uddānam
śākyā paṃcanakādhaś ca sāṅghikaṃ paudgalikaṃ ca vastubhaṅgena |
kārayet pratisaṃstaraṇaṃ bhūmir araṇyaṃ ca tricīvaram |
ucchedyam araṇyaṃ bhikṣusthaviro lābhaṣaṭkair bhavati paścimam ||

Old monks are entitled to veneration

buddho bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍadasyārāme; tena khalu samayena saṃbahulānāṃ upasthānaśālāyāṃ saṃniṣaṇṇānāṃ saṃnipatitānām ayam evaṃrūpo ’bhūd antarākathāsamudāhāraḥ; ko ’smābhir āyuṣmantaḥ satkartavyo gurukartavyo mānayaitavyaḥ pūjayitavyaḥ? kasya cāsmābhir abhivādanavandanapratyutthānāṃ­jalisāmīcī­karma kartavyam? ko ’smākam arhati agrāsanam agrodakam agrapiṇḍapātaṃ paribhoktum iti? tatraike evam āhuḥ śākyaḥ pravrajita iti; anye tv evam āhuḥ yo brāhmaṇaḥ pravrajita iti; apare yaḥ kṣatriyaḥ pravrajitaḥ; apare yo vaiśyaḥ pravrajitaḥ; apare yaḥ śūdraḥ pravrajitaḥ; apare uccāt kulāt pravrajito ’nyūnāt; āḍhyāt kulāt pravrajito ’dīnāt; apare yo ’bhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādikaḥ kalyāṇavākyo vākkaraṇenopeto jñāto mahāpuṇyaḥ sūtradharo vinayadharo mātṛkādharo bahuśruto dhārmakathikaḥ sthaviro rājanyaḥ āraṇyakaḥ traicīvariko nāmatikaḥ pāṃsukulikaḥ piṇḍapātikaḥ ekāsanikaḥ khalupaścādbhaktiko vṛkṣamūlikaḥ śmāśāniko ’bhyavakāśikaḥ naiṣadiko yathāsaṃstariko yo lābhī anityasaṃjñāyāḥ pūrvavad yāvad yo ’rhann aṣṭavimokṣadhyāyīti; apare evam āhuḥ sarveṣām asmākam āyuṣmanto na sameti yaduta nānāprajñaptyā; ete vayaṃ yena bhagavāṃs tenopasaṃkramāmaḥ; upasaṃkramya bhagavantam etam arthaṃ paripṛcchāmaḥ; yathāsmākaṃ sa bhagavān vyākariṣyati tathainaṃ dhārayiṣyāma iti

atha saṃbahulā bhikṣavo yena bhagavāṃs tenopasaṃkrāntāḥ; upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte niṣaṇṇāḥ; ekāntaniṣaṇṇāḥ saṃbahulā bhikṣavo bhagavantam idam avocan; ihāsmakaṃ bhadanta saṃbahulānāṃ bhikṣūṇām upasthānaśālāyaṃ saṃniṣaṇṇānāṃ saṃnipatitānām ayam evaṃrūpo ’bhūd antarākathāsamudāhāraḥ; pūrvavad yāvad yathāsmākaṃ bhagavān vyākariṣyati tathainaṃ dhārayiṣyāma iti; te vayaṃ bhadanta bhagavantam etam evārthaṃ patipṛcchāmaḥ; ko ’smābhiḥ sat­kartavyo gurukartavyo mānayitavyaḥ pūjayitavyaḥ? pūrvavad yāvad agrapiṇḍapātam paribhoktum iti; bhagavān āha: vṛddhatarako yuṣmābhir bhikṣavaḥ satkartavyo gurukartavyo mānayitavyaḥ pūjayitavyaḥ; abhivādanavandanapratyutthānāṃ­jalisāmīcī­karma kartavyam; sa ca yuṣmākam arhaty agrāsanam agrodakam agrapiṇḍapātam paribhkotum iti

uktaṃ bhagavatā: vṛddhatarako bhikṣur yuṣmābhiḥ satkartavyah; pūrvavad yāvad agrāsanaṃ paribhoktum iti

