buddho bhagavāñ chrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane 'nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme | tasmin samaye 'śmakanagarāntake vāsavagrāmake balaseno nāma gṛhapatiḥ prativasaty āḍhyo mahādhano mahābhoge vistīrṇaviśāla­parig­raho vaiśravaṇadhanapratispardhī | tena sadṛśāt kulāt kalatram ānītam | sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayato na putro na duhitā | so 'putraḥ putrābhinandī śivavaruṇakuberaśakrabrahmādīn āyācate | ārāmadevatāṃ vanadevatāṃ śṛṅgāṭakadevatāṃ balipratigrāhikāṃ devatāṃ sahajāṃ sahadharmikāṃ nityānubaddhām api devatām āyācate | asti caiṣa lokapravādo yadāyācanahetoḥ putrā jāyante duhitaraś ceti | tac ca naivam | yady evam abhaviṣyad ekaikasya putrasahasram abhaviṣyat tadyathā rājñaś cakravartinaḥ | api tu trayāṇāṃ sthānānāṃ saṃmukhībhāvāt putrā jāyante duhitaraś ca | katameṣāṃ trayāṇām | mātāpitarau raktau bhavataḥ saṃnipatitau mātā kalyā bhavati ṛtumatī gandharvaś ca pratyupasthito bhavati | eṣāṃ trayāṇāṃ sthānānāṃ saṃmukhībhāvāt putrā jāyante duhitaraś ca | sa caivam āyācanaparas tiṣṭhati | anyatamaś ca satvaś caramabhavikaś caritaiṣī gṛhītamokṣamārgo 'ntarmukho nirvāṇe bahirmukhaḥ saṃsārād anarthikaḥ sarvabhavagaticyutyupa­pattiṣu antimadehadhārī anyatamasmād devanikāyāc cyutvā tasyāḥ prajāpatyāḥ kukṣim avakrāntaḥ | paṃcāveṇikā dharmā ekatye paṇḍitajātīye mātṛgrāme | katame paṃca | raktaṃ puruṣaṃ jānāti | viraktaṃ jānāti | kālaṃ jānāti ṛtuṃ jānāti | garbham avakrāntaṃ jānāti | yasya sakāśād garbham avakrāmati taṃ jānāti | dārakaṃ jānāti | dārikāṃ jānāti | saced dārako bhavati dakṣiṇaṃ kukṣiṃ niśritya tiṣṭhati | saced dārikā bhavati vāmaṃ kukṣiṃ niśritya tiṣṭhati | sāttamanāttamanāḥ svāmina ārocayati | diṣṭyāryaputra vardhasvāpannasatvāsmi saṃvṛttā | yathā ca me dakṣiṇaṃ kukṣiṃ niśritya tiṣṭhati niyataṃ dārako bhaviṣyati | so 'py āttamanāttamanā udānam udānayati | apy evāhaṃ cirakālābhilaṣitaṃ putramukhaṃ paśyeyaṃ samajāto me syān nāvajātaḥ | kṛtyāni me kurvīta bhṛtaḥ pratibibhṛyād dāyādyaṃ pratipadyeta kulavaṃśo me cirasthitikaḥ syāt | asmākaṃ cāpy atītakālagatānām alpaṃ vā prabhūtaṃ vā dānāni datvā puṇyāni kṛtvā asmākaṃ nāmnā dakṣiṇām ādekṣyati | idaṃ tayor yatra yatropapannayor gacchator anugacchatv iti | āpannasatvāṃ caināṃ viditvā upari prāsādatalagatām ayantritāṃ dhārayati śīte śītopakaraṇair uṣṇe uṣṇopakaraṇair vaidyaprajñaptair āhārair nātitiktair nātyamlair nātilavaṇair nātimadhurair nātikaṭukair nātikaṣāyais tiktāmlalavaṇama­dhura­kaṭukakaṣāyavivarjitair āhārair hārārdhahāravibhūṣitagātrīm apsarasam iva nandanavanavicāriṇīṃ mañcān mañcaṃ pīṭhāt pīṭham anavatarantīm adharimāṃ bhūmim | na cāsyāḥ kiṃcid amanojñaśabdaśravaṇaṃ yāvad eva garbhasya paripākāya | sāṣṭānāṃ vā navānāṃ vā māsānām atyayāt prasūtā | dārako jātaḥ | abhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādiko gauraḥ kanakavarṇaś chatrākāraśirāḥ pralambabāhur vistīrṇaviśālalalāṭaḥ saṅgatabhrūr uttuṅganāso ratnapratyuptikayā karṇikayā āmuktayālaṅkṛtaḥ | balasenena gṛhapatinā ratnaparīkṣakā āhūyoktāḥ | bhavanto ratnānāṃ mūlyaṃ kuruta iti | na śakyate ratnānāṃ mūlyaṃ kartum iti | dharmatā khalu yasya ratnasya na śakyate mūlyaṃ kartuṃ tasya koṭir mūlyaṃ kriyate | te kathayanti | gṛhapate eṣāṃ ratnānāṃ kotir mūlyam iti | tasya jñātayaḥ saṃgamya samāgamya trīṇi saptakāny ekaviṃśatidivasāni vistareṇa jātasya jātimahaṃ kṛtvā nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpayanti | kiṃ bhavatu dārakasya nāmeti | jñātayaḥ ūcuḥ | ayaṃ dārakaḥ koṭimūlyayā ratnapratyuptikayā āmuktayā MS karṇikayā jātaḥ śravaṇeṣu ca nakṣatreṣu | bhavatu dārakasya śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇa iti nāma | yasminn eva divase śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇo jātas tasminn eva divase balasenasya gṛhapater dvau preṣyadārakau jātau | tenaikasya dāsaka iti nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpitam aparasya pālaka iti | śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇo 'ṣṭābhyo dhātrībhyo 'nupradatto dvābhyām aṃsadhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ krīḍanikābhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ maladhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ kṣīradhātrībhyāṃ | so 'ṣṭābhir dhātrībhir unnīyate vardhyate kṣīreṇa dadhnā navanītena sarpiṣā sarpirmaṇḍenānyaiś cottaptottaptair upakaraṇaviśeṣair āśu vardhate hradastham iva paṅkajam | sa yadā mahān saṃvṛttas tadā lipyām upanyastaḥ saṃkhyāyāṃ gaṇanāyāṃ mudrāyām uddhāre nyāse nikṣepe vāstuparīkṣāyāṃ ratnaparīkṣāyām | so 'ṣṭāsu parīkṣāsūdghāṭako vācakaḥ paṇḍitaḥ paṭupracāraḥ saṃvṛttaḥ | tasya pitrā trīṇi vāsagṛhāṇi māpitāni | haimantikaṃ graiṣmikaṃ vārṣikam | trīṇy udyānāni māpitāni haimantikaṃ graiṣmikaṃ vārṣikam | trīṇy antaḥpurāṇi pratyupasthāpitāni jyeṣṭhakaṃ madhyamaṃ kanīyasam | sa upari prāsādatalagato niṣpuruṣeṇa tūryeṇa krīḍati ramate paricārayati | balaseno gṛhapatir nityam eva kṛṣikarmānte udyuktaḥ | sa koṭīkarṇas taṃ pitaram paśyatinityaṃ kṛṣikarmānte udyuktam | sa kathayati | tāta kasyārthe tvaṃ nityam eva kṛṣikarmānte udyuktaḥ | sa kathayati | putra yathā tvam upari prāsādatalagato niṣpuruṣeṇa tūryeṇa krīḍasi ramase paricārayasi yady aham apy evam eva krīḍeyaṃ rameyaṃ paricārayeyaṃ na cirād evāsmākaṃ bhogās tanutvaṃ parikṣayaṃ paryādānaṃ gaccheyuḥ | sa saṃlakṣayati | mamaivārthaṃ codanā kriyate | sa kathayati | tāta yady evaṃ paṇyam ādāya deśāntaraṃ gacchāmi | pitā kathayati | putra tāvantaṃ me ratnajātam asti yadi tvaṃ tilataṇḍulakolakulatthanyāyena ratnāni paribhokṣyase tathāpi me ratnānāṃ parikṣayo na syāt | sa kathayati | tātānujānīhi māṃ gacchāmi paṇyam ādāya deśāntaram iti | balasena tasyāvaśyaṃ nirbandhaṃ jñātvā anujñātaḥ | balasena gṛhapatinā vāsavagrāmake ghaṇṭāvaghoṣaṇaṃ kāritaṃ yo yuṣmākam utsahate śroṇena koṭīkarṇena sārthavāhena sārdham aśulkenātarpaṇyena mahāsamudram avatartuṃ sa mahāsamudragamanīyaṃ paṇyaṃ samudānayatu | pañcabhir vaṇikśatair mahāsamudragamanīyaṃ paṇyaṃ samudānītam | balaseno nāma gṛhapatiḥ saṃlakṣayati | kīdṛśena yānena śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇo yāsyati | sa saṃlakṣayati | saced dhastibhir hastinaḥ sukumārā durbharāś ca | aśvā api sukumārā durbharāś ca | gardabhāḥ smṛtimantaḥ sukumārāś ca | gardabhayānena gacchatv iti | sa pitrāhūyoktaḥ | putra na tvayā sārthasya purastād gantavyaṃ nāpi pṛṣṭhataḥ | yadi balavāṃś ca cauro bhavati sārthasya purastān nipatati durbalo bhavati pṛṣṭhato nipatati | tvayā sārthasya madhye gantavyaṃ na cet hate sārthavāhe hataḥ sārtho bhavet | dāsakapālakāv api abhihitau | putrau yuvābhyāṃ na kenacit prakāreṇa śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇo moktavya iti | athāpareṇa samayena śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇaḥ kṛtakautu­kamaṅ­galas­vastyayano mātuḥ sakāśam upasaṃkramya pādayor nipatya kathayati | amba gacchāmi avalokitā bhava mahāsamudram avatarāmi | sā ruditum ārabdhā | sa kathayati | amba kasmād rodiṣi | mātā sāśrudurdinavadanā kathayati | putra kadācid ahaṃ putrakaṃ punar api jīvantaṃ drakṣyāmi iti | sa saṃlakṣayati | ahaṃ maṅgalaiḥ saṃprasthitaḥ | iyam īdṛśam amaṅgalam abhidhatte | sa ruṣitaḥ kathayati | amba ahaṃ kṛtakautu­kamaṅ­galas­vastyayano mahāsamudraṃ saṃprasthitaḥ | tvaṃ cedṛśāny amaṅgalāni karoṣi | apāyān kiṃ na paśyasīti | sā kathayati | putra kharaṃ te vākkarma niścāritam |atyayam atyayato deśaya | apy evaitat karma tanutvaṃ parikṣayaṃ paryādānaṃ gacchet | sā tenātyayam atyayataḥ kṣamāpitā | atha śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇaḥ kṛtakautu­kamaṅ­galas­vastyayanaḥ śakaṭair bhārair moṭaiḥ piṭakair uṣṭrair gobhir gardabhaiḥ prabhūtaṃ samudragamanīyaṃ paṇyam āropya mahāsamudraṃ saṃprasthitaḥ |

