The Preliminary Version of the Śyāmaka Jātaka

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo atītamadhvane nagare vārāṇasī kāśijanapade aparo brāhmaṇo || tena aṣṭacatvāriṃśadvarṣāt kaumāraṃ brahmacaryaṃ cīrṇaṃ vedā ca adhītā || tena dāni aṣṭacatvāriṃśadvarṣāt kaumāraṃ brahmacaryaṃ caritvā vedā ca adhītya nāsti anapatyasya loke pi dharmo dāraṃ kṛtaṃ apatyo ca utpādito || tasya bhavati brāhmaṇasya | paribhuktā mānuṣyakā kāmā samayo me pravrajituṃ || so dāni brāhmaṇo tāṃ brāhmaṇīm āmantrayati | bhavati āmantremi pravrajiṣyāmīti || sā naṃ āha || brāhmaṇasya vā putrasya ko viveṣyati mama vā ko viveṣyati | yadi tava abhipretaṃ pravrajituṃ ahaṃ pi pravrajiṣyāmi ahaṃ pi tapaścaraṇaṃ kariṣyāmi ahaṃ pi brahmacaryaṃ cariṣyāmi | yathāpi tvaṃ tapaścaraṇaṃ kariṣyasi tathāhaṃ pi tapaścaraṇaṃ kariṣyami || brāhmaṇo āha || evam astu tvaṃ pi pravrajāhi || te dāni vārāṇasīto nirgatā || anuhimavante sāhaṃjanī nāma āśramapado | tahiṃ gautamo nāma maharṣi prativasati paṃcataparivāro caturdhyānalābhī paṃcābhijño || so dāni brāhmaṇo tāye brāhmaṇīye tahiṃ sāhaṃjanīṃ āśramapadaṃ gatvā gautamasya ṛṣisya mūle pravrajito | sāpi brāhmaṇī pravrajitā || tena dāni tasya āśramapadasya avidūre āśramo māpito tṛṇakuṭī varṇakuṭī ca kṛtā | tasyā pāragāye tāpasīye ekānte tṛṇakuṭī kṛtā || tehi dāni tahiṃ āśramapade prativasantehi vāhirakena mārgeṇa yujyantehi ghaṭantehi vyāyamantehi dhyānāni ca abhijñā ca sākṣātkṛtā caturdhyānalābhī paṃcābhijñā mahābhāgā saṃvṛttā ugratapāśritā brahmacārī || yaṃ ṛṣi āneti mūlavikṛtiṃ vā phalavikṛtiṃ vā kodravakaṃ vā śyāmākaṃ vā priyaṃgu vā bhaṃgaṃ vā prāsādikaṃ vā śākaṃ vā mūlakaṃ vā tataḥ tasyā pi pāragāya sagarbharūpāye saṃvibhāgaṃ karoti || teṣāṃ bhavati | kiṃ imasya māṇavakasya nāmaṃ bhavatūti || teṣām etad abhūṣi | ayaṃ māṇavako śyāmavarṇako bhavati imasya māṇavakasya śyāmako ti nāma || tasya dāni māṇavakasya tehi mātāpitṛhi śyābhako ti nāma kṛtaṃ ||

tahiṃ āśramapade so māṇavako unnīyati | evam anupūrveṇa so māṇavakaḥ yaṃ kālaṃ saṃvardhito pādehi aṇvitaḥ tato yaṃ evaṃ mṛgapotakehi sārdhaṃ ramati || maitrīvihārī ṛṣayo mahābhāgā | teṣāṃ mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ na santrasanti || mṛgapakṣisahasrehi tam āśramapadaṃ upaśobhitaṃ | yaṃ velan te mṛgapotakā mātaro stanaṃ pibanti tataḥ śyāmako pi tehi evaṃ mṛgapotakehi sārdhaṃ taṃ mṛgīye stanaṃ pibati | yasyā yasyā mṛgīye allīyati sā eva stanaṃ pāyeti yathā svakapotakaṃ pāyeti tathā śyāmakaṃ pi pāyeti || evaṃ so śyāmako ṛṣikumāro tahiṃ āśramapade tehi mṛgapotakehi pakṣīhi ca sārdhaṃ saṃvardhati || yato yataḥ mṛgapotakā ca pakṣī ca aṇvanti tatra tatra śyāmako ṛṣikumāro tehi mṛgapakṣīhi parivārito aṇvati | te pi mṛgapakṣī ṛṣikumāreṇa sārdhaṃ abhiramanti || yaṃ velaṃ ṛṣikumāro uṭaje śayito bhavati tataḥ anekamṛgapotakā ca pakṣī ca nānāprakārā uṭajasya dvāramūlam anvāsanti yāvat* śyāmako ṛṣikumāro tato uṭajāto nirdhāvito bhavati | tataḥ āśramapadasya parisāmanta aṇvanti || śyāmako tehi mṛgapakṣīhi sārdhaṃ āśramapade abhiramati mṛgapakṣī pi tena śyāmakena sārdhaṃ tahiṃ āśramapade abhiramanti || śayitasyāpi ṛṣikumārasya āśramapade mṛgapotakā ca mṛgā ca pakṣī ca anuparivāritvā āsanti | yadā aṇvitukāmā bhavanti mṛgapotakā ca pakṣī ca tato taṃ śyāmakaṃ ṛṣikumāraṃ mukhatuṇḍakena pratibodhayanti || evaṃ so ṛṣikumāro tehi mṛgapakṣīhi sārdhaṃ āśramapade saṃvardhati || yaṃ velaṃ ṛṣikumāro vivṛddho saṃvṛtto tataḥ mṛgāṇām ajinena nivasto ca prāvṛto ca || yā tatra āśramapade bhavati mūlavikṛtir vā phalavikṛtir vā kodravo vā śyāmako vā cinnako vā priyaṃgur vā bhaṃgaṃ vā prāsādiko vā śākaṃ vā mūlakā vā tam ānayitvā mātāpitṝṇāṃ upanāmeti | udakam āneti kāṣṭhani āneti tṛṇakuṭiparṇakuṭīni saṃsthāpeti | tam āśramapadaṃ siṃcati saṃmārjati || paramagauraveṇa teṣāṃ mātāpitṝṇām upasthihati | prathamaṃ mātāpitaraṃ praticarati paścāt* svayaṃ āhāraṃ karoti | yata upādāya ṛṣikumāro vijñaprāpto tataḥ upādāya na kadācid adattvā mātāpitṝṇām āhāraṃ svayaṃ āhāraṃ kṛtapūrvo | evaṃ śyāmako ṛṣikumāro tahiṃ āśramapade mātāpitaram upasthihati || iṣṭena kāntena priyena manāpena kālo gacchati ṛṣikumārasya mātāpitaraṃ upasthihantasya || mātāpitaro pi tahiṃ āśramapade prativasantā jīrṇā saṃvṛttā durbalaśarīrā cakṣuparihīṇā paraprāṇeyā aśakyā ātmaṇā āhāravidhānaṃ kartuṃ udakahārāya vā gantuṃ tṛṇakuṭīya vā parṇakuṭīya vā veṣituṃ || śyāmako ṛṣikumāro teṣāṃ mātāpitṝṇāṃ vṛddhānāṃ jīrṇānāṃ durbalaśarīrāṇāṃ cakṣuhīnānāṃ sarvahitopasthānena upasthihati daśa kuśalāṃ karmapathāṃ samādāya vartati prāsādiko ṛṣikumāro abhirūpo darśanāye śubhena karmaṇā abhinirvṛttaḥ mātāpitṛvartako kaumārabrahmacārī ugratapasāśrito prāntaśayyāsanavihārī mahābhāgo priyo devānāṃ nāgānāṃ yakṣāṇāṃ rākṣasānāṃ piśācānāṃ kumbhāṇḍānāṃ kinnarāṇāṃ kinnarīṇāṃ mṛgānāṃ pakṣīṇāṃ priyo sarvabhūtānāṃ || yato yato ṛṣikumāro gacchati mūlahārī vā patrahārī vā puṣpahārī vā phalahārī vā tato tato mṛgapakṣīhi ca devanāgehi ca kinnarehi kinnarīhi ca saṃparivṛto gacchati ||