Old house-holders, etc., are not entitled to veneration

bhikṣavaḥ āgārikān vṛddhān satkurvanti gurukurvanti mānayanti pūjayanti; śrutvā brāhmaṇagṛhapatayo ’vadhyāyanti kṣipanti vivācayanti; āryā vayaṃ kāmabhoginaḥ kāmapaṃkanimagnāḥ; kathaṃ yūyam asmākaṃ satkurvatha? etat prakaraṇaṃ bhikṣavo bhagavata ārocayanti; bhagvān āha: pravrajitān bhikṣavo mayā sandhāyoktaṃ no tv āgarikān iti

bhikṣavaḥ anyatīrthikān vṛddhān dṛṣṭvā satkurvanti gurukurvanti mānayanti pūjayanti; bhagavān āha; iha dhārmikān mayā sandhāyoktaṃ no tu bāhyakān iti

te śrāmaṇerakān vṛddhapravrajitān dṛṣṭvā satkurvanti gurukurvanti mānayanti pūjayanti; bhagavān āha: upasaṃpannān bhikṣavo mayā sandhāyoktaṃ no tu śrāmaṇerakān iti

te navopasaṃpannān vṛddhān satkurvani gurukurvanti mānayanti pūjayanti; bhagavān āha: anyonyaṃ varṣāgraṃ pṛṣṭvā vanditavyaṃ; te pṛṣṭāḥ santo janmavarṣāṇi kathayanti; bhagavān āha; upasaṃpadvarṣāgraṃ praṣṭavyam iti; bhikṣavo na jānate ḥkati varṣāgrāṇītiḥ; bhagavān āha; sāmayikam ārocayitavyam; bhikṣavo na jānate kati sāmayikānīti; bhagabān āha: paṃceme bhikṣavaḥ samayāḥ, haimantikaṃ graiṣmikaṃ vārṣikaṃ mṛtavārṣikaṃ dīrghavārṣikam iti; tatra haimantikaṃ catvāro māsāḥ; graiṣmikaṃ catvāro māsāḥ; ḥvārṣikam eko māsaḥḥ; mṛtavārṣikam ekaṃ rātrindivasam; dīrghavārṣikaṃ rātryūnās trayo māsāḥ; ity evaṃ sāmayikam ārocayitvā yaḥ pūrvopasaṃpannaḥ sa vanditavyaḥ

apare bhikṣavaś catvāro vandyāḥ; katame catvāro vandyāḥ? sadevakasya tāval lokasya samārakasya sabrahmakasya saśramaṇabrāhmaṇikāyā prajāyāḥ sadevamānuṣāyās tathāga­tārhat­samya­ksaṃ­buddho vandyaḥ; sarveṣāṃ gṛhiṇaḥ pravrajitā vandyāḥ; sarveṣām upasaṃpannānāṃ pūrvopasaṃpannā vandyāḥ sthāpayitvā bhikṣuṇīm; tasyā varṣaśatopasaṃpannāyā api tadahaḥ upasaṃpanno bhikṣur vandyaḥ; sarvasyānupa­saṃ­pannakasyopa­saṃ­pannako vandyaḥ

daśāvandyāḥ; katame ḥdaśa?ḥ pārivāsiko mūlapārivāsikaḥ paryuṣitaparivāsaḥ mānāpyacārikaś caritamānāpyo ’darśanāyotkṣiptakaḥ apratikarmāyotkṣiptakaḥ apratinisṛṣṭe pāpake dṛṣṭigate utkṣiptakaḥ sarvo gṛhī ḥsarvāśḥ cānupasaṃpannaḥ

yadā bhagavatā yathāvṛddhikayā prajñaptās tadā bhikṣavo ’nyonyaṃ satkurvanti gurukurvanti mānayanti pūjayanti; te ’nyonyaṃ satkurvvanto ḥgurukurvantoḥ mānayantaḥ pūjayanto vardhante kuśalair dharmair utpalaṃ vā yathodake

bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: paśya bhadanta yadā bhagavatā yathāvṛddhikayā prajñaptās tadā bhikṣavo ’nyonyaṃ satkurvanti gurukurvanti mānayanti pūjayanti; te ’nyonyaṃ satkurvanto gurukurvanto mānayantaḥ pūjayanto vardhante kuśalair dharmair utpalaṃ vā yathodake iti; bhagavān āha: kim atra bhikṣavaḥ āścaryaṃ yad idānīm mayā vigatarāgeṇa vigatadveṣeṇa vigatamohena parimuktena jāti­jarāv­yādhi­mara­ṇaśoka­pari­deva­duḥkha­daurmanasyopāyāsaiḥ sarvajñena sarvākārajñena sarvaj­ñānaj­ñeyavaśiprāptena yathāvṛddhikāyāṃ prajñaptāyāṃ yathāvṛddhikām āgamya bhikṣavo ’nyonyaṃ satkurvanti gurukurvanti pūrvavad yāvad utpalaṃ vā yathodake iti; yat tu mayā sarāgeṇa sadveṣeṇa samohenāparimuktena jāti­jarāv­yādhi­mara­ṇaśoka­pari­deva­duḥkha­daurmanasyopāyāsair vinipatitaśarīreṇa yathāvṛddhikāyāṃ prajñaptāyāṃ yathāvṛddhikām āgamya sakalo jambūdvīpanivāsī janakāyo yadbhūyasā praṇīte trayastriṃśe devanikāye upapannas tac chrūyatām

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavaḥ kāśīṣu janapade anyatamasmin vanagahane catvāraḥ prāṇinaḥ prativasanti kapiñjalaḥ śaśo markaṭo gajaś ca; te ca parasparaṃ sakhyenāvasthitāḥ sahitāḥ samagrāḥ saṃmodamānā avivadamānā aśaṃkino yatheṣṭavihāratayā kālam atināmayanti; yāvad apareṇa samayena teṣāṃ buddhir utpannā; asti vayaṃ bhavantaḥ parasparaṃ sakhyenāvasthitāḥ sahitāḥ samagrāḥ saṃmodamānā avivadamānāḥ; kin tu na jānīmaḥ ko ’smābhiḥ satkartavyo gurukartavyo mānayitavyaḥ pūjayitavyaḥ iti; yan nu vayaṃ yathāvṛddhikāṃ prajñapayema iti; te parasparaṃ saṃjalpaṃ kartum ārabdhā iti; ko ’smākaṃ vṛddha iti; tataḥ kapiṃjalena vaṭavṛkṣo darśitaḥ; bhavantaḥ eṣa vaṭavṛkṣaḥ kena kiyatpramāṇo dṛṣṭa iti; hastī kathayati; mayā yūthena sahānena pathā gacchatā ayaṃ dṛṣṭo matpramāṇa eva uccatveneti; markaṭaḥ kathayati; mayā yūthena sahānena pathā gacchatā ayaṃ dṛṣṭo mama tulya evoccatveneti; te kathayanti; tvam asya vṛddha iti; śaśaḥ kathayati; mayāpy asya dvipatrakasya patreṣv evāvaśyayanbindavo jihvayā nirlīḍhā iti; te kathayanti: tvam apy anayor vṛddha iti; kapiñjalaḥ kathayati; paśyata yūyam enaṃ vaṭavṛkṣaṃ mahatpramāṇākāram; te kathayanti: paśyāmaḥ; etasmān mayā phalāni bhakṣayitvāsmin pradeśe uccāraḥ kṛtas tasmād ayaṃ jāta iti; te kathayanti: yady evaṃ tvam asmākaṃ sarveṣāṃ vṛddha iti; tato hastī sarveṣāṃ satkartuṃ ārabdhaḥ; markaṭaḥ śaśaṃ kapiṃjalaṃ ca; śāśaḥ kapiṃjalam eva; te evaṃ yathāvṛddhikayā satkurvantas tasmin vanagahane itaś cāmutaś ca paribhramanti; yadā viṣamanimnāḥ pradeśā gantavyā bhavanti tadā hastinaṃ markaṭo ’bhirohati markaṭam śaśaḥ śaśam api kapiṃjalaḥ

teṣām evaṃ pravṛddhasnehānāṃ sagauravāṇāṃ ca buddhir utpannā; asti vayaṃ bhavantaḥ pravṛddhasnehāḥ sagauravāś ca; anyad api tāvat kiṃcit kuśalaṃ samādāya vartema iti; kiṃ kurmaḥ; kapiṃjalaḥ kathayati; prāṇātipātāt prativiramāmaḥ; kīdṛṣo ’smākaṃ prāṇātipātaḥ? kapiṃjalaḥ kathayati: santi tṛṇapuṣpaphalāni sapṛāṇakāni santi niṣprāṇakāni; tad asmābhir adyāgreṇa saprāṇakāni parityajya niṣprāṇakāni; paribhoktavyāni; te saprāṇakāni parityajya niṣprāṇakāni paribhoktum ārabdhāḥ

