72. The Story of Mahākāśyapa’s Going Forth

evaṃ mayā śrutam ekasmiṃ samaye bhagavato śiṣyo āyuṣmān ānando magadheṣu cārikāṃ caramāṇo mahatā bhikṣusaṃghena sārdhaṃ paṃcahi bhikṣuśatehi yena magadhānāṃ rājagṛhaṃ nagaraṃ tad avasāri tad anuprāptaḥ tatraiva viharati veṇuvane kalandakanivāpe || tena khalu punaḥ samayena āyuṣmato ānandasya triṃśa sārdhaṃvihārikā śikṣāṃ pratyākhyāya daurbalyam āviṣkṛtvā hīnāyāvartanti kāmehi || aśroṣī āyuṣmāṃ mahākāśyapo āyuṣmato ānandasya triṃśa sārdhavihārikā śikṣāṃ pratyākhyāya daurbalyam āviṣkṛtvā hīnāyāvartapravṛttā kāmehi || atha khalv āyuṣmān mahākāśyapo yenāyuṣmān ānandas tenopasaṃkramitvā āyuṣmatā ānandena sārdhaṃ saṃmodanīyāṃ kathāṃ saṃmodayitvā sārāyaṇīyāṃ kathāṃ vītisārayitvā ekānte niṣīdi | ekāntaniṣaṇṇo āyuṣmāṃ mahākāśyapo ānandam etad avocat* || pṛcchema vayam āyuṣmantam ānandaṃ kiṃcid eva pradeśaṃ sacet mo āyuṣmān ānando vakāśaṃ karoti praśnavyākaraṇāye || evam ukta āyuṣmān ānando āyuṣmantaṃ mahākāśyapaṃ etad avocat* || pṛcchāyuṣmaṃ kāśyapa yadākāṃkṣasi śrutvā pravedayiṣyāmi ||

evam ukte āyuṣmān mahākāśyapaḥ āyuṣmantam ānandam etad avocat* || saced manyasi āyuṣman ānanda kati arthavaśāṃ saṃpaśyamānena tathāgatenārhatā samyaksaṃbuddhena śrāvakāṇāṃ gaṇabhojanaṃ pratikṣiptaṃ trikabhojanaṃ ca anujñātaṃ || evam ukte āyuṣmān ānando āyuṣmantaṃ mahākāśyapam etad avocat* || dūrato khalu vayaṃ āyuṣman mahākāśyapa āgacchema āyuṣmanto yena mahākāśyapa etam arthaṃ paripṛcchanāya || sādhu punar āyuṣmato eva mahākāśyapasya eṣo artho pratibhāyatu || evam ukte āyuṣmān mahākāśyapo āyuṣmantam ānandam etad avocat* || dve āyuṣman ānanda arthavaśāṃ saṃpaśyamānena tathāgatenārhatā samyaksaṃbuddhena śrāvakāṇāṃ gaṇabhojanaṃ ca pratikṣiptaṃ trikabhojanaṃ ca anujñātaṃ || katame dve | yāvad eva kulānāṃ ca rakṣāye guptīye phāsuvihārāye pāpānāṃ ca pakṣaparicchedāye mā pāpā āmiṣeṇa gaṇaṃ bandhitvā saṃghe kalahabhaṇḍanavigrahavivādaṃ adhikaraṇaṃ kaukṛtyaṃ utpādensuḥ || ime khalv āyuṣman ānanda dve arthavaśāṃ saṃpaśyamānena tathāgatenārhatā samyaksaṃbuddhena śrāvakāṇāṃ gaṇabhojanaṃ ca pratikṣiptaṃ trikabhojanaṃ ca anujñātaṃ || so tvaṃ āyuṣman ānanda imāye parṣāye navāye daharāye taruṇāye indriyeṣv aguptadvārāye bhojane amātrajñātāye pūrvarātrāpararātraṃ jāgarikāyogam ananuyuktāye agauravāye sabrahmacāriṣu