so dāni ghaṭam ādāya mṛgapakṣīhi saṃparivṛtaḥ devanāgehi ca kinnarehi ca kinnarīhi ca udakahārī girinadīṃ okasto tataḥ udakaghaṭaṃ paripūrayati || peliyakṣo nāma kāśirājā mahābalo mahākośo mahāvāhano mṛgavye aṇvanto vātajavasamena turageṇa mṛgam anujavati | ujjhitvā balavāhanā na kaścana taṃ pradeśam anuprāpto || yathoktaṃ bhagavatā dharmapade ||

gati mṛgānāṃ pavanaṃ ākāśaṃ pakṣiṇāṃ gatiḥ |
dharmo gatir vibhāgīyānāṃ nirvāṇam arhatāṃ gatir iti ||

so mṛgo tahiṃ eva vanakhaṇḍe naṣṭo || rājā tahiṃ vanakhaṇḍe śyāma-ṛṣisya tato girinadīto udakaghaṭaṃ bharantasya śabdaṃ śṛṇoti | tasyaitad abhūṣi mṛgasya etaṃ śabdaṃ ti na manuṣyacarito ayaṃ vano || tena dāni yato taṃ śabdaṃ śyāma-ṛṣisya udakaghaṭaṃ bharantasya tato kṣurapraṃ kṣiptaṃ || so dāni kṣurapro ṛṣikumārasya hṛdaye nipatito viṣakṛto || te mṛgapakṣiṇo tena viṣakṛtasya kṣuraprasya śabdena śabdavedhigandhena diśo daśa prpalānā | śyāmaka-ṛṣi udakghaṭaṃ nadītīre sthāpetvā karuṇāni paridevati || mānsasyārthaṃ mṛgavarāhā hanyanti | carmaṇārthāya siṃhavyāghrā dvīpayo hanyanti | bālārthṃ camarīyo hanyanti | dantārthaṃ hastināgā hanyanti | bhaiṣajyārthaṃ tittirakapiṃjalāni hanyanti | asmākaṃ punar naivaṃ śakyā mānsena kāryaṃ kartuṃ na carmeṇa na keśehi na dantehi kasyārthāya vayaṃ aheṭhakā adūṣakā anaparādhino ekena iṣuṇā trayo janā hatā | aho yathā saṃprajvalito adharmo || so ca śyāma-ṛṣikumāro tathā paridevati kāśirājo ca naṃ pradeśam anuprāpto paśyati tam ṛṣikumāraṃ paridevantaṃ ajinajaṭāvalkaladharaṃ mahābhāgaṃ aśru prapātentaṃ || so rājā tam ṛṣikumāraṃ kṣurapreṇa āhataṃ dṛṣṭvā bhīto asto saṃjāto | mā haiva me sanagarajanapadaṃ śāpena bhasmīkariṣyati || so tato aśvāto avataritvā śyāma-ṛṣisya kumārasya mūrdhnā nipatito || bhagavaṃ mṛgasaṃjñena mayā etaṃ iṣu kṣiptaṃ ajānamānena anukṣamāpayiṣyaṃ bhagavantaṃ ye caite aśruvindū bhūmiṃ patanti kevalakalpaṃ jmbudvīpaṃ ete aśruvindū dahensuḥ kim aṃga punaḥ asmadvidhānāṃ bālānāṃ || yena bhagavān āha ekena iṣuṇā trivargaṃ hatanti etaṃ na vijānāmi | bhagavān eko na trivargo | kathaṃ ekena iṣuṇā trayo janā hatāḥ || ṛṣikumāra āha || mahārāja mama mātāpitau jīrṇā vṛddhā durbalaśarīrā cakṣuhīnā brahmacārī mahābhāgā sadevakasya lokasya dakṣiṇīyā paraprāṇeyā ahaṃ ca teṣām upasthāyako | prathamaṃ teṣām āhāravidhānaṃ karomi paścād ātmano yaṃ kaṃcit teṣāṃ upasthānaparyantaṃ ahaṃ sarvaṃ karomi nāsti teṣāṃ anyo kocid yo sānaṃ upasthiheya tataḥ mayā hatena te pi hatā | nāsti mayā mṛtena teṣāṃ jīvitaṃ | tad etena kāraṇena jalpāmi ekeṣuṇā trayo janā hatā ti || kāśirājā śyāmaśirim ṛṣikumāraṃ āha || tīkṣṇaviṣakṛtena iṣuṇā hṛdayasmiṃ āhato so mayā ajānamānena jānāmahaṃ yathā tava jīvitaṃ nāsti | taṃ care ekaṃ satyaṃ pratiśruṇāmi | rājyaṃ ṛddhaṃ sphītam avahāya tava gurumātāpitaraṃ ahaṃ paricariṣyaṃ || yathā paricīrṇaṃ tathā paricariṣyaṃ || ṛṣikumāro āha | mahārāja tena me śokaśalyo hṛdayāto apagataḥ || etaṃ vacanaṃ pratiśrutvā yathā satyapratijño bhavesi me guruṣu tathā karohi mahīpāla mahāntaṃ te kuśalaṃ bhaviṣyati | teṣāṃ mahābhāgānāṃ upasthānaparicaryaṃ kṛtvā etaṃ mahārāja udakaghaṭam ādāya etāye ekapadikāye mama mātāpitṝṇām āśramapadaṃ gacchesi | mama vacanena abhivādanaṃ pṛcchesi | śyāmaśiri abhivādanaṃ pṛcchati evaṃ cāha | mṛto vo ekaputrako tan na śocitavyaṃ na roditavyaṃ jātena jīvaloke avaśyaṃ martavyaṃ albhanīyaṃ sthānaṃ tan na śakyaṃ roditena vā śocitena vā labdhuṃ na śakyaṃ svayaṃkṛtānāṃ karmaṇāṃ palāyituṃ | nāpi mama ekasya maraṇaṃ sarvasatvā maraṇadharmā | tan mā śociṣyatha mā utkaṇṭhiṣyatha | sarvehi priyehi manāpehi nānābhāvo vinābhāvo || yathā mahārāja satyapratijño me guruṣu bhavasi tathā karohi || evaṃ saṃviditvā ṛṣikumāro viparigataśarīro kālagato ||

