A Former Life of Ājñāta Kauṇḍinya

bhikṣū bhagavantam āhaṃsuḥ || kasya bhagavan karmasya vipākena āyuṣmatā ājñātakauṇḍinyena sarvaprathamaṃ dharmaṃ ājñātaṃ || bhagavān āha || etasyaivaiṣa bhikṣavaḥ pūrvapraṇidhānaṃ ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo atītam adhvānaṃ rājagṛhe nagare kumbhakāraśālāyāṃ pratyekabuddhena pittavyādhikena pratiśrayo yācito | so tena kumbhakāreṇa upasthito ca pittābādhāto mocito || tena dāni pratyekabuddhena ye paricāritā pratyekbuddhā te tahiṃ bhārgavaśālāṃ tasya pratyekabuddhasya pittavyādhikasya kṣemaṇīyapṛcchā āgatā || bhārgavo pratyekabuddhṃ tato pittābādhāto mocetvā pṛcchati | kena vo prathamaṃ dharmaṃ ājñātaṃ ||

so pratyekabuddho āha || mayā sarvaprathamaṃ dharmo ājñāto paścād etehi || so dāni bhārgavo praṇidhānam utpādeti | yaṃ mayā kuśalamūlam upacitṃ tava upasaṃsthānaparicaryāṃ kṛtvā tena kuśalamūlena aham api sarvaprathamaṃ buddhasya bhagavato dharmaṃ deśitam ājāneyaṃ | na ca lābhasatkāraṃ spṛhayeyaṃ prāntāni ca śayyāsanāni spṛhayeyaṃ itaretareṇa ca piṇḍapātreṇa santuṣṭo bhaveyaṃ nirjhareṣu ca vanakhaṇḍeṣu ekasya mṛtabhūtasya śarīranikṣepanaṃ bhaveya || bhagavān āha || syāt khalu punar bhikṣavaḥ yuṣmākam evam asyād anyaḥ sa tena kālena tena samayena rājagṛhe nagare bhārgavo abhūṣi na khalv etad evaṃ draṣṭavyaṃ | tat kasya hetoḥ | eṣa sa bhikṣavaḥ ājñātakauṇḍinyasthaviras tena kālena tena samayena rājagṛhe bhārgavo abhūṣi | yaṃ se tsya pratyekabuddhasya pittābādhikasya pratiśrayaṃ dinnaṃ ca pāricaryā kṛtā praṇidhānaṃ ca utpāditaṃ yathā tava sarvaprathamaṃ dharmo ājñāto paścād anyehi evam ahaṃ pi sarvaprathamaṃ buddhasya bhagavato dharmaṃ deśitam ājāneyaṃ tasya karmasya vipākena tenājñātakauṇḍinyena sarvaprathamaṃ dharmaṃ ājñātaṃ paścād anyehi ||

yaṃ kuśalamūlam upacitam aśanavasanabhakṣyapāricariyāye |
tena kuśalamūlen puruṣavarasamāgamo bhavatu ||

yathā tvayā sarvaprathamaṃ dharmo ājñāto paścānyehi |
evam ahaṃ sarvaprathamaṃ deśitam ājāneyaṃ jinasya ||

alpecchaḥ saṃtuṣṭaḥ itaretarapiṇḍakena yāpento |
praśamasukhavṛṃhitamano na lābhasatkāraṃ spṛhayeyaṃ ||

prāntāraṇya mṛhayūthaparyaṭitā parvatāni + + + |
tatra mama nidhanasamaye śarīranikṣepaṇo bhaveyā ||

satkṛta asatkṛtā vā āyur vijñānaṃ uṣmagatā va |
kasya janeti prītir dharaṇirajasame mṛtaśarīre ||

bhikṣū bhagavantam āhansuḥ || bhagavatā ātmaparityāgāni kṛtvā putraparityāgāni kṛtvā dārāparityāgāni kṛtvā arthaparityāgāni kṛtvā rājyaparityāgāni ca kṛtvā anuttarāṃ samyaksaṃbodhim abhisaṃbuddhitvā āyuṣmān ājñātakauṇḍinyaḥ mahatā arthena saṃyojitaḥ || bhagavān āha || na bhikṣava etarahim eva mayā eṣa ājñātakauṇḍinyo mahatā arthena saṃyojito | anyadāpi eṣo mayā ātmatyāgaṃ kṛtvā mahatā arthena saṃyojitaḥ || bhikṣū āhansuḥ || anyadāpi bhagavan* || bhagavān āha || anyadāpi bhikṣavo ||

bhūtapūrvaṃ atītamadhvāne kośalarājā abhūṣi kṛtapuṇyo maheśākhyo mahābalo mahākośo mahāvāhano | tasya ca rājyaṃ ṛddhaṃ abhūṣi sphīto ca kṣemo ca subhikṣo ca ākīrṇajanamanuṣyo ca sukhitamanuṣyo ca praśāntadaṇḍaḍimbaḍamaraḥ sunigṛhītataskaro vyavahārasaṃpanno dharmeṇa paripāliyanto | tasya ca rājño deśe deśe kalyāṇakīrtiśabdaśloko dāyakadānapatisatkṛtaḥ parānugrahapravṛtto paralokadarśī || tasya dhārmiko ti kṛtvā aparalokadarśī kāśirājā tasya taṃ kośalarājyaṃ atikrāmitukāmo caturaṃgaṃ balakāyaṃ saṃnāhayitvā hastikāyam aśvakāyaṃ rathakāyaṃ pattikāyaṃ taṃ kośalaviṣayaṃ āgato || tasya kośalarājasya amātyehi bhaṭabalāgreṇa ca kāśirājo bhagno ekāṃśena palāno sarvo balāgro bhinno || so aparakālena bhūyo caturaṃgena balakāyena āgato punar api bhagno gato || evaṃ so kāśirājā punarpunaś caturaṃgena balakāyena taṃ kośalaviṣayaṃ āgacchati || tatra bahūni prāṇisahasrāṇi ubhayato anyamanyasya asiśaraśaktitomarāṇi kāye upanipātentā anayavyasanam āpadyanti || tasya kośalarājño dhārmikasya sakṛpasya paralokadarśisya tāni prāṇasahasrāṇi anayavyasanam āpadyantāni dṛṣṭvā cittasya saṃvegam utpannaṃ adhigataṃ rājyaṃ rājyalobhena jananidhanaṃ imaṃ evarūpaṃ adharmaṃ kriyati || so saṃvigno taṃ rājyaṃ ujjhitvā eka advitīyo ajñātaveśena dakṣiṇāpathaṃ gacchati tatra yena kenacid vyavahāreṇa ātmano vṛttiṃ kalpayiṣyāmi ||

so dāni gacchanto adhvānakilāṃto vātātapasaṃtapto nyagrodhasya heṣṭhā śītalāyāṃ chāyāyāṃ viśramanto āsati aparo ca samudrayātriko sārthavāho vipannayānapātro sarveṇa arthena samudre vinaṣṭena dakṣiṇāto samudrāto kośalaṃ āgacchati || śṛṇoti kośalarājā dhārmiko sakṛpo ca parānugrahapravṛtto ca bahūni prāṇasahasrāṇi patantāni dhanakṣīṇān abhyuddharati arthamātrāye parigrahaṃ karoti iti so me arthamātraṃ dāsyati yena punar vyavahāraṃ kariṣyāmi ātmānaṃ ca patitaṃ uddhariṣyāmi || so dāni taṃ kośalarājaṃ āśāṃ kṛtvā dakṣiṇāpathāto anupūrveṇa kośalarājño viṣayam anuprāptaḥ || so tahiṃ nyagrodhe kośalarājño sakāśam āgato || rājā taṃ sārthavāhaṃ pṛcchati | dharmabhrāte mā śrānto si klānto vāsi viśrama imā śītalā nyagrodhacchāyā tvaṃ cādhvāklānto || so dāni āha || dharmabhrātā sukhan te bhavatu gamiṣyāmīti || rājā dāni āha || dharmabhrātā te kahiṃ tvaritaṃ gamanaprayojanaṃ yaṃ necchasi viśramituṃ pi || so dāni āha || ahaṃ bhadramukha amukāto adhiṣṭhānāto sārthavāho samudrayātriko | so ahan tato svakāto adhiṣṭhānāto prabhūtenārthena nānāprakāraṃ paṇyam ādāya samudrapattaneṣu yuktena yānapātreṇa mahāntaṃ samudram otīrṇo | tatra me mahāsamudre taṃ yānapātraṃ arthabharitaṃ vipannaṃ phalakenāhaṃ samudrāto jīvanto pratyuttīrṇo śarīramātreṇa | so haṃ gacchāmi kośalarājño sakāśaṃ arthamātrasya arthāye yena punaḥ vyavahāraṃ kareyaṃ patitaṃ cātmānaṃ uddhareyaṃ | etāye āśāye evaṃ dūrato smi caranto āgato ||