so 'nupūrveṇa grāmana­gara­nigamapallīpattaneṣu cañcūryamāṇo mahāsamudrataṭam anuprāptaḥ MS: samudratīrasamanuprāptaḥ | nipuṇataḥ sāmudraṃ yānapātraṃ pratipadya mahāsamudram avatīrṇo dhanahārakaḥ so 'nuguṇena vāyunā ratnadvīpam anuprāptaḥ | tena tatropaparīkṣyopaparīkṣya ratnānāṃ tad vahanaṃ pūritaṃ tadyathā tilataṇḍulakolakulatthānām | so 'nuguṇena vāyunā saṃsiddhayānapātro jambudvīpam anuprāptaḥ | sa sārthas tasminn eva samudratīre āvāsitaḥ | asau śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇo 'pi sārthavāho dāsakapālakāv ādāya sārthamadhyād ekānte 'pakramya āyaṃ vyayaṃ ca tulayitum ārabdhaḥ | paścāt tenāsau dāsako 'bhihitaḥ | dāsaka paśya sārthaḥ kiṃ karotīti | sa gataḥ | yāvat paśyati sārdhaṃ suptam | so 'pi tatraiva suptaḥ | dāsakaś cirāyatīti kṛtvā pālako 'bhihitaḥ | pālaka paśya sārthaḥ kiṃ karotīti | sa gataḥ | yāvat paśyati sthorāṃ lardayantaṃ sārtham | so 'pi sthorāṃ lardayitum ārabdhaḥ | dāsaka saṃlakṣayati | pālakaḥ sārthavāhaṃ śabdāpayiṣyati | pālako 'pi saṃ­lakṣayati | dāsakaḥ sārthavāhaṃ śabdāpayiṣyatīti | sa sārthaḥ sarātrim eva sthorāṃ lardayitvā saṃprasthitaḥ | so 'pi gāḍhanidrāvaṣṭabdhaḥ śayitaḥ | sa sārthas tāvad gato yāvat prabhātam | te kathayanti | bhavantaḥ kva sārthavāhaḥ | purastād gacchati | purastād gatvā pṛcchanti kva sārthavāhaḥ | pṛṣṭhata āgacchati | pṛṣṭhato gatvā pṛcchanti kva sārthavāhaḥ | madhye gacchati | madhye gatvā pṛcchanti | yāvat tatrāpi nāsti | dāsakaḥ kathayati | mama buddhir utpannā pālakaḥ sārthavāhaṃ śabdāpayiṣyati | pālako 'pi kathayati | mama buddhir utpannā dāsakaḥ sārthavāhaṃ śabdāpayiṣyatīti | bhavanto na śobhanaṃ kṛtaṃ yad asmābhiḥ sārthavāhaś choritaḥ | āgacchata nivartāmaḥ | te kathayanti | bhavanto yadi vayaṃ nivartiṣyāmaḥ sarva evānayena vyasanam āpatsyāmaḥ | āgacchata kriyākāraṃ tāvat kurmaḥ | tāvan na kenacic chroṇasya koṭīkarṇasya mātāpitṛbhyām ārocayitavyaṃ yāvad bhāṇḍaṃ na pratiśāmitaṃ bhavatīti | te kriyākāraṃ kṛtvā gatāḥ | śroṇasya koṭīkarṇasya mātāpitṛbhyāṃ śrutaṃ śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇo 'bhyāgata iti | tau pratyudgatau | kva sārthavāhaḥ | madhye āgacchati | madhye gatvā pṛcchataḥ kva sārthavāha iti | te kathayanti | pṛṣṭhata āgacchati | pṛṣṭhato gatvā pṛcchataḥ | kva sārthavāhaḥ | purastād gacchatīti | tais tāvad ākulīkṛtau yāvad bhāṇḍaṃ pratiśāmitam | gataḥ paścāt te kathayanti | amba vismṛto 'smābhiḥ sārthavāha iti | tābhyām eka āgatya kathayati | ayaṃ śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇo 'bhyāgata iti | tasya tāv abhisāraṃ datvā pratyudgatau na paśyataḥ | apara āgatya kathayati | ayaṃ śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇo 'bhyāgata iti | tasya tāv abhisāraṃ datvā pratyudgatau na paśyataḥ | tau yāvan na kasyacit punar api śraddadhātum ārabdhau | tābhyām udyāneṣu devakuleṣu chatrāṇi ghaṇṭāvyajanāni akṣarāṇi likhitāni yadi tāvac chroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇo jīvati laghv āgamanāya | atha cyutaḥ kālagato gatyupapattisthānāt sthānāntaraviśeṣatāyai | tau śokena rudantāv andhībhūtau | so 'pi sūryasyābhyudgamanakālasamaye sūryāṃśubhir ābhānvitaḥ pratibuddho yāvat sārthaṃ na paśyati | nānyatra tāv eva gardabhāvatiṣṭhataḥ | sa tau yojayitvā saṃprasthitaḥ | vālukāsthale vāyunā mārgaḥ pihitaḥ | smṛtimanto gardabhā jighritvā saṃprasthitaḥ śanair gacchantīti pratodayaṣṭyā spṛṣṭhāḥ śālāṭavīṃ praviṣṭāḥ | te tṛṣārtā vihvalavadanā jihvāṃ nirnāmayya gacchanti | tān dṛṣṭvā tasya kāruṇyam utpannam | sa saṃlakṣayati | yady etān notsrakṣyāmi ebhir eva sārdham anayena vyasanam āpatsye |