sthavireṣu navakeṣu madhyameṣu kuleṣu cārikāṃ carasi śasyaghātaṃ viya manye karonto nāyaṃ kumārako mātram ājñāsi || evam ukte āyuṣmān ānando āyuṣmantaṃ mahākāśyapam etad avocat* || api hi me āyuṣman mahākāśyapa śirasi pi palitāni jātāni atha ca me punaḥ āyuṣmān mahākāśyapo kumāravādena samudācaritavyaṃ manyati || dvitīyakaṃ tṛtīyakaṃ pi āyuṣmāṃ mahākāśyapo āyuṣmantaṃ ānandam etad avocat* || tathā tvam āyuṣman ānanda imāye pariṣāye indriyeṣv aguptadvārāye bhojane amātrajñātāye pūrvarātrāpararātraṃ jāgarikāyogam ananuyuktāye agauravāye sabrahmacārīhi sthavirehi navakehi madhyamehi kulehi cārikāṃ carasi śasyaghātaṃ viya manye karonto na cāhaṃ kumārako mātram ājñāsīt* || dvitīyakaṃ tṛtīyakaṃ pi āyuṣmān ānando āyuṣmantaṃ mahākāśyapam etad avocat* || api hi me āyuṣman mahākāśyapa śirasi palitāni jātāni atha ca punar me mahākāśyapo yāvat tṛtīyakaṃ pi kumārakavādena samudācaritavyaṃ manyati ||

tena khalu punaḥ samayena sthūlanandā bhikṣuṇī āyuṣmataḥ ānandasya anatidūre sthitā abhūṣi || atha khalu sthūlanandā bhikṣūṇī āyuṣmantaṃ mahākāśyapam etad avocat* || kiṃ punar āryamahākāśyapo anyatīrthikapūrvo samāno āryam ānandaṃ vaidehamuniṃ bhagavato upasthāyakaṃ bhagavataḥ santikāvacaraṃ bhagavato saṃmukhaṃ dharmāṇāṃ pratigrahetāraṃ yāvatṛtīyakaṃ pi kumāravādena samudācaritavyaṃ manyati || evam ukte āyuṣmān mahākāśyapo āyuṣmantaṃ ānandam etad avocat* || sā hi nūnāyaṃ āyuṣman ānanda bhaginī asmaramāṇarūpā bhāṣati | kiṃ punaḥ āryo mahākāśyapo anyatīrthikapūrvo samāno āryānandaṃ vaidehakamuniṃ bhagavato upasthāyakaṃ bhagavato santikāvacaraṃ bhagavato saṃmukhaṃ dharmāṇāṃ pratigrahetāraṃ yāvatṛtīyakaṃ pi kumārakavādena samudācaritavyaṃ manyati || evam ukte āyuṣmān ānando āyuṣmantaṃ mahākāśyapam etad avocat* || kṣama āyuṣmanta mahākāśyapa bālo mātṛgrāmo avyakto akuśalo akṣetrajño || evaṃ yāvat tṛtīyaṃ pi āyuṣmān mahākāśyapo āyuṣmantam ānandam etad uvāca || sā hi nūnāyam āyuṣman ānanda bhaginī asmaramāṇarūpā evam āha | kiṃ punar āryo mahākāśyapo āryānandaṃ vaidehamuniṃ bhagavato upasthāyakaṃ bhagavato santikāvacaraṃ bhagavato saṃmukhaṃ dharmāṇāṃ pratigrahetāraṃ saṃmukhā yeva yāvatṛtīyaṃ pi kumārakavādena samudācaritavyaṃ manyati || tṛtīyakaṃ pi āyuṣmān ānando āyuṣmantaṃ mahākāśyapam etad uvāca || kṣama āyuṣman mahākāśyapa bālo mātṛgrāmo avyakto akuśalo akṣetrajño ||

