45. The Śiri Jātaka

bhikṣū bhagavantam āhansuḥ || vīryeṇa bhagavatā yaśodharā labdhā || bhagavān āha || na bhikṣavo etarahiṃ eva mayā yaśodharā vīryeṇa labdhā anyadāpi mayā eṣā vīryeṇa labdhā || bhikṣū bhagavantam āhansuḥ || anyadāpi bhagavan* || bhagavān āha || anyadāpi bhikṣavaḥ ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavaḥ atītamadhvāne vāravālinagare brāhmaṇaḥ trayāṇāṃ vedānāṃ pārago sanirghaṇṭhakaiṭhabhānāṃ itihāsapaṃcamānāṃ akṣarapadavyākaraṇe kuśalo so yaṃ ācāryo brāhmaṇavedeṣu paṃca māṇavakaśatāni vedāṃ mantrāṃ vācayati || tasya dāni brāhmaṇasya śirir nāma dhītā prāsādikā darśanīyā paramāye śubhāye varṇapuṣkaratāye samanvāgatā ||

tasyedāni brāhmaṇasya samudrapaṭṭane yajñaṃ kārayantena yājyena tasya uṣādhyāyasya preṣitaṃ | svayaṃ vāgacche kaṃcid vā preṣehi arthamātraṃ te dāsyāmi || so teṣāṃ paṃcānāṃ vaṭukaśatānām āha || ko vo tra utsahati samudrapaṭṭanaṃ gantuṃ amukasya sārthavāhasya mūlaṃ | yo gamiṣyati tasya śirikāṃ māṇavikāṃ dāsyāmi || tatra māṇavako paṇḍito ca utthānavanto ca vīriyavanto ca | tasya tahiṃ śiriye adhimātraṃ premaṃ | so utsahito upādhyāya ahaṃ gamiṣyāmi || so tena upādhyāyena lekhaṃ dattvā yānapātram aruhiya visarjito ||

so anupūrveṇa samudrapaṭṭanaṃ gataḥ | tena taṃ lekhaṃ tasya sārthavāhasya upanāmitaṃ || tena sārthavāhena tam upādhyāyasya lekhaṃ vācetvā ratnāni ca hiraṇyasuvarṇaṃ dattvā visarjito || so tato pi samudrapaṭṭanāto yatra kāle yānapātre vāravāliṃ prasthito so tena yānapātreṇa anupūveṇa vāravāliṃ āgato | so dāni tataḥ yānapātrāto pratināvaṃ āruhiṣyatīti | saṃmarde ca samāne sā poṭalikā samudre patitā || tasya māṇavasya bhavati | iyaṃ mayā īdṛśena yatnena samudrapaṭṭanāto ānetvā iha pratināvaṃ āruhantena samudre patitā ti | ko atra upāyo bhaveya yena etaṃ dhanaṃ labheyaṃ | nāsti anyo upāyo nānyatra etaṃ samudraṃ utsiñcāmi || so lohavaddhakaṃ tattakaṃ ādāya samudrakūlam āgataḥ | so samudrakūle vaddhakaṃ nikṣipitvā kacchāṃ bandhati samudradevatā ca brāhmaṇaveṣeṇa upasaṃkramitvā āhansuḥ || kim idaṃ || māṇava āha || utsicāmi mahodadhiṃ || brāhmaṇa āha || mahodako na śakṣyati utsaṃcituṃ || māṇavo āha ||

dīrghā brahmā ahorātrā lohavardhaṃ ca tattakaṃ |
dakṣasya apramattasya na śirī bhavati durlabhā ||

śṛṇotha vīryaṃ puruṣottamasya
balaṃ ca sthāmaṃ ca parākramaṃ ca |
yaṃ māṇavo pi purimāsu jātiṣu
etasya arthe avatīrṇo sāgaraṃ ||

tadā maṇi tasya praṇaṣṭam āsīt*
so va babhāṣe kṣapayiṣya sāgaraṃ |
karotha yatnaṃ yaṃ maṇiṃ labheyaṃ
mā anapekṣī duḥkhitā bhaviṣyatha ||

suvarṇanāgāsurayakṣarākṣasā
trastā abhū yāni samudramadhye |
yathā ca meghāni samākulāni
ninādanirghoṣaṃ viniścaranti ||

atha devatā uggami sāgarāto
saṃtrastā vyavalokayati caturdiśaṃ |
sā addasāsi māṇavam utsahantaṃ
utsiñcituṃ kṣapayituṃ ca sāgaraṃ ||