sa tān utsṛjya padbhyāṃ saṃprasthitaḥ | yāvat paśyati āyasaṃ nagaram uccaṃ ca pragṛhītaṃ ca | tatra dvāre puruṣas tiṣṭhati kālo raudraś caṇḍo lohitākṣa udbaddhapiṇḍo lohalaguḍavyagrahastaḥ MS: tatra kālo caṇḍo lohitākṣaḥ udbandhapiṇḍakāyaṣṭi vigraho puruṣo dvāre tiṣṭhati | sa tasya sakāśam upasaṃkrāntaḥ | bhoḥ puruṣa | asty atra pānīyam | sa tūṣṇīm avasthitaḥ | bhūyas tena pṛṣṭo 'sau puruṣo 'sty atra pānīyam iti | bhūyo 'pi sa tūṣṇīm avasthitaḥ | tena sārthavāhena tatra praviśya pānīyaṃ pānīyam iti śabdo niścāritaḥ | yāvat pañcamātraiḥ pretasahasrair dagdhasthūṇāsadṛśair asthiyantravad ucchritaiḥ svakeśaromapracchannaiḥ parvatasannibhodaraiḥ sūcīcchidropamamukhair anuparivāritaḥ śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇaḥ | te kathayanti | sārthavāha kāruṇikas tvam asmākaṃ tṛṣārtānāṃ pānīyam anuprayaccha | sa kathayati | bhavanto 'ham api pānīyam eva mṛgayāmi kuto 'haṃ yuṣmākaṃ pānīyam anuprayacchāmīti | te kathayanti | sārthavāha pretanagaram idaṃ kutaḥ khalv atra pānīyam | adyāsmābhir dvādaśabhir varṣais tvatsakāśāt pānīyaṃ pānīyam iti śabdaḥ śrutaḥ | sa kathayati | ke yūyaṃ bhavantaḥ kena vā karmaṇā ihopapannāḥ | ta ūcuḥ | śroṇa duṣkuhakā jambudvīpakā manuṣyā nābhiśraddadhāsyanti | sa cāha | ahaṃ bhavantaḥ pratyakṣadarśī kasmān nābhiśraddadhāsye MS: kathaṃ na śraddhāsye | te gāthāṃ bhāṣante |

ākrośakā roṣakā vayaṃ matsariṇaḥ kuṭukuñcakā vayam |
dānañ ca dattam aṇv api tena vayaṃ pretalokam āgatāḥ ||

śroṇa gaccha puṇyamaheśākhyas tvam MS: puṇyakāmāṃ tvam | asti kaścit tvayā dṛṣṭaḥ pretanagaraṃ praviṣṭaḥ svastikṣemābhyāṃ jīvan nirgacchan MS: nagaraṃ praviśya jīvan gacchati | sa saṃprasthitaḥ | yāvat tenāsau puruṣo dṛṣṭaḥ | sa tenoktaḥ | bhadramukha aho bata tvayā mamārocitaṃ syād yathedaṃ pretanagaram iti nāham atra praviṣṭaḥ syām | sa tenoktaḥ | śroṇa gaccha puṇyamaheśākhyas tvam | yena tvaṃ pretanagaraṃ praviśya svastikṣemābhyāṃ nirgataḥ |

sa saṃprasthito yāvad aparaṃ paśyaty āyasaṃ nagaram uccaṃ ca pragṛhītaṃ ca | tatrāpi dvāre puruṣas tiṣṭhati kālaś caṇḍo lohitākṣa udbaddhapiṇḍo lohalaguḍavyagrahastaḥ | sa tasya sakāśam upasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramyaivam āha | bhoḥ puruṣa asty atra nagare pānīyam | sa tūṣṇīm avasthitaḥ | bhūyas tena pṛṣṭaḥ | bhoḥ puruṣa asty atra nagare pānīyam | sa tūṣṇīm avasthitaḥ | tena tatra praviśya pānīyaṃ pānīyam iti śabdaḥ kṛtaḥ | anekaiḥ pretasahasrair dagdhasthūṇākṛtibhir asthiyantravad ucchritaiḥ svakeśaromapraticchannaiḥ parvatasannibhodaraiḥ sūcīcchidropamamukhair anuparivāritaḥ | te kathayanti | śroṇa kāruṇikas tvam asmākaṃ tṛṣārtānāṃ pānīyam anuprayaccha | sa kathayati | aham api bhavantaḥ pānīyam eva mṛgayāmi kuto 'haṃ yuṣmākaṃ pānīyaṃ dadāmīti | te kathayanti | śroṇa pretanagaram idaṃ kuto 'tra pānīyam | adyāsmābhir dvādaśabhir varṣais tvatsakāśāt pānīyaṃ pānīyam iti śabdaḥ śrutaḥ | sa cāha | ke yūyaṃ bhavantaḥ kena vā karmaṇā ihopapannāḥ | ta ūcuḥ | śroṇa duṣkuhakā jambudvīpakā manuṣyā nābhiśraddadhāsyanti | sa cāha | ahaṃ bhavantaḥ pratyakṣadarśī kasmān nābhiśraddadhāsye | te gāthāṃ bhāṣante |

ārogyamadena mattakā yauvanabhogamadena mattakāḥ |
dānaṃ ca na dattam aṇv api yena vayaṃ pretalokam āgatāḥ ||

śroṇa gaccha puṇyakarmā tvam | asti kaścit tvayā dṛṣṭaḥ śrutaḥ pretanagaraṃ praviśya svastikṣemābhyāṃ jīvan nirgacchan | sa saṃprasthitaḥ | yāvat tenāsau puruṣo dṛṣṭaḥ | sa tenoktaḥ | bhadramukha aho bata yadi tvayā mamārocitaṃ syād yathedaṃ pretanagaram iti naivāham atra praviṣṭaḥ syām | sa kathayati | śroṇa gaccha puṇyamaheśākhyas tvam | asti kaścit tvayā dṛṣṭaḥ śruto vā pretanagaraṃ praviśya svastikṣemābhyāṃ jīvan nirgacchan |

sa saṃprasthitaḥ | yāvat paśyati sūryasyāstaṃgamanakāle vimānaṃ catasro 'psarasaḥ abhirūpāḥ prāsādikā darśanīyāḥ | ekaś ca puruṣo 'bhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādikaḥ aṅgadakuṇḍalavicitramālyābharaṇānule­panas tābhiḥ sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | sa tair dūrata eva dṛṣṭaḥ | te taṃ pratyavabhāṣitum ārabdhāḥ | svāgataṃ śroṇa māsi tṛṣito bubhukṣito vā | sa saṃlakṣayati | nūnaṃ devo 'yaṃ vā nāgo vā yakṣo vā bhaviṣyati | āha ca | ārya tṛṣito 'smi bubhukṣito 'smi | sa taiḥ snāpito bhojitaḥ | sa tasmin vimāne tāvat sthito yāvat sūryasyābhyudgamanakālasamayaḥ | sa tair uktaḥ | śroṇa avatara ādīnavo 'tra bhaviṣyati | so 'vatīrya ekānte prakramyāvasthitaḥ | tataḥ paścāt sūryasyābhyudgamanakālasamaye tad vimānam antarhitam | tā apy apsaraso 'ntarhitāś catvāraḥ śyāmaśavalāḥ kukkurāḥ prādurbhūtāḥ | tais taṃ puruṣam avamūrdhakaṃ pātayitvā tāvat pṛṣṭhavaṃśāny utpāṭyotpāṭya bhakṣitāni yāvat sūryasyāstaṃ­gamanakālasamayaḥ | tataḥ paścāt punar api tad vimānaṃ prādurbhūtaṃ tā āpsarasaḥ prādurbhūtāḥ | sa ca puruṣo 'bhirūpo darśanīyaprāsādiko 'ṅgadakuṇḍalavicitramālyābharaṇānule­panas tābhiḥ sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | sa teṣāṃ sakāśam upasaṃkramya kathayati | ke yūyaṃ kena ca karmaṇā ihopapannāḥ | te procuḥ | śroṇa duṣkuhakā jambudvīpakā manuṣyā nābhiśraddadhāsyanti | sa cāha | ahaṃ pratyakṣadarśī kathaṃ nābhiśraddadhāsye | śroṇa ahaṃ vāsavagrāmake aurabhrikaḥ āsīt | urabhrān praghātya praghātya māṃsaṃ vikrīya vikrīya jīvikāṃ kalpayāmi | āryaś ca mahākātyāyano mamānukampayā āgatya kathayati | bhadramukha aniṣṭo 'sya karmaṇaḥ phalavipākaḥ | virama tvam asmāt pāpakād asaddharmāt | nāhaṃ tasya vacanena viramāmi | bhūyo bhūyaḥ sa māṃ vicchandayati | bhadramukāniṣṭo 'sya karmaṇaḥ phalavipākaḥ | virama tvam asmāt pāpakād asaddharmāt | tatrāpy ahaṃ na prativiramāmi | sa māṃ pṛcchati | bhadramukha kiṃ tvam etān urabhrān divā praghātayasyāhosvid rātrau | mayoktaḥ | ārya divā praghātayāmīti | sa kathayati | bhadramukha rātrau śīlasamādānaṃ kiṃ na gṛhṇāsi | mayā tasyāntikād rātrau śīlasamādānaṃ gṛhītam | yat tad rātrau śīlasamādānaṃ gṛhītaṃ tasya karmaṇo vipākena rātrāv evaṃvidhaṃ divyaṃ sukhaṃ pratyanubhavāmi | yan maya divā urabhrāḥ praghātitās tasya karmaṇo vipākena divā evaṃvidhaṃ duḥkhaṃ pratyanubhavāmi | gāthāṃ ca bhāṣate |

sa saṃprasthitaḥ | yāvat paśyati aparaṃ vimānam | tatraikā strī abhirūpā darśanīyā prāsādikā aṅgadakuṇḍalavicitramālyābharaṇānulepanā | tasyāś caturṣu paryaṅkapādakeṣu catvāraḥ pretā baddhās tiṣṭhanti | sā taṃ dūrata eva dṛṣṭvā pratyanubhāṣitum ārabdhā | śroṇa svāgataṃ mā tṛṣito 'si mā bubhukṣito 'si vā | sa saṃlakṣayati | nūnaṃ devīyaṃ vā nāgī vā yakṣī vā bhaviṣyati | sa kathayati | ārye tṛṣito 'smi bubhukṣito 'smi | tayāsau snāpitaḥ bhojitaḥ uktaś ca | śroṇa yady ete kiñcin mṛgayanti mā dāsyasīty uktvā teṣāṃ satvānāṃ karma svakṛtaṃ pratyakṣīkartukāmā vimānaṃ praviśyāvasthitā | te mṛgayitum ārabdhāḥ | śroṇa kāruṇikas tvaṃ bubhukṣitā vayam asmākam anuprayaccha | tenaikasya kṣiptaṃ busaplāvī prādurbhūtā | aparasya kṣiptam ayoguḍaṃ bhakṣayitum ārabdhaḥ | aparasya kṣiptaṃ svamāṃsaṃ bhakṣayitum ārabdhaḥ | aparasya kṣiptaṃ pūyaśoṇitaṃ prādurbhūtam | sa paśyati visragandhena nirgatam | śroṇa nivāritas tvaṃ mayā kasmāt tvayaiṣāṃ dattam | kiṃ mama karuṇayā tvam eva kāruṇikataraḥ | sa kathayati | bhagini tavaite ke bhavanti | sā kathayati | ayaṃ me svāmī | ayaṃ me putraḥ | iyaṃ me snuṣā | iyaṃ me dāsī | sa āha | ke yūyaṃ kena vā karmaṇā ihopapannāḥ | tayoktam | śroṇa duṣkuhakā jambudvīpakā manuṣyā nābhiśraddadhāsyanti | ahaṃ bhagini pratyakṣadarśī kasmān nābhiśraddadhāsye | sā kathayati | ahaṃ vāsavagrāmake brāhmaṇy āsīt | mayā nakṣatrarātrau pratyupasthitāyāṃ praṇītam āhāraṃ sajjīkṛtam | āryaś ca mahā­kātyāyano mamānukampayā vāsavagrāmakaṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣat | sa mayā dṛṣṭaḥ kāyaprāsādikaś cittaprāsādikaḥ | cittam abhiprasannaṃ dṛṣṭvā sa mayā prāsādajātayā piṇḍakena pratipāditaḥ | tasyā mama buddhir utpannā svāminam anumodayāmi prāmodyam utpādayiṣyatīti | sa snātvā āgato mayoktaḥ | āryaputrānumodasva mayāryo mahākātyāyanaḥ piṇḍakena pratipāditaḥ | sa ruṣito yāvad brāhmaṇānāṃ na dīyate jñātīnāṃ vā jñātipūjā na kriyate tāvat tvayā tasmai muṇḍakāya śramaṇakāyāgrapiṇḍakaṃ dattam | so 'marṣajātaḥ kathayati | kasmāt sa muṇḍakaḥ śramaṇako busaplāvīṃ na bhakṣayatīti | tasya karmaṇo vipākenāyaṃ busaplāvīṃ bhakṣayati | mama buddhir utpannā putraṃ tāvad anumodayāmi | prāmodyam utpādayiṣyatīti | so 'pi mayoktaḥ | putrānumodasva mayāryo mahākātyāyanaḥ piṇḍakena pratipāditaḥ | so 'pi ruṣito yāvad brāhmaṇānāṃ na dīyate jñātīnāṃ vā jñātipūjā na kriyate tāvat tvayā tasmai muṇḍakāya śramaṇakāyāgrapiṇḍakaṃ dattam | so 'py amarṣajātaḥ kathayati | kasmāt sa muṇḍakaḥ śramaṇako 'yoguḍaṃ na bhakṣayatīti | tasya karmaṇo vipākenāyam ayoguḍaṃ bhakṣayati | nakṣatrarātryāṃ pratyupasthitāyāṃ jñātayaḥ praheṇakāni mama preṣayanti | tāny ahaṃ snuṣāyāḥ samarpayāmi | sā praṇītāni praheṇakāni bhakṣayitvā mama lūhāni upanāmayati | ahaṃ teṣāṃ jñātīnāṃ sandiśāmi | kiṃ nu yūyaṃ durbhikṣe yathā lūhāni praheṇakāni preṣayatheti | te mama sandiśanti | na vayaṃ lūhāni preṣayāmaḥ api tu praṇītāny eva praheṇakāni preṣayāmaḥ | mayā snuṣābhihitā | vadhūke mā tvaṃ praṇītāni praheṇakāni bhakṣayitvāsmākaṃ lūhāny upanāmayasi | sā kathayati | kiṃ na svamāṃsāni bhakṣayati yāhaṃ tvadīyāni praheṇakāni bhakṣayāmīti | iyaṃ tasya karmaṇo vipākena svamāṃsāni bhakṣayati | nakṣatrarātryāṃ pratyupasthitāyām ahaṃ dārikāyā haste praṇītāni praheṇakāni datvā jñātīnāṃ preṣayāmi | sā dārikā tāni praṇītāni praheṇakāni mārge 'ntarbhakṣayitvā teṣāṃ lūhāny upanāmayati | te mama sandiśanti | kiṃ nu tvaṃ durbhikṣe yathā lūhāny asmākaṃ praheṇakāni preṣayasīti | ahaṃ teṣāṃ sandiśāmi | nāhaṃ lūhāni praheṇakāni preṣayāmi api tu praṇītāny evāhaṃ preṣayāmīti | mayā dārikābhihitā | dārike mā tvaṃ praṇītāni praheṇakāni bhakṣayitvā teṣāṃ lūhāny upanāmayasi | sā kathayati | kiṃ nu pūyaśoṇitaṃ na bhakṣayati yā tvadīyāni praheṇakāni bhakṣayatīti | tasya karmaṇo vipākeneyaṃ pūyaśoṇitaṃ bhakṣayati | mama buddhir utpannā | tatra pratisandhiṃ gṛhṇāmi yatraitān satvān svakaṃ svakaṃ karmaphalaṃ paribhuñjānān paśyāmīti | yan mayāryamahākātyāyanaṃ piṇḍakena pratipādya praṇīte trayastriṃ­śe devanikāye upapattavyaṃ sāhaṃ mithyāpraṇidhānaṃ kṛtvā pretamaharddhikā saṃvṛttā |

