drakṣyāmi | imasya dharmaṃ na śroṣyāmi gaṇottamaṃ ca na drakṣyāmi || ṛṣi prarodī aśrūṇi ca pravartayati || rājā śuddhodano asitaṃ ṛṣiṃ rudantaṃ dṛṣṭvā sāntaḥpuro udvigno jāto || kiṃ bhagavantaṃ kumāraṃ dṛṣṭvā rodasi | mā kumārasya kāṃcid vipattiṃ paśyasi || kumārasya jātamātrasya pṛthivī kampitā ṣaḍvikāraṃ obhāsaḥ loke prādurbhūtaḥ devasahasrehi pūjito divyāni kusumavarṣāṇi divyāni ca tūryasahasrāṇi saṃpravāditāni śabdā niścarensuḥ || kumāre jātamātre kapilavastusmiṃ paṃca kumāraśatāni jātāni paṃca kanyāśatāni paṃca dāsaśatāni paṃca dāsīśatāni saṃjātāni paṃca hastipotaśatāni paṃca aśvaśatāni paṃca nidhānaśatāni prādurbhūtāni paṃcahi rājaśatehi jayavṛddhīye preṣiṭāyo anyāni pi ca āścaryādbhutāni | bhagavāṃ ca kumāraṃ dṛṣṭvā roditi | evaṃ me bhagavaṃ ākhyāhi mā kumārasya kāṃcid vipattiṃ paśyasi || ṛṣir āha || mahārāja kumārasya na kāṃcid vipattiṃ paśyāmi | edṛśānāṃ mahārāja mahāpuruṣāṇāṃ kadācit kahiṃcil loke prādurbhāvo bhavati | ayaṃ mahāpuruṣo prādurbhūtaḥ buddho loke bhaviṣyati | ahaṃ ca vṛddho na drakṣyāmi | dharmaṃ ca deśayiṣyati aupasamikaṃ cāryaṃ ca nirvāṇikaṃ ca taṃ ca na śroṣyāmi | gaṇavaraṃ cāsya na drakṣyāmi buddhavikurvitāni na drakṣyāmi | tad etāṃ mahārāja ātmano mahāvipattiṃ dṛṣṭvā rodāmi || ṛṣiḥ bodhisatvaṃ caturhi kāraṇehi ekāṃśena vyākaritvā buddho yaṃ loke bhaviṣyatīti prakrānto ||

nīvaraṇāni vijahitva ekāgreṇa manasā mama śṛṇotha |
yathā asito parideve utpanne śākiyakumāre ||

asito nāma maharṣiḥ abhūṣi yo vasati vindhyaviṣayasmiṃ |
niyatanicayo mahātmā mahākapila-uttamāṃgaruhaḥ ||

āraṇyaśāstrakuśalo lābhī pañcāna so abhijñāna |
kailāsaśikharavāsī dhanapatir iva guhyakādhipati ||

so vasati kānanamūrdhni mūlaphalam akṛṣṭaṃ rucchāṃ vṛttiṃ |
śiṣyeṇa nālakena sārdhaṃ anyehi ca bahūhi ||

daś­akuśala­karma­sevī praśamadamarato pare ca ovadati |
devaguṇapāramigato ṛṣiḥ paramaśīlasaṃpanno ||

obhāso ca suvipulo prītī lokottara asaṃmuhyantī |
satvā caikāntasukhī abhunsu pṛthivī ca kampesi ||

so tatra saṃniṣaṇṇo paśyati mandāravāṇi kusumāni |
dharaṇītale patitāni divyāni ca kalpapuṣpāṇi ||

paśyati asito ca nabhe ābharaṇaśaṭāni viprakīrṇāni |
sahasrā pradhāvitānāṃ gaganatale devakanyānāṃ ||

madhuraṃ ca kiṃnarīṇāṃ śṛṇoti gītasvaraṃ giriguhāsu |
girinadiyo kūlavahāṃ śamayati kusumākulajaloghāṃ ||

obhāsaṃ pi ca vipulaṃ samantato paśyati daśadiśāsu |
sahasā samutpatantaṃ ravitaruṇamarīcisaṃkāśaṃ ||

etāni ca anyāni ca bahūni āścaryakāni dṛṣṭvāna |
uddharṣitaromakūpo asito cintāmano āsi ||

kin tu khu mahī pracalitā gaganatale dundubhino ca nadanti |
obhāsito ca loko pravarṣati ca puṣpavarṣāṇi ||

