yadā bhagavān abhiniṣkrānto anuttarāṃ samyaksaṃbodhim abhisaṃbuddho pravṛttapravara­dharma­cakro taṃ bhikṣuhi śrutaṃ || bhagavato kumārabhūtasya udyānavanagatasya kanyānām ābharaṇāni viśrāṇentasya yaśodharā hriyāyantī kumārasya allīnā || bhikṣu bhagavantaṃ pṛcchati || kathaṃ bhagavaṃ yaśodharā bhagavato kumārabhūtasya hriyāyantī allīnā || bhagavān āha || na hi bhikṣavaḥ idānīm eva yaśodharā mama hriyāyāntī allīnā | anyadāpi eṣā mama hriyāyantī allīnā || bhikṣū āhansuḥ || anyadāpi bhagavaṃ || bhagavān āha || anyadāpi bhikṣavo ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo ’tītam adhvānaṃ nagare vārāṇasī kāśijanapade brāhmaṇo kauśikasagotro | so kāmeṣu ādīnavaṃ dṛṣṭvā anuhimavantaṃ ṛṣipravrajyāṃ pravrajito || tena tahiṃ anuhimavante gaṃgākūle āśramaṃ māpetvā pūrvarātrāpararātraṃ jāgarikāyogam anuyuktena viharantena vāhitakena mārgeṇa catvāri dhyānāny utpāditāni paṃcābhijñā sākṣātkṛtā | candramasūryaparimārjako maharddhiko mahānubhāvo ṛṣi saṃvṛtto na ca saṃvibhāgaśīlo || tasya dāni jñātiko kāyasya bhedād gandharvakāyikeṣu deveṣūpapanno paṃcaśikho nāma gandharvaputro || so devabhūto taṃ kauśikaṃ smarati | kahiṃ kauśika ākāśe pravṛttajīvo ti mṛto ti || so samanvāharati | paśyati taṃ kauśikaṃ ṛṣipravrajyāṃ pravrajitaṃ | anuhimavante gaṃgākūle sa āśrame prativasati asaṃvibhāgaśīlo || tena śakrasya devānām indrasya ārocitaṃ || yo mama manuṣyabhūtasya jñāti priyo manāpo so ṛṣipravrajyāṃ pravrajito anuhimavante gaṃgākūle āśramapade prativasati so ca asaṃvibhāgaśīlo | tasya anugrahārthāya upasaṃkramema saṃvibhāgasmiṃ niyojema ||

śakro dāni kauśikasya ṛṣisya anugrahārthaṃ āhāradeśakāle candramasūryehi sārdhaṃ mātalinā ca saṃgrāhakena paṃcaśikhena ca devaputreṇa brāhmaṇaveśam abhinirmiṇitvā + + + + + + kauśikasya ṛṣisya āśramaṃ āhāradeśakāle ekam eko upasaṃkrānto | sa ca sunakho nānāprakārāṇi uccāvacāni varṇāni upadarśeti || kauśika āha ||

nāhaṃ kriṇāmi nāpi vikriṇāmi
na cāpi me sannidhi asti kiṃcit* |
parīttarūpaṃ mama bhojanaṃ imaṃ
syāmākaprasthaṃ nalam eṣo duvinnaṃ ||

śunakha āha ||

alpāto alpakaṃ dadyāt* anumadhyāto madhyimaṃ |
bahukāto bahukaṃ dadyāt* adānaṃ nopapadyati ||

natvāhaṃ kauśika brūmi bhuṃjāhi ca dadāhi ca |
āryamārgasamāpanno ekāṃśaṃ vindate sukhaṃ ||

candro pi upasaṃkrānto || kauśiko āha ||

nāhaṃ kriṇāmi nāpi vikriṇāmi
na cāpi me sannidhi asti kiṃcit* |
parīttarūpaṃ mama bhojanaṃ imaṃ
syāmākaprasthaṃ nalameṣo trayāṇāṃ ||

candra āha

vaḍiśaṃ so saṃgilati dīrghasūtraṃ ayomayaṃ |
yo atithismiṃ āsīne adattvā bhuṃjati bhojanaṃ ||

natvāhaṃ kauśika brūmi bhuṃjāhi ca dadāhi ca |
āryamārgasamāpanno ekāṃśaṃ vindate sukhaṃ ||