rājā ṛṣikumāraṃ kālagataṃ viditvā roditvā paridevitvā aśrūṇi saṃmārjitvā tam udakaghaṭam ādāya tāye ekapadikāye yathopadiṣṭāye śyāmakaśiriṇā tam āśramapadaṃ gacchati || samanantaraprakrānto ca kāśirājā śyāmakaśirisya mūlāto śyāmakaśiri ca mṛgapakṣiśatehi mṛgapakṣisahasrehi parivārito devehi nāgehi yakṣehi kinnarehi kinnarīhi tathānyehi bhūtehi | ṛṣikumāraṃ parivāretvā mahāntaṃ ārodanaṃ karensuḥ mahāntaṃ ninādaṃ akarensuḥ | nūnaṃ so pāpakarmo tamāto tamaṃ gamiṣyati apāyeṣu apāyaṃ gamiṣyati yena tāva aheṭhakasya adūṣakasya anaparāddhasya aparāddhaṃ || sarvaṃ vanakhaṇḍaṃ tā parvatadarī taṃ ca āśramapadaṃ bhūtaninādehi nināditaṃ mṛgapakṣiravehi ca ārāvitaṃ || śyāmakaśirisya mātāpitarau tāni bhūtāni śrutvā mṛgapakṣiravāṇi śrutvā cintām āpannā | kim idaṃ adya nāsmabhiḥ kadācid edṛśāṇi bhūtānāṃ nirnādaśabdāni śrutapūrvāṇi na edṛśāni mṛgapakṣiravaśabdāni śrutapūrvāṇi mā haiva śyāmakaśiri siṃhena vyāghreṇa vā anyena vā vyāḍamṛgeṇa viheṭhito bhūd iti || yādṛśāni etāni nimittāni yādṛśo ca asmākaṃ hṛdayo anirvṛtto yathā ca me akṣīṇi parisphuranti || te ca tathā anirvṛttā kāyena ca cittena ca śyāmakaśiriṃ vicintenti | kāśirājā ca tam āśramapadam anuprāptaḥ mṛgapakṣiśatāni ca tataḥ āśramapadāto bhairavāṇi ravāṇi ravantā prapalānā | ṛṣayo asyādhikaṃ santrastā || kāśirājā ekamante vṛkṣadaṇḍe aśvaṃ bandhitvā taṃ udakaghaṭam ādāya śyāmakaśirisya mātāpitṝṇāṃ sakāśam upasaṃkrānto || abhivādayāmi bhagavan* || te pṛcchanti nandantā || ko tuvanti || rājā āha || bhagavan ahaṃ peliyakṣo nāma kāśirājā kaccid bhagavān iha tapovane sukhaṃ bhavati vyāḍamṛgānucarite nirmanuṣye utpadyanti mūlaphalāni kodravaṃ śyāmākaṃ śākamūlaṃ alpakisareṇa labhyati alpā vā vyādhi śarīre alpā daṃ­śama­saka­sarīsṛpa­saṃs­parśā kāye upanipatanti || te dāni āhansuḥ || taṃ khu mahārāja sukhaṃ vasāmaḥ iha araṇye vyāḍamṛgānucarite nirmanuṣye āśramapade mūlapatraphalāni ca kodravaśyāmakamūlakāni alpakisareṇa labhyanti alpo ca vyādhi śarīrasmiṃ alpāni ca daṃ­śama­saka­sarīsṛpa­saṃs­parśā kāye upanipatanti | kaccit* mahārāja tavāpi antaḥpure kumārāmātyeṣu bala­vāhanakośakoṣṭhāgāreṣu kṣemaṃ nirītikaṃ nirupadravaṃ paurajānapadā anuvartanti pratirājāno na kaccid aparādhyanti devo ca kālena varṣati śasyāni saṃpadyanti kṣemaṃ ca te rājyaṃ subhikṣaṃ nirupadravaṃ || so dāni āha || taṃ khu bhagavan antaḥpure kumārāmātyeṣu bala­vāhanakośakoṣṭhāgāreṣu kṣemaṃ nirītikaṃ nirupadravaṃ paurajānapadā anuvartanti pratirājāno na kaccid* aparādhyanti devo ca kālena varṣati śasyāni saṃpadyanti kṣemaṃ ca rājyaṃ subhikṣaṃ ca nirupadravaṃ ca || te dāni āhansuḥ || mahārāja etāhi śivikāhi niṣīdāhi yāvat śyāmakaśiri āgacchati udakahārī gatako tato te phalodakam upanāmeṣyati || evaṃ ca tehi ṛṣīhi ukto rājā praruṇḍo || te pṛcchanti || mahārāja kiṃ rodasi || rājā āha || bhagavaṃ yasya yūyaṃ kīrtayatha śyāmakaśiri āgamiṣyati phalodakaṃ upanāmeṣyatīti so kālagato ayaṃ ca udakaghaṭo mama haste visarjitaḥ abhivādanaṃ ca vaḥ pṛcchati evaṃ ca saṃdiśati | na śocitavyaṃ na roditavyaṃ | na śocitena vā roditena vā kocid artho | sarveṇa jātena avaśyaṃ martavyaṃ | naiva maraṇaṃ mama ekasya sarvasatvā maraṇadharmāḥ cyavanadharmā na svayaṃkṛtānāṃ karmaṇāṃ palāyituṃ śakyaṃ || te pṛcchanti || mahārāja kathaṃ śyāmaśiri kālagato || rājā āha || ahaṃ mṛgavye aṇvanto vātajavasamena turaṃgeṇa mṛgam anujavanto tam udeśam anuprāpto udakasamīpaṃ yatra śāmaśiriḥ ghaṭaṃ pūreti | tatra ca vanagahane so mṛgo naṣṭo || tasya śyāmaśirisya taṃ udakaghaṭaṃ bharantasya śabdaṃ śṛṇomi | tasya ca me tad abhūṣi | sa eva mṛgo udakena gacchatīti || tasyedaṃ gacchantasya śabdaṃ śṛṇvato mama yena taṃ śabdaṃ tena viṣakṛto kṣurapro kṣiptaḥ | so śyāmakaśirisya hṛdaye nipatito | eṣa ṛṣikumāro kālagato || te ḍāni tasya rājño śrutvā praruṇḍā aśrukaṇṭhā rudanmukhā paridevensuḥ || mahārāja mānsārthaṃ mṛgavarāhā hanyanti carmārthaṃ siṃhavyāghradvīpayo hanyanti dantārthaṃ hastināgā hanyanti bhaiṣajyārthaṃ tittiralopākā hanyanti asmākaṃ punar mahārāja na mansakāryakaṃ na carma na keśā na dantā | tat kasya hetoḥ vayam aheṭhakā adūṣakā anaparādhino ekinā iṣuṇā trayo janā hatā || kāśirājā ṛṣayo praṇipatitvā kṣamāpayati || bhagavaṃ yad ete yuṣmākaṃ aśrū bhūmiṃ nipatanti te kevalakalpaṃ jambudvīpam api dahensuḥ kiṃ punar asmadvidhānāṃ bālānāṃ || ahaṃ rājyam avahāya sasvajanaṃ sabāndhavaṃ iha yuṣmākaṃ upasthānaṃ kariṣyāmi yathā śyāmakaśirisya upasthitaṃ tathā va ca upasthihiṣyāmi || te dāni āhansuḥ || mahārāja vayaṃ andhā cakṣurhīnā na pratibalā taṃ pradeśaṃ gantuṃ vinā praṇetareṇa | tan netu mahārājā asmākaṃ taṃ pradeśaṃ yatra śyāmakaśiriḥ || vayan taṃ ṛṣikumāraṃ satyavākyena upasthāpeṣyāmaḥ satyavkyena ca taṃ mṛgaviṣaṃ haniṣyāma || tasya rājño bhavati | yādṛśā ime ṛṣayo mahābhāgā pratibalā ete tam upasthāpayituṃ || so āha || nemi vaḥ bhagavantaṃ pradeśaṃ yatra śyāmakaśirī ||

te dāni tasya rājño skandhe hastaṃ dattvā taṃ pradeśaṃ gatā || śyāmaka-ṛṣisya śīrṣaṃ utsaṃge kṛtvā pāragā śyāmakaśirisya mātā mukhamaṇḍalaṃ pāṇinā saṃparimārjantī bahuprakāraṃ rodati paridevati || śūnyo āśramapadaḥ śyāmkaśiriṇā vihīno bhaviṣyati | vanadevatā karuṇaṃ paridevitvā gamiṣyati | mṛgapakṣiṇo pi śyāmakaśiriṃ apaśyantaḥ āśramapadāto karuṇaṃ paridevantā gamiṣyanti ||

ṛṣi āha || pārage mā rodāhi mā śocāhi kiṃ ruṇḍena śocitena vā kiṃcid artho bhavati || vayam pi ugratapacīrṇavaritāvino brahmacārī samarthā vayaṃ etaṃ satyavacanena utthāpayituṃ | taṃ karoma satyavacanaṃ yenāsya mṛgaviṣaṃ haniṣyāmaḥ jīvitaṃ ca upasthapeṣyāmaḥ || tehi dāni tasya satyavacanena taṃ mṛgaviṣaṃ hataṃ || yathā tvayā putra na jātu kasyacid viṣamaṃ cintitaṃ maitracitto sarvasatveṣu tathā tava hato mṛgaviṣo bhavatu || yathā tvayā na jātu adattvā mātāpitṝṇāṃ ātmano āhāraṃ kṛtaṃ tathā tava hataṃ mṛgaviṣaṃ bhavatu || yathā tava putra mātāpitarau nityakālaṃ śīlaṃ pariśuddhaṃ rakṣataḥ tathā tava hataṃ mṛgaviṣaṃ bhavatu || so dāni ṛṣikumāro teṣāṃ mātāpitṝṇāṃ tejānubhāvena satyavacanena svakena ca sucaritatejena yathā śayitako puruṣo buddyeyā tathā vijṛmbhanto utthito ||

bhagavān āha || syāt khalu punar bhikṣavaḥ yuṣmākam evam asyād anyaḥ sa tena kālena tena samayena śyāmako ṛṣikumāro || naitad evaṃ draṣṭavyaṃ || tat kasya hetoḥ || ahaṃ so bhikṣavaḥ tena kālena tena samayena śyāmako nāma ṛṣikumāro abhuṣi || anyo so bhavati rṣi śyāmakasya pitā | eṣo śuddhodano rājā taṃ kālaṃ śyāmakasya pitā abhuṣi || anyā sā tena kālena tena samayena śyāmakasya ṛṣikumārasya pāragā nāma mātā abhūṣi | eṣā sā māyādevī abhūṣi || anyo so peliyakṣo nāma kāśirājā abhūṣi || naitad evaṃ draṣṭavyaṃ || tat kasya hetoḥ || eṣa bhikṣavaḥ ānandasthaviras tena kālena tena samayena peliyakṣo nāma kāśirājā abhūṣi || tadāpi bhikṣavaḥ eṣa śuddhodano rājā mama kāraṇena kālagato ti śrutvā na śraddadhāti | na so mahārāja kālagato śyāmakaśiri mṛgaviṣeṇa so mohito | nehi tvaṃ asmākaṃ taṃ pradeśaṃ vayaṃ taṃ mṛgaviṣaṃ satyavacanena haniṣyāmaḥ taṃ ca śyāmakaśiriṃ utthāpeṣyāmaḥ || etarahiṃ pi eṣa śuddhodano rājā mama arthāya kālagato ti śrutvā nābhiśraddadhāti ||

lokottarasya loke aparimitayaśasya lokanāthasya |
pūrvacaritaṃ bhagavato + + + guṇavato pravakṣyāmi ||

na hi bodhisatvacaritaṃ sadevagandharvamānuṣe loke |
śakyam abhibhavituṃ kenaci tena daśabalo anabhibhūto ||

yaṃ yaṃ tathāgatānāṃ smṛtiye balaṃ tāsu tāsu jātīṣu |
maitrāya ca karuṇāya ca lokaṃ anukampamānānāṃ ||

taṃ sucaritaṃ bhagavato kalpa­śata­sahas­ra­saṃ­citaśubhasya |
aham abhyudāhariṣyaṃ avadhānaṃ detha satkṛtya ||

tena samayena bhagavāṃ vānaprasthāna tāpasakulasmiṃ |
atyantaśuddhe satvaṃ upapadyitha buddhisampanno ||

tasya mātāpitarau jīrṇā ca abhūnsuś cakṣuvihīnā |
eteṣām utpadye hitāya lokottaro + + + ||

sarvamanavadyagātro ṛddhīmāṃ saumyako viśālākṣo |
tad eva tasya nāmaṃ abhūṣi śyāmo ti taṃ kālaṃ ||

āścaryaṃ ṛṣikumāraṃ yo paśyati mānuṣo vā devo vā |
rūpaguṇapāramigataṃ nidhyāyanto sa na tṛpyati ||

svayam eva bodhisatvo kiṃ kuśalaṃ gaveṣayaṃ samādiyati |
śuklaṃ kuśalaṃ dharmaṃ taṃ ca samādāya varteti ||

akhaṇḍakam akalmāṣaṃ pariśuddhaṃ duṣkṛtaṃ kuśīdehi |
svayaṃ carati brahmacaryaṃ paraṃ ca tatra niyojayati ||

mātāpitṝṣu vīro upasthapetvā tīvraṃ paricarati |
brahmacaryaṃ brahmacāri svayaṃ brahmacārivrataṃ carati ||

tasyāsi samādānaṃ priyeṣu mātāpitṝṣu dayiteṣu |
na khu me prapañcayitavyaṃ andheṣu parapraṇeyyeṣu ||

mūlaphalam āharanto gilānakā jīrṇakā vayovṛddhān* |
premnena gauraveṇa ca satkṛtya gurūn upasthāsyaṃ ||

annena ca pānena ca gilānabhaiṣajyānupradānena |
vastraiḥ śayyāsanena mātāpitaraṃ upasthāsyaṃ ||

api cātra bodhisatvo mātāpitaraṃ bhaṇāsi mā khu bhave |
na khu tāva śocitavyaṃ ahaṃ ca paricārako asmi ||