evaṃ tasya paribhramato dvādaśa varṣā atikrāntāḥ | tayoktaḥ | śroṇa gamiṣyasi tvaṃ vāsavagrāmakam | bhagini gamiṣyāmi | sa tasminn eva vimāne adhirūḍhaḥ | tayā teṣām eva pretānām ājñā dattā bhavanto gacchata śroṇaṃ koṭīkarṇaṃ suptam eva vāsavagrāmake paitrike udyāne sthāpayitvā āgacchata | sa tair vāsavagrāmake paitrike udyāne sthāpitaḥ | sa prativibuddho yāvat paśyati ghaṇṭācchatrāṇi vyajanāny akṣarāṇi likhitāni | yadi tāvac chroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇo jīvati laghv āgamanāya kṣipram āgamanāya cyutaḥ kālagato gatyupapattisthānāt sthānāntaraviśeṣatāyai | sa saṃlakṣayati | yady ahaṃ mātāpitṛbhyāṃ mṛta eva gṛhītaḥ kasmād bhūyo 'haṃ gṛhaṃ praviśāmi gacchāmy āryamahākātyāyanasyāntike pravrajāmīti | atha śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇo yenāyuṣmān mahākātyāyanas tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | adrākṣīd āyuṣmān mahākātyāyanaḥ śroṇaṃ koṭīkarṇam | dūrād eva dṛṣṭvā ca punaḥ śroṇaṃ koṭīkarṇam idam avocat | ehi śroṇa svāgataṃ te dṛṣṭas te śroṇa ayaṃ lokaḥ paraś ca lokaḥ | sa kathayati | dṛṣṭo bhadanta mahākātyāyana labheyāhaṃ bhadanta mahākātyāyana svākhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajyām upasaṃpadaṃ bhikṣubhāvaṃ careyam ahaṃ bhagavato 'ntike brahmacaryam | sa āryeṇoktaḥ | śroṇa tāṃ tāvat pūrvikāṃ pratijñāṃ paripūraya yathāgṛhītān sandeśān samarpayeti |

śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇaḥ saṃlakṣayati | sarvo 'yaṃ lokaḥ suvarṇasya śraddadhāti na tu kaścin mama śraddhayā gacchatīti | tena vaipuṣpitam | tasya śiśutve suvarṇena daśanā baddhāḥ | tayāsau pratyabhijñātaḥ | syād āryaḥ śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇaḥ eva me bhagini saṃjānīte | tayā gatvā tasya mātāpitṛbhyām ārocitam | amba tāta koṭīkarṇo 'bhyāgata iti | anekais teṣām ārocitam | te na kasyacit śraddhayā gacchanti | te kathayanti | putri tvam apy asmākam utprāsayasi | yāvad asau svayam eva gataḥ | tena dvārakoṣṭhake sthitvotkāśanaśabdaḥ kṛtaḥ | hiraṇyasvaro 'sau | sa taiḥ svareṇa pratyabhijñātaḥ | tau kaṇṭhe pariṣvajya ruditum ārabdhau | teṣāṃ vāṣpeṇa paṭahāni sphuṭitāni | draṣṭum ārabdhau | sa kathayati | amba tātānujānīdhvaṃ pravrajiṣyāmi samag eva śraddhayā agārād anāgārikam | tau kathayataḥ | putrāvāṃ tvadīyena śokena rudantāv andhībhūtau | idānīṃ tvam evāgamya cakṣuḥ pratilabdham | yāvad āvāṃ jīvāvas tāvan na pravrajitavyam | yadā kālaṃ kariṣyāvas tadā pravrajiṣyasi | tenāyuṣmanto mahākātyāyanasyāntikād dharmaṃ śrutvā srotaāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtaṃ mātāpitarau ca śaraṇāgamanaśikṣāpadeṣu pratiṣṭhāpitau | āgamacatuṣṭayam adhītam | sakṛdāgāmiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam | mātāpitarau satyeṣu pratiṣṭhāpitau | apareṇa samayena tasya mātāpitarau kālagatau | sa taṃ dhanajātaṃ dīnānā­thakṛpaṇavanīpakebhyo datvā daridrān adaridrān kṛtvā yenāyuṣmān mahākātyāyanas tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramyāyuṣmato mahākātyayanasya pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte 'sthāt | ekānte sthitaḥ śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇaḥ āyuṣmantaṃ mahākātyāyanam idam avocat | labeyāham ārya mahākātyāyana svākhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajyām upasaṃpadaṃ bhikṣubhāvam | yāvac careyam ahaṃ bhagavato 'ntike brahmacaryam | sa āyuṣmatā mahākātyāyanena pravrājitaḥ | tena pravrajya mātṛkādhītā | anāgāmiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam |

aśmāparāntakeṣu janapadeṣu alpabhikṣukaṃ kṛcchreṇa daśavargo gaṇaḥ paripūrayate | sa traimāsīṃ śrāmaṇero vidhāritaḥ | dharmatā khalu yathā buddhānāṃ bhagavatāṃ śrāvakāṇāṃ dvau saṃnipātau bhavataḥ | yaś cāṣāḍhyāṃ varṣopanāyikāyāṃ yaś ca kārtikyāṃ paurṇamāsyām | tatra ye āṣāḍhyāṃ varṣopanāyikāyāṃ saṃnipatanti te tāṃs tān uddeśayogamanasikārān udgṛhya paryavāpya tāsu tāsu grāmana­gara­nigamarāṣṭra­rāja­dhānīṣu varṣām upagacchanti | ye kārtikyāṃ paurṇamāsyāṃ saṃnipatanti te yathādhigatam ārocayanti | uttare ca paripṛcchanti | evam eva mahāśrāvakāṇām api | atha ye āyuṣmato mahākātyāyanasya sārdhaṃvihāryantevāsikā bhikṣavas tāṃs tān uddeśayogamanasikāraviśeṣān udgṛhya paryavāpya tāsu tāsu grāmana­gara­nigamarāṣṭra­rāja­dhānīṣu varṣām upagatās te trayāṇāṃ vārṣikāṇāṃ māsānām atyayāt kṛtacīvarā niṣṭhitacīvarāḥ samādāya pātracīvaraṃ yenāyuṣmān mahākātyāyanas tenopasaṃkrāntāḥ | upasaṃkramyāyuṣmato mahākātyāyanasya pādau śirasā vanditvaikānte niṣaṇṇāḥ | ekānte niṣadya yathādhigatam ārocayanti uttare ca paripṛcchanti | daśavargo gaṇaḥ paripūrṇaḥ | sa tenopasaṃpāditaḥ | tena piṭakatrayam adhītam | sarvakleśaprahāṇād arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam | arhan saṃvṛttas traidhātukavītarāgo samaloṣṭrakāṃcanaḥ ākāśapāṇitalasamacitto vāsīcandanakalpo 'vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośo vidyābhijñāprati­saṃ­vitprāpto bhavalābhalobhasat­kāraparāṅmukhaḥ sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ pūjyo mānyo 'bhivādyaś ca saṃvṛttaḥ |

athāyuṣmato mahākātyāyanasya sārdhaṃvihāryantevāsikā āyuṣmantaṃ mahākātyāyanaṃ yāvat tāvat paryupāsyāyuṣmantaṃ mahākātyāyanam idam avocan | dṛṣṭo 'smābhir upādhyāya paryupāsitaś ca | gacchāmo vayaṃ bhagavantaṃ paryupāsiṣyāmahe | vatsa evaṃ kurudhvam | paryupāsitavyā eva hi tathāgatā arhantaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhāḥ |

tena khalu punaḥ samayena śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇas tasyām eva parṣadi saṃniṣaṇṇo 'bhūt saṃnipatitaḥ | athāyuṣmān śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇa utthāyāsanād ekāṃsam uttarāsaṃgāṃ kṛtvā dakṣiṇaṃ jānumaṇḍalaṃ pṛthivyāṃ pratiṣṭhāpya yenāyuṣmān mahākātyāyanas tenāñjaliṃ kṛtvā praṇamyāyuṣmantaṃ mahākātyāyanam idam avocat | dṛṣṭo mayopādhyāyānubhāvena sa bhagavān dharmakāyena no tu rūpakāyena | gacchāmy upādhyāya rūpakāyenāpi taṃ bhagavantaṃ drakṣyāmi | sa āha | evaṃ vatsa kuruṣva | durlabhadarśanā hi vatsa tathāgatā arhantaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhāḥ tadyathā audumbarapuṣpam | asmākaṃ ca vacanena bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vandasvālpābādhatāṃ ca yāvat sukhasparśavihāratāṃ ca pañca praśnāni ca pṛccha |

aśmāparāntakeṣu bhadanta janapadeṣu alpabhikṣukaṃ kṛcchreṇa daśavargagaṇaḥ paripūryate | tatrāsmābhiḥ kathaṃ pratipattavyam | kharā bhūmir gokaṇṭakādhānā | aśmāparāntakeṣu janapadeṣu idam evaṃrūpam āstaraṇaṃ pratyāstaraṇaṃ tadyathā ajacarma gocarma mṛgacarma cchāgacarma | tad anyeṣu janapadeṣv idam evaṃrūpam āstaraṇaṃ pratyāstaraṇaṃ tadyathā erako merako jandurako mandurakaḥ | evam evāśmāparāntakeṣu janapadeṣv idam evaṃrūpam āstaraṇaṃ pratyāstaraṇaṃ tad­yathā ajacarma pūrvavat | udakaśuddhikā manuṣyā snānasamudācārāḥ | bhikṣur bhikṣoś cīvarakāṇi preṣayati | itaś cyutāni tatrāsaṃprāptāni | kasyaitāni naisargikāṇi | adhivāsayaty āyuṣmān śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇa āyuṣmato mahākātyāyanasya tūṣṇīṃbhāvena |

athāyuṣmān śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇas tasyā eva rātrer atyāyāt pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaram ādāya vāsavagrāmakaṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣat | yāvad anupūrveṇa śrāvastīm anupṛaptaḥ | athāyuṣmān śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇaḥ pātracīvaraṃ pratiśāmayya pādau prakṣālya yena bhagavāṃs tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya vanditvaikānte niṣaṇṇaḥ | tatra bhagavān āyuṣmantam ānandam āmantrayate sma | gacchānanda tathāgatasya śroṇasya ca koṭīkarṇasyaikavihāre mañcaṃ prajñapaya | evaṃ bhadantety āyuṣmān ānandas tathāgatasya śroṇasya ca koṭīkarṇasya yāvat prajñapya yena bhagavāṃs tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya bhagavantam idam avocat | prajñapto bhadanta tathāgatasya śroṇasya ca koṭīkarṇasyaikavihāre mañco yasyedānīṃ bhagavān kālaṃ manyate | atha bhagavān yena śroṇasya koṭīkarṇasya vihāras tenopasaṃkrānto yāvad vihāraṃ praviśya niṣaṇṇaḥ | yāvat pratimukhaṃ smṛtim upasthāpya | athāyuṣmān api śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇo bahir vihārasya pādau prakṣālya vihāraṃ praviśya niṣaṇṇaḥ paryaṅkam ābhujya yāvad ṛjukāyaṃ praṇidhāya pratimukhaṃ smṛtim upasthāpya | tāṃ khalu rātriṃ bhagavān āyuṣmāṃś ca śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇa āryasya tūṣṇīṃbhāvenātināmitavān | atha bhagavān rātryāḥ pratyūṣasamaye āyuṣmantaṃ śroṇaṃ koṭīkarṇam āmantrayate sma | pratibhātu te śroṇa dharmo yo mayā svayam abhijñāyābhi­saṃ­budhyākhyātaḥ | athāyuṣmān śroṇo bhagavatā kṛtāvakāśaḥ aśmāparāntikayā svaraguptikayā udānāt pārāyaṇāt satyadṛṣṭaḥ śailagāthāmunigāthāsthaviragāthāsthavirīgāthārthavargīyāṇī ca sūtrāṇi vistareṇa svareṇa svādhyāyaṃ karoti | atha bhagavān śroṇasya koṭīkarṇasya kathāparyavasānaṃ viditvā āyuṣmantaṃ śroṇaṃ koṭīkarṇam idam avocat | sādhu sādhu śroṇa madhuras te dharmo bhāṣitaḥ praṇītaś ca yo mayā svayam abhijñāyābhi­saṃ­budhyākhyātaḥ |

athāyuṣmataḥ śroṇasya koṭīkarṇasyaitad abhavat | ayaṃ me kālo bhagavata upādhyāyasya vacasārādhayitum iti viditvotthāyāsanād yāvad bhagavantaṃ praṇamyedam avocat | aśmāparāntakeṣu janapadeṣu vāsavagrāmake bhadanta mahākātyāyanaḥ prativasati yo me upādhyāyaḥ | sa bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vandate 'lpābādhatāṃ laghūtthānatāṃ ca pṛcchati yāvat sparśavihāratāṃ ca pañca ca praśnāni pṛcchati | vistareṇoccārayitavyāni |

atha bhagavān śroṇaṃ koṭīkarṇam idam avocat | akālas te śroṇa praśnavyākaraṇāya | saṃghamadhye praśnaḥ pṛcchyeta | tatra kālo bhaviṣyati praśnasya vyākaraṇāya | atha bhagavān kālyam evotthāya purastād bhikṣusaṃghasya prajñapta evāsane niṣaṇṇaḥ | athāyuṣmān śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇo yena bahagvāṃs tenopasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvaikānte 'sthāt | ekāntasthito bhagavantam idam avocat | aśmāparāntakeṣu janapadeṣu vāsavagrāmake bhadanta mahākātyāyanaḥ prativasati yo me upādhyāyaḥ | sa bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vandate 'lpābādhatāṃ pṛcchati yāvat sparśavihāratāṃ ca pañca ca praśnāni vistareṇārocayati yathā pūrvam uktāni yāvat kasya naisargikāṇi | bhagavān āha | tasmād anujānāmi | pratyantimeṣu janapadeṣu vinayadharapañcamena gaṇenopasaṃpadā | sadā snānam | ekapalāśike upānahe dhārayitavye na dvipuṭe na tripuṭe | sā cet kṣayadharmiṇī bhavati argalakaṃ datvā dhārayitavye MS: sacet kṣiyadharmiṇyau bhavataḥ | arghaṭakaṃ vārayitavye carmā dhārayitavyām | bhikṣur bhikṣoś cīvarakāṇi preṣayati itaś cyutāni tatrāsaṃprāptāni na kasyacin naisargikāṇi |