na vibhānti candrasūryā lavaṇajalo kṣubhyate asitatoyo |
padmottarīyapaṭalā dṛśyanti kusumākulajalaughā ||

sarve c’ ime drumavarā akālakusumehi + + + cchāditā |
adya phalakusumabharitā surabhī gandhā pravāyanti ||

na ca prajvalate agniḥ nirayasahasreṣu adya divasena |
na ca vedayanti duḥkhaṃ lokāntarikā vipadyamānā ||

na cāpi kṣudhāpipāsā yathā pure jāyate śarīrasmiṃ |
hṛdayaṃ ca me pramuditaṃ kin tu khalu bhaviṣyati adya ||

atibalam udīrṇahāsā kiṃ tu khalu purastime diśābhāge |
dhāvanti devakanyā candanacūrṇaṃ grahetvāna ||

ko na khalu mahānubhāvo utpanno adya jaṃbudvīpasmiṃ |
kasya yaśena yaśavato ayam edṛśako mahābhāvo ||

tahim edṛśaṃ nimittaṃ lokasmiṃ yasya kasyacid bhoti |
buddhānām utpāde edṛśakā bhonti ākārāḥ ||

pṛthivīya patantānāṃ śṛṇoti ākāśe amarasaṃghānāṃ |
utpanno lokanātho buddho hohiṣyati aneyo ||

so dāni pramuditamano gaganatale śruṇiya devasaṃghānāṃ |
adya naravīragarbho buddho lokasmiṃ utpanno ||

so sarvaṃ jambudvīpaṃ olokayi divyalocanehi ṛṣi |
addasa śākyāna kule jāto śuddhodanasuto yaṃ ||

tasyāpi evaṃ dṛṣṭvā jāto diśāsu bodhiya kaulīno |
tatraiṣa buddhaśabdo carati drakṣyāmi taṃ kāle ||

te cāpi kuṭhārihastā kṛṣṇājinasukṛta­uttarā­saṃ­gā |
valkalacīrāṃbaradharā ādāya phalodakam āgami ||

ākāśe nirālambe vāyupathe + + + prakrāmi ṛṣiḥ |
ṛddhiṃ saṃjanayitvā kṣaṇena āgami kapilavastuṃ ||

himavatamūle adarśi nagaraṃ ramyaṃ ādityabandhuguptaṃ |
durdharṣaṃ paraśatrubhiḥ taṃ ca suramaṇīyaṃ tridaśāna iva |
devānāṃ praviśe ṛṣi puraṃ śākiyadarśanārthāye ||

susannibhantaṃ praviśe āpaṇapaṇyakrayaprasaktaṃ pūrṇaṃ |
hṛṣṭajanehi pramuditahayagaja­ratha­patti­saṃ­ghehi ||

so manasā upagacchanto dvāre praviṣṭo śuddhānte + + + |
śuddhodanasya nilayaṃ nilayaṃ yathā devarājasya ||

prāsādaharmiyaṃ taṃ gavākṣavaraśaraṇapaṃ­jaravi­buddhaṃ |
girikūṭaṃ iva galitaṃ paśyati gagane virocentaṃ ||

tasmiṃ vimānamukhye kūṭāgārāṇi rajataśrīmāṇi |
śobhanti karṇikāyo hutāśanahutārcisaṃkāśā ||

garbhagṛhāṇī śubhāni ca santi viśadaśaṃ­khahāraka­saṃ­nibhā |
vimalaravisaṃprakāśā dyotanti kṛtā va candrāṇi ||

dṛśyanti tatra uptā veruliyasya sukṛtehi phalakehi |
gṛhasūcīkāvalīhi vidyughanaprasekavarṇāni ||

paśyanti toraṇāni kanakamayā agnijvālasadṛśāni |
vimalaravisaṃprakāśā dyotanti kṛtā ca candrāṇi ||

kvacitkvacit kālameghasadṛśasamadā pi sṛjanti viya toyaṃ |
kvaci* niśritārkasadṛśā satārakā niścaranti kvacit* ||

mārjārapotakā pi ca kvacitkvacit sahasāvapatanti tahiṃ |
trasyanti ca varhiṇehi kvacitkvacit saṃpatantehi ||

madhuraṃ ca paṃjaragatā kvacitkvacit kokilā nikūjanti |
śukasārikā kvacitkvacid ābharaṇanidānavibhrāntā ||

śuddhaṃ daśasu vidiśāsu caturasraṃ nirmitaṃ su-āviddhaṃ |
durgharṣiyaṃ arībhiḥ sūtragrahasya samupacīrṇaṃ ||

bahu­vidharatna­saṃ­cayāyaṃ aneka­vicitra­saṃ­ghāta­bhūmiyāṃ |
sīho niṣadyati viṣṭaṃ trasati ca udentam ādityaṃ ||

taṃ yugyayānakavigataṃ ceṭīvelāsikāhi ca upetaṃ |
kāṣāyakarburavarṇaṃ varṣavarasamākulaṃ praviśe ||

preṣya­śata­yāna­kalilaṃ āryajanasamākulaṃ śucisugandhaṃ |
praviśe bhavanaduvāraṃ prāpto jaṭilo nyasaṃrodhaṃ ||

osaraṇe ca bharitā addaśi pramadā sthitasaṃbhrāntena |
pragṛhītakhaḍgahastā ati-r-iva priyadarśanapralāpā ||

asito cāsau vyakto gambhīro sarvaśāstrasuvidhijño |
pratihārarakṣam avoca nivedaye śākyarājasya ||

kālo smi vikhyāto bhāradvājo ham asmi gotreṇa |
jāto smi ārya ti viṣaye sikhare vindhyasmiṃ viharāmi ||

sādhv ārya tti śrutadharo pratiśruṇiya prāpaye mahīpatino |
tad vacanaṃ anavaśeṣaṃ śrutvā ca praveśayitvā ca ||

pratibhāṇito praviṣṭo siṃhahanusya svargasadṛśanilayaṃ |
indra iva nandanaṃ gato saṃkīrṇaṃ apsaragaṇehi ||

vardhāpaye jayena phalāni upanāmaye asitanāmo |
pratyagrahesi rājā svāgataṃ bhagavato ti ca avocat* ||

atha kanakam aṣṭapādaṃ suvicitrakilañjakaṃ maṇivicitraṃ |
prakṣaptam āsanavaraṃ tatra niṣīde anujñāto ||

paryaṃkasmiṃ niṣaṇṇo paṃcābhijño ṛṣī maharddhīko |
bhaktena nimantreti svāmaṃ śuddhodano rājā ||

bhaktaṃ kṛtaṃ prabhūtaṃ pratiśruṇu taṃ anāmayan tu te bhagavan* |
icchāma te kumāraṃ draṣṭuṃ yadi te anumataṃ syāta ||

svāgatam anurāgataṃ te supto tāvat priyadarśi kumāro |
drakṣyasi tvaṃ prativibuddhaṃ vigrahaṃ iva jātarūpasya ||

pratibuddhaṃ ca kumāraṃ praveṇiyaṃ aṣṭamaṃgalakṛtāyaṃ |
upanāmayi mātusmā ghanavivarakṛtaṃ ca ādityaṃ ||

dṛṣṭvāna taṃ ṛṣivaro kuṇḍalam iva paṭṭakambalanyastaṃ |
abhyutthahitva tvaritaṃ aṃkena pratīcchati kumāraṃ ||

aṅkena gṛhya niśāmya dvātriṃśallakṣaṇeṣu upāgataṃ |
tathā anuvyaṃjanehi prarodi ākhaṇḍalasamāno ||

taṃ aśrupūrṇanayanaṃ rājā śuddhodano idam avocat* |
kiṃ dāni te kumāraṃ dṛṣṭvā daurmanasyam utpannaṃ ||

yo tadaho jātamātro sapta padān uttarāmukho agami |
taṃ tuvaṃ brāhmaṇa dṛṣṭvā kiṃ rodiṣi śrotum icchāmi ||

yasmiṃ tadaho jāto chatraṃ ca vījanīṃ ca grahetvāna |
asthānsu antarīkṣe dṛṣṭvā kiṃ rodiṣi brahma ||

yasmiṃ tadaho jāte sarvo obhāsito abhūl loko |
taṃ tuvaṃ brāhmaṇa dṛṣṭvā kiṃ rodiṣi śrotum icchāmi ||

yasmiṃ tadaho jāte udupānā duve nabhe udgacchensuḥ |
taṃ tuvaṃ brāhmaṇa dṛṣṭvā kiṃ rodiṣi śrotum icchāmi ||