sūryo pi upasaṃkrānto || kauśika āha ||

nāhaṃ kriṇāmi nāpi vikriṇāmi
na cāpi me saṃnidhi asti kiṃcit* |
parīttarūpaṃ mama bhojanaṃ imaṃ
syāmākaprasthaṃ nalameṣo caturṇāṃ ||

sūrya āha ||

moghaṃ tasya hutaṃ bhoti moghaṃ cāpi samāhitaṃ |
yo atithismiṃ āsīne adattvā bhuṃjati bhojanaṃ ||

natvāhaṃ kauśika brūmi bhuṃjāhi ca dadāhi ca |
āryamārgasamāpanno ekāṃśaṃ vindate sukhaṃ ||

mātali pi upasaṃkrānto || kauśika āha ||

nāhaṃ kriṇāmi nāpi vikriṇāmi
na cāpi me saṃnidhi asti kiṃci |
parīttarūpaṃ mama bhojanaṃ imaṃ

satyaṃ tasya hutaṃ bhoti satyaṃ cāpi samāhitaṃ |

āryamārgasamāpanno ekāṃśaṃ vindate sukhaṃ ||

sarasvatīṃ so juhoti cāhutāṃ gamaye api |

natvāhaṃ kauśika brūmi bhuṃjāhi ca dadāhi ca |
āryamārgasamāpanno ekāṃśaṃ vindate sukhaṃ ||

kośika āha ||

udāravarṇā iti brāhmaṇā ime
ayaṃ ca vo sunakho kisya hetu |
uccāvacāṃ varṇanibhāṃ nidarśaye
ākhyātha me ko nu bhave bhavanto ||

śakra āha ||

candro ca sūryo ca ihāgatā te
ayaṃ ca so mātali devasārathiḥ |
ahaṃ ca śakro tridaśāna īśvaro
ayaṃ ca so paṃcaśikho + + + ti ||

yasyaiṣa pratigṛhṇāti annaṃ ca pānaṃ ca kauśika |
pāṇisvaraṃ kumbhathūnaṃ mṛdaṃgānāṃ svarāṇi ca |
suptaṃ na pratibodhenti pratibuddho ca nandati ||

tuvaṃ no jñātī purimāsu jātiṣu
tvaṃ kauśikā matsaripāpadharmaḥ |
tuhyānukaṃpāya ihāgatā sma

ye matsarī roṣakapāpadharmā
pradveṣakā śramaṇabrāhmaṇānāṃ |
pāpāni karmāṇi samācaritvā
ito cyutāḥ te nirayaṃ vrajanti ||

ye ceha dānāni dadanti paṇḍitā
prasannacittāḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇeṣu |
puṇyāni kṛtvā iha jīvaloke
ito cyutāste sugatiṃ vrajanti ||

kauśika āha ||

eṣo adyaivaṃ kariṣyāmi puṇyaṃ
dāsyāmi dānaṃ śramaṇabrāhmaṇeṣu |
etehi dadyād aham annapānaṃ
nāhaṃ adattvā amṛtaṃ pi pāsye ||

evaṃ ca me dadato sarvakālaṃ
bhogā ca me ca sarvā kṣipihanti |
tato ahaṃ sugatiṃ pravrajiṣyaṃ
prahāya kāmāni tathādhikāni ||

nagottame girivaragandhamādane
modenti devavarādhipātmajā |
upāgatā ṛṣivara sarvi pūjituṃ
supuṣpitāṃ drumavaraśākhāṃ gṛhṇiya ||

śuciṃ sugandhāṃ tridaśehi satkṛtāṃ
supuṣpitāṃ amaravarehi sevitāṃ |
śākhāṃ dadensur nama astu māriṣa
yathaiva mo śakra tathaiva so tuvaṃ ||

tāṃ yācamānāṃ anudrakṣi brāhmaṇa
ityabrīṣi kalahaṃ udīraye |
na mahyaṃ puṣpehi ihārtha vidyati
yā yeva vo śreyatarā (gṛhṇātu) ||

tadiyaṃ tvaṃ eva samīkṣa brāhmaṇa
jānāhi mo māriṣa yā nu śreyā |
yasyaiva no māriṣa tāṃ dayiṣyasi
sā eva no śreyatarā bhaviṣyati ||

akāryam etaṃ vacanaṃ sugātrikā
sa brāhmaṇo krodhaśabdaṃ viyāhare |
gatvāna bhūtādhipatiṃ hi pṛcchatha
so eva vo jñāsyati yā nu śreyā ||

tadāpi tāyo paramārthadarśino
udārikā varṇavareṇa arthikā |
gatvāna vocantridaśādhipasya
jānāhi mo māriṣa kā nu śreyā ||

tān dṛṣṭvā aṇāttamanā puraṃdaro
ityabravīt* āttamano sarveṣu |
+ + + yuṣme sadṛśā sugātrikā
ko thehapūrvaṃ kalahaṃ udīraye ||

yo sarvaloke carati mahāmuniḥ
nāmena so nārado satyavikramo |
so abravīt parvate gandhamādane
gatvāna bhūtādhipatiṃ hi pṛcchatha ||

ito so uttarato diśāyāṃ
gaṃgāya kūle himavantapārśve |
so kauśiko dullabhapānabhojano
tasya sudhāṃ preṣayi devasārathiḥ ||

agniṃ juhantasya pratiṣṭhato mama
prabhaṃkaro lokatamonudo yathā |
ādityalokasmiṃ tatheva īryasi
kā devatā kisya ihāgato si ||

śaṃkhopamaṃ śveta-atulyasannibhaṃ
manojñagandhaṃ priyarūpadarśanaṃ |
na dṛṣṭapūrvaṃ maya cakṣuṣedṛśaṃ
kā devatā kin tu dadāsidaṃ mama ||

ahaṃ mahendreṇa maharṣi preṣito
sudhāhariṃ tvāṃ tvaritaṃ upāgami |
jānāhi māṃ mātaliṃ devasārathiṃ
bhuṃjāhimāṃ kāṃkṣiṣu bhogamuttamaṃ ||

bhuktvā himāṃ dvādaśa + + + hi pāpakā
kṣudhāpipāsāṃ aratiṃ jvaraṃ kramā |
krodhopanāhaṃ ca vivādapaiśūnyaṃ
śītoṣṇatandrītarasaṃ ca uttamaṃ ||

na mātale kalpati mahya bhuṃjituṃ
pūrve adattvā iti bruvan anuttamaṃ |
na cāpi ekasya na mahya varṇitaṃ
asaṃvibhāgo hi sukhaṃ na vindati ||

mitraṃ opāyikaṃ pāripanthikā
strīghātakā ye paharanti arthaṃ |
sarve pi te matsarine samā matā
prāptaṃ adattvā amṛtaṃ pi nāse ||

tā preṣitā devarājena ātmajā
kanyā catasro tapanīyasannibhā |
sudhāṃ pi ādāya pratigrahārhāṃ
taṃ āśramaṃ yatra abhūṣi kauśikaḥ ||

dṛṣṭvā tu tāḥ arthadarśo matīmāṃ
prabhāsayantīyo anantarāśritāḥ |
sthitā catasro pramadā caturdiśaṃ
so dāni kauśika adhyabhāṣitha ||

purimāṃ diśan tiṣṭhasi devate tvaṃ
alaṃkṛtā tāravarā ca oṣadhī |
pṛcchāmi te kāṃcanavedivigrahe
ākhyāhi me tvaṃ katamāsi devatā ||

śiro ham asmi manujeṣu saṃmatā
akṣudrasattvā parisevino sadā |
sukheṣiṇī tuhya sukāśamāgatā
taṃ māṃ sudhāye varaprajña bhāgaya ||

śīlenupetaṃ caraṇena buddhiye
upetasattvaṃ praguṇena karmaṇā |
tvayā upeto śirijātimantiyā
preṣeti dāsaṃ viya bhogavāṃ sukhī ||

atho pi dāse alaso aśilpako
sudurgato vāpi naro arūpavāṃ |
tvayā upeto śirijātimantiyā
tad idam asādhu yad idaṃ tvayā kṛtaṃ ||

prabhāsayantī yaśasā yaśasvinī
manorameśāhūyanāṃ diśāṃ prati |
pṛcchāmi tvāṃ kāṃcanavedivigrahe
ācikṣa me tvaṃ katamāsi devatā ||

śraddhāham asmi manujeṣu sammatā
akṣudrasattvā pratisevinī sadā |
sukheṣiṇī tuhya sakāśam āgatā
taṃ māṃ sudhāye varaprajña bhāgaya ||

bhāryāpi me kho sadṛśā hi satkṛtā
kalyāṇadharmā ca pativratā ca |
prahāya svakulaṃ dhītarā ca
karoti śraddhāṃ puna kumbhakāśiye ||

śīlaṃ śrutaṃ cāpi athāpi saṃyamaṃ
śraddhā satī yatra + + + ekadā |
naiṣā sāvadyena vighātadarśanā
tad idam asādhu yad idaṃ tvayā kṛtaṃ ||

sā me va santike api ca vadyase
vijāne mūḍhāsi dhūrtānuvartinī |
na edṛśī arhati āsanodakaṃ
kuto sudhāṃ gaccha na me tvaṃ rocasi ||

jahāti rātrī aruṇasmiṃ udgate
sā tiṣṭhase tāravarā va oṣadhī |
pṛcchāmi te kāṃcanavedivigrahe
ācikṣa me tvaṃ katamāsi devatā ||

mṛgīva bhrāntā sarabhāya varjitā
nirākṛtā mandaṃ mamaṃ avekṣase |
kā te sahāyā mṛdugātri lakṣate
na bhāyase ekikā tuvaṃ devatā ||

na me sahāyā iha āgatā kauśika

āśā sudhāye iha āgatāsmi
tan me sudhāye varaprajña bhāgaya ||

āśāya kṣetrāṇi kṛṣanti karṣakā
saputradārā saṃghaṭanti ekato |
naṃ varṣa harati asanī ca utthitā
tad idam asādhu yad idaṃ tvayā kṛtaṃ ||

āśāye eke manujā dhanārthikā
nāvāṃ samāruhya taranti (sāgaraṃ) |
ālambane tatra sīdanti athāpi ca
duḥkhaṃ nigacchanti vinaṣṭapuṇyāḥ ||

sā me va santike api ca vadyase
vijāne mūḍhāsi dhūrtānuvartinī |
na edṛśī arhati āsanodakaṃ
kuto sudhāṃ gaccha na me tvaṃ rocasi ||

kā dṛṣṭāsi + + + pinaddhamañjarī ||

sīhāṃgadā kāṃcipramṛṣṭadhāraṇī |
kuśāgraraktā supinaddhakuṇḍalā
uśīravarṇā pratibhāya śobhasi ||

gate yathā prāvṛṣi atra sārade
alaṃkṛtā lohitamālinī + + + |
pṛcchāmi tvāṃ kāṃcanavedivigrahe
ācikṣa me tvaṃ katamāsi devatā ||

hirīyamasmi manujāna sammatā
akṣudrasattvapratisevinī sadā |
sukheṣiṇī tuhya sakāśam āgatā
na tu tvāṃ śakromi maharṣi yācituṃ ||

kāvarṇadhātu iha strī na vidyati
jānāmi dharmeṇa sugātri lakṣase |
te tāṃ ayācantiye prasavāmy ahaṃ
sudhāmahaṃ jīvitaṃ taṃ dadāmi te ||

tvām evahaṃ kāṃcanavedivigrahe
āmantrayitvāna pravekṣyi āśramaṃ |
tvām evahaṃ sarvaguṇena pūjaye
tava adattvā amṛtaṃ pi no alaṃ ||

taṃ āśramaṃ puṣpavicitrasaṃstṛtaṃ
dvijehi ghuṣṭaṃ rucirasvarehi |
sā succhavī taṃ ca praviṣṭā āśrama
udakupetaṃ phalamūlaśobhitaṃ ||

vṛkṣāgraṇīnāṃ bahavo nupuṣpitā
sālā piyālā panasā ca tindukā |
śobhāṃjanā loghra + + + pāṭalā
supuṇyagandhā mucilindakā ca ||

kuvalā tamālā bahavo nuveśanaṃ
aśvatthanyagrodha tathaivudumbarā |
tilakā kadambā ca tathaiva campakā
prasātikā śyāmaka tatra taṇḍulā ||