evam ukte āyuṣmān mahākāśyapo āyuṣmantam ānandam etad avocat* || na khalu puanr aham āyuṣman ānanda abhijānāmi pūrvaṃ pravrajyāyāṃ pravrajito iti vahirdhā anyaṃ śāstāraṃ vyavadiśitum anyatraiva tena bhagavatā tathāgatenārhatā samyaksaṃbuddhena | mahyaṃ khalv āyuṣman ānanda pūrvaṃ pravrajyāyām apravrajitasya etad abhūṣi | saṃbādho punar ayaṃ gṛhāvāso rajasāmāvāso abhyavakāśaṃ pravrajyā | taṃ na labhyaṃ agāram adhyāvasantena ekāntasaṃlikhitam ekāntam anavadyaṃ pariśuddhaṃ ekāntaparyavadātaṃ brahmacaryaṃ carituṃ | yan nūnāhaṃ agārasyānagāriyaṃ pravrajeyaṃ || sa khalv aham āyuṣmaṃ ānanda alūkhaṃ gṛhāvāsaṃ prahāya aśītiṃ hiraṇyasuvarṇasya śakaṭavāhānavahāya paṃca ca dāsaśatāni paṃca ca dāsīśatāni paṃca ca paśuśatāni paṃca ca grāmakṣetraśatāni ekūnaṃ ca halasahasraṃ bhadrāṃ kāpileyāṃ suvarṇasīrakāṃ avahāya ekaṃ karpāsikaṃ paṭapilotikam ādāya ye loke arahaṃto teṣām uddiśya anupravrajehaṃ || tena khalu āyuṣman ānanda samayena na kocid anyo loke arhanto abhūṣi anyatraiva tena bhagavatā samyaksaṃbuddhena || sa cāham āyuṣman ānanda tathā pravrajito samāno saṃvatsaraparamāye rātrīye adrākṣīd bhagavantam antarāya rājagṛhasya bahuputrake cetiye | dṛṣṭvā ca punar me advayasaṃjñā udapāsi samyaksaṃbuddhaṃ paśyeyaṃ bhagavantam eva paśyeyaṃ sarvajñaṃ ca paśyeyaṃ bhagavantam eva paśyeyaṃ sarvadarśiṃ ca paśyeyaṃ bhagavantam eva paśyeyaṃ apariśeṣajñānadarśanaṃ ca paśyeyaṃ bhagavantam eva paśyeyaṃ ||


sa khalv aham āyuṣman ānanda yena bhagavāṃs tenopasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte asthāsi ekānte sthito ham āyuṣman ānanda bhagavantam etad avocat* || śāstā me bhagavāṃ śrāvako ’ham asmi sugate || evam ukte āyuṣman ānanda bhagavāṃ mama etad uvāca || evam eva kāśyapa ahaṃ kāśyapa śāstā tvaṃ ca me śrāvako | yo hi kocit kāśyapa evaṃ sarvacetosamanvāgataṃ śrāvakaṃ labhitvāsamyaksaṃbuddho eva samāno samyaksaṃbuddho ti pratijāneya asarvajño yeva samāno sarvajño ti pratijāneya asarvadarśāvī yeva samāno sarvadarśāvīti pariśeṣajñānadarśano yeva samāno apariśeṣajñānadarśano ti pratijāneya saptadhā vāsya mūrdhā bhaveyā || ahaṃ khalu punaḥ kāśyapa samyaksaṃbuddho iti yeva samāno samyaksaṃbuddho ti pratijānāmi sarvajño yeva samāno sarvajño ti pratijānāmi sarvadarśāvī yeva samāno sarvadarśāvīti pratijānāmi