taṃ avaca śyāmasundari cīraṃbhājī ca mā ca tava pāpaṃ |
utpathapanthagatasya ca tuhya mā trāsentu bhūtāni ||

mānsarudhirārthino pi mṛgarājā atibalā ca mātaṃgā |
mārgād apakramantu te mā ca te trāsentu bhūtāni ||

mṛgapotakehi sārdhaṃ prativasati āśrameṣu ramaṇiyeṣu |
mṛga iva mṛgehi sārdhaṃ vasati araṇye ṛṣikumāro ||

tasya tahim āśramapade prativasato kṣamadamaprahāṇasya |
maitrāya ca karuṇāya ca lokaṃ anukaṃpamānasya ||

prādur ahu kāśirājā nṛpati mahāvāhano maheśākhyo |
so tasmiṃ āśramapade trāsayati mṛgā ca pakṣī ca ||

rājā vanāntareṇa adarśi eṇīmṛgāṇa yūthāni |
dṛṣṭvāna tvaritatvarito vitane dhanu sandahe kṣuraprā ||

eṣo aśvāvāhī anilajavaṃ osare mṛgābhimukhaṃ |
sakalaturaṃgaśreṣṭhaṃ prakīrṇaśirajaṃ tvaritagāmiṃ ||

saṃprati ca ṛṣikumāro kalaśaṃ ādāya prasthito udakaṃ |
avagāhi tāva girinadiṃ trastā ca mṛgā ca pakṣī ca ||

atha paramakopakupito so rājā ābhatena cāpena |
anudhāvanto mṛgān na addaśi kupito ṛṣikumāraṃ ||

tena mṛgasya khurapro saṃdahito yena āhato śyāmaḥ |
viṣaliptena aviṣamo śalyena samarpito patito ||

so avaca hanyamāno kenāsmi adūṣako pitā mātā |
ekeṣuṇā trayo hatā saṃprajvalito puna adharmo ||

dantāna nāma kāraṇā hananti nāgā mṛgā ca mānsārthaṃ |
camarī ca bālahetor dvīpayo cārthāya carmasya ||

mahyaṃ punar na dantā na pi carma na śirajā nāpi ca mānsaṃ |
kisya khu nāma kṛtena aheṭhakā hatā bhaviṣyāmaḥ ||

so tāṃ girāṃ śruṇitvā rājā adhigamya taṃ ṛṣikumāraṃ |
anuneti kṣamāpeti ca ajānatā āhato bhagavān* ||

naiṣo kṣurapro saṃdhito tvam āhato si maya ajānantena |
yam ajānantena kṣataṃ etaṃ mayā kṣamyatām eva ||

yaṃ ca paridevanto bhaṇesi ekeṣuṇā hatā trīṇi |
viyāhara brahmacārī etaṃ me artham ākhyāhi ||

taṃ avaca bodhisatvo priyeṣu mātāpitṝṣu dayiteṣu |
kāraṇam upasaṃjanetva imāṃ girām abhyudīremi ||

te me cirabrahmacārī mātā ca pitā ca jīrṇakā vṛddhā |
teṣām acakṣaṣuṣāṇām aham eva gatiś ca nāthaś ca ||

teṣām anāthamaraṇaṃ upasthitan tena rāja śocāmi |
te mahyam aparicīrṇā anāthamaraṇaṃ mariṣyanti ||

etena hetunā ahaṃ bhaṇāmi hatā trīṇi |
kiṃci tvayi poṣiyanto na hato + + + bhaviṣyāmi ||

kāśipatiḥ tīkṣṇabuddhi tenāpi asya saṃbhāvito artho |
taṃ avaca ṛṣikumāraṃ praṇamya śirasā hi pādeṣu ||

nirayaṃ ahaṃ patiṣyaṃ adūṣakaṃ ṛṣiputraṃ hanitvāna |
etādṛśā hi hatvā narakeṣu na mucyituṃ śakyā ||

ye pi tava aśruvindū patanti atyantaśuddhasatvasya |
lokam api te dahensuḥ kiṃ puna asmādṛśāṃ bālā ||

satyaṃ bhaṇāmi yadi me maraṇena jīvitaṃ tava bhaveya |
prāṇam api ahaṃ tyajeyaṃ na vaiṣa saṃvidyate sthānaṃ ||

tīkṣṇena viṣakṛtena hṛdayasmiṃ āhato si ṛṣiputra |
jānāmi jīvitaṃ tava nāsti na ca me priyaṃ bhavati ||

evaṃ ca te mahāyaśa pratiśruṇiṣyāmi taṃ me pattīya |

satyaṃ hi jīvaloke pratiṣṭhitaṃ eṣa paramārthaṃ ||

rājyam apahāya sphītaṃ strīyo ca kāmāṃś ca parityajya |
mūlaphalam āharanto gurū tavāhaṃ paricariṣyaṃ ||

taṃ avaca bodhisatvo kharaṃ mama śokaśalyaparidāghaṃ |
vyapanayasi rājakuṃjara imāṃ girām abhyudīrento ||

idam eva udakakumbhaṃ ādāya imāhi ekapadikāhi |
asmākam āśramapadaṃ gatvā vacanena me bhaṇesi ||

abhivādanaṃ punaḥ puna bhaṇesi tvaṃ mātaraṃ ca pitaraṃ ca |
kālagato vo putro so ca vo abhivādanaṃ āha ||

na kathaṃcit* śocitavyaṃ nāpi ca ruṇḍena śocitenārtho |
jātena jīvaloke sarveṇa avaśyaṃ martavyaṃ ||

eṣā kilānupūrvā na suciraṃ jīvitaṃ manuṣyāṇāṃ |
maraṇaṃ paryavasānaṃ āḍhyānāṃ durgatānāṃ ca ||

nāpi ca svayaṃkṛtānāṃ karmāṇāṃ phalaṃ palāyituṃ śakyā |
cakraparivartakasya hi uparipatati sukhaṃ ca duḥkhaṃ ca ||

nāpi ca manonvitānāṃ mayā śrutaṃ nāpi cāhaṃ jānāmi |
kṣaṇikasya durbalasya ca saṃskāragatasya adhruvatāṃ ||

nāpi + + + maraṇaṃ nāpi ca mama eva edṛśaṃ duḥkhaṃ |
anubhūto eṣa artho na kiṃci loke anāgamyaṃ ||

eṣo me śokaśalyo yaṃ jīrṇā cakṣuṣā ca parihīnā |
hohanti śokabahulā tava śruṇitvāna vṛttāntaṃ ||

syāme tha paśya dāniṃ kāśivardhana satyapratijño bhavesi |
taṃ me gurūsu pāricaryāye janādhipa bhaviṣyati ||

taṃ mahārthaṃ jīrṇeṣu durbaleṣu ca paṇḍitā praśaṃsanti |
paricaryaṃ hi janādhipa trīṇi pi tasyāsti aṃgāni ||

puṇyaṃ ca nāma hohati yaśo ca kīrtī ca kaśalamūlaṃ ca |
pṛcchāhi kāśirāja vacanam abhigamanaṃ samupasthāhi ||

sādhūti śrutvāna sa vimano aśrūṇi saṃpramārjanto |
prakramati kāśirājā mṛto sti śyāmo ti viditvāna ||

samprati ca kāśirājā prakrānto mṛgaśatāni ca bahūni |
parivārensuḥ śyāmaṃ pakṣigaṇā devatā api ca ||

taṃ paśyiyāna patitaṃ śayamānaṃ mūrcchitaṃ nadītīre |
rodensuḥ devatā pi mṛgapakṣiśatāni ca bahūni ||

so nūnaṃ pāpakarmā tamā tamaṃ durgatīṣu durgatiyaṃ |
gacchati yo tava pāpaṃ cintayati apāpadharmasya ||

bhūtānāṃ ca ninādo ākāśe pṛthivīye ca nirghoṣo |
vātā ca vipravānti cintayati ṛṣi aho kaṣṭaṃ ||

mā haiva ṛṣikumāro viheṭhito yādṛśāni dṛśyanti |
raudrāṇi kāruṇāni ca rutarutaśabdāni subahūni ||

vātā pravānti kaṣṭaṃ śakunā pravyāharanti ca kharāṇi |
hṛdayaṃ ca vyutthasthāno sarvo ca anirvṛto kāyo ||

ete manovitarkā vartanti so ca peliyaśo nāma |
prakramati āśramapadaṃ mṛgapakṣigaṇā ca santrastā ||

bhītā diśo vrajanti bhayārditā devatā pi saṃjñātvā |
durmanatarā abhūnsuḥ niṣpratyāśā paśyantīyo ||

na imāṃ diśāṃ manuṣyo amanuṣyo vāpi kvacid āgamya |
na pi dṛṣṭvā ṛṣikumāraṃ mṛgapakṣigaṇā bhayaṃ enti ||

niḥsaṃśayaṃ bhaviṣyati mahadbhayo romaharṣaṇo satvo |
yaṃ paśyiyā mṛgagaṇā santrasyanti pakṣisaṃghā ca ||

viditaviditaṃ upagamya mātāpitaraṃ anāgamanena sya |
prāṇaharo pi trasyantaṃ madhurāhi girāhi abhinandi ||

te avaca svāgataṃ tava kuto tuvaṃ kasya vāsi tvaṃ dūto |
andhā sma acakṣuṣkā śyāmo ca gato udakahārī ||

rājāha ahaṃ mṛgavyaṃ kāśipurā nirgato saha balena |
nāmena peliyakṣo aṇvāmi mṛgā gaveṣanto ||

kacci tava rājakuṃjara varṣati devo rohati ca vījaṃ |
antaḥpuraṃ arogaṃ mahya kumārā balāgraṃ ca ||

nagareṣu janapadeṣu ca kṣemaṃ me prakṛtayo ca anuraktā |
na ca vardhanti amitrā sarvo ca vivardhati kośo ||

śramaṇeṣu brāhmaṇeṣu ca ārakṣo dhārmiko janapadeṣu |

vardhati na caiva hāyati dānāni ca demi satkṛtya ||

yuṣmākaṃ pi araṇye taskaravyāghra­bahuv­yālacaritasmiṃ |
na karonti kecid* hiṃsāṃ bhūtāni yathotpathagatāni ||

puṣpakalaṃ prabhūtaṃ śyāmākaṃ śākamūlakaṃ pracuraṃ |
alpakisareṇa labhyati alpā vyādhī śarīrasmiṃ ||

nacireṇa gato kumāro niṣīda etāhi parṇaśivikāhi |
bhavyasya dhārmikasya atiriva ca manomanāpasya ||

atha viṣakṛtām aniṣṭāṃ prāṇaharāṃ tasya tāpasakulasya |
vācāṃ pravyāharati rājā aśrūṇi vartento ||

yaṃ bhaṇatha brahmacārī ṛṣiputraḥ dharmacāri samacāri |
so saṃprati kālagato so vo abhivādanaṃ āha ||

na kathaṃci śocitavyaṃ na pi ruṇḍaśocitena kocārtho |
jātena jīvaloke sarveṇa avaśyaṃ martavyaṃ ||

te tāṃ girāṃ aniṣṭāṃ amanojñāṃ apriyāṃ śruṇitvāna |
avaciṃsu jīvitaṃ khu me uparundhasi evaṃ jalpanto ||

so avaca eṣo artho nayena jāto yadā mayā pāpaṃ |
avijānantena kṛtaṃ evaṃ kṣamyantu me devā ||

aham api ca etam arthaṃ ihāgato yāṃ dhurām ṛṣikumāro |

vaheti ca tāṃ vahiṣyaṃ ahaṃ ca devā upasthāsyaṃ ||

paridevate sya mātā indīvarasuprasūtavarṇasya |
hasitabhaṇitāni pūrvaṃ priyasya putrasya vigaṇentī ||

hā dayita syāma sundara tvayā vinābhāvasambhavo pūrvaṃ |
mahyaṃ hṛdayaṃ dahiṣyati śuṣkaṃ tṛṇakāṣṭham iva agni ||