tatrāpinaddhaprāvṛto kuśāmayo
supuṇyagandho ajinopasevito |
āśītakurvī harate niṣaṇṇo
niṣīda kalyāṇasukhena āsane ||

tasyetavāye kuṣicāya kauśikaḥ
jayettamānaye jaṭāyantaṃ dhanena |
nehi pātrehi sudhāṃ svayaṃ dade
sā adhyabhāṣi tvaritā mahāmuniṃ ||

taṃ saṃprati gṛhyāṇa prītamānasā
ityabravī āttamanā jaṭādharaṃ |
kṛtā tvayā kauśika mahya pūjā
gacchāmi dāni tridaśāna sevituṃ ||

sā kauśikenānumatā dyutīmatā
jigīṣamāṇā tridaśāṃ upāgami |
gatvāna sā avaca sahasradarśanaṃ
iyaṃ sudhā vāsava yo hi me jayo ||

so tatra yo preṣita eva mātali
parivṛtto devasabhāya agrato |
hirī sudhāṃ kenabhilabdhe hetunā
ityabravī tvaṃ punar evam āhūya ||

taṃ so vatārād vinivartayed rathaṃ
jāmbūnadaṃ santapanīyasannibhaṃ |
prajvālyamānaṃ ravikarasaṃnibhaṃ
alaṃkṛtaṃ suvarṇabimbavicitraṃ ||

gatāś ca hastikapivyāghradvīpiyo
mṛgā ca vaiḍūryamayā upāgatā |
taṃ puṣkalā jyotīrasamayā śubhā
maṇīvaiḍūryamayā ca īdṛśā ||

heṣṭā manesī upariṃ ca kupsaraṃ
suvarṇacandrā ca rathe upāgatā |
taṃ yānaśreṣṭhaṃ abhiruhya mātali
daśa diśāyo abhinandayet* mahīṃ ||

nagāṃś ca śailāṃś ca vanaspatīṃ ca
sasāgarāṃ kampamānāṃ vasundharāṃ |
so kṣipram eva tvaritaṃ upāgami
tam āśramaṃ yatra abhūṣi kauśiko ||

so mātali + + + + + +
dūto ahaṃ pṛcchati te puraṃdaro |
śirīya śraddhāya ca āśāyāpi ca
hirī śreyā kena guṇena manyasi ||

śraddhā anityā puna devasārathi
āśā visaṃvādikasaṃyatā mama ||

hirī manāpā pariśuddhakevalā
saṃgrāmaśīrṣe na ratā pravarjitā |
vipaśyamānā surabhī upadrutā
hirir nivāreti svacittamātmano ||

hirīha śreṣṭhā manujeṣu mātali
dahare kāṃkṣyati mahallike ca |
priyaṃ ca bhrātṛvyaṃ karoti caṇḍaṃ
hirir nivāreti svacittamātmano ||

ko te imāṃ kauśika dṛṣṭam* + + +
ugro hi indro athavā sahāṃpati |
indro tava indrasagotra kāṃkṣati
tasyaiva bhāvasahavratānuja ||

sa kauśikaḥ taṃ jahiyāna ucchrayaṃ
śīlopapeto asadhuryabhūto |
puṇyāni kṛtvā vipulāni āśrame
kāyasya bhedāt svargeṣu modati ||

syāt khalu punaḥ bhikṣavo yuṣmākam evaṃ anyo so tena kālena teva samayena nārado nāma ṛṣi kauśikasagotro | na khalv etad evaṃ draṣṭavyaṃ | tat kasya hetoḥ | ahaṃ so bhikṣavas tena kālena tena samayena nārado nāma ṛṣir abhūṣi kauśikagotro || syāt khalu punar bhikṣavo evam asyā anyā sā tena kālena tena samayena śakrasya devānām indrasya hirī nāma dhītā āsi | na khalv etad evaṃ draṣṭavyaṃ | tat kasya hetor bhikṣavo | eṣā eva yaśodharā tena kālena tena samayena śakrasya devānām indrasya hirī nāma dhītā abhūṣi | tadāpi eṣā mama hrīyāyantī allīnā | etarahiṃ pi mama eṣā hrīyāyantī allīnā ||