so dāni kośalarājā tasya sārthavāhasya vacanaṃ śrutvā prārodīd aśrūṇi ca pravarteti || sārthavāho taṃ āha || bhadramukha kiṃ rodasi || rājā āha || rodayāmi yaṃ tvaṃ vipannayānapātro āśābhūto dūrato mama uddiśya āgato kośalarājā mama arthamātrāye saṃgrahaṃ kariṣyati yena punar vyavahāraṃ ca kariṣyāmi patitaṃ cātmānam uddhariṣyāmi | mama ca taṃ rājyaṃ kāśirājñā ākrāntaṃ śarīramātreṇa dakṣiṇāpathaṃ prayāto yena kenacid vyavahāreṇa ātmano vṛttiṃ kalpayiṣyāmi | evaṃ rodāmi yat tvaṃ mama śabdena evaṃ dūraṃ āgato imā ca mama edṛśā vipattī rājyato smi paribhraṣṭo || so dāni sārthavāho taṃ kośalarājānaṃ gāthāye adhyābhāṣe ||

tava pravādena hi tyāgaśūra
dūrato śrutvā iha āgato smi |
manorathāśābalavṛṃhitā me
āśā nirāśā kṛta darśanena ||

rājā āha ||

mano­ratha­śatāna ahaṃ pradātā
sadevamanuje sadṛśo na me sti |
prāṇāṃ tyajiṣyaṃ tava kāraṇāya
mā me pravādo vitatho bhaveyā ||

so dāni rājā taṃ sārthavāhaṃ nirāśaṃ mūrchitvā bhūmyāṃ patitaṃ samāśvāsayati tvaṃ dūrato mamāśābhūto uddiśya ihāgato ahaṃ tatra tathā kariṣyāmi yathā tava niṣphalaṃ āgamanaṃ na bhaviṣyati | tava kāraṇenātmānaṃ parityajiṣyāmi || mama paścād bāhuṃ baṃdhitvā kāśirājño upanāmehi | tato te kāśirājā tuṣṭo prabhūtaṃ arthaṃ dāsyati | kāmaṃ ahaṃ ātmānaṃ parityajāmi mā punas tava niṣphalā mamoddiśya āśā bhavatu || so dāni sārthavāho āha ||

na utsahāmi puruṣarṣabhasya pracartuṃ pāpaṃ dhanakāraṇārthaṃ |
yathāśravo tādṛśaṃ darśanan te suduṣkaraṃ kriyati lokapaṇḍita ||

rājā āha ||

kiṃ jīvitaphalaṃ yeṣāṃ loke śravo na mahābhago |
arthārtho na upagato bhagnapraṇayo nivarteya ||

kāmaṃ śatrubhir vadhiṣyaṃ suduṣkaraṃ
kāmaṃ śatruś chetsyati mahya gātraṃ |
kāmaṃ hi prāpsyaṃ vedanām atitīvrāṃ
duḥkhaṃ sahiṣyaṃ mā ca te syān nirāśā ||

so ca kāśirājā kośalarājño jīvitena nandati pratyahaś caivaṃ ghoṣayati yaḥ kośalarājño śīrṣam ānayati tasya mahāntaṃ dānaṃ dadāmīti || yāvat tena kośalarājñā punarpunar ucyamānena sa kośalarājā sārthavāhena paścād bāhubandhanaṃ kṛtvā kāśirājño upanāmitaṃ ||

kāśirājā āha || aho ayaṃ rājā śūraś ca kṛtayogyaś ca kathaṃ tvayā badhvā ānītaḥ || yāvat tena sarvam ātmanaḥ āgamanakāraṇaṃ kathitaṃ kāśirājā ca vismayajātaḥ āha || na yuktam asmākaṃ evaṃ dhārmikasya rājño rājyam apahartum iti || punar api kośalarājānaṃ svake rājye abhiṣiṃcya kāśirājyaṃ gataḥ | yāvat tena kośalarājñā sārthavāhasya mahāntaṃ dhanaskaṃdhaṃ dattam iti ||

syāt khalu punaḥ bhikṣavo yuṣmākam evam asyād anyaḥ sa kośalarājā | nānyas tadā ahaṃ sa bhikṣavas tadā kośalarājā abhūṣi || nānyo draṣṭavyaḥ ājñātakauṇḍinyaḥ tadāsārthavāho abhūṣi || tadāpi mayā ātmaparityāgaṃ kṛtvā eṣo mahatā arthena saṃyojitaḥ etarahiṃ pi mayā bahūni duḥkhaparityāgaśatāni parityajitvā anuttarāṃ samyaksaṃbodhim abhisaṃbuddhitvā mahatārthena saṃyojitaḥ ||

samāptaṃ ājñātakauṇḍinyasya jātakaṃ ||