yasmiṃ tadaho jāte devā chatraṃ nabhasmiṃ dhārensuḥ |
taṃ tuvaṃ brāhmaṇa dṛṣṭvā kiṃ rodiṣi śrotum icchāmi ||

yasmiṃ tadaho jāte devā mandāravāṇi prakirensuḥ |
taṃ tuvaṃ brāhmaṇa dṛṣṭvā kiṃ rodiṣi śrotum icchāmi ||

yasmiṃ tadaho jāte acetanā saṃprakampitā vasudhā |
taṃ tuvṃ brāhmaṇa dṛṣṭvā kiṃ rodiṣi śrotum icchāmi ||

yasmiṃ tadaho jāte lavaṇajalo kṣobhito asitatoyo |
taṃ tuvaṃ brāhmaṇa dṛṣṭvā kiṃ rodiṣi śrotum icchāmi ||

yasmiṃ tadaho jāte nabhasi gatā dundubhiyo vādyanti |
taṃ tuvaṃ brāhmaṇa dṛṣṭvā kiṃ rodiṣi śrotum icchāmi ||

yasmiṃ tadaho jāte paṃca śatā jātā śākyaputrāṇāṃ |
taṃ tuvaṃ brāhmaṇa dṛṣṭvā kiṃ rodiṣi śrotum icchāmi ||

yasmiṃ tadaho jāte paṃca śatā jātā śākyakanyānāṃ ||

taṃ tuvaṃ brāhmaṇa dṛṣṭvā kiṃ rodiṣi śrotum icchāmi |
yasmiṃ tadaho jāte paṃca śatā jātā mahya dāsānāṃ |
taṃ tuvaṃ brāhmaṇa dṛṣṭvā kiṃ rodiṣi śrotum icchāmi ||

yasmiṃ tadaho jāte paṃca śatā jātā mahya dāsīnāṃ |
taṃ tuvaṃ brāhmaṇa dṛṣṭvā kiṃ rodiṣi śrotum icchāmi ||

yasmiṃ tadaho jāte mahya turagāṇāṃ paṃca śatā jātā |
taṃ tuvaṃ brāhmaṇa dṛṣṭvā kiṃ rodiṣi śrotum icchāmi ||

yasmiṃ tadaho jāte paṃca śatā gajapotānāṃ jātā |
taṃ tuvaṃ brāhmaṇa dṛṣṭvā kiṃ rodiṣi śrotum icchāmi ||

yasmiṃ tadaho jāte paṃca nidhiśatā mukhāni darśenti |
taṃ tuvaṃ brāhmaṇa dṛṣṭvā kiṃ rodiṣi śrotumiccḥāmi ||

yasmiṃ tadaho jāte maṇḍalino rājāno praṇata mahyaṃ |
taṃ tuvaṃ brāhmaṇa dṛṣṭvā kiṃ rodiṣi śrotumiccḥāmi ||

yasya rājācāryā brāhmaṇa saṃdarśanāya upayānti |
taṃ tuvaṃ brāhmaṇa dṛṣṭvā kiṃ rodiṣi śrotum icchāmi ||

yaṃ paśyitvā manujā bhavanti hṛṣṭā sukhī udagrā ca |
taṃ tuvaṃ brāhmaṇa dṛṣṭvā kiṃ rodiṣi śrotum icchāmi ||

vyapanaya brāhmaṇa śokaṃ bhava muditamano sukhaṃ pratilabhāhi |
eṣo bhaviṣyati nṛpo saptaratanavā pṛthivipālo ||

evaṃ ukte avacī asito sitasāhvayaṃ idam avocat* |
aśrūṇi pramārjanto + + + + + + vyākṛto ṛṣibhiḥ ||

ānandahutāsana­bahu­taruṇārkanibho na so puruṣasiṃho |
hohiti narapati rājā hohiti śāstā anabhibhūto ||

eṣo hi trīhi kramehi traidhātukaṃ laṃghiyā anavaśeṣaṃ |
śivam amaraṃ nirantarāyaṃ adhigamiṣyati uttamaṃ dharmaṃ ||

jīrṇo ahaṃ gatavayo daharo ca narottamo acirajāto |
kālagato bhaviṣyaṃ ahaṃ yada bodhiṃ prāpsyati kumāro ||

buddho ayaṃ bhaviṣyati sarvajño sarvadharmavaśavartī |
svākhyātadharmavinaye ahaṃ ca jīrṇo ti rodāmi ||

nāpi mahyaṃ maraṇabhayaṃ kahiṃ tu jāto na mrīyate manujo |
buddhaṃ tu apratisamaṃ na drakṣyan tena rodāmi ||

na khu mahyaṃ maraṇabhayaṃ kahiṃ tu jāto na mrīyate manujaḥ |
dharmaṃ tu opasamikaṃ na śroṣyaṃ tena rodāmi ||

na khu mahyaṃ maraṇabhayaṃ kahiṃ tu jāto na mrīyate martyo |
saṃghaṃ guṇasāgaram ahaṃ na drakṣyan tena rodāmi ||

yo buddho bodhayiṣyati prajām imāṃ bhogehi ciraprasuptāṃ |
so yaṃ prādurbhūto ahan tu jīrṇo ti rodāmi ||

yo mukto mocayiṣyati prajām imāṃ rāgabandhanair baddhāṃ |
so yaṃ prādurbhūto ahan tu jīrṇo ti rodāmi ||

yo mukto mocayiṣyati prajām imāṃ mohabandhanair baddhāṃ |
so yaṃ prādurbhūto ahan tu jīrṇo ti rodāmi ||

yo mukto mocayiṣyati prajām imāṃ rāgadoṣamoheṣu |
so yaṃ prādurbhūto ahan tu jīrṇo ti rodāmi ||

yo ātmanā arogo bhūtvā anyāṃ api kāhiti arogāṃ |
so yaṃ prādurbhūto ahan tu jīrṇo ti rodāmi ||

yo ātmanā aśoko bhūtvā anyāṃ api kāhiti aśokāṃ |
so yaṃ prādurbhūto ahan tu jīrṇo ti rodāmi ||

yo ātmanā viśalyo bhūtvā anyāṃ api kāhiti viśalyāṃ |
so yaṃ prādurbhūto ahan tu jīrṇo ti rodāmi ||

sukhitā ime naramarū kāśipure dharmarājaṃ drakṣyanti |
cakraṃ pravartayantaṃ ahan tu jīrṇo ti rodāmi ||

sukhitā ime naramarū drakṣyante gaṇavarasya madhyagataṃ |
amṛtaṃ pratibhajamānaṃ ahan tu jīrṇo ti rodāmi ||

vyādhi jarā ca maraṇaṃ antarāyakarā bahū manuṣyāṇāṃ |
āśvāstā utpanno ahaṃ anāśvasto rodāmi ||

tathā ṛṣi ālapitvā bahūni karuṇāyanto vepitvā |
anuśaṃse vācāye naravaradamakaṃ tadā dṛṣṭvā ||

prācīnadiśaṃ avoca ihāgato naruttamaṃ gaveṣanto |
na hi sulabho utpādo buddhāna adāntadamakānāṃ ||

so dāni bodhisatvaṃ bahuśo abhipradakṣiṇaṃ caritvāna |
āmantraye narapatiṃ gacchāmi snigdhavatīṃ bhavān detu ||

buddha­nirghoṣaṃ śrutvā gacchesi vināyakottamasakāśaṃ |
carayesi brahmacaryaṃ vacanaparikaro ca tasya syāt* ||

sādhu iti pratiśrutvā asitasya nārado idaṃ vacanaṃ |
pravrajiya gaṇajyeṣṭho abhūṣi arahā vidhutakleśo ||

kātyāyanasya sagotraṃ nāmena nāradaṃ jinasya sutaṃ |
vanevāsinaṃ + + + vandatha parinirvṛtaṃ sthaviraṃ ||

taṃ nirvṛtaṃ samaśāntaṃ nirupadhiṃ sarvopadhikṣayavimuktaṃ |
sarvaprapañcātītaṃ vandatha parinirvṛtaṃ sthaviraṃ ||

etāni buddhasya ameyabuddhino
kāye aśītiṃ anuvyaṃjanāni |
yehi sya kāyo satataṃ alaṃkṛto
devātidevasya narottamasya ||

praśastāni yasya duve triṃśatiṃ ca
aśītiṃ ca kāye anuvyaṃjanāni |
samantā ca vyāmaprabhā niścarensuḥ
kathaṃ nāma vijñū jine na prasīde ||

śatakhutto samādāya yaṃ puṇyaṃ sarvasattvanāṃ |
tenāsya lakṣaṇavaraṃ kāye ekaṃ nivartaye ||