āyuṣmān upālī buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ pṛcchati | yad uktaṃ bhadanta bhagavatā pratyantimeṣu janapadeṣu vinayadharapañcamena gaṇenopasaṃpadā | tatra katamo 'ntaḥ katamaḥ pratyantaḥ | pūrveṇopālin puṇḍravardhanaṃ nāma nagaraṃ tasya pūrveṇa puṇḍrakakṣo nāma dāvaḥ | so 'ntaḥ | tataḥ pareṇa pratyantaḥ | dakṣiṇena śarāvatī nāma nagarī MS: pratyanta nagarāvatī nāma nagarī tasya pareṇa śarāvatī | tasyāḥ pareṇa śarāvatī nāma nadī | so 'ntaḥ | tataḥ pareṇa pratyantaḥ | paścimena sthūṇopasthūṇakau brāhmaṇagrāmakau | so 'ntaḥ | tataḥ pareṇa pratyantaḥ | uttareṇa uśīragiriḥ | so 'ntaḥ | tataḥ pareṇa pratyantaḥ |

bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ pṛcchanti | kiṃ bhadanta āyuṣmatā śroṇena koṭīkarṇena karma kṛtaṃ tasya karmaṇo vipākenāḍhye mahādhane mahābhoge kule jāto ratnapratyuptikayā karṇe āmuktikayā bhagavataḥ śāsane pravrajya sarvakleśaprahāṇād arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam |

bhagavān āha | bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo vārāṇasyāṃ nagaryāṃ kāśyapo nāma tathāgato 'rhan samyaksaṃbuddho bhagavāñ chāstā loka utpannaḥ | tena khalu samayena vārāṇasyāṃ dvau jāyāpatikau | tābhyāṃ kāśyapasya samyaksaṃbuddhasyāntike śaraṇagamanaśikṣāpadāny udgṛhītāni | yadā kāśyapaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhaḥ sakalaṃ buddhakāryaṃ kṛtvā nirupadhiśeṣe nirvāṇadhātau parinirvṛtas tasya rājñā kṛkiṇā catūratnamayaṃ caityaṃ kāritaṃ samantād yojanam ardhayojanam uccatvena | tena tatra khaṇḍasphuṭaprati­saṃs­karaṇāya ye pūrvanagaradvāre karapratyāyā uttiṣṭhante te tasmin stūpe 'nupradattāḥ | yadā kṛkī rājā kālagatas tasya putraḥ sujāto nāmnā svarājye pratiṣṭhāpitaḥ | tasyāmātyaiḥ stokāḥ karapratyāyā upanāmitāḥ | rājā pṛcchati | kiṃ kāraṇam asmākaṃ bhavadbhiḥ stokāḥ karapratyāyā upanāmitāḥ | kim asmākaṃ vijite karapratyāyā uttiṣṭhante | te kathayanti | deva kutaḥ karapratyāyā uttiṣṭhante | ye deva pūrvadvāre karapratyāyās te vṛddharājñā stūpe khaṇḍasphuṭaprati­saṃs­karaṇāya prajñaptāḥ | yadi devo 'nujānīte vayaṃ tān karapratyāyān samucchindāmaḥ | sa kathayati | bhavanto yan mama pitrā kṛtaṃ tad eva brahmakṛtam | te saṃlakṣayanti | yadi devo 'nujānīte vayaṃ tathā kariṣyāmo yathā svayam eva te karapratyāyā notthāsyanti | taiḥ sa dvāro baddhvā sthāpitaḥ | na bhūyaḥ karapratyāyā uttiṣṭhante | tasmin stūpe ca sphuṭitakāni prādurbhūtāni | tau jāyāpatī vṛddhībhūtau tatraiva stūpe parikarma kurvāṇau tiṣṭhataḥ | uttarāpathāc ca sārthavāhaḥ paṇyam ādāya vārāṇasīm anuprāptaḥ | tenāsau dṛṣṭaḥ stūpaś caṭitasphuṭitakaiḥ prādurbhūtaiḥ | sa dṛṣṭvā pṛcchati | amba tāta kasyaiṣa stūpa iti | tau kathayataḥ | kāśyapasya samyaksaṃbuddhasya | kena kāritaḥ | kṛkiṇā rājñā | na tena rājñā asmin stūpe khaṇḍasphuṭaprati­saṃs­karaṇāya kiñcit prajñaptam | tau kathayataḥ | prajñaptaṃ ye pūrvanagaradvāre karapratyāyās te 'smin stūpe khaṇḍasphuṭaprati­saṃs­karaṇāya niryātitāḥ | kṛkī rājā kālagataḥ | tasya putraḥ sujāto nāmnā svarājye pratiṣṭhitaḥ | tena te karapratyāyāḥ samucchinnāḥ | tenāsmin stūpe caṭitasphuṭitakāni prādurbhūtāni | tasya ratnakarṇikā karṇe āmuktikā | tena sāvatārya tayor dattā | amba tātānayā ratnakarṇikayā asmin stūpe khaṇḍasphuṭaprati­saṃs­kāraṃ kurutam iti yāvad ahaṃ paṇyaṃ visarjayitvāgacchāmi | tataḥ paścād bhūyo 'pi dāsyāmi | tais tāṃ vikrīya tasmin stūpe khaṇḍasphuṭaprati­saṃs­kāraḥ kṛtaḥ | aparam utsarpitam | athāpareṇa samayena sa sārthavāhaḥ paṇyaṃ visarjayitvāgataḥ | tena sa dṛṣṭaḥ stūpe 'secanakadarśanaḥ | dṛṣṭvā sa ca bhūyasyāpi mātrayābhiprasannaḥ | sa prasādajātaḥ pṛcchati | amba tāta mā yuṣmābhiḥ kiñcid uddhārīkṛtam | tau kathayataḥ | putra nāsmābhiḥ kiñcid uddhārīkṛtaṃ kin tv aparam utsarpitaṃ tiṣṭhati | tena prasādajātena yat tatrāvaśiṣṭam aparaṃ ca datvā mahatīṃ pūjāṃ kṛtvā praṇidhānaṃ ca kṛtam | anenāhaṃ kuśalamūlenāḍhye mahādhane mahābhoge kule jāyeyam | evaṃvidhānāṃ ca dharmāṇāṃ lābhī syām | evaṃvidham eva śāstāram ārāgayeyaṃ mā virāgayeyam iti | kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavaḥ | yo 'sau sārthavāha eṣa evāsau śroṇaḥ koṭīkarṇaḥ | yad anena kāśyapasya samyaksaṃbuddhasya stūpe kārāṃ kṛtvā praṇidhānaṃ kṛtaṃ tasya karmaṇo vipākenāḍhye mahādhane mahābhoge kule jātaḥ | mama śāsane pravrajya sarvakleśaprahāṇād arhatvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam | aham anena kāśyapena samyaksaṃbuddhena samabalaḥ samajavaḥ samadhūraḥ samasāmānyaprāptaḥ śāstā ārāgito na virāgita iti hi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇām ekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ ekāntaśuklānāṃ karmaṇām ekāntaśuklo vipākaḥ vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ | tasmāt tarhi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇy apāsya vyatimiśrāṇi caikāntaśukleṣv eva karmasv ābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | ity evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam | bhikṣava ūcūḥ | kiṃ bhadantāyuṣmatā śroṇakoṭīkarṇena karma kṛtaṃ yasya karmaṇo vipākena dṛṣṭa eva dharme apāyā dṛṣṭāḥ | bhagavān āha | yad anena mātur antike kharavāk karma niścāritaṃ tasya karmaṇo vipākena dṛṣṭa eva dharma apāyā dṛṣṭāḥ |