teṣām etad abhavat; asti vayaṃ prāṇātipātāt prativiratā no tv adattādānāt prativiramāmaḥ; kīdṛśo ’smākam adattādānam? kapiṃjalaḥ kathayati: santi saparigrahāṇi tṛṇapatrapuṣpaphalāni santi niṣparigrahāṇi; tad asmābhir adyāgreṇa saparigrahāṇi parityajya niṣparigrahāṇi pari­bhoktavyāni; te saparigrahāṇi parityajya niṣparigrahāṇi paribhoktum ārabdhāḥ

teṣām etad abhavat; asti vayam adattādānāt prativiratāḥ no tu kāmamithyācārāt; yan nu vayaṃ kāmamithyācārāt prativiramāmaḥ; kīdṛśo ’smākaṃ kāmamithyācāraḥ? kapiṃjalaḥ katyayati: vayam gamyā api gacchāmaḥ; agamyā api gacchāmaḥ; tad asmābhir adyāgreṇa gamyaiva gantavyā nāgamyā te gamyāṃ gacchanti nāgamyām.

teṣām etad abhavat: asti vayaṃ kāmamithyācārāt prativiratāḥ; no tu mṛṣāvādāt; yan nu vayaṃ mṛṣāvādāt prativiramāmaḥ; kīdṛśo ’smākaṃ mṛṣāvādaḥ? kapiṃjalaḥ kathayati: vayaṃ yadvā tadvā vipralapāmaḥ; tad asmābhir adyāgreṇa na yadvā tadvā vipralapitavyam; vicārya vicārya kāle vāg udīrayitavyā; te na yadvā tadvā vipralapanti kiṃ tu vicārya vicārya kālena vācam udīrayanti

teṣām etad abhavat; asti vayaṃ mṛṣāvādāt prativiratāḥ; no tu surāmaireyamadyapramādasthānāt prativiratāḥ; yan nu vayaṃ surāmaireyamadyapramādasthānāt prativiramāmaḥ; kidṛśam asmākaṃ surāmaireyamadyapramādasthānam? kapiṃjalaḥ kathayati: santi mādanīyāni phalāni santy amādanīyāni; tad asmābhir adyāgreṇa mādanīyāni phalāni parityajyamādanīyāni phalāni paribhoktavyāni; te mādanīyāni phalāni parityajyamādanīyāni phalāni paribhoktum ārabdhāḥ

yadā te pañcasu vratapadeṣu pratiṣṭhāpitās tadā kapiṃjalaḥ kathayati: asti vayaṃ bhavantaḥ paṃcasu vratapadeṣu pratiṣṭhitāḥ; yan nu vayam anyān api paṃcasu vratapadeṣu pratiṣṭhāpayāmaḥ; te kathayanti: evaṃ kurmaḥ; ko yuṣmākaṃ pratiṣṭhāpayati? markaṭaḥ kathayati: ahaṃ sarvān śākhāmṛgān pratiṣṭhāpayāmi; tataḥ śaśaḥ kathayati: ahaṃ sarvān śaśān lomaśān mṛgāṃś ca pratiṣṭhāpayāmi; hastī kathayati: ahaṃ sarvān hastinaḥ siṃhān vyāghradvīpinaś ca pratiṣṭhāpayāmi; kapiṃjalaḥ kathayati: yady evam etat saṃkṣepād yuṣmākam avinayā apadā dvipadāś catuṣpadāḥ pakṣiṇaś ca tān ahaṃ sarvān paṃcasu vratapadeṣu pratiṣṭhāpayāmīti