sā uttaritvā purato tam abravīt*
kiṃ māṇava mārgasi sāgarāto |
ākhyāhi asmākaṃ vayaṃ api anu-
dāsyāma māpadya vihanyamānaḥ ||

maṇī mama devate atra naṣṭo
so haṃ gaveṣāmi mahāsamudre |
āpaṃ kṣapitvāna maṇiṃ labheyaṃ
tasyārtham utsiṃci mahāsamudraṃ ||

bahūni bālāni caranti loke
arthe ca dharmeṣu ca vipramūḍhā |
tuvaṃ pi bho paramabuddhi māṇava
yaṃ durlabhaṃ loki tuvaṃ gaveṣasi ||

aśīti pūgā caturo ca vāriṇo
niryāti yasyāpi na tena jñāyati |
heṣṭā ca toyasya anantapāṇī
kathaṃ tuvaṃ utsahase kṣapetuṃ ||

upenti yatra bahavo sravantiyo
vṛṣṭi anantā prapatanti sāgaro |
āvāsabhūto ca maharddhikānāṃ
kathaṃ tu utsaryati dharmaśāstraṃ ||

yas tvaṃ akarmaṃ kuruṣe durbuddhiḥ
sakhinnagātro nacireṇa bheṣyasi |
taḍāgamātraṃ na prabhosi śoṣituṃ
naiva tuhyaṃ pratirūpaṃ māṇavā ||

yaṃ codayitvā paribhāṣi devate
tatrārthaṃ paśāmi te chinnasāgaraṃ |
śrotaṃ na khaneya na mūlam uddharet*
na tv antaraṃ yasya na pāram uttaret* ||

nāhaṃ kuśīdo svamaṇiṃ tyajeyaṃ
dhanaṃ haritvāhaṃ śameyaṃ vīryaṃ |
karontu bhūtā vacanaṃ mameha
tathā bhaṇeyaṃ na tathā bhaṇeyaṃ |
hutāśanaṃ prajvalitaṃ na saṃname
sacandratārāṃ parivartaye mahīṃ ||

[sā devatā tatra vicintayanti]
dātavyaṃ me taṃ maṇi māṇavasya
yathā na eṣo kṣapaye samudraṃ |
eṣo ca gṛhyāna maṇiṃ praṇītaṃ
gacche māṇava siddhayānapātro ||

sarvatra vīryavān sādhu kuśīdo duḥkhaṃ jīvati |
so yaṃ vīryaprabhāvena dhanam ādāya gacchati ||

pūrvenivāsaṃ bhagavān pūrvejātim anusmaran* |
jātakam idam ākhyāsi śāstā bhikṣuṇam antike ||

te skandhā tāni dhātūni tāni āyatanāni ca |
ātmānaṃ ca adhikṛtya bhagavān tam arthaṃ vyākare ||

anavarāgrasmiṃ saṃsāre yatra me uṣitaṃ purā |
māṇavako tadā āsi śiri āsī yaśodharā |
etam arthaṃ vijānetvā evaṃ dhāretha jātakaṃ ||

evam imaṃ aparimitaṃ bahuduḥkhaṃ uccanīcacaritaṃ purāṇaṃ vigatajvaro vigatabhayo aśoko svajātakaṃ bhagavāṃ bhāṣati bhikṣusaṃghamadhye || bhagavān āha || syāt khalu puna bhikṣavo yuṣmākam evam asyād anyaḥ sa tena kālena tena samayena māṇavako bhavati yasya taṃ mahāsamudre dhanaṃ patitaṃ | na khalv etad evaṃ draṣṭavyaṃ | tat kasya hetoḥ | ahaṃ so bhikṣavo tena kālena tena samayena māṇavako abhūṣi || syāt khalu punar bhikṣavo yuṣmākam evam asyād anyā sā tena kālena tena samayena vāravālīnagare brāhmaṇasya śiri nāma sā mānavakadhītā abhūṣi | na khalv etad evaṃ draṣṭavyaṃ | tat kasya hetoḥ | eṣā sā bhikṣavaḥ yaśodharā tena kālena tena samayena vāravāliye nagare brāhmaṇasya śiri nāma dhītā abhūṣi | tadāpi mayā eṣā vīryeṇa labdhā etarahiṃ pi eṣā mayā vīryeṇa labdhā ||