apariśeṣajñānadarśano yeva samāno apariśeṣajñānadarśano ti pratijānāmi || abhijñāya ahaṃ kāśyapa śrāvakāṇāṃ dharmaṃ deśayāmi na anabhijñāya | sanidānaṃ ahaṃ kāśyapa śrāvakāṇāṃ dharmaṃ deśayāmi na anidānaṃ | saprātihāryaṃ ahaṃ kāśyapa śrāvakāṇāṃ dharmaṃ deśayāmi na aprātihāryaṃ || tasya me kāśyapa abhijñāya śrāvakāṇāṃ dharmaṃ deśayato na anabhijñāya sanidānaṃ śrāvakāṇāṃ dharmaṃ deśayato na anidānaṃ saprātihāryaṃ śrāvakāṇāṃ dharmaṃ deśayato nāprātihāryaṃ karaṇīyo ovādo karaṇīyā anuśāsanīti vademi || tasmād iha te kāśyapa śikṣitavyaṃ || kiṃ tv ahaṃ prātimokṣasaṃvarasaṃvṛtto vihariṣyaṃ ācāragocarasampanno aṇumātreṣv āvadyeṣu bhayadarśāvī samādāya śikṣiṣyaṃ ti śikṣāpadeṣu kāya­karma­vācā­karma­mano­karmeṇa samanvāgataḥ pariśuddhena pariśuddhājīvo || evaṃ te kāśyapa śikṣitavyaṃ ||

tasmād iha te kāśyapa evaṃ śikṣitavyaṃ || kiṃ tv ahaṃ ṣaṭsu indriyeṣu guptadvāro vihariṣyāmīti ārakṣāsmṛti nidhyāpanasmṛtiḥ samavasthāvihārī ādīnavadarśāvī niḥśaraṇaḥ prājño araktena cetasā samanvāgataḥ | so cakṣuṣā rūpaṃ dṛṣṭvā na ca nimittagrāhī bhaviṣyan na cānuvyaṃjanagrāhī | yato adhikaraṇaṃ ca me cakṣvindriyeṇa asaṃvṛtasya viharantasya abhidhyā daurmanasyam aneke pāpakāḥ akuśalā dharmāḥ cittaṃ anuprāvensuḥ teṣāṃ saṃvarāya pratipadiṣyāmi rakṣiṣyāmi cakṣvindriyeṇa saṃvaram āpadiṣyāmi iti || evan te kāśyapa śikṣitavyaṃ || śrotreṇa śabdāṃ śrutvā ghrāṇena gandhāṃ ghrāyitvā jihvayā rasā svādayitvā kāyena praṣṭavyāṃ spṛśitvā manasā dharmāṃ vijñāya na ca nimittagrāhī vihariṣyāmi na cānuvyaṃjanagrāhī vihariṣyāmi | yato adhikaraṇaṃ ca me bhavendriyeṇa asaṃvṛtasya viharato abhidhyā daurmanasya aneke pāpakāḥ akuśalā dharmā cittam anuprāvensuḥ teṣāṃ saṃvarāya pratipadiṣyāmīti rakṣiṣyāmi manindriyaṃ manindriyeṇa saṃvaram āpadyiṣyāmīti || evan te kāśyapa śikṣitavyaṃ || tasmād iha kāśyapa evaṃ śikṣitavyaṃ || kin ti me kāyagatā smṛtiḥ sukhasahagatā satatasamitaṃ kāyaṃ na jahiṣyāmīti || evaṃ te kāśyapa śikṣitavyaṃ || tasmād iha te kāśyapa evaṃ śikṣitavyaṃ || kin ti ahaṃ ye kecit kuśalā dharmā paryāpuṇiṣyanti sarvantaṃ ātmadamathaśamatha­pari­nirvāṇārthaṃ ti | evaṃ te kāśyapa śikṣitavyaṃ ||