buddho bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati jetavane 'nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme | āyuṣmān upanandaḥ saṃghanavakaḥ | tasya paṃktyā kaṭakaṭāyamaṃcakaḥ prāptaḥ | sa bhayena parivartate | mā bhetsyatīti saṃlakṣayati | aham upanando maṃcakasyāpi spṛhayāmi | nopananda iti nāmadheyaṃ dhārayāmi yadi śayyāṃ maṃcakaṃ vā nopāvartayāmi | sa kālyam evotthāya rājñaḥ prasenajitaḥ kosalasya sakāśam upasaṃkrāntaḥ | sa tenoktaḥ | svāgataṃ bhadantopanandasya | kaścid bhadantopanandaḥ sukhaṃ śayitaḥ | sa kathayati | gillapeṭha kiṃ tvaṃ na jānīṣe yathāham aṣṭapuṭīṃ śayyāṃ kalpayāmy upanando 'pi tathaiveti | ahaṃ saṃghanavako mama paṃktyā kaṭakaṭāyamaṃcakaḥ prāptaḥ | so 'haṃ bhayena parivartāmi | mā bhetsyatīti kalpate | bhadantopanandasyedṛśī aṣṭapuṭī śayyā sādhu kalpate suṣṭhu kalpate | kutra pratikṣiptaṃ kena vā pratikṣiptam | yadi te kalpate gṛhīto bhavatu | upanandaḥ kathayati | kiṃ mama kosalo janapado vartate | vihāraṃ nāmayitvānuprayaccha | tena tasyāṣṭau manuṣyā anupradattāḥ | tatra caturbhiḥ śayanāsanaṃ gṛhītaṃ caturbhiḥ khaṭṭā | te gṛhītvā vīthyā madhyena saṃprasthitāḥ | te brāhmaṇagṛhapatibhir dṛṣṭāḥ | dṛṣṭvā ca pṛcchanti | kutra bhavanto 'sya devaśayyāṃ kalpayiṣyanti | upanandaḥ kathayati | svagṛhe | kasyaiṣā śayyā nīyate | upanandaḥ kathayati | mayaiṣā labdhā | te 'vadhyāyanti kṣipanti vivācayanti | kiṃ bhadantopanandasya śrāmaṇakasya kāmaguṇā bādhante | tena vihāraṃ gatvā vihāraṃ siktaṃ saṃmṛṣṭaṃ sukumārī gomayakārṣy anupradattā | śayyāṃ prajñapya niṣetsyāmīti | bhagavān ca taṃ pradeśam anuprāptaḥ | saudvilyajāto bhagavantam idam avocat | paśya mama bhadanta kīdṛśī śayyā | tatra bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayate sma | ādita eva bhikṣavaḥ upanando mohapuruṣaḥ pratigopako veditavyaḥ | bhagavān saṃlakṣayati | yaḥ kaścid ādīnavo bhikṣavo uccaśayanamahāśayane śayyā kalpayanti | tasmān na bhikṣu­ṇoccaśayana­mahā­śayane niṣettavyam | niṣīdati sātisāro bhavati |

śravastyāṃ nidānam | bhikṣūṇāṃ navena tṛṇena pādāḥ śūlitāḥ | brāhmaṇagṛhapatayaḥ kathayanti | kena yuṣmākaṃ pādāḥ śūlitāḥ | navena tṛṇena | yūyaṃ nālāmbujaṃ kiṃ na dhārayata | nānujñātaṃ bhagavatā | etat prakaraṇaṃ bhikṣavo bhagavata ārocayanti | bhagavān āha | nālāmbujā dhāra­yitavyāḥ | evaṃ vṛddhe tṛṇe muṇḍapūlā dhārayitavyāḥ | pūlā haimavateṣu ca iti |

yadā virūḍhakena mohapuruṣeṇa kāpilavāstavaḥ śākyāḥ praghātitāḥ tatra kecid uttarāpathaṃ gatāḥ kecid yāvan naivālaṃ praviṣṭāḥ | śrāvastīyā vaṇijo naivālaṃ gatāḥ | tair vaṇijaḥ pṛṣṭāḥ | āryānando jñātivatsalo nāsmākam avalokayatīti | yāvat tais tasyārocitam | sa naivālaṃ praviṣṭaḥ | tasya himena pādau sphuṭitau | sa bhikṣubhir ucyate | tava pādau kimartham idānīm īdṛśau | himena | te tava jñātayaḥ kiṃ kurvanti | pūlāṃ dhārayanti | tvaṃ kimarthaṃ na dhārayasi | bhagavatā nānujñātam | etat prakaraṇaṃ bhikṣavo bhagavata ārocayanti | bhagavān āha | haimavateṣu janapadeṣu pūlā dhārayitavyāḥ |

āyuṣmān upālī buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ pṛcchati | yad uktaṃ bhadanta bhagavatā haimavateṣu janapadeṣu pūlā dhārayitavyā iti | katame haimavatā janapadāḥ | yatrodakasthālakaṃ śyāyati |

bhikṣor lubdhako 'bhiprasannaḥ | tasya ṛkṣacarma saṃpannam | sa bhikṣor anuprayacchati | sa na gṛhṇāti | bhagavāṃś ca taṃ pradeśam anuprāptaḥ | jānakā pṛcchakā buddhā bhagavantaḥ | pṛcchati buddho bhagavān āyuṣmantam ānandam | kim eṣa ānanda bhikṣor lubdhakaḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ samanubaddhaḥ | etat prakaraṇaṃ bhikṣavo bhagavata ārocayanti | bhagavān āha | durlabhā ānanda lubdhakasya śraddhā | yadi śatasahasram api labhati sarvaṃ praghātayati | tasmād yadi lubdhako rikṣacarmānuprayacchati grahītavyam | gṛhītvā gandhakuṭidvāre prajñapayitavyaṃ pādānte vā | sarvaṃ rikṣacarma cākṣuṣyaṃ svasti |

bhikṣor upānahāś chinnāḥ | sa carmakārasakāśaṃ gacchati | yāvad dīrghakālaṃ gatvā svabuddher vārayiṣyatīti | so 'nyatamena bhikṣuṇā dṛṣṭaḥ | yāvad asti mama kauśalaṃ yadi bhagavān anujānīyād granthayeyam | etat prakaraṇaṃ bhikṣavo bhagavata ārocayanti | bhagavān āha | yasya kauśalaṃ vidyate tena pratigupte pradeśe sthitvā granthayitavyam | sa kathayati | bhagavatānujñātaḥ | granthaye | tatrārayā śastrakeṇa baddhikayā ca prayojanam | etat prakaraṇaṃ bhikṣavo bhagavata ārocayanti | bhagavān āha | tasmād anujānāmi bhikṣuṇā ārā śastrakaṃ baddhikā ca dhārayitavyāḥ |