śūnyam imam āśramapadaṃ khyāyati bhayabhairavaṃ anabhiramyaṃ |
bhavyena dhārmikena vihīnaṃ ṛṣiṇā udāreṇa ||

yaṃ nūnaṃ so sarvā no śakti kāmam ahu tena ca śamaṃ |
taṃ mama asya varataraṃ na jātu etādṛśaṃ duḥkhaṃ ||

asmehi nyūnā manye kṛtā vicitrā vividhā tapaścaryā |
tasyaiṣa phalavipāko yaṃ sma vihīnā priyaputreṇa ||

ruṇḍena śocitena mahattaraṃ pīḍitā parikilantā |
bahvyasya dhārmikasya anusmarantī guṇaśatāni ||

te avaca kāśirājaṃ evaṃ so yācito tahiṃ nehi |
andhā sma acakṣukā sma na sma samarthā tahiṃ gantuṃ ||

so avaca tahiṃ khu neṣyaṃ taṃ deśaṃ yatra so ṛṣikumāro |
apy eva nāma jīve yuvā sa nihato mṛgaviṣehi ||

sa kāśirājā + + + mārgeṇa yathāgatena gacchanto |

nacirasya taṃ pradeśaṃ agami yahiṃ so ṛṣikumāro ||

taṃ paśyiyāna patitaṃ śayamānaṃ mūrchitaṃ nadītīre |
mukharatanam asya mātā kareṇa parimārjati rudantī ||

hā dayita ekaputra akiṃcanānāṃ tuvaṃ daridrāṇāṃ |
bandhu abandhūnāṃ tvaṃ kathaṃ asi viheṭhito vatsa ||

vanadevatā pi satye na kiṃcid artho yamamanuṣyabhūteṣu |
paśyanti kiṃcit* śyāmo stokaṃ pi na vārito vatso ||

duḥsoḍhaṃ yātrānnaṃ vidyate + + + bahudalaśatāni |
bhavyena dhārmikena yahiṃ vihīnā priyaputreṇa ||

te nūnaṃ karuṇakaruṇaṃ mṛgā ca pakṣī ca āśramapadasmiṃ |
śyāmakaśirim apaśyantā garjanti ratiṃ alabhamānā ||

mā śoca pārage tvaṃ na pi ruṇḍaśocitena kocārtho |
jātena jīvaloke sarveṇa avaśyaṃ martavyaṃ ||

vayabhapi ca brahmacārī ciraviratā maithunehi yogehi |
kāhāma satyavākyaṃ tenāsya viṣaṃ haniṣyāmaḥ ||

yatha tuhya syāma sundara pāpe cittaṃ na sajjati kadācit* |
tatha tava hataṃ mṛgaviṣaṃ utthehi ca satyavacanena ||

yatha tava mātāpitarau śīlaṃ rakṣanti nityapariśuddhaṃ |
tatha tava hataṃ mṛgaviṣaṃ utthehi ca satyavacanena ||

yathā tava bhavanettī māno ca mado ca nāsti mrakṣo vā |
tatha tava hataṃ mṛgaviṣaṃ utthehi ca satyavacanena ||

atha so vijṛmbhamāṇo samutthito apagate mṛgaviṣasmiṃ |
mātāpitṛtejena ca sucaritatejena ca svakena ||

taṃ paśyiyāna rājā samutthitaṃ tena satyavacanena |
saṃhṛṣṭaromakūpo nipati caraṇeṣu kṣamāpayasi ||

taṃ avaca bodhisatvo sayugyabalavāhano sadevīko |
sanagaranigamajanapado sukhī bhavāhi mahārāja ||

paśyāhi kāśivardhana mātāpitugāravasya niṣyandaṃ |
yathā samūhataṃ mṛgaviṣaṃ sucaritatejena suvakena ||

yeṣāṃ mātāpitarau suśrūṣā aṃjaliṃ praṇāmaḥ ca |
kartavyaṃ kāśivardhana yadi icchanti s­vagaṃ gantuṃ ||

asmiṃ jambudvīpe ratnāni āharitvā sarvāṇi |
pūjaya mātāpitaraṃ mātāpitṝṣu na pratikuryāt* ||

evaṃ na supratikaraṃ bhaṇāmi mātāpituṃ mahārāja |
anukampāhi ete pūrvācāryā va lokasya ||

devānām iva teṣāṃ sannamitavyaṃ manuṣyadevānāṃ |
yeṣāṃ mātāpirau labhanti pūjāṃ na te śocyā ||

yā sā abhūṣi mātā taṃ kālaṃ sā abhūt tadā māyā |
śuddhodano sa rājā pitā bhagavato tadā āsi ||

yo so mahānubhāvo samutthito tena satyavākyena |

so āsi bodhisatvo bhagavāṃ śyāmo hi taṃ kālaṃ ||

yo so abhūṣi rājā taṃ kālaṃ so abhūṣi ānando |
bhagavato jñāti preṣyo bahūni jātīsahasrāṇi ||

nāyaṃ kva pi saṃbuddho nāpi ca sva­yaṃ­pratibhañjitagrantho |
bhūtaṃ hi tad* bhagavato pūrvacaridharmaniṣpattiḥ ||