tasmād iha te kāśyapa evaṃ śikṣitavyaṃ | kin ti me catuhi pariṣāhi bhaviṣyati adhimātraṃ premnaṃ ca gauravaṃ ca hrī cāpatrapyaṃ ca bhāvanā ca pratyupasthitā ti || evan te kāśyapa śikṣitavyaṃ || tasmād iha te kāśyapa śikṣitavyaṃ || kin tv ahaṃ paṃcasu upādānaskandheṣu samudayāstaṃgamān paśyī vihariṣyaṃ | iti rūpaṃ iti rūpasamudayo iti rūpasyāstaṃgamo iti vedanā iti vedanāsamudayo iti vedanāstaṃgamo iti saṃjñā iti saṃjñāsamudayo iti saṃjñāstaṃgamo iti saṃskārā iti saṃskārasamudayo iti saṃskārāṇām astaṃgamo iti vijñānaṃ iti vijñānasamudayo iti vijñānāstaṃgamo iti || evan te kāśyapa śikṣitavyaṃ || sa khalv aham āyuṣmann ānanda bhagavatā iminā ovādena ovādito aṣṭāham evābhūṣi śaikṣo sakaraṇīyo navame yevājñām ārāgaye ||

tasya me āyuṣman ānanda bhagavāṃ iminā ovādena ovāditvā utthāyāsanāto prakrāmi || sa khalv aham āyuṣman ānanda bhagavantaṃ gacchantaṃ pṛṣṭhimena pṛṣṭhimaṃ samanubaddho haṃ || tasya me āyuṣmann ānanda bhagavantaṃ pṛṣṭhimena pṛṣṭhimaṃ samanubaddhasya etad abhūṣi | aho bhagavāṃ punar mārgād apakramyānyataraṃ vṛkṣamūlaṃ niśrāya tiṣṭhe | prajñāpayeyaṃ ahaṃ bhagavato karpāsikapaṭapilotika­saṃ­ghāṭīṃ || tasya me āyuṣmann ānanda bhagavān idam evarūpaṃ cetaso parivitarkam ājñāya mārgād apakramyānyataraṃ vṛkṣamūlaṃ niśrāya adhiṣṭhāsi || prajñāpayed aham āyuṣman ānanda bhagavato karpāsānāṃ paṭapilotikasaṃghāṭīṃ niṣīde bhagavāṃ prajñapta evāsane || niṣadya khalv āyuṣman ānanda bhagavāṃ etad uvāca || sakhilā khudayaṃ kāśyapa karpāsānaṃ paṭapilotikasaṃghāṭī mṛdukādayaṃ kāsyapa karpāsānāṃ paṭapilotikasaṃghāṭī masinādayaṃ kāśyapa karpāsānāṃ paṭapilokasaṃghāṭī sukham ādayaṃ kāśyapa karpāsānāṃ paṭapilotikasaṃghāṭī tanukādayaṃ kāśyapa karpāsānāṃ paṭapilotikasaṃghāṭī lahukādayaṃ kāśyapa karpāsānāṃ paṭapilotikasaṃghāṭī sukṛtikādayaṃ kāśyapa karpāsānāṃ paṭapilotikasaṃghāṭī ślakṣṇādayaṃ kāśyapa karpāsānāṃ paṭapilotikasaṃghāṭī śobhanādayaṃ kāśyapa karpāsānāṃ paṭapilotikasaṃghāṭī sparśavantādayaṃ kāśyapa karpāsānāṃ paṭapilotikasaṃghāṭī || sa khalv aham āyuṣman ānanda bhagavantam etad uvāca || lābhā me bhagavan sulabdhā bhavet* yan me bhagavān karpāsānāṃ paṭapilotikasaṃghāṭī pratigṛhṇeya || evam ukte āyuṣman ānanda bhagavān mama etad uvāca || icchasi punaḥ tvaṃ kāśyapa tathāgatasya santike śāṇānāṃ pāṃśukūlānāṃ saṃghāṭīṃ dhārayituṃ || evam ukte haṃ āyuṣman ānanda bhagavantam etad uvāca || labhā me bhagavan sulabdhā bhavet* yan me bhagavāṃ śāṇānāṃ pāṃśukūlānāṃ saṃghāṭīṃ dadeya || adāsi khalu me āyuṣmann ānanda bhagavāṃ śāṇānāṃ pāṃśukūlānāṃ saṃghāṭīṃ pratigṛhṇe aham āyuṣmann ānanda bhagavato śāṇānāṃ pāṃśukūlānāṃ saṃghāṭīṃ || sace khalv āyuṣmann ānanda samyagvadamānā vadensuḥ bhagavato śrāvako śāstu saṃmukhaṃ śāṇaṃ pāṃśukūlaṃ pratigrahe evam eva te samyagvadamānā vadensuḥ | tat kasya hetoḥ | aham āyuṣmann ānanda śāstu saṃmukhaṃ śāṇapāṃśukūlānāṃ pratigrahetāro śrāvako || yat tad ānanda samyagvadamānā vadensuḥ bhagavato putro oraso mukhato jāto dharmajo dharmanirmito dharmadāyādo na āmiṣadāyādo evam eva te samyagvadamānā vadensuḥ | tat kasya hetoḥ | aham āyuṣman ānanda bhagavato putro oraso mukhato jāto dharmajo dharmanirmito dharmadāyādo na āmiṣadāyādo || kuṃjaraṃ pi so āyuṣman ānanda ṣaṣṭihāyanaṃ balaśaktikāye chāditavyaṃ manyeya yo me tisro vidyāṃ ṣaḍvābhijñā balavaśībhāvaṃ chādayitavyaṃ manyeyā | nadīyo pi so āyuṣman gaṃgāye srotaṃ rajamuṣṭinā āvaritavyaṃ manye yo me tisro vidyāṃ ṣaḍvābhijñāṃ balavaśībhāvaṃ chādayitavyaṃ manye | vātaṃ pi so āyuṣmann ānanda jālena bandhitavyaṃ manye yo me tisro vidyāṃ ṣaḍvābhijñāṃ balavaśībhāvaṃ chādayitavyaṃ manye | ākāśaṃ pi so āyuṣman ānanda paṃcāṃgulaṃ kartavyaṃ manye yo me tisro vidyā ṣaḍvābhijñā balavaśībhāvaṃ chādayitavyaṃ manye || yasya punaḥ khalu āyuṣmann ānanda imeṣāṃ paṃcānāṃ bhikṣuśatānāṃ syāt mayi kāṃkṣā vicikitsā vā so praśnaṃ pṛcchatu ahaṃ praśnasya vyākaraṇena evam etaṃ samyaksiṃhanādaṃ nadāmi || evam ukte te bhikṣū āyuṣmantaṃ mahākāśyapam etad uvāca || yasya khalu punar āyuṣman mahākāśyapa syāt kāṃkṣā vā vicikitsā vā so āyuṣman mahākāśyapa praśnaṃ pṛccheyā saṃbhāvema ca vayam āyuṣman mahākāśyapa evaṃ ca anuvṛttā ato ca uttari bhūyo ato ca śreyo || atha khalu āyuṣmāṃ mahākāśyapas tāṃ bhikṣūṃ dharmyā kathayā saṃdarśayitvā samādāpayitvā samuttejayitvā saṃpraharṣayitvā utthāyāsanāto prakrame ||

aciraprakrānto ca āyuṣmān mahākāśyapo sarvāvantena kālena nāgāvalokitena sthūlanandāṃ bhikṣuṇīṃ avaloketi api nāma cittaṃ prasādeya tasya cedaṃ śakaṭacakramātrā pṛthivī anuparivartte na ca sā sthūlanandā bhikṣūṇī cittaṃ prasādesi | praduṣṭacittā sthūlanandā bhikṣūṇī āyuṣmato mahākāśyapasya santike vivaram adāsi samanantaraṃ kālagatā ca punar āyuṣmante mahākāśyape cittam āghātetvā anyatarasmiṃ mahānarake upapannā evam etaṃ śruyati ||

samāptaṃ mahākāśyapasya vastupravrajyāsūtraṃ ||