tatas te kāśīviṣaye yāvattiryagyoni­gatāḥ prāṇinas te sarve paṃcasu vratapadeṣu pratiṣṭhāpitāḥ; te anyonyam avyābādhamānās tasmin vanaṣaṇḍe saṃprajānadvihāriṇo yatheṣṭaṃ viharanti; teṣām anubhāvād devaḥ kālavarṣī saṃvṛttaḥ; sadā puṣpaphalā vṛkṣāḥ, śasyavatī vasumatī; te manuṣyair dṛṣṭā anyonyam avyābādhamānā viharantaḥ, sadā puṣpaphalā vṛkṣāḥ, śasyavatī vasumatī; rājā kathayati: ahaṃ dharmeṇa rājyaṃ kārayāmi mamaiṣo ’nubhāva iti; antaḥpuraṃ kumārāmātyā bhaṭabalāgraṃ naigamajānapadāś ca ḥkathayanti; asmākam eṣo ’nubhāvaḥḥ; rājā saṃlakṣayati; sarva ete kathayanti mamānubhāvo mamānubhāva iti; tan na jñāyate kasyānubhāva iti; sa kutūhalajāto naimittikān āhūya pṛṣṭavān; tair api na jñātam; yāvad vārāṇasyāṃ nātidūre udyānam; tatra pañcābhijña riṣiḥ prativasati sakalasya vārāṇasīnivāsino janakāyasya pūjyo mānyo ’bhivādyaś ca; tato rājā tasya ṛṣeḥ sakāśam upasaṃkrāntaḥ pādayor nipatya kathayati: maharṣe mama vijite yāvattityagyonigatāḥ prāṇinas te sarve anyonyam avyābādhamānāḥ saṃprajānadvihāriṇo yatheṣṭaṃ viharanti; devaḥ kālavarṣī sadā puṣpaphalā vṛkṣāḥ śasyavatī ca vasumatī; tasmān mamaitad abhavat: ahaṃ dharmeṇa rājyaṃ kārayāmi; mamaiso ’nubhāva iti; antaḥpuraṃ kumārāmātyā bhaṭabalāgraṃ naigamajānapadāś ca saṃlakṣayanti: asmākam eṣo ’nuhāva iti; tan na jñāyate kasyāyam anubhāva iti; kautukaś ca me mahān; tvam arhasi saṃśayaṃ chettum; kasyāyam anubhāva iti; sa kathayati: mahārāja ma tavaiṣo ’nubhāvo nāntaḥpurasya na kumārāṇāṃ nāmātyānāṃ na bhaṭabalāgrasya na naigamajānapadānaṃ­; api tu tava vijite catvāraḥ prāniṇaḥ prativasanti; teṣām ayam anubhāva tit; rājā kathayati: gacchāmi tān paśyamīti; ṛṣiḥ kathayati: mahārāja kiṃ tava tair dṛṣṭair api tu yat te samādāya vartante tat samādāya vartasveti; kiṃ te samādāya vartante? pañca vratapadāni; maharṣe kidṛśāni pañca vratapadāni? mahārāja te prāṇinaṃ jīvitān na vyavaropayanti; parasvaṃ nāpaharanti; agamyāgamanaṃ na kurvanti; mṛṣāvādaṃ na bhāṣante; madyapānaṃ ca nādhyācaranti; rājā kathayati: maharṣe yady evaṃ aham apy etāni pañca vratapadāni samādāya vartema; atha sa rājā pañca vratapadāni samādāya vartitum ārabdhaḥ; rājā pañca vratapadāni samādāya vartata iti devyo ’pi pañaca vratapadāni samādāya vartitum ārabdhāḥ; kumārā amātyā bhaṭabalāgraṃ naigamajānapadā api pañca vratapadāni samādaya vartitum ārabdhāni; pṛtisīmaiḥ koṭṭarājabhiḥ śrutam; rājā brahmadattaḥ pañca vratapadāni samādāya vartate sārdham antaḥpureṇa kumārair amātyair bhaṭabalāgrair naigamajānapadair iti; śrutvā ca punas te ’pi pañcavratapadāni samādaya vartitum ārabdhāḥ sārdham antaḥpureṇa kumārair amātyair bhaṭabalāgrair naigamajānapadair iti; bhūyasā sarva eva janakāyaḥ pañca vratapadāni samādāya vartitum ārabdhaḥ

tena khalu samayena jambūdvīpe yaḥ kālaṃ karoti sa kāyasya bhedāt praṇīteṣu deveṣū trayastriṃśeṣūpapadyate; tataḥ śakro devendraḥ āpūryamāṇaṃ devaparṣadaṃ dṛṣṭvā ca punar gāthāṃ bhāṣate;

sagauravāḥ sapratīśā viharanti tapovane |

kapiṃjalabrahmacaryaṃ pṛthaglokaprakāśitam || iti |
bhagavān āha: kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo ’sau kapiṃjalaḥ aham eva saḥ tena kālena tena samayena; śaśaḥ śāriputro bhikṣur markaṭo maudgalyāyano bhikṣur gaja ānandaḥ; tadāpi mayā yathāvṛddhikāyāṃ prajñaptāyāṃ yathāvṛddhikām āgamya sakalo jambūdvīpanivāsī janakāyo bhūyasā trayastriṃśe devanikāye upapannaḥ; etarhy api mayā yathāvṛddhikāyāṃ prajñaptāyāṃ yathāvṛddhikām āgamya bhikṣavo ’nyonyaṃ satkurvanto gurukurvanto mānayantaḥ pūyayanto vardhante kuśalair dharmair utpalaṃ vā yathodake

The Buddha eulogises the order by age

tasmāt tarhi bhikṣavaḥ sagauravā viharata sapratīṣāḥ sabhayavaśavartinaḥ sabrahmacāriṣu sthavireṣu madhyeṣu navakeṣu; tat kasya hetoḥ? sa tāvad bhikṣavo bhikṣur agauravo viharann apratīśaḥ abhayavaśavartī sthavireṣu madhyeṣu navakeṣu āsamudācārikān dharmān paripūrayiṣyati nedaṃ sthānaṃ vidyate; āsamudācārikān dharmān aparipūrya śaikṣān dharmān paripūrayiṣyati nedaṃ sthānaṃ vidyate; śaikṣān dharmān aparipūrya śīlaskandhaṃ samādhiskandhaṃ prajñāskandhaṃ vimuktiskandhaṃ vimuktij­ñāna­darśanaskandhaṃ paripūrayiṣyati nedaṃ sthānaṃ vidyate; vimuktij­ñāna­darśanaskandham aparipūryānupādāya pari­nirvāsyati nedaṃ sthānaṃ vidyate; sa tāvad bhikṣavo bhikṣuḥ sagauravo viharan sapratīśaḥ sabhayavaśavartī brahmacāriṣu sthavireṣu madhyeṣu navakeṣu āsamudācārikān dharmān pūrayiṣyati sthānam etad vidyate; āsamudācārikān dharmān paripūrya śaikṣān dharmān paripūrayiṣyati sthānam etad vidyate; śaikṣān dharmān paripūrya śīlaskandhaṃ samādhiskandhaṃ prajñāskandhaṃ vimuktiskandhaṃ vimuktij­ñāna­darśanaskandhaṃ paripūrayiṣyati sthānam etad vidyate; vimuktij­ñāna­darśanaskandhaṃ paripūryānupādāya parinirvāsyati sthānam etad vidyate; tasmāt tahi bhikṣava evaṃ śikṣitavyam; yat sagauravā vihariṣyāmaḥ sapratīśāḥ sabhayavaśavartinaḥ ḥsabrahmacāriṣūḥ sthavireṣu madhyeṣu navakeṣu: ity evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam

The institution of vihāras

yadā bhagavatā pañcakā vinītās te araṇye prativasanti; te araṇye prativasanto āgamyā bhavanti siṃhānāṃ vyāghrāṇāṃ dvīpināṃ tarakṣūṇām

bhagavān saṃlakṣayati: kutra pūrvakāṇāṃ samyaksaṃbuddhānāṃ śrāvakā āvāsaṃ kalpitavantaḥ? paśyati vihāre; devatābhir apy evaṃ bhagavata ārocitam

bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ: kiṃ bhadānta anāthapiṇḍadena gṛhapatinā karma kṛtaṃ yasya karmaṇo vipākena ratnacitrāntakośo hiranyeśvaraś ca saṃvṛttaḥ? bhagavān āha: anāthapiṇḍadenaiva bhikṣavo gṛhapatinā karmāṇi kṛtyāny upacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayāny oghavat pratyupasthitāny avaśyabhāvīni; anāthapiṇḍadena gṛhapatinā karmāṇi kṛtāny upacitāni ko ’nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati; na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtany upacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau ḥvipacyanteḥ nābdhātau na tejodhātau na vāyudhātāv api tūpātteṣv eva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyante śubhāny aśubhāni ca